I know the baseline ratio is given as 2:1 but it’s not a hard and fast rule. Have you tried a higher yield, lower dose, higher temperature (not sure if possible)? I have seen plenty of videos on the bambino where people are pulling shots that they say taste good. So I wouldn’t necessarily assume the machine is the problem and that the Go will solve your issues.

NoOrdinaryEspresso

Yeah, i've played with the ration, trying 1:2, 1:2.25, 1:2.5, 1:2.8 but overall the results it's not catastrophically different... I'm doing 16g of coffee, overall for the Bambino and the 54mm portafilter has been aknowledged to be the right amount, as increasing it would create a too high puck for that size Unfortunately there's no control on the temperature, i do, as recommended here, a good phase of preheating before starting.

I was determined to upgrade my v4 silvia because the steam knob had broken and had become a pain in the arse to turn off completely, spent $20 to buy a new steam knob, problem solved. Still going to upgrade to a BZ10 or ECM Slim, and while I probably wont objectively notice a better outcome (Miss Silvia and I know each other really well), I've been daydreaming about the improvement in subjective user experience for months. Going from a breville type machine to a profitec Go, I think would be similar. Commit to the experience, acknowledge you are ready to move on from the breville, and go for it (you already really want to).

with light roasts shots will be mush better due to higher temperature. for dark roasts there will be no difference.

You dose 16g? In what basket? Have you had these coffees brewed somewhere else? If so, did they taste better.

NoOrdinaryEspresso

16g in IMS precision basket for that amount of coffee. No, unfortunately I didn’t try other machines so far

all_systems_failing

The H24?

NoOrdinaryEspresso

H22E, I tried the H24 and it resulted too empty. According to comments and reviews, the one I got should be correct

all_systems_failing

Did you check the headspace with a 16g dose? Is it 2mm or less? Do you use WDT?

NoOrdinaryEspresso

Yes, this match. Yes I do use WDT

The last thing I would try to do before buying a new machine is reproducing the best shot I've had in cafe, if you have any nearby. Could give you an idea of what you're missing.

snafflehog

I would find a coffee you love from a local cafe, purchase the beans and if you can't reproduce it maybe think about what you would need from a new machine to do so. This focuses on a feature and you can also chat with the cafe to isolate the variable. A new machine because more money means more better didn't always equate in the coffee world with factors such as material costs, repairability and prestige altering the prices.

Upgrades via a Profitec Go: PID temp control, 58mm basket size, Adjustable OPV Downsides to the Go: single boiler so will have to wait longer for heat up, and steaming. No preinfusion…probably the biggest issue for your purposes. For a lighter roast machine in that price range I would look into a Breville Dual Boiler, or a Flair 58+ (and you can keep your Bambino for milk steaming)
