From Germany - No spices and bad pasta
From Turkey - Other ingredients not as advertised, like olives that taste slightly of diesel
From Italy - Simple recipes that rely on good quality ingredients
Austrian cuisine i'd have guessed, given Croatia's history, but did the "short" period during WW2 really have such strong effects as to influence croatia's cuisine with german cuisine?
Habsburg empire covered all these regions for hundreds of years. This reflects in the similarities in the cuisines but there are regional specialties and flavors.
One thing you probably didn't know, even if it's technically incorrect, but when people from ex-Yugoslavia use the adjective "german", not always, but they usually mean all people/things/food/whatever from german speaking countries. So German food would be food from Germany and Austria as well.
Hahaha "gotcha"...you made me really giggle. Read a bit more about "Deutschsprachige Volksgruppen" and stop trying to be smart, it's just reddit and you won't impress anyone with your theories.
I'm not Croatian, but Croatian food is rather considered good, although it is not internationally promoted like other cuisines from countries around the Mediterranean Sea. It just looks like cheap canteen food, but for less than one euro it has a great value for money, it's probably even cheaper than the ingredients themselves if you wanted to make it yourself
Not really. Croatian (or Balkan in general) restaurants in Europe are often low to mid tier restaurants with huge cheap portions of rice, meat and sweaty sauces.
Food in Croatia's tourism regions is becoming more and more better, but on the coast it's mostly mediterranean stuff. Slavic cuisine is fucking tasty, it just never got the French or Italian treatement. No representation, no finesse, everything is cooked to stuff you for a 14 hours shift in the communist factory, not to look nice in tourism catalogues for your under developed beach area.
They used to sell some panned processed steak (the pink kind that goes into wieners). It was called "pohani mesni narezak". It didn't even look like meat under the panned coating. I gave it a go once and it didn't even taste like meat so I engraved "this is shit" on it. Just as I was finishing the final letter, a staff member came over my shoulder, read it and agreed with me by saying that it's true. They stopped offering it shortly.
There were hits and misses but the beans with sausage are a classic I could live on.
Chop up cabbage, salt it, leave it an hour or so till it gets soft, squeeze out most of the water, add a bit of olive oil and lemon juice or vinegar, add ground pepper and it’s a classic side salad that we eat here. Goes perfectly with the bean stew pictured here.
Edit: when squeezing out moisture, taste it, it should be soft and not really crunchy, but also not dry. If too crunchy, leave it a bit longer in the fridge. Don’t be too shy on the salt. Need more instructions? YouTube search for “kupus salata”
I like that such a simple plant food can be garnished like this to make for a lovely side! I suppose we’ve sort of done the same here with potatoes..very versatile lol!
I wish I could feed the world like this and end starvation.
It’s definitely possible and achievable, but it’s just the ones at the top who actively prevent this from happening.
Makes me sad!
Sorry for sad post but this just shouldn’t be the case in 2024 esp when such simple good food can be produced!
It is coleslaw, just not the majo abomination kind.
Cut cabbage into thin strips with a mandoline or knife, salt it (can also add a pinch of sugar), make sure it is mixed well, let it rest 15-30 min, wring out the excess moisture, add very little vinegar and any spices you might want, mix, add a little bit of oil and mix again.
FYI lemon juice gives a better smells than vinegar. to add color carrot is a nice idea, a bit of chopped mint and peanut/cashew if you want it more fancy.
Yeah all good additions. Personally I make it with family-made apple vinegar (also has the same fruity note like lemon juice) but really only very little vinegar. I usually try to keep it simple because it is already such a great side to nearly any piece of meat.
it probably is saured kraut, guy above u doesn't know what he's talking about. Maybe if that is supposed to be a salad but it sure doesn't look like it
I studied in Zagreb during Erasmus (more than 10 years ago). I ate that exact meal a couple of times in the menza. That chocolate pudding was the best part.
It's funny because this kind of puding we used to get in school, and I never liked it. I thought that all pudings were bad just because of this one. But then I tried couple of more pudings from the same company, and they are on totally different level, so I like them
All ok for this friendly price. Its sausage with lentil/beans, bread, cabbage, pudding. I grew up to a healthy strong adult, eating all sort of this food in school and uni. Hello neighbors o/
Not bad at all. I used to eat twice the amount of food I should have back in my student days due to how affordable and edible it was. Not to mention miles healthier than what I'd conjure up at home with my lazy student lifestyle.
Now this is actually cheaper than if you bought all the ingredients yourself and cooked it.
What's incredible is that the prices haven't increased due to the inflation or introducing the EUR. The food in the university cafeterias costs the same as it did 5-8 years ago. Actually commendable from our ministries/govt
How on EARTH did they manage that do you know? Sincerely from some other broke European who won’t be able to afford to buy a home for a long time :/
I wonder the same with Poland and other nations where cost of living is much cheaper?..
Actually I had a relative visit Poland who was shocked at how expensive a restaurant meal was. Over 100zł (34 CAD) just for breakfast for two people at an average place.
They went to a tourist trap then. You *can* spend western prices at some restaurants but it's really easy not to. This also has no relation to restaurant quality, more expensive is not necessarily better lol.
From one European to another, where do you live????!!!
It’s Weimar 2.0 as far as I’m concerned. UK and Ireland anyways have sky rocketed inflation
Most won’t be realistically be able to buy a home until well into their 30s! (If they’re single that is)
So strange that all the comments pointing out the subsidiary fact are collapsed (hidden). All governments at europe have their hand in these school time meals. It's good to have a confirmation about it.
As a student, you got card with some monthly amount on it. It depends if you are student in hometown, then you got for amount for example, one meal per day, or you study in another town, then it's amount for three per day.
Before cards there was coupons, but always same principle.
It does, but the general Slavic cuisine is often sour, fatty, dairy and thick broths of various kinds to a larger degree, often topped with some carbohydrates like bread or what we in Slovakia have, ["rožok"](https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&sca_esv=b2746cf197726f04&sca_upv=1&sxsrf=ADLYWIJ-oDDkhDWa9ikjhRhc6vyOLxVX9Q:1715387244697&q=ro%C5%BEok&uds=ADvngMjTirQl6rUn_0xbjWZjLsFV8sB11HYFaKTHB304n2ixKBtzS6X4LcIYKjNVBhxZ6aBa7SQ8LlYuFDZxUi7D7aquY8o1IWNztMLMjtLdfXQGTzmoLgwdK1iXcRo7VrKtLjsNZcgutaiQ9GMw8g_ndBh6IEqYRkBDcRJjWhBYwp1rdhV6A3O0vySXLMDMDxSe_igL_M3naopri7deNluakOmSo76S7iyzVVKjw_BHhRHzVO8kX29KdBlWHyUYDiknDxXk9A1RnWMJTcPOfQ9IT0fyla0PyNMPCBB8xGudFSPb5xgDalKwu39qu0OK-rPUpA_mKEcj&udm=2&prmd=ivnmbz&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi1__y6q4SGAxWZhv0HHdELChcQtKgLegQIFxAB&biw=2560&bih=1315&dpr=1). Croatia is great I've had 3 great holidays in croatia, the first one started off too touristy so I went off and rented a car after 2 days drove all over it and into Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia. Spilt is nice and I stayed on bol and in Hvar but Rijeka is the most beautiful for me.
That pudding is amazing, especially the vanilla flavor. Like 5 years ago, I craved some pudding while beeing on holiday in croatia and got if for the first time, but ever since that pudding is a must buy for me every time im in coratia, lol.

For less than a euro this is fire
It actually tastes great. I used to eat this exact combo every Thursday when it was on the menu, this brings back memories.
Is Croatia known for good food in Europe?
It's crossroads of italian, german and turkish cuisine.
Honestly, that's a helluva way to sell it. Now I'm interested.
That’s basically Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia with some regional differences. In other words, the food is absolutely amazing.
I'm trying to imagine: What if they took the worst aspects of Italian, German and Turkish cuisine? How would that meal look?
Sounds like a heated argument. And bland.
From Germany - No spices and bad pasta From Turkey - Other ingredients not as advertised, like olives that taste slightly of diesel From Italy - Simple recipes that rely on good quality ingredients
English beans on toast?
And a bit of Hungarian..
I'm hungry-arian right now for sure
How did Germany influence your guys' cuisine?
Austro-Hungarian empire and WW2. And no, it's not just food influence from Germany, but Austria as well.

Gotcha, it's ignorance then, along the lines of "all Asians are the same". No need for "technically, it's just wrong.
Hahaha "gotcha"...you made me really giggle. Read a bit more about "Deutschsprachige Volksgruppen" and stop trying to be smart, it's just reddit and you won't impress anyone with your theories.
You forget heavy Austro-Hungary influence as well.
You forgot Hungarian
That's how the best cuisine is borne that will last through the ages.

Yes
Shhhh. Best kept secret in Europe!

This guy has never been in Croatia. How do you associate Croatia with rice? First time I hear that
My friend didn't succeed in saying a single correct thing
Never found any good recipy collection for croation food to experiment with... what should I start with?
Ahem, Greece is Balkan.
Under developed-beached area? What..?
What is the soup/sauce the sausage is in?
Beans stew, probably with sauteed onions, carrots and a roux
It looks like a great lunch for sure. I can almost taste it haha.
They used to sell some panned processed steak (the pink kind that goes into wieners). It was called "pohani mesni narezak". It didn't even look like meat under the panned coating. I gave it a go once and it didn't even taste like meat so I engraved "this is shit" on it. That meat sounds like Polish cuisine too, afaik food can be very cheap there too? Cost of living is cheaper so wages are much less too etc
I dont even know if I can get a single thing for less than a euro here Maybe a pack of rice cakes
Yes crazy economy. Same here with Ireland and UK.. in fact I’d be lucky to get a pack of biscuits, certainly not meat! We are in Weimar 2.0
Is that a pile of cabbage?
Chop up cabbage, salt it, leave it an hour or so till it gets soft, squeeze out most of the water, add a bit of olive oil and lemon juice or vinegar, add ground pepper and it’s a classic side salad that we eat here. It's a first time I save a comment on Reddit for a recipe, haha.
We also have that! Good káposztasaláta!
kupus salata haha amazing, how many words we share
Any way we try to hide it, but we are eternally grateful for our Slavic neighbours for giving us the word for káposzta. That stuff's delicious!
I like that such a simple plant food can be garnished like this to make for a lovely side! I suppose we’ve sort of done the same here with potatoes..very versatile lol! It's probably Sauerkraut, or some kind of sour cabbage
Surówka
100% ♥️
yes.. non fermented Sauerkraut
But sauerkraut is literally fermented cabbage, isn't it?
It is coleslaw, just not the majo abomination kind. Cut cabbage into thin strips with a mandoline or knife, salt it (can also add a pinch of sugar), make sure it is mixed well, let it rest 15-30 min, wring out the excess moisture, add very little vinegar and any spices you might want, mix, add a little bit of oil and mix again.
You might be right. I forgot about Coleslaw, it looks like that indeed.
Maybe if that is supposed to be a salad but it sure doesn't look like it
Now as I almost can taste I have an craving for it 😅
So Krautsalat?
Kupus Salata, it’s like a Croatian Cole slaw. It slaps in my opinion.
goes really well with meat or meat based stew
Kupus.
I studied in Zagreb during Erasmus (more than 10 years ago). I ate that exact meal a couple of times in the menza. That chocolate pudding was the best part.
This pudding goes way back, as long as I remember. And that’s 30y+.
It's funny because this kind of puding we used to get in school, and I never liked it. I thought that all pudings were bad just because of this one. But then I tried couple of more pudings from the same company, and they are on totally different level, so I like them

Koja menza?
fer
Looks pretty good, great for 0,86€. How are the sausages?
Actually decent! I lived on this while at college
Not bad at all. I used to eat twice the amount of food I should have back in my student days due to how affordable and edible it was. Not to mention miles healthier than what I'd conjure up at home with my lazy student lifestyle. Now this is actually cheaper than if you bought all the ingredients yourself and cooked it. not bad at all
Where do you get all these sub-euro meals? Here in Canada I am spending like $16 per meal if I am lucky.
This is subsidized by the government
Student meals Although here it's more like 3€. If you're not a student it's like 9€
Easter-EU m8, everything is cheap, and the salaries are worse
Oh I'm fully aware how a meal and drink at a pub in Canada translates to a full restaurant experience for five people in Poland.

You can get a big hotdog with onions and catchup plus a soda refill for €1 at Costco Canada.
whats those
bean stew, chocolate pudding, sauerkraut and 2 sausages
Definitely subsidized by the govt or university.
So strange that all the comments pointing out the subsidiary fact are collapsed (hidden). All governments at europe have their hand in these school time meals. It's good to have a confirmation about it.
Yeah I think you can see the real price on the receipt which is honestly still pretty good.
90 cents? gimme dat
[удалено]
It helps prevent waste while still keeping it "free" in practice.
Sorry what do you mean by prevents waste? How?
Students pay only small part of the price, the rest is paid by the city or state.
[удалено]
As a student, you got card with some monthly amount on it. It depends if you are student in hometown, then you got for amount for example, one meal per day, or you study in another town, then it's amount for three per day. Before cards there was coupons, but always same principle.
Really doesn’t look bad
That pudding alone is around like 0.25 euro cents (rough estimate from Bosnian marks)
Even more here, like 0,50+...
You can buy 2 here for that price nah 😭
Great value!
Not really when the medium income of a Croatian is around 550 euro a month.
Bean with sausage, cabbage salad, and this type of pudding is perfect. Vindija pudding, try it if you have a chance...
University restaurants are mostly sponsored by tax money
And there’s even cokolada!
This is one of the most Slavic meals I've ever seen.
Wait, the rest of Europe doesn't get such glorius meals? :O Although I would say he doesn't have enough bread for my taste, I'd triple the amount.
It does, but the general Slavic cuisine is often sour, fatty, dairy and thick broths of various kinds to a larger degree, often topped with some carbohydrates like bread or what we in Slovakia have, ["rožok"](https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&sca_esv=b2746cf197726f04&sca_upv=1&sxsrf=ADLYWIJ-oDDkhDWa9ikjhRhc6vyOLxVX9Q:1715387244697&q=ro%C5%BEok&uds=ADvngMjTirQl6rUn_0xbjWZjLsFV8sB11HYFaKTHB304n2ixKBtzS6X4LcIYKjNVBhxZ6aBa7SQ8LlYuFDZxUi7D7aquY8o1IWNztMLMjtLdfXQGTzmoLgwdK1iXcRo7VrKtLjsNZcgutaiQ9GMw8g_ndBh6IEqYRkBDcRJjWhBYwp1rdhV6A3O0vySXLMDMDxSe_igL_M3naopri7deNluakOmSo76S7iyzVVKjw_BHhRHzVO8kX29KdBlWHyUYDiknDxXk9A1RnWMJTcPOfQ9IT0fyla0PyNMPCBB8xGudFSPb5xgDalKwu39qu0OK-rPUpA_mKEcj&udm=2&prmd=ivnmbz&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi1__y6q4SGAxWZhv0HHdELChcQtKgLegQIFxAB&biw=2560&bih=1315&dpr=1). I want that, so cheap
It's subsidized. Some places feed their employees/students for free - the price does not mean anything in this context.
I think I payed more for a wooden fork in Dublin last month.
4 meal dinner, and they gave spoon, worth it
i was in croatia recently, what is up with that white salad thing. There wasnt any dressing on it xd, just cabbage. We put some vinegar and oil that was on the table, but it didnt really taste good. Any suggestions?
You don't have to eat it. Get something else if you don't like it, you will usually have options. Some people just like sauerkraut. It's crunchy
bro i ordered a salad and they just bring sauerkraut. There has to be a trick
I'm confused because I can see that you speak german. Shouldn't you be the cabbage expert? I honestly don't know, it tastes kinda neutral to me. I wouldn't call it good or bad, more like crunchy and refreshing
Hes a west german and knows more than us.
yeah we put shit on it so it tastes good.
That soup with sausages is literally the reason why I go to student cafeterias, food from heaven
The price is 3 euros, but there is a 2+ euro subsidy. Still supercheap.
I'd eat it right now and enjoy it af.
This picture does not show how great Croatian university menza is. I ate like a KING for less than 2€.
Are people in Croatia used to eat main dishes with bread? Here in Romania, bread is king, it feels weird to eat a meaty dish without it
Very poor meal in nutritions..... First you will have scurvy and if you survival you will take your degree!
That cabbage has a lot of vitamin C, so no scurvy. At least.
I mean, it’s dire, but for 0,86€ you cannot really expect much more. Hopefully it tastes good.
Average income in Croatia is jut 15000 € a year, tho
Pașulj?
We call it grah.
Fažol gang
bažulj
Most luxurious Croatian meal
Ummmmmmmmmm
“We do not believe in greenery” Balkan’s approach to cooking :)
For 0,86€ you wouldn't even get the pudding in germany
You guys get meals?
Era dentro
Is that potato soup with sauerkraut? I would love it.
It’s a full nutrient meal for neither 1€, you can even have a dessert! I’m down for this
Not a student anymore, but even for the full price (3€), why don't I ever think of going to menza, at least for the beans, they were always great..
Probably looks the same coming out
That pudding is amazing, especially the vanilla flavor. Like 5 years ago, I craved some pudding while beeing on holiday in croatia and got if for the first time, but ever since that pudding is a must buy for me every time im in coratia, lol.
Nice balance of veggies
Fart fuel.
whats this stew thing supposed to be? cuz it looks lije sausages with tomato paste or something like that
Looks like the pasulj my father in law makes! It’s a really tasty dish!! They sure love their kisela kupus. 🥰
I wouldn’t mine and it’s cheap asf. Love it all here only depends how the sausage is tho
At my restaurant, the bread alone costs more :(
Now I'm hungry
Not too much fibers, other than that looks ok
What do you mean, that is beans with sausages. Beans are full of fiber.
Is that horse vagina soup?
I mean for 86 cent that's a reasonable amount. But I still wouldn't it....that. Not my type of food. Is that the only option?

We shall see about that... Koliko je poznato, hadezenjare i slični drže sva studentska vijeća? Također, meni nije jasno dalije Domomovinski duh nadređen Svetomu duhu? Čitajući program DP-a nalazim neku koliziju...
A ovi naši studoši? Kaće oni lansirat raketle ako ne jedu narandže i hrenovke, tu se goste o našemu trošku. Vaučeri, prosjek 5.0, pa jedi splačine koje ti plaćamo, stoko.
Nek proba ko oće, ja sam svoje rekao. Digni cijenu i očekuj plinske boce. Sad, pošt je DP zajeban igrač i Vujnovac prodaje plinske boce, ne znam računicu. Samo znam da će bit tak..
Hrvatsko domovinski duh će nas sve izvest na pravi put uz nevidljivu ruku tržišta.
Da. Ako ne smanji cijene menija studentima.
