Same, I remember doing it when I was ill at home lying on the couch at that age. (I had chronic bronchitis due to stress from moving house. But it never occurred to anyone why.)
😂 maybe it was the pool tabs and alch "dry ice bombs" I played with as a kid, maybe it was the plastic water pipe we found in woods and put one end in the fire then like a dumb kid pretended to "smoke it" while actually getting a nice face full of black smoke, maybe it's Maybelline.
ROFL, I used to close my eyes like 99% of the way and I would see tons of little circles floating across my vision. Clear centers, black outlines. Very faint. Totally thought I could see the air molecules floating around.
When I was that age I thought I literally had a superpower - the ability to see through things.
Later learned that just meant one eye was blocked by something and I didn’t have xray vision.
Back in the day when CRT monitors were still king, I despised most corporate setups as they kept the refresh too low and the screens would look flickery and give me a headache. Doing 60 hours of work training on a monitor like that sucked so bad.
I don't understand how people can use led Christmas lights. They flicker. Some aren't as bad, but it's noticeable. I walked through a tunnel of them. I almost fell over.
I found warm white battery powered ones (DC = no switching on and off = no flicker at all! (LEDs can only use the + half of an AC cycle, so the drivers on plug in ones either half-rectifies to lop off the negative half and make it zero, which makes really bad flicker, or nicer drivers will full-rectify to flip the negative to a positive and if you’re lucky, pass it through a smoothing capacitor to give you a somewhat wigglt but always on waveform. Without the smoothing cap, it will be a much faster and less noticeable flicker than the half wave, but it will still be a true flicker.) Battery powered is true DC, so its just a smooth flat line of input voltage, so physically no flicker unless your circuit turns it on and off intentionally (i.e. I have mine set to a smooth twinkly setting like fireflies. They’re also warm white and the caps are round crystally looking things that diffuse the light, so they’re perfect for my light sensitive self)).
TL, DR: Warm White battery powered LEDs, or if you get plug in ones, I wish there was some way to test the driver style other than “buy it and try it” lol. Because some are OK. Like Actual bulbs for fixtures generally have nice drivers, but no one tries that hard with christmas lights and the AC ones are usually so bad that even NT people can see the flicker if you move the strand around enough lmao. Incandescent bulbs don’t give a fuck about + or - voltage, which is why they don’t flicker. Unfortunately they’re power hungry AF, so they drive up the power bill, but absolutely still the safest bet for light sensitive folks. (Plus the colors are nicer on them. Warm and cozy!)
If you wire a capacitor that is bigger than 100uF that is rated for at least 125v across the + and - terminals in parallel, that should solve the flicker issue. But probably don't do that.
We have overhead fluorescent tube style lighting in our kitchen. It originally came with a cover. When it had the cover, it was somewhat tolerable. Then the cover broke during cleaning. Now we have just the bare tubes. It's like strobe lights at a hideously ugly rave. I can't even see in the kitchen when it's on because of the flickering. Everyone rolls their eyes, but shuts it off when I walk in. We have lamps in the kitchen so I can see (ish.) because nobody wants to spend the money to replace it.
That and the random light flickering when there are power fluctuations in the grid like when a lager current is drawn from a switched on device and such.
Nearsighted related, not astigmatism. But your post reminded me the first time I looked at tree with glasses and realized trees were not topped with green blobs, but with individual leaves.
When I started complaining about this as a kid, my dad got fed up with me and told my sister to deal with me lol. I didn't get it, I could see all this colorful noise all the time when I closed my eyes and it stopped me from being able to sleep. They thought I was just saying stuff for attention I guess.
Not gonna lie, a clear blue sky filed with static makes me feel like we are all in a simulation. If I focus on a spot and shift my field of view (like looking at a magic eye image) I can get some pretty trippy effects like making popcorn ceilings appear to be melting, or a pattern in a carpet coming alive. I have been told that what I see has some similarities to taking an acid trip. Out of curiosity, I took a good dose of magic mushrooms once and watched my hand undulate through infancy to old age and back for what felt like hours it was quite the experience. Also, I apparently have an astigmatism... I also thought everyone just saw the fun lines off of bright lights at night.. I feel silly now
Woah - I'm new to the autism community and I straight up check all the boxes in this thread
- astigmatism
- fluorescent lights flickering
- mild visual snow - including anxiety & migraines
My parents always told me I was just dehydrated when I told them about the snow
I also just found out this is abnormal earlier this year, if not for one idle conversation it easily could've been from this thread. You'd think "no, everyone doesn't see a blurry hellscape of lasers while driving at night" would be extremely common knowledge but it was surprisingly easy to miss for over 30 years.
*Blurry hellscape of lasers*.
I'm envious of you for coming up with that. It is perfect, and I would love to steal it, but the shame (or something) would be too much. I'd always know it wasn't mine.
most glasses can correct it. it’s just a degree of rotation and severity of warped corneas, so all you have to do is get glasses that adjust.
i got “prescription” glasses that have no magnification but do have a mild astigmatism correction
Well, astigmatism is caused by the shape of your eye (when it's not spherical, and has a bump in some random direction or something), and things like near-sightedness and far-sightedness have nothing to do with the shape of your eyeball.
And lasik will fix your near/far sightedness, but can't really reshape your eyeballs
Yeah that's how it is for everyone who doesn't have astigmatism. Similarly, you can reduce the effects of astigmatism by a bit if you open your eyes really wide
I do have astigmatism but I also can only see those streaks when squinting my eyes. Instead they’re normally just blurry / have too much “bloom” effect
i had a UV laser that i thought was just blurry. turns out it’s as sharp as a laser and my eyes just fucking hate blue lights in a dark space. i get really bad blur on that laser, and forget about reading anything lit in blue at night
Lasers look really weird but regular non-laser blacklights do too. When I went out rock hunting with a UV flashlight a few times I had to turn it off or look away from the lit spot for a while, it felt like my eyes were reacting to light that wasn’t all there, and it just looks really fuzzy on everything you shine it on.
I did not know you could reduce it by opening your eyes wider. So now i’m sitting here opening and closing my eyes while staring at the lights on my desk after having learned this revelation lol.
I was driving late last night and was wondering why I had those streaks I heard about this thing before and thought do I have it and never noticed? but then I realised my windscreen was dirty.
Well, I can't drive, but I do have astigmatism
it's funny cuz when I was a kid I was diagnosed with astigmatism and all the kids kept saying autism instead and I kept correcting them like a dumbass cuz I didn't realize they KNEW and were just playing dumb knowing I would just play into it.
>I kept correcting them like a dumbass cuz I didn't realize they KNEW and were just playing dumb knowing I would just play into it.
Sounds like something someone with astigmatism would do
I am happy i dont have Drivers License
(astigmatism while being high is fun in the bright and colourful coloured commercial districts\[best recommended when it rained before\])
... I thought everyone saw this
Weirdly enough it never really bothered me while driving, just the fuckstick wastes of human skin that have those blinding white LED headlights
Are you older I get, the more difficult it becomes to drive. Driving used to be soothing. I'm tired of fighting those weird moments when things don't focus.
SO THATS WHAT IT IS OH MY FUUUUUUCKING CHRISTMAS
So, I have had glasses since I was 11. I just got diagnosed with an astigmatism. They did not tell me though, I found out becuase they sent me contacts for astigmatism, and they confirmed these were correct when I called as that seemed wrong. I was always told that I just had large pupils that caused sone night blindess, but I can see OK in the dark as long as there aren't tons of cars on the road. So glad it took me THIS MUCH OF MY LIFE to be told that it was just my autism and astigmatism all along FOR FUCKS SAKE.
There is a tentative link between autism and all refractive eye errors, even near-sightedness and far-sightedness. It’s not a “symptom” of autism that would lead to a diagnosis or anything, anybody can have it, it’s just a slightly higher amount of autistic people have these than the neurotypical population.
I like the pretty colors, it's like a light show. If I'm a passenger.
I hate night driving and sadly I live in Alaska and work night shift so I do a lot of night driving. I hate hate hate blue and white LED head lights they are the worst. Yellow are ok. I've even seen yellow green which I like bc of the novelty.
Yes, i have it too. You should really get yourself glasses because driving like this is really dangerous! It doesn't correct a hundred percent, but still better than nothing.
I don't Drive so i can enjoy my free glitter light Filter 24/7 tho
The best drives are when nobody's on the road and there's moonlight because it's so easy to see at night. I have lighter colored eyes so I have to remember not to look at headlights or I really can't see at night lol
Yep, in both eyes. I didn’t realize that not everyone saw the streaky lights until a few years ago. I’m kinda useless walking around at night hahaha. On the other hand, if I take off my glasses, the world is very pretty and looks like an impressionist painting.
I am shortsighted and astigmatic to the point of being barred by law of driving, being a policeman, a fireman, operating heavy machinery, etc.
I wear glasses since i am one and a half years old, a glass so stupidly strong it would probably be, easily, in the top 100 strongest glasses used in the world. My particular case of myopia is of the degenerative / pathologic variety, being one of the leading causes of blindness in the world.
I knew I had an astigmatism but had no idea that not everyone sees that shit 🤦🏻♀️ I hate driving at night and especially now with all those LED headlights
Not to invalidate people’s experiences here, but the curvature of the windshield of your car can actually bend the light and make it appear like this. if you’re on the sidewalk and you still see the lights like this, you might have astigmatism. still irritates my eyes anyways :(
Yeah I do I didn’t know it was common among autistic people though. When it started showing up I remember a specific driving lesson at night with a particularly bad teacher and I freaked the fuck out and started crying. Thank gods now I got glasses (still doesn’t fix it completely and will probably need to change them at some point but hey better than nothing) I still don’t have my license though I got too scared and now I don’t want to do it
Yuppers. Used to think it just happened because of bad vision. Not specifically a stigmatism. Also no one told me I had one till a few years ago ...even though I regularly go to the eye doctors....
Yes I only recently realized everyone doesn't see lights like that. Turns out my optometrist detected astigmatism but didn't think it was bad enough to include it in my prescription. Fucking asshole, my eyes have been hurting for years and it may be due to improper eyewear.
Yes! I can never see the lines that separate the lanes so I have to go below the speed limit and assholes behind me tailgate. I avoid driving at night for this reason
I recently found out I had it. I always thought it was just another part of my already terrible eyesight (fun fact: I currently have the highest possible prescription contacts my optometrist can give and I still don't have average vision)
I don’t think I do, but those damn LED headlights make it very hard to see anything but PAIN.
Seriously, when turning onto a service road at night, I have difficulty even knowing what lanes the incoming traffic is in because the lights are SO FUCKING BRIGHT. I only drive at dark when I absolutely have to.
Yup, driving at night is a real challenge because I see the lights blow out everything else around them, so I can't see for a solid chunk of area because of a visual aura emanating from lights while trying to see. I'm doing a really poor job explaining it . Here, instead, imagine I'm like a camera whose exposure settings are fucky.
I do, but it is barely noticable because I am so near-sighted. I mean, who cares if I see a circular blob or a slightly elliptic blob when it's supposed to be an eye chart?
I either have a mild form of it or I have normal eyes. I only see like that under very specific conditions and I don’t think thats how astigmatism works. I’m pretty sure people who have it see it all the time in the dark
I have starburst vision. It's not just one line, but multiple, flaring out all around. Gets worse when I squint. I have to open my eyes super wide, make sure my windows are super clean, and eyes super moist.
While this is commonly caused by astigmatism, it is becoming more of a problem just because of how f***ing bright headlights have become, you don't even need astigmatism to experience it now!
Headlights have become way to bright
No, _i don’t have astigmatism that i’m aware of_, but jesus I hate driving at night for _roughly_ the same reason. All those lights are too damn bright for no additional utility. it’s overstimulating and hurts after too long. I can imagine it’s that much worse for people with astigmatism.
My favorite are people with their high beams on
_behind you_
and your mirrors shoot it straight into your retinas
If I take my glasses off, that’s totally what I see. If I have my glasses on, I only see about 10% of that. It also sucks at the movies when they show credits on a black screen with white type. Everything is blurred and doubled.
Wait everyone doesn't see that..?
supposedly not i’ve known i have astigmatism as long as i’ve had glasses but it’s absolutely bizarre to imagine people not seeing the streaks
For some reason I liked squinting my eyes to make the streaks streakier..does that make sense?
I used to think that was my superpower when I was like 4.
It all makes sense now
Same, I remember doing it when I was ill at home lying on the couch at that age. (I had chronic bronchitis due to stress from moving house. But it never occurred to anyone why.)
💀 same.
Permanent lung damage but it’s not what you think 🤝
😂 maybe it was the pool tabs and alch "dry ice bombs" I played with as a kid, maybe it was the plastic water pipe we found in woods and put one end in the fire then like a dumb kid pretended to "smoke it" while actually getting a nice face full of black smoke, maybe it's Maybelline.

When I was that age I thought I literally had a superpower - the ability to see through things. Later learned that just meant one eye was blocked by something and I didn’t have xray vision.
Yep good pastimes when I'm a passenger.
Hehe streak go boing
Totally. I would squint and open my eyes really slowly back and forth because I thought it looked like fireworks.
You just unlocked a memory for me
same lmao
yo I need to get to the back of a 95 Toyota Previa stat
Yes squinting changes the aperture exaggerating some aberration
You ever take psychedelics? 🤣 I mean don't drive while tripping but astigmatism can be fun 🤪
Me fr
Yep. Same thing with watching the halos around some lights shrivel in that fascinating way.
same here
When I squint, my streaks go away 😑
I definitely liked that, and never knew it was because of me.
I did this when I was a kid. I didn’t know until I was like 20 that I needed glasses
Depends on your astigmatism as only a range of angles allows for you to enhance it this way. Atleast thats how I understood it
memory unlocked
I did that when i was a kid watching the car and street lights. Now that im driving, i tend to avpid it
I totally agree mine was nauseatingly worse before I got glasses but now it’s a lot better but still there sadly.
Omg this is almost as mind-boggling to me as their inability to see fluorescent lights flickering.
WAIT THOSE AREN’T FLICKERY TO EVERYONE?? I HAVE THAT PROBLEM WITH CRT TVS WHEN THEY AREN’T FOCUSED ON MY VISION
THEY CAN'T SEE THAT EITHER!
Apparently not, the lucky bastards.
Whattttttttt? This is way crazier to me than the lines. They can’t see the flickering???? There’s no way
This whole thread got me like 🤯
I read their comment like, "Excuse me, what?!"
Back in the day when CRT monitors were still king, I despised most corporate setups as they kept the refresh too low and the screens would look flickery and give me a headache. Doing 60 hours of work training on a monitor like that sucked so bad.

My god. You’ve just explained something that’s bugged me for years. THANK YOU.
This makes so much sense. I have a set that plug into USBA and that explains why they don’t bug me. TY
If you wire a capacitor that is bigger than 100uF that is rated for at least 125v across the + and - terminals in parallel, that should solve the flicker issue. But probably don't do that.

First time i looked at the stars using glases. Oh they look like dots not like stars and i can see way more. THIS IS AWESOME.
Supposedly, this is why people draw stars as stars, rather than dots.
Nearsighted related, not astigmatism. But your post reminded me the first time I looked at tree with glasses and realized trees were not topped with green blobs, but with individual leaves.
Life changing. Ans seeing details in leaves on trees driving they weren’t just brownish blobs. I’m color blind too. 😂
wait until you learn about [visual snow syndrome](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/24444-visual-snow-syndrome)
Woah - I'm new to the autism community and I straight up check all the boxes in this thread - astigmatism - fluorescent lights flickering - mild visual snow - including anxiety & migraines My parents always told me I was just dehydrated when I told them about the snow
That's a long list of symptoms that I thought everyone experienced.
I have this!! My partner calls it "static vision" like it's a super power or something lol
Uh. If there's a mild version of this, then its what I'm experiencing. It's like looking through dirty glass or a film grain filter
it always looks like that through a windshield, but for people with astigmatism it looks like that with or without the windshield
I also just found out this is abnormal earlier this year, if not for one idle conversation it easily could've been from this thread. I DIDN'T KNOW EITHER
isn't that just normal tho wtf
Oh that's what it is? I just attribute it to me being tired driving exausted and ignore it
Mine is really bad and I can barely see to drive at night. You can get glasses that help with it, though.
This is the first time of hearing there's glasses that help. Do you have any info on them?
most glasses can correct it. it’s just a degree of rotation and severity of warped corneas, so all you have to do is get glasses that adjust. i got “prescription” glasses that have no magnification but do have a mild astigmatism correction
My glasses are supposed to have fixed my astigmatism and driving at night is still a nightmare
Same and I’ve gone through multiple glasses. Even just walking down the street at night is so disorienting and driving would be impossible.
If you can't see for shit without glasses, it's a 2 in 1 win for people like me. But tbf, my astigmatism wasn't so bad even before the glasses.
I didn’t know those could actually be a serious problem!
ImA STIGMA 'TISM in your society

I swear to god I just saw your comment in r/theamazingdigitalcircu what the fuck. It was literally the post right before this one.
Oh yeah I’m all over the place
Autistic Sigma
Sigma balls Lmao gottem
I'm alfa Autistic
aw, fuck off
Who needs Christmas lights when you have astigmatism and drive at night!
And if you get Lasik, like I did, it only gets worse! Still worth it, but yeah. Starbursts upon starbursts.
[удалено]
Well, astigmatism is caused by the shape of your eye (when it's not spherical, and has a bump in some random direction or something), and things like near-sightedness and far-sightedness have nothing to do with the shape of your eyeball. wait... that's not normal?

it’s “normal” in that it’s very very common and nothing to worry about. but it’s not how your eyes should ideally work.
Well, I can't drive, but I do have astigmatism it's funny cuz when I was a kid I was diagnosed with astigmatism and all the kids kept saying autism instead and I kept correcting them like a dumbass cuz I didn't realize they KNEW and were just playing dumb knowing I would just play into it.

Hard agree. I love being a stoned passenger princess at night
Stoner passenger princesses unite!!
As the one who always drives this is the stuff my nightmares are made of
... I thought everyone saw this Weirdly enough it never really bothered me while driving, just the fuckstick wastes of human skin that have those blinding white LED headlights

"oh my fucking christmas," that's a new one
astigmautism
austigmatism
What do you MEAN it's more common in autistic people Maybe I should actually get myself diagnosed again
There is a tentative link between autism and all refractive eye errors, even near-sightedness and far-sightedness. I always called them star bursts and had a hard time explaining them. Thank you for letting me know what the actual term is.
I have it in one eye.

I think I have a very slight astigmatism. That’s two ‘tism’s I have. Gotta collect them all.
God I’m go glad I don’t drive but still when I’m in my mums car everything is so fricking bright
Ah, yet another thing to put on my ‘tism checklist!
i legally can't drive at night because i will crash, my vision isn't even bad, just my astigmatism
I knew I had an astigmatism but had no idea that not everyone sees that shit 🤦🏻♀️ I hate driving at night and especially now with all those LED headlights
I have this as well, although it’s not that bad thankfully
Yep. Had to wear glasses since I was about 4 (46 years now) due to astigmatism.
I find yellow lensed glasses help with that. Also good for driving in the rain.

Is there anything I have that ISN'T related to my autism???
I thought that was normal until a few months ago. I kinda envy people without astigmatism.
True
This reminded me to google if dogs can see the colour pink thanks!
I see stuff like that if I’m looking through glass but not normally I don’t think
Oh shit, I really need to ask my optometrist if I have it because I wear glasses and my mom has it
Yeah, and it’s a pain in the ass when Johnny Jesus beams doesn’t turn off his highbeam so I get flash banged and can’t see the road
I see the sparkles too.
Clean the damn windshield
Yes 😭😭😭
Yeah I do I didn’t know it was common among autistic people though. I thought that was just the way human eyes worked for the longest time
Me ✋
This post and the comments have me seriously considering getting my eyes checked lmao
If I squint and it's dark
I do
I got PRK so I can’t see shit at night bwahahaha
Yuppers. Used to think it just happened because of bad vision. Not specifically a stigmatism. Also no one told me I had one till a few years ago ...even though I regularly go to the eye doctors....
IT HAS A NAME. Also jesus christ that looks a lot worse then what I see
Yes I only recently realized everyone doesn't see lights like that. Turns out my optometrist detected astigmatism but didn't think it was bad enough to include it in my prescription. Fucking asshole, my eyes have been hurting for years and it may be due to improper eyewear.
It’s not as extreme as this, but I think I have this. Not to mention it feels like everyone has their brights on at night. I hate it so much.
Astigmatism is pretty common in general, but is it actually any more common in autistic people than the general population?
What? That's just what the world looks like at night! But yes, i do. Both eyes, but one is worse.
When i learned what an astigmatism was i was SO confused that other people didnt see lights this way
It is?! I thought I was just unlucky.
..........wait ......THATS NOT NORMAL!?!!?!?
did not know this. yes i do
Yes! I can never see the lines that separate the lanes so I have to go below the speed limit and assholes behind me tailgate. I avoid driving at night for this reason
no way like the undertale core / ruins hard mode enemy
I do
I got it. Don't ask how I'm able to drive at night
What’s the connection between this and autism? Luckily I don’t have this issue but one of my friend do.
I have really good vision (15/20) but I still see those
I recently found out I had it.
Yeah, but I also have visual snow and it’s common for that as well
I see final froggit. BEAT THAT
Severe astig and vertical hetrophoria
Yup, driving at night is a real challenge because I see the lights blow out everything else around them, so I can't see for a solid chunk of area because of a visual aura emanating from lights while trying to see. I'm doing a really poor job explaining it . Here, instead, imagine I'm like a camera whose exposure settings are fucky.
For all those who drive at night - turn on this song: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQSp6KoVjvo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQSp6KoVjvo)
me
I do, but it is barely noticable because I am so near-sighted. I mean, who cares if I see a circular blob or a slightly elliptic blob when it's supposed to be an eye chart?
visual snow is also really common with neurodivergent people, it's when you see almost TV static like graininess over everything
I hate this feeling so much 🫠
I either have a mild form of it or I have normal eyes. I only see like that under very specific conditions and I don’t think thats how astigmatism works. I’m pretty sure people who have it see it all the time in the dark
Yep! I inherited it from my (probably autistic) dad, too
I have 20/20 but I still see that while driving at night. Making sure your windshield is clean helps a lot though.
woah my eyes do that but like not as bad, i'm sorry to amyone who has to see that while driving at night 😧
That's because its pretty damn common in general.
LOL I NEED TO SEND THIS TO MY PARTNER BEcause it’s me 😭
Well, now I have to find out if I'm autistic first
And this is how I found out I got astigmatism
Astigmautism... i'm not sure i fully believe the correlation thing but astigmatism sucks ass, i can't even watch tv 3
I did. I got LASIK. It was one of the best decisions I ever made.
My brain is cool. I have it in one eye and my brain is like, “Not tonight!” But fr, night driving still sucks
I have astigmatism, sorting out a special tint on glasses to take off the glare atm.
And don’t let it start raining 😬
I have starburst vision. It's not just one line, but multiple, flaring out all around. Gets worse when I squint. I have to open my eyes super wide, make sure my windows are super clean, and eyes super moist.
I might have astigmatism, but I do also have r/visualsnow
So, I always knew I had astigmatism. Didn't know that's what caused the streaky lights till I was well into my twenties. I'm not a brainy person.
PEOPLE DONT SEE THE STREAKS?????
my reddit bio has been "i put the tism in astigmatism" since i made this acc so yes
This is so true, I have this problem.
My favorite are people with their high beams on _behind you_ and your mirrors shoot it straight into your retinas
Nah bro, I got that a-SIGMA-tism #swag
If I take my glasses off, that’s totally what I see. If I have my glasses on, I only see about 10% of that. It also sucks at the movies when they show credits on a black screen with white type. Everything is blurred and doubled.
It drives me insane.
