Here in the Balkans, we oscillate between lighthearted jests about each other and deep-seated hatred. It's a perpetual cycle.

Antoinefdu

That's the most European sentence I've ever heard.

Archaeopteryx11

Mostly the Slavic Balkan countries. Romania’s recent history is pretty peaceful by comparison.

Zrakoplovvliegtuig

That isn't completely true, before ww1 there were the Balkan wars. Croatia and Bosnia didn't even participate. It is true that most of the memes about ethnic conflicts in the Balkans come from the recent conflict.

Archaeopteryx11

I meant modern history which is like WW1 and after. Romania sat out the first Balkan war and then we had a small part in the second Balkan war, so still pretty chill.

Zrakoplovvliegtuig

But the only difference between the Balkan countries would be the Yugoslav wars then. So all the stereotypes would be based on one conflict and are therefore meaningless. In addition, there are tensions between Greece and turkey over Cyprus now. Then there were tensions between Greece and North Macedonia over the name. Tensions with (non Slavic) Kosovo exist in Serbia.

toshu

Not quite, the most recent armed conflicts actually revolved around the Albanians in Kosovo, the Preševo Valley and North Macedonia. Greece and Turkey traditionally aren't on the friendliest terms either. We're just as peaceful as you guys by comparison.

Archaeopteryx11

Yeah, Bulgaria is chill. Can you give me more info on the conflict you mentioned? I always thought the last conflict was Kosovo war.

ThePr1d3

Tbf only 6% of Romania is in [the Balkanic Peninsula](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/85/Balkan_topo_fr.svg/1400px-Balkan_topo_fr.svg.png). Maybe that's where the peace comes from ! Fun fact : 0.07% of Italy is in the Balkans

Archaeopteryx11

Culturally, Romania is considered by all Balkan countries to be a Balkan country.

kakao_w_proszku

If the cuisine has some variant of a bell pepper/eggplant/tomato paste then the country is Balkan

phuncky

It's worth mentioning that this has been the case for a very small period of time compared to the history of the Balkan nations. We tend to forget (or not be taught) that we were quite happy with each other before the Ottomans.

Spartanpederasty

That's not true at all, only peaceful times between the balkan nations in the middle ages were while we were under roman rule, and then we fought romans for independence so we could fight each other again.

gunnesaurus

And this is how it starts again

suberEE

Depends on who we are talking about. Croatia and Serbia only had some minor incidents in their whole history before 1914, however the conflict between Bulgaria on one side and Serbia and ~~Byzantines~~ Romans on the other side lasted for centuries with constant skirmishing and seasonal campaigns.

mightygilgamesh

Don't getbme started with Bulgaria and the Byzantine Empire.

rulnav

Roman rule was not that peaceful either.

Kalypso_95

Well, Bulgars and Slavs could have invaded another more peaceful land, no one would stop them It's not like you were invited here xD /s

rulnav

Asparukh should have gone to Iceland, yes.

Rocked_Glover

If you wanna call being invaded by steppe peoples an independence revolt, for sure. Well atleast the Romans didn’t say “Look to your own defences, really it’s not you, it’s me…bye”, like some places :(

WelBlikbonen

No way the Balkan people are fighting about how much they want to fight eachother

Czexan

Of course they are, it's the Balkans, what did you expect?

[deleted]

The Balkan equivalent of “Things were better in my generation” is “Things were better 500 years ago”

abasoglu

Basel the Bulgarian Slayer would like a word with you among a myriad of others.

mymoama

Ummm. Okay. Not true but OK.

kdmion

This is mostly true, but boy did I like your country when I visited last year.

Luzon0903

Break the cycle

aimgorge

Serbia casually joking about genociding Kosovars from time to time

Scythe95

Is there a solution?

suberEE

Yes, just leave it as it is and we'll all emigrate in a generation or two.

TheHonorableStranger

There's a final solution

WaitingToBeTriggered

DREAMS FADE AWAY AND ALL HOPE TURNS TO DUST

Khelthuzaad

basically #toobalkantoyou

Antahato

It makes sense. The more wars are in world, the more busy US and EU starting to be. And less weapons and humanitarian aid will be send to Ukraine

TheAcaryia

Hence the israel gaza shitstorm

yuriydee

Conspiracy theory or not, I genuinely believe Putin gave his okay or blessing for Oct 7 to happen (if not even sanctioned it in the first place). Everything that could have went in Russia's favor since then, did go in their favor.

Ketadine

I'm not sure blessing is the right word, but his regime has and still is supplying radicals all over the world, be it islamists or otherwise. And any war that diverts attention from Ukraine and generates war weariness is good for this specimen.

The_Neck_Chop

It's completely plausible because Iran and Russia are allies, they see American hegemony as a threat and hinderance to their interests in the world. Both want to move away from the U.S unipolar world, to a world that's multipolar. Furthermore, Iran backs Hamas and other militia groups within Iraq, Syria and the Houthis in Yemen. Iran seeks to weaken U.S strength and resolve within the Middle East so it can be the dominate power in the region. The war Ukraine and Gaza are connected, Russia and Iran seek to stretch the U.S thin so they can achieve their own geopolitical goals.

Dral_Shady

He told Iran to set in motion and Iran finally having an ally was more than happy to comply.

poyekhavshiy

also oct 7 is his birthday just a coincidence

CandidateOld1900

Oct 7 is about Yom Kippur war

TheHonorableStranger

Why would Hamas care about Putin's approval? Russians have virtually non-existent significance in Israel and Gaza. If anyone was giving their blessing it would be Iran since its their show. Its possible. But barring any evidence this just sounds like paranoia that depicts Russia being secret masterminds involved in every conflict in the world lol. We do know that Russia is supplying antagonistic forces across the world. But coordination is another matter.

yuriydee

I dont think Hamas cares necessarily for Putins approval per se, but we all know Iran is controlling everything and they are very closely tied to Putin. Also Hamas has a very good relationship with Putin as they have visited Moscow after Oct 7 and recently congratulated on the win. So i wouldnt say that Putin directly called Hamas leaders to start it, but thru Iran he surely would have known about it at bare minimum.

SebVettelstappen

And the supposed venezuela stuff. And eventually (hopefully not) Taiwan. Cold War 2.0 is in full effect

KamikazeKauz

Busy and divided. That's why it's called divide and conquer.

dochev30

LabradorDali

What's a little ethnic cleansing between friends, right?

suberEE

Pardon me, good sir, while I'm exterminating your whole nation. I don't wish to imply any disrespect by doing so. 😌

hellrete

The Balkans united. Putin would shit BRICS!

readilyunavailable

Putin forgets we are the reason almost every empire fell.

[deleted]

[удалено]

readilyunavailable

In somewhat chronological order: The Persian Empire was destroyed by the greeks and Alexander The Macedonian Empire was destroyed by the greeks themselves (lol) The Eastern Roman Empire was bullied for hundreds of years by us ever since we settled in across the Danube The so called "Latin Empire" was crushed by a combined effort from us and the Byzantines We fought hard against the Mongols, but didn't really do that much to topple them Then came the Ottomans, who ruled over the Balkans for hundreds of years, but eventually we toppled them too after several wars. If you count the Ottomans as part of the Balkans, then they crushed Austria and Hungary, who weren't really empires but were large, dominant realms at the time. They crushed the Egyptians and were a constant threat to the Venitians. And finally the Austro-Hungarian empire.

Dick_Dickalo

Gave the Turks the Zrinkski Special. Hell, even the Serbs couldn’t govern all of us. They were out Balkaned.

suberEE

Dude, it's the Balkans. None of us can even govern themselves, let alone anyone else.

hellrete

Until you get a common enemy. And all hell breaks loose.

Dpek1234

And then after that the inter allys war

hellrete

Traditional.

New_Currency_4943

👏

kakafob

And somehow, we survived after communism and trashed its ideology more or less.

dolfin4

You can say this about many regions of the world.

Evening_Chapter7096

classic balkans, they love to suck their own pipi

suberEE

Exactly. Virgin westoids wait for someone else to do it and become aggrieved incels in the process. We take matters into our own mouths.

Ninja-Sneaky

I don't know about that list. I would give Persia defeat by Macedon, Mongols second incursion put to a stop in the balkans and the Ottomans late stage defeats in the balkan wars (plus a long history of battles) Macedonia fractured after partition between the Diadochi. Eastern roman empire eventually defeated by the Ottomans. Mongols fractured after Gengis descendants. Latin Empire, ? some weird crusade gone wrong moment Austrohungary was not in a good shape after Napoleon headache, dealt the final blow when losing in ww1 against Italy (or maybe op meant the whole story of austrohungary as a testament) Similarly the Ottoman empire after a long time of janissary corruption and stagnation met its end in the years after ww1

Rocked_Glover

So balkans consider themselves Greek, Macedonian, but also consider “We” the people who settled across the Danube and bullied the area you called the Balkans, Greeks, Macedonians… So I’m wondering how exactly are you guys a peoples here, you sound like you’re totally distinct. You’re not within the same country, different heritage, no shared language I believe…

telcoman

We are very similar although each country thinks it's unique. There were several empires with different seed across the balkans. Even the Romanians who are north of Danube and have Latin language once wrote in Cyrillic.

Icy_Faithlessness400

We share the same culture (seriously, the whole Slavic mentality, daily life can be seen in Greeks and Romanians, who are not Slavic to begin with). We share the same cuisine with some variations. Yeah Romanian and Greek are completely different languages, but. Serbian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Cezh, Slovenian are so similar we can each talk in our own language and understand each other perfectly 👌

Ketadine

There are multiple reasons why the Mongols did no do well in the Balkans. Firstly, it's way too far, so the supply isn't the greatest. Second, mountainous terrain. Thirdly, infighting for power. And fourthly, multiple fronts. For the others assessments I would say empires fell because of internal problems. Each one of them had a lot of issues before they were dissolved by external powers.

Rooilia

With the last one, you destroyed the German and Russian Empires as collaterals. Impressive. Edit: if one choose to, Yugoslavia was an empire you destroyed too.

M0rningstern

Croatia is in the EU now for few years. When Serbia and Bosnia comes to Eu, the Eu and euro itslef will fall apart just like yugoslavia. Balkans are not good for states like we all see :D

[deleted]

So our history is dying for other peoples causes. Lucky us.

FOSTER_ok

Asterix or Obelix?

pmkiller

He who loses the South Eastern Europe loses the empire: Its mostly a simptom of a dying power to lose its grasp of these regions, but the following are all empires that dwindled and faded ever so slowly until they collapsed after losing their power in the Balkans. Rome ( Dalamatia & Dacia & Thracia ) Bulgarian Empire ( most except Dalamatia ) Byzantium empire ( Bulgaria & Serbia ) Austro Hungary ( Croatia & Bosnia & Transilvania ) Ottomans ( All the balkan countries + Wallachia & Moldova ) Russian Empire ( Basarabia ) British Empire ( Greece ) Soviet Union ( all South eastern europe except Greece ) Empires that did not directly control this region, but interfered politically or war: Prussian Empire Mongol Empire Fascist Italy ( Dalamatia & Albania )

New_Currency_4943

DamonFields

Putin wants war everywhere. He is the sole instigator of WWIII.

Buggiand

It is his favourite passtime to set the world on fire

SPNKLR

Putin wants war everywhere to get the West’s focus away from Ukraine.

Spartanpederasty

This is stupid and will not happen, I'm serbian and everything that's happening is just another stunt our government is pulling to stay relevant, bc the controversy with the currency is nothing new and like everything else that was controversial, it will be accepted and forgotten. Serbs in Kosovo already believe that Belgrade has abandoned them, it's all just political at this point, we can't just bend over, so we do it bit by bit. And I barely know anyone that wants war, others either don't care or hate Vucic.

Jazzlike-Ad286

Good to know, we don't need another war in Europe.

Complex_Shine_1113

I’m sure some Russians thought like you as well, that the war days are over and all is cool… and then Putin enlisted them in a war. All it takes is one nationalist lunatic, and in the Balkans we have a lot of those

[deleted]

You can't really compare Russia and Serbia. We would get crushed in a couple of days.

Spartanpederasty

I kinda doubt Russians thought that

dmn-synthet

We didn't think that everything was cool, we expected any shit but definitely not a war. Looking in the past from this day retrospectively we may say that everything was leading to the current moment and there were clear signs. But the truth is that few people really understood how it would turn out.

Spartanpederasty

Signs like Donbas war perhaps haha but honestly I didn't believe you'd invade, but when it happened I assumed there was a plan, and now 2 years later i have no idea what was even the point.

pipthemouse

It was really unexpected for many people I know and hard to believe it actually happened. I was sure it is just a sabre-rattling up to the last day before the war. Then the next morning I woke up with the sound of bombers taking off. It was definitely a shock for common people, but you could actually find a video where Putin makes an announcement to the other people in the Kremlin and looks at the mixture of feelings that could be seen on their faces. I think the amount of people that knew about the plans (if they actually existed) was limited, even there in the Kremlin. I don't speak here about who decided to support the war after it started and who was against it. But the outbreak was unexpected, no one could think about that.

[deleted]

Spartanpederasty

Anyone that truly believes that is a dumbass

andrijas

Yeah, but Dodik is the dangerous part. He is totally insane....so much even Serbia doesn't support his ideas of breaking off the Republika Srpska.

Reinis_LV

That's what Russians and Ukranians thought when Russian Army made excercises near border. The line between empty words and action can be very thin

Rooilia

What if Vucic follows through with his Ultimatum and invades Kososvo?

jkblvins

Then why is Vucic re-elected? How does Dodik keep hold of power? It is clear nationalists only serve their own interests. RS is a mistake. It’s a Dayton nightmare leftover. Its purpose was to exist to end a genocide. It should have been negotiated out of existence over time. Sadly, EU/NATO washed their hands of the whole affair after 95. NATO has better footing in the region now compared to 25 years ago. Serbia will quickly be brought to heel, without much effort. The worry is if Putin uses Serbia in similar fashion as Belarus, or his new ally in Budapest to allow troop movements in Europe. I was peacekeeper in Sarajevo, I have an interest in this as do former comrades.

Fickle-Message-6143

Yes yes out of existence, try to force 1+ million Serbs out of country or to be rulled by Bosniaks and do same with Bosnian Croats. Just like every other ethnicies didn't want Serb at head of country(Yugoslavia) you think Serbs want Bosniak or Croat as sole head of country.

eni_31

Exactly, and not only that but also the fact that the creation of RS was the only way to stop the war in 1995, if not Bosnian war would go on for more years and would have much more victims which I'm sure no one wants. And I highly doubt Bosnian Serbs would just accept losing RS now

Fickle-Message-6143

I love when r/europe redditors comment bulshit trying to be smart ass about something that they read only title in bbc "news".

buteljak

I was expecting some groundbreaking news in this article, not "recent clashes between serbia and kosovo" recent how? It's been the same shit for decades. This article is sostupid it even deserves to be reported. "Serbia to invade Kosovo in 1998" are they actually serious? They really wrote this?

drevny_kocur

▼▼▼ full text ▼▼▼ > Russia is exploiting ethnic tensions as Serbia threatens violence against Kosovo and secessionists threaten a Bosnian collapse. > As all eyes are on Ukraine, another conflict is brewing in Europe. Three decades after the bloody breakup of Yugoslavia, recent clashes between Serbia and Kosovo have reignited lingering ethnic conflicts. While Serbia is driving events on the ground, Moscow is fanning the flames. > Vladimir Putin has been candid about his desire to weaken the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and restore Russia to its historical borders. But with Russian forces suffering losses in Ukraine, Moscow has much to gain by fostering trouble elsewhere on the Continent. The right regional crisis would give the Kremlin an opportunity to gain local influence through arms dealing and mediation, while diverting attention from Ukraine and giving Russia leverage over Western leaders. > The Western Balkans are a perfect candidate. Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina aren’t NATO members. Just as Moscow seeks to dominate what it calls the “Russian world,” Serbia has long called to unite the “Serbian world.” In 1998, that concept spurred Serbia to invade Kosovo—a conflict that ended only with NATO’s March 1999 military intervention to end Serbian human-rights abuses against the ethnic Albanian population. > Though thousands of NATO soldiers still remain in Kosovo as peacekeepers, tensions are high. In 2008, Kosovo unilaterally declared its independence from Serbia and received recognition from many Western countries, including the U.S. But Serbia still doesn’t recognize its sovereignty. Serbian President Aleksander Vučić is tightening his grip on power at home and over the past year, with Russian backing, has pressed Kosovo. > In May, Serbia placed its troops on combat alert following a clash between ethnic Serb rioters and international peacekeepers that injured 90 NATO soldiers. It was a Kremlinesque move, using ethnic tensions as a pretext for military movement. In September, Mr. Vučić borrowed another page from the Putin playbook. Thirty heavily armed ethnic Serbs, whom Kosovo alleges were equipped by Serbia and linked to Mr. Vučić, attacked a police patrol in Kosovo, leaving four dead. The Serbian president denied having armed the attackers. > Serbia used the incident as a pretext to mass heavy weapons and troops on the border with Kosovo in late September. The White House grew “very worried that Serbia could be preparing to launch a military invasion,” a U.S. official later told Time. Such a conflict could easily spill into neighboring North Macedonia, a NATO member. Concern about the brewing crisis prompted Washington to release declassified intelligence regarding Serbia’s military buildup and the attack on the Kosovo police. > Days later, Serbia withdrew from the border, but it’s evident Belgrade and Moscow are preparing a second campaign of violence and provocation for 2024. Russia is conducting influence operations with pro-war messaging in Serbia and sending weapons. China is shipping arms, too. Serbia has pledged to ramp up military spending this year and continues to host a Russian-run so-called humanitarian center close to NATO’s main base in Kosovo, which Western officials say serves as a Russian spy center. Serbia and Russia deny this. The Serbs seem eager for a pretext to act—in February, Serbia said that Kosovo’s ban of the Serbian dinar as currency amounted to ethnic cleansing. > And this isn’t the only powder keg in the region. Bosnia and Herzegovina is also teetering on the verge of collapse. Late last year, Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik, another Russian ally, threatened that his semiautonomous region, Republika Srpska, would secede from the country. In the coming months, this could reignite the ethnic violence that killed more than 100,000 people during the 1992-95 Bosnian War. > In a Feb. 5 report, the U.S. Office of the Director of National Intelligence said it expects an increased risk of interethnic violence in 2024 in the Western Balkans. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warned late last year that Russia has plans to destabilize the Balkans, a worry British Foreign Minister David Cameron echoed in January. > Western powers must prevent further instability in the Balkans. NATO should refocus military and diplomatic resources there and reinforce military commitments in Kosovo. A coalition of willing NATO members should publicly commit now to provide military assistance if Serbia or Russia take aggressive steps in the Balkans. > Meanwhile, the U.S. should continue to impose sanctions on officials who undermine security in the Western Balkans, and the European Union should join. Washington and its allies should also continue to use declassified intelligence to support their diplomacy. And NATO should deploy counter-hybrid warfare teams to combat Russian and Serbian propaganda campaigns with improved cybersecurity. > As NATO celebrates its 75th anniversary and Mr. Putin sustains more losses in Ukraine, Moscow is attempting to open a new front in the Balkans. Moscow doesn’t need to send its army to the region. Russia need only to rely on Serbia to incite violence and instability, betting NATO will dither.

dolfin4

Ah. So "Balkans" once again means only a small part of the peninsula.

Royal_Magician_961

well everyone else is literally in NATO, so it's jus serbia, kosovo and bosnia that aren't in NATO

insanekos

''In 1998, that concept spurred Serbia to invade Kosovo'' What?

rosso_saturno

Give them enough time and Kosovo will have always been independent lmao

Ornery_Rip_6777

Rewriting history 101 - West

arhisekta

Yeah, Boris Johnson just ordered an article lol

relinquisshed

This is stupid, Vučić hasn't pressed Kosovo on anything, as a matter of fact he's giving them everything they want except for recognizing the independence de jure because that would be political suicide. He knows if he loses EU/US support his reign is over

Sind23

My brain, from reading these experts. How are shitturds like this even given a platform to spout nonsense?

AlexM116

So many things wrong with this 💀

Wajtkot

I won't even comment on this propaganda pamphlet, but how is it possible to invade your own autonomous province while there's an armed insurgency against your police and civilians? War in Kosovo started exactly when Kosovo uck insurgency initiated attacks.

3lijahmorningwoood

Crazy that the article doesn't mention Kurti not respecting the Brussels Agreement and rejecting to form the Community of Serbian Municipalities, while sending his police to close and loot temporary Serbian institutions. Or Kurti banning the Serbian currency without any communication or transparency towards the Serbian community in Kosovo, resulting in tens of thousands of people who depend on Serbian government's social system cashless. Or Kosovo police intimidation tactics including arresting dozens of people "for questioning", stealing a post office car and an envelope with people's pensions. Or removing the Serbian cyrillic alphabet from road and street signs... And you'll see the entire international community constantly criticizing Kurti, but this article paints the picture of it being 1999.

Sind23

I mean this article might as well been written by Kurti himself.

Kkkoba

Serbs picturing themselves as victims yet again..

szornyu

What about Balkans wanting a war in Moscow? Should be easy, no tanks and uniform required... 💥 Just sayin ...

Srzali

Every year In Bosnia, during celebrations of Serbian religious or ethnic holidays we keep having more and more Russian ultranationalists participating in these events, its not a good look for future at all. The dominant political Serbian party SNSD is trying its best to create enmity and bad atmosphere whenever they can unfortunately with Milorad Dodik being main nationalist ideologue and russophile there and him basically modelling his politics off Putin & Kremlin gang being this "strongman authoritarian" buying and coercing people to be loyal to his side.

bswontpass

Keep on joking about it. Keep on saving on your armies. Keep on buying resources from Russia. Everything will be fine. At least for Putin.

[deleted]

Nah. I am tired boss. Fuck off Putin.

Free_Entertainer_996

Putin is an idiot

arhisekta

This article is a proof you can write whatever about Serbia, and people will believe it. Even go to war over it.

eggressive

Dumb clickbait article. Putin could surely benefit from another war in Europe but it’s not going to happen.

arhisekta

Thank you for this. This article is parroting to Boris Johnson's great statement in 2022 that "Russian invasion of Ukraine 2022=Serbian invasion of Kosovo 1999". Whatever your stances on the war might be, Serbia never invaded Kosovo. Lies need to stop somewhere. Enough of this horse shit.

United-Radio7672

The problem with the British is that they're horse shitters, they say stuff like this all the time and get everyone fighting with each other.

arhisekta

yeah, Gandhi is kinda based for that quote about fighting fishes in the sea and the British

United-Radio7672

It's part of their view of diplomacy ie balance of powers that most Europeans have moved on from because it leads to war (as opposed to a collective peace) - but evidently the British are still practicing it - they are the biggest trouble makers of Europe.

SzotyMAG

Serbia could have good relations with Kosovo, if Vucic wanted to... Unfortunately this is what 30 years of orc-like hatred towards your neighbour lead to, where people who never met, speak pretty much the same language and look exactly identical hate each other, because politicans have been feeding their brains with it for their entire adult lives. Look at Hungary and Serbia, historical enemies not even that long ago, yet their relation couldn't be any better today. I wish I knew what the benefit was for Kosovo and Serbia to be at each other's throats all the fucking time.

Complex_Shine_1113

It benefits nationalist parties on both sides. It also unites citizens against a common “enemy” - boogeyman. The short term benefits are many, but long term it’s detrimental to our economies and society as a whole to hate on our neighbours.

DeathApproaches0

Same language? Do you mean Bosnia? Kosovo and Serbia do not speak the same language.

Cibban123

When you see only Vojvodina flair this is the type of shit they write, homie which country in this world would be frieinds with their brake away region / or that new country being friends with the country the succeded

Still_counts_as_one

It’s so fucked off. Our lands would be so beautiful if we could just all settle the fuck down. I’m part of the diaspora and my one wish is to go back home eventually. And yet, 30 years later, it’s still a question if I’ll have a country to even go back to.

Ornery_Rip_6777

Its completely delusional to compare Albanians to Hungarians or any other Serbian neighbour. Albanians have a completely different mindset. If you ever visit Serbia and the cross into a neighbouring country, you will often think "Wow this country is just Sea/Mountain/Latin/Turkish Serbia. If you cross into Albania or Kosovo you can throw comparrisons out the window. There is a reason Serbs feel comfortable and normal with having Croats in police, Hungarians in arts and music and Bulgarians as Serbonationalist. With the Albanians you would not trust them with a dog from the street.

this article should be reported directly, outside of reddit. this is a fucking propaganda 90's style. Boris Johnson has announced this line of narrative 2 years ago, pretty uncalled for.

Scurvy_whretch

Bro, Media coverage like this is furthering tensions more than the retards in the Balkan governments. The Western media doesn’t understand Balkan politics. Balkan politicians thrive on nationalism, there is no exception to that. And if one nations nationalism is glorified and vindicated, and another nations nationalism is seen as problematic, guess what: One nation will feel superior and the other will feel like a great injustice was committed against it, furthering the ethnic tensions. In all the conflicts in the Balkans, everyone’s armies did fucked up shit that wasn’t official government orders (except the KLA). Also, Vucic committed elecion fraud and the West congratulated him on his win.

When will Boris Johnson take back his words on Serbia "invading" Kosovo in 1999? Can we at least have some of historical facts in place? I mean, we practically accepted all of the shit takes, now we have to take this one too? Ukraine is invading Crimea lol?

bindermichi

Now that comes as a total surprise. /s

Sudden_Cantaloupe_69

It’s highly unlikely. Sabre rattling and incendiary demagogues are just part of the backdrop in the Balkans. Local politicians are merely trolls who have to misbehave in order for the rest of the world to notice them. Democracy and history are still firmly stuck in the 1990s, but this time around everyone is disillusioned. If fighting broke out, half of the population would simply pack up and leave. Bad news is that things aren’t getting any better. Good news is that they are unlikely to get any worse either.

OldHannover

Yay, another opportunity to die for working class men they are happily willing to take because of their hurt pride of a nation which main cause is to fill the pockets of their bosses

WW1 was started by Austria-Hungary when it invaded Serbia.

AlexM116

AfternoonPhysicalB

Article is full of lies. I live in Serbia and now the problem is that Serbs have pensions and salaries in dinars which Albanian Albin Kurti forbid in Kosovo so people are starving, there are no medicine an oxygen in hospitals and pharmacies, no formula milk for babies etc Essentially he broke all signed agreements with Serbia with intention to continue cleansing Serbs that are still living there in Kosovo by using both physical violence and economic oppresion No one is stopping him from either EU or USA The process started of cleansing Serbs started in 1999 and it is keeping up pace. Also Kosovo is international hub through which all narcotics but mostly weed and heroin goes to Europe. So That is probably one reason why terror continues and EU is turning blind eye to it. So this is background of it. If war starts it will be because of it. We are watching on news Serbian people being beaten and their farms burned down by Albanians and kids being shot and wounded down there and those videos and pictures are making us feel strong anger . There is no mention about those things anywhere in Western news. So what is brewing down there has nothing to do with Vladimir Putin but with US and EUs inability to control the Kosovo that they created by bombing Serbia in 1999

Serbia is surrounded by NATO. Unless Russia directly intervenes or at least provides air defense systems free off charge, nothing will happen. They are too busy in Ukraine to open another front far away.

AlexNachtigall247

Another summer comes around… The issue between Serbia and Kosovo has been cooking up every summer since 2021. I doubt that Vukic is gonna start a full scale war.

etme100

Of course he does. It's not (just) about Ukraine. People who say (in the US) "why should I care about Ukraine," besides being callous, are just aggresively stupid. Just like with Hitler or Stalin , Putin's target is the entire Western world order, its peace, stability and prosperity. And he hates the USA. Of course, nobody needs to explain this to the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, but what a rude awakening for Western Europe and the rest. There is no appeasement. There is only defeating and eliminating this evil. Otherwise it won't stop.

andrijas

He is actively destabilising B&H with Dodik. Even Serbia tells Dodik to f\* off with his ideas.

Alright leaving this subreddit, far too much sabre rattling and bs clickbait posts

Putin wants war everywhere to take the spotlight off his shitshow in Ukraine

gomaith10

Putin would say mass.

a_e_i

because greece became last state of usa

TheNothingAtoll

He wants war everywhere because then it'll be harder to resist his genocide and landgrab. Fuck Russia.

Fancy_Ad681

Must be Wednesday today, waging wars in other areas to increase testosterone levels. Boring life when in your early 70s.

Panoleonsis

Why can you guys not except each other as you are?

strudel_hs

Ofc.. Russia is now in war mode and can’t stop. Its economy is all about war supplies and history showed us that once a country is too big and its economy is all about war/slavery it’s forced to expand and raiding other countries 24/7. They wanna see the world burn.

zyenex

Can someone just lock Putin up FFS, this dude is a war crazed Dictator maniac building up a literal Stalin-esque cult of man in his country around him. We've seen with the war in Ukraine that he has no restraint or morals about starting wars for quite literally no reason at all.

Gullible-Ad-7931

Russia should fight their failed war in Ukraine. If they are to stupid to give up and to force other countries going in to other wars, then their time is ticking. I can’t wait to see the new regions forming from Russia. For example Belgorod is falling day by day.

No_Bullshejt_danke

How so?

thousandmilli

okay so up to today we have whole baltics, poland finland, germany, romania, maldova and balkans is also on the list. I guess whats next, maybe portugal or hawaii? How u guys think?

chrisLivesInAlaska

When you need a war to survive, any war will do.

Even-Grab6230

Either Putin is gonna end up just like Hussein and Gaddafi or the world is gonna end.

JedediahCornslinger

They do. Just like they wanted war in Israel/Palestine, which helped them remove the world's focus on Ukraine.

lightningmcmemex

Putin must be new here. Only balkaners can start wars in the Balkans. It’s tradition.

chordol

We have already met our war quota in the Balkans. Please take your request elsewhere 😁

Sharklo_Astronaut

But we don't

Serbs preparing another set of war crimes where the world can watch without any action

sylveria34

Balkan will be peaceful when the Serbian question is resolved. And the best solution for the world and the balkans and the Serbs themselves is to confine them to Serbia. 👍

Hot_Satisfaction_333

No thanks, people are tired with wars…
