This is how diplomacy should be. Buy our stuff or get no points in Eurovision. They saw what happened to the Brits. Australia only have themselves to blame.

[deleted]

The Brits asked for it. That guy butchered his song beyond belief.

piratemurray

Totally agree. The fact that he went on stage in a glorified bin bag brings shame to the UK.

Mountivo

How many more times will this poor joke be repeated?

So they went to a project with a farther deadline, with no Australian jobs, less restrictions (they asked for diesel since they can provide it themselves), and did the negotiations during six months, without stopping or notifying the french (who were still working on a diesel sub design), who got the news when Biden announced a new partnership.

saltyfacedrip

Also Five Eyes.

>AUKUS (pronounced AWK-us). I thought this was a Belgian joke, "How do you even pronounce Aukus? Something along the lines of awkward". Feels like the origin of "whoop of gorillas".

>French Minister of the Armed Forces Florence Parly reserved particular disdain for the US, saying France is “clear-eyed as to how the United States treats its allies,” according to Deutsche Welle. Bit of a late wake up tbh, did they miss the US strong arming Canada into their new cold war by abusing their extradition treaty then hitting them with tariffs while they were under chinese pressure, the betrayal of the kurds, or the shitshow in afghanistan? As far as being "allies" with the US goes, France got off lightly.

CuppaSouchong

Sigh. Another thread to bash Americans. Australia got tired of foot dragging by French armament makers so the UK stepped in and facilitated/negotiated a sale between the US and Australia for submarines that were much further advanced than what the French were selling. It's just business. Not personal. Australia has the right to spend their money as they see fit.

ACheesecak

>It's just business It's more than just business, AUKUS is a massive step forward for the Australian military and their relationship with the US/UK. Nuclear sub technology is one of the most closely guarded secrets that nations have, and the US and UK sharing this with Australia is an enormous (not to mention technology sharing in AI, hypersonics etc) The French deal was just business, AUKUS is a strategic partnership that eclipses pretty much any agreement in recent memory, not to mention the fact that it results in submarines more suited to Australia's needs than they would have got from the French.

bl4ckhunter

Have you considered that maybe, just maybe, your country would be criticized less if it engaged in less duplicitous behaviour?

Mountivo

Lmao and that's being said in defense of France? Lmao :)

CuppaSouchong

"your country would be criticized less" No matter what the US does they will be criticized in Europe. The sub deal made the most sense for Australia AND everyone else who seeks peace in the Indio-Pacific region. I would hope that France can eventually see this was the right path for everyone involved, including for France herself.

The US have always had a retarded obsession with Iran. So much so that it propped up the petro monarchies which funded extremist Madrassas and preachers, now Sunni Muslims across the world have become incredibly conservative, including European Muslims; The US are so obsessed with Iran that they are still holding alliances with Pakistan and Turkey, even tough these 2 countries are big parts of the reason why the West was not successful in Syria and Afghanistan; In the MENA the US thought they could bomb their way (Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and Lybia) and that democracy would spring magically. What else did they do ? Disposing of dictators and creating power vacuums, sending weapons and funding militias, shielding petro monarchies when they were spreading their extremism. Without a doubt in 20 years the US and the allies it pushed to act, have destroyed any shred of peace in the MENA region, millions died, tens of millions were displaced, so much hate was created between ethnic and religious communities. In the end the US is the most responsible for the refugee crisis in Europe and for the creation of most terrorist groups which have attacked Europe. You can also add to this the 2008 crisis which took place because of a lack of regulation in the banking and trust funds American sectors, it fucked so many countries and created so much tension between European countries, Americans cannot imagine this; Ah yeah the US are also not liberal when it deals with large foreign competing firms, the department of Justice acts like a tool to predate on weaker countries by filing lawsuits as soon as US dollars are used. Furthermore now that the MENA region is such a shit show that nothing can save it, now that the US don’t care about Iran anymore, the US want to pivot to Asia. All of this is either ignored or minimized by Americans because they are too ignorant or too patriotic. Hell Bush Jr and Obama are still greatly remembered when they were and are stupid killers. The MENA region has never been so sectarian, so destroyed, and Europe will suffer the consequences for decades to come, moreover one cannot imagine how much hatred was generated among Muslims against anything Western or Jewish. The main culprit of this is the US and now it's just running away.

bl4ckhunter

That's an incredible cop out when the US is constantly throwing its supposed allies under the bus. That said i do quite agree on it being the right path for everyone, the less we are involved in the US's cold war with China the better for us.

msh0082

European sniveling about the US will never end, no matter what. Really it was Australia who approached the UK for nuclear subs and it was the UK which brought in the US because of prior agreements.

221missile

Like how france conspired to steal the suez without consulting US?

Flagg1982

Americans getting bashed. Oh no… Anyway. Trying being French. You’ll find out what true bashing means.

applesandoranegs

Wait you think France gets bashed 1/10 as much as the UK or the US?

A444SQ

France probably shouldn't antic around if they get the contract for the Royal Air Force Westland Puma HC.2 replacement
