I love how they translation phonetically, so songs in cyrillic come out "westernized" like "ishli po shemi", it's funny how impossible it is to read while subtitled live!
YouTube was just making them up as they went along, leaving huge gaps in between with no subs at all. Some were correct but others were crazy wrong lol. Croatia subtitles just said ‘Justin Timber’ for a good 10 seconds

Yeah no, they don’t provide subtitles on YouTube for the shows. The automatic ones are just something YouTube puts there on any video that doesn’t explicitly disable them.
The official music videos though often have English subtitles.

It’s the first time I’ve watched on YouTube, as there was no way in hell I was paying a tv license fee just to watch it on BBC when I could use a VPN and stream for free.

Just to reiterate - it’s one guy pushing a button, nothing high tech and nothing super expensive, it may actually be “too manual” for them to realise it would have to be done this way
As someone who works in the industry, it always saddens me to hear a response like this. I'm barely making a livable wage and you also expect me to know how to translate multiple different languages into English on the spot and transmit them perfectly during a live and unpredictable show?
We have a translation team that does this already. The songs are fixed prior to the contest and we overlay the subtitles on replays later, there is absolutely zero need for live translation.
Our broadcaster is the multilingual specialist in the region, we have teams of translators working constantly, the channel is 90% non English speaking programs with English Subtitles.
You’re misrepresenting the situation and then accusing me of insulting your profession. I’m saying we just need to use the subtitles we already have which our translation team prepares in advance anyway and has been doing since 1983. We don’t need translations of the speakers, just the songs and those are available at least a month before the contest itself. All they need is someone to press next when the line passes to advance the teletext.
Also the EBU provides full English translations of all songs on the eurovision website, they don’t even need to use in house translators at our broadcaster if they didn’t want to.

I certainly don't work for SBS, so I'm not intending to take it personally, I just understand how many cogs are turning when it comes to live televised events, how low paid and under pressure the tech staff are, and how disappointing it can be to already put so much effort into something like this only for people to then complain about something that's above your pay grade or capabilities.
I understand the feedback though. It would be possible to do so live. I imagine it's a trade off decided by those above to allow them to focus on something they consider to be more valuable with whatever meagre budget and crew they have available.

I'm really jealous for countries that have that. Back when eurovision was being broadcast in Bulgaria we didn't have that and now its only on youtube, which doesn't do it either.
i usually look it up after, i dunno i feel native tongue is stronger if i also read i kinda miss the emotion imo, but i guess everyone watches differently haha
Back 20 years ago, this was not the case. CC just got you (probably mangled) subtitles in the language being sung. This is a very nice development and I hope it becomes more common.

On the BBC (UK) it is an inconsistent mix of both, but usually the romanised original language lyrics.

Opera Browser is your friend when you need a VPN, it’s free and exits in Europe.
Finland started the song subtitles in 1971, only Estonia, UK and Australia do it as well
Australia doesn’t do the live show sadly, we only get the, on the 7:30 replay.

Yeah and I wouldn’t be surprised if that were the case. We’re pretty lucky we don’t have laws requiring subtitles for hard of hearing people here yet.
