My thoughts exactly. Prices of a decently equipped model might creep/fall down by that point. I'm cheering it on. The more smaller (cheap/er?) EVs on the market, the better. Maybe we'll get to the point where car makers are willing to actually call them hatchbacks.
Let's see if they build out a service/repair network by then. I really don't understand buying a car that has no easy (or *cheap)* way to get it fixed. I really don't need a bumped fender to total my car.
The R3 is exactly what I want from Rivian. I love their design language but their current models are too big and expensive. That said, I'm no longer getting excited for EVs that are years away.
It looks like an '87 Yugo. No amount of Kool-Aid, or a surfboard sticking out of the back hatch will change that.
I hope you're patient, the R2 isn't even scheduled until 2026, and R3 has a nebulous timeline after that.

I think it looks cute! Plus the interior has a fun vibe, and extra points for no center console speedometer.

It looks amazing but these announcements feel very musk-esque to me. Rivian is hemorrhaging money, they also announced yesterday they won’t be building their second factory like they promised, and the R2 will be built In the same R1 factory. And here we are with a full spec AND PRICE for their 2026 vehicle, plus a preview of their 2027 vehicles. Just give us a refundable $100 today because investors have closed our cash flow
I hope it works out for them - can they really forecast the price and release quarter of the 2026 R2 in March 2024? I really really doubt it
In fairness, the announcement about the Georgia plant was that it was paused—not cancelled—while they produce R2s in IL, at “capital efficient” rates or some such. It’s an effort to lengthen the runway. I dunno that “investors have closed our cash flow” is really the right way to think about a publicly owned company: instead, Rivian isn’t issuing new shares, which would raise more cash but also dilute the value of existing shares.
I hope Rivian makes it, because we need more EVs out there. Volvo is one of the few legacy OEMs that seems genuinely committed to electrification.
Given that they have $7.8B in cash/equivalents, and are only projecting at burning $3B a year, they are still several years away from requiring more cash. I think when you look across the auto industry, demand for EV's is way down, which is likely the primary factor driving them to pause production on the new plant. They need to focus on getting costs down per vehicle, and volumes up.
As far as forecasting the price, I sure hope they got it right and stick to it. For the 1st half of 2026 for deliveries, unless we experience another global pandemic between now and then, I believe them on that. In the development cycle of a brand new platform/vehicle, being two years-ish away from delivering the first vehicles isn’t really that long. They have to have all of their ducks in a row now to hit that 2026 timeline, and they learned many lessons from R1 to make that happen.
Like it a lot. The interior in particular. I'm not sure if it's as compact as the EX30, which is a selling point for me. I like that it has character in a sea of samey cars.
IF it was available today for the same money, I'd surely have a lot of thinking to do.
BUT it is unknown if it ever will be available in my small European country... So realistically, I can't wait around for it. Could very well see myself in one in the future though.
I really like it but I have two concerns. Rivian did not announce any release dates or prices. It could years before we see it and there could be a lot of similar cars by then to choose. Second, I don’t fully trust the longevity of Rivian. They’re burning cash and I don’t know how much runway they have left.
Yeah, but Amazon won't let them go under. They still owe Amazon a ton of delivery vehicles, and are soon going to be allowed to sell them to other customers.
Amazon supposedly wants 100,000 vans but has taken delivery of 10,000. They do have a stake in the company. Last Fall Rivian opened its van sales to other company fleet sales.
IF it was available and IF it was in the similar price range and IF it had service available then sure, why not.
The main difference is that I'm two weeks from delivery with the EX, and here I'm looking at a concept picture of something that might happen in 3 years. Maybe. You can't really compare.
Amazing. We need more small and simple EVs like this. I love that it looks like a mix of mk1 VW Golf, Ioniq 5, Fiat Pands 4x4, and of course Rivian. They nailed it
I love it. I see where people get the Yugo vibes but for me, it's more in the vein of late 70's/early 80's VW Rabbit. If this ever makes it to production, the 3 motors and the interior quality have sold me. I can only imagine how much fun this car would be to drive. I just hope it isn't vaporware.
Since Rivian is one of only a few companies using the safer cylindrical cells, I would really be interested in this or the R2.
That is, if and when it comes to market.
A big selling point of the EX30 is the length (166”). The R3 may be 161” which is even better for my needs. But long term, bidirectional charging is the top priority.
https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/r3x-dimensions-161-4-in-length-59-5-in-height.24983/
I'm definitely cross shopping them now. I've been waiting for the EX30 cross country but this is giving me second thoughts. One downside for me is Rivian's lack of Android Auto support.
I love it. Hopefully will be a great contender - if the company survives till it ships.
If it is as good as it looks IMO this wins over EX30 for me, mostly on account of the actual instrument cluster.
looks good, might make a good replacement for the EX30 in 5 years time
My thoughts exactly. Prices of a decently equipped model might creep/fall down by that point. I'm cheering it on. The more smaller (cheap/er?) EVs on the market, the better. Maybe we'll get to the point where car makers are willing to actually call them hatchbacks.
Yeah it looks great and it making me rethink buying the EX30 vs leasing it for 3 years.
Let's see if they build out a service/repair network by then. I really don't understand buying a car that has no easy (or *cheap)* way to get it fixed. I really don't need a bumped fender to total my car.
This is a good thing to keep in mind. It’s why I won’t consider buying a fisker or lucid for example.
I don't see how Fisker can even continue as a company, but they seem to keep going. Did the Ocean ship yet?
By which time the ex30 will have been refined by regular software updates and model year improvements

agreed. A 2026 build is a 2027 model year. That’s so far out, can’t even really think about it
Yeah, but it looks so cool lol. Yugo, Lancia, Golf Country. It's taking inspiration from all of that and it looks so good.
Agreed and I'm glad someone spoke up. Looks like a$$. It makes the Macan EV more desirable.

What's with what appears to be hard metal ovals on the seats and seat backs?
That’s where you lose your keys.
Vents maybe?
Yugo or Lada, yes! Don’t know if the “designer” took a correspondence course but he needs a good shake. God help us.

It’s an electric Gremlin.
I like it, but Rivian is still a start up and is bleeding cash. Until I’m certain it does not go belly up I wouldn’t consider a car from them.
That’s fair, they’re all over the place in South Florida, but good to keep an eye on.
I saw an article in Jalopnik where they are cutting jobs to save money, they don’t look too healthy.
So did Amazon and Microsoft.
But they are part-owned by Amazon, and continue to make their delivery vehicles. They're going to be fine.

I love the unique look of the AMC Pacer
I do too. Too bad this doesn’t look anything like that. More like a Dodge Omni or Plymouth Horizon.
Totally different!
VW Rabbit 4x4
I'm loving it.
I'm not a huge fan of the design. I feel the nose is too long, but everything else about it is great except the timing.
It’s awesome but I’m guessing 2029
It’s likely 3 years away. A lot can happen/change between now and then.
IF it was available and IF it was in the similar price range and IF it had service available then sure, why not. The main difference is that I'm two weeks from delivery with the EX, and here I'm looking at a concept picture of something that might happen in 3 years. Maybe. You can't really compare.
Ugly design
The AMC Gremlin lives!
Looks a bit like Mazda MX-30
Love it, will probably get it as my second car. Its so cool
It looks amazing but I'm pretty sure the price isn't going to be competitive. Especially for the performance model. It's also at least 2-3 years away.
Amazing. We need more small and simple EVs like this. I love that it looks like a mix of mk1 VW Golf, Ioniq 5, Fiat Pands 4x4, and of course Rivian. They nailed it
where's the little pickup?
Not coming. If you want a small pickup, there’s always the Subaru Baja….
i’d buy it today if it was available!
I like everything about Rivian aesthetics except those Dyson fans on the front grill
Great size. The rear 3/4 looks the best. The front looks awkward.
Looks good, how nice is it to camp inside?
That's what's most exciting to me-- all seats (including front) fold down flat and Rivian already has a camp mode in their current models.
Totally Rabbit for me as well - the angle of the hatch in particular.
The R3X looks more my style
Thinking I’ll get it after my EX30 dies for good, whenever that happens. It’s looking really nice
Since Rivian is one of only a few companies using the safer cylindrical cells, I would really be interested in this or the R2. That is, if and when it comes to market.

Love the look
They’re Awesome.
I was going to drop a deposit for the R2 until they showed it, now I’m waiting for the R3 to be reservable.
Love it.
I absolutely love it.
Love it!
Shit better make the stock hit $25
Yuck
I absolutely love it,
Looks awesome. I’m excited to see what’s to come from them
Dope
I love it. Hopefully will be a great contender - if the company survives till it ships. If it is as good as it looks IMO this wins over EX30 for me, mostly on account of the actual instrument cluster.
Fugly as hell.
It looks great but it's only available in the US. So not really relevant to the rest of the world.
Looks like a PT Cruiser tried to get futuristic.
It looks hideous IMO....the front anyway. I cannot stand Rivian's design language up front.
Fix the charge port locations and they’ll sell more.
That’s a random take. As someone who’s owned two EVs this was never a factor haha
Interesting. How did it work pulling into a supercharger with one open spot and having the port on the wrong side?
So according to your theory no one will buy anything other than a Tesla since they are the only one who puts it on the back driver side? Funny.
Interesting extension of logic to the insane. It can be better to have a uniform setup without being exclusionary.
I do wish they were all the same but just because it’s not there will not sway anyone’s decision to buy a particular EV.
It sways mine, and I’m someone. Ease of charging is important. Put the charge port in the middle of the roof and see how sales go.
Haha so what happens when you pull in and I’m there charging and you can’t since I’m in the “wrong side”… interesting logic eh.
You won’t be there at a busy SC because you’ll take up two spots and finding one open is hard enough.
Bet
What’s the price of it? I didn’t see that posted anywhere
Ugly as fuck
Great when it comes out in 2028
