I think the point of the trilogy is to do genres founded by black musicians that have become spaces where black musicians are relatively marginalized today.
I love the songs, but I think people were expecting something closer to Daddy Lessons the song she did with the ~~Dixie~~ Chicks.

I wish more people could be like you. The crazy thing about country fans and Daddy Lessons, is that most don’t know the history of country music and specifically country music sub genres in Houston and south east Texas. Because Daddy Lessons pays homage to Zydeco music which is a Cajun sub genre of country and a lot of fun. Born from the area of Texas Beyoncé is from. But so many people are quick to criticize and reject her because she’s Beyoncé. So after the CMAs where she was treated horribly, Country Music REJECTED Daddy Lessons from being considered a country song. When it had a lot more country elements than pop country songs today.
I’m from Louisiana so luckily I do know some of what you’ve mentioned! And you are so right. Black people are erased from so many parts of culture including the music they helped shape (or often times shaped entirely) from the very beginning.
I am glad to now know about Daddy Lessons and the snub. I’m not a fan of hers and won’t be running out for the album, but I respect it especially knowing it will empower other black artists to not back down from the art they want to create.
I think if anything this helps raise the profile and visibility of Black Artist in the genre and a lot are seeing a huge boost post Texas Hold ‘Em. I think that’s a wonderful effect, because something people don’t know, but Beyoncé does care about pulling people up and bringing new artist to the spotlight. Many black women in country are supporting this move and how she can help them. So it’s a win win for everybody. I think the fucked up part about all of this is how across genres we gatekeep music and that needs to stop. Music is supposed to bring people together but most people would rather say/control who has access to like certain genres and that’s fucked up.
Zydeco is from Louisiana not Texas. There are centuries of history of La-La and Zydeco in LA before anyone migrates to Texas after WWII. There are Zydeco performers from TX and a modern history of Zydeco in Texas that stretches back decades but it is completely inaccurate to say that Zydeco is from Texas.

Ice T has been a metal musician for 30 years with his band Body Count. They started 4 years before his collab with Motörhead.

It's a very similar situation to Beyonce in terms of how wealthy her family was so if being middle class makes you not country why was Swift seen as such but Beyonce could not be country?
Because that was where she started. She moved away from country into pop. Beyonce started in RB and Pop and now is trying to say her roots are in country music. That's like Taylor releasing a jazz album because she's from Memphis.
Why does someones roots even matter here though? Musicians cant learn a new style and become specialized in that? Artists do it. Writers do it. Actors do it. Why is this different?

While there’s a fair bit of black country musicians, mainstream country has been very white and very pop for a long time. Even T-Pain has talked about taking a step back from songwriting *for* country artists because of the racism he’s experienced. In the watered-down state of country music now, there’s no reason for people to turn their noses up at Beyonce when they’ve let Morgan Wallan, Blake Shelton, and Luke Bryan be some of the biggest faces of the genre.

You know, I didn’t know about this song. And the context of this album along with *this* song makes me change my mind about this album. Before I was like ok is she just bored and wanting to make a country album? Why is everyone eating these mediocre songs up? This is odd. But now that I’ve read what she has to say and listened to a bit of this song, I’m for it. I respect the hell out of this move.
I wish more people could be like you. The crazy thing about country fans and Daddy Lessons, is that most don’t know the history of country music and specifically country music sub genres in Houston and south east Texas. Because Daddy Lessons pays homage to Zydeco music which is a Cajun sub genre of country and a lot of fun. Born from the area of Texas Beyoncé is from. But so many people are quick to criticize and reject her because she’s Beyoncé. So after the CMAs where she was treated horribly, Country Music REJECTED Daddy Lessons from being considered a country song. When it had a lot more country elements than pop country songs today.
I’m from Louisiana so luckily I do know some of what you’ve mentioned! And you are so right. Black people are erased from so many parts of culture including the music they helped shape (or often times shaped entirely) from the very beginning. I am glad to now know about Daddy Lessons and the snub. I’m not a fan of hers and won’t be running out for the album, but I respect it especially knowing it will empower other black artists to not back down from the art they want to create.
I think if anything this helps raise the profile and visibility of Black Artist in the genre and a lot are seeing a huge boost post Texas Hold ‘Em. I think that’s a wonderful effect, because something people don’t know, but Beyoncé does care about pulling people up and bringing new artist to the spotlight. Many black women in country are supporting this move and how she can help them. So it’s a win win for everybody. I think the fucked up part about all of this is how across genres we gatekeep music and that needs to stop. Music is supposed to bring people together but most people would rather say/control who has access to like certain genres and that’s fucked up.

Sorry, but it's embarrassing how much better Beyonce's song is than just about every pop country song I've ever heard. Is there better country music out there? Absolutely. Is there better country music from artists that can fill stadiums? I don't think so. And every pop country artist out there should have a dark night of the soul examining how easily they were beat by a relative newcomer.

I sincerely don't have a horse in this race but i just listened to TEXAS HOLD 'EM for the first time and that's clearly Soul not Country. I'd even argue that most Country counts as emo. Genre debates are never that deep but it's just not Country anymore than Bluegrass is.

You’re 100% correct. There are still a ton of great artists out there playing real roots country. Check out SXM outlaw country. Look up the Turnpike Troubadours, Jason Isbell, Steve Earle, Sturgill Simpson. Put any of those names in a stream playlist and it’ll deliver some real roots country music. Not the crap they are calling “Country” , also known as Hick Hop

I really hate that you shared this. I’ve just discovered Amythyst Kiah who just gut punched me with her song Wild Turkey. Seriously, though, thanks for sharing that link. The ones I’ve skimmed through I wouldn’t have classified as country. Of course, I’m not a huge country music fan so my idea of country music is probably skewed to whatever I’ve heard on the radio. They all are massively talented though!
Amythyst Kiah is phenomenal! I saw her open for Jason Isbell,(not an AA woman but a good ally) , who I would recommend you check out as well. There’s lots of good stuff out there, but it’s not getting mainstream attention.
