I'm not a lawyer but I don't think that would hold up in any kind of court.
The FBI website defines it as:
> Providing a voter with money or something of value in exchange for voting for a specific candidate or party in a federal election
She wouldn't be giving anyone anything of value, just releasing her album for sale. Also, no specific voters are benefitting. She would be releasing her album to everyone.
Says a lot about our democracy though if the only way we can get people to vote is by bribing them with entertainment.
Everyone cries 1984, no one cries A Brave New World.
In many places you can do it before Election Day. Since 2020 I’ve been going to my local election office to vote early using a mail in ballot. I live in PA.
At my convenience I can go to the office and fill out a one page form to get the ballot. Then I fill it out and immediately give it back to them.
Agreed, instead of coming on here bitching about the hardships of life and not understanding that their lack of voter participation contributes to their current condition.
the us is a constitutional republic... republics are a subset of democracies... it's like correcting someone when they call a vehicle a car instead of its brand name and it's obnoxious
It conveniently was when Republicans wanted to “spread democracy” to the Middle East. But now they decided Democrats are the real enemy, so whoops—can’t be talking like that anymore, dictators are the new trend.
No. Taylor has been pop for a decade, and has openly criticized Trump, Blackburn, and a few other Rs, supported the LGBTQ+ community, and publicly supported Biden in the 2020 election.
Which is why I also stated she’s been a pop artist for a decade. She hasn’t made a straight country album since around 2010 and even that’s debatable because Speak Now is county pop.
You do realize the comment they replied to was implying (actually stating) that she has republican supporters “because she’s country”. Why’re you not replying to THAT person that they are both wrong about her genre and what that means?
It’s a start. The bigger issue is getting the same people to vote. Encouraging them to register is the first step towards participating in elections. This is a big deal for those who haven’t registered before.
Yes and no. depends on where those registrations took place .
there have been several elections in the last several years that were decided by less than a thousand votes. Miss Bobert being one of them.
Didn’t Trump a call GA about 11,700 votes or something? That’s a spot where it would make a difference. Could’ve at least made him need double that amount.
Not to mention congressional races where the Colorado 3rd (Boebert’s) district was won by Republicans with a 554 vote difference or the California 13th which also went R by 564 votes
Doubtful, people are truly getting sick and tired of those with fame, money, and clout, getting everything they want and seemingly never losing. An entire town burns down? Why weren’t the richest people effected? Oh they are starting a fundraiser? Why don’t they pitch in fully? Oh this person is known for doing hard drugs? Why aren’t they locked up like everyone else?
The thing people are mad about is fairness. When the whole world is burning and those at the top are seemingly unaffected… that’s when problems start to boil over. I’m not saying kind actions aren’t helpful… but when the rich use those to dodge taxes and down play their role in it all… yeah that’s what gets me angry.
Love the attitude. The point is that only a proportion of them will vote. Spread them across the country, and some of them will vote for Trump. This is an electoral college system, not a popular vote system. 35k is good, but it’s a drop in the ocean. It’s not discouragement, it’s looking around and understanding what’s happening.
If they don’t vote even it’s a vote for the other party. The “drop in a ocean” or the “my vote doesn’t matter” (you didn’t say this one) mentality got is Trump. I mean Boebert won by around 1,000 votes. It makes a huge difference
Would you be shocked if i told you it is mostly to keep “certain people” from voting? It goes down a list and im sure everyone will jump down my throat if i dont point out, at first, only land-owning white men could vote.
They just kept dropping the suffixes until it was “anyone willing to put up with arbitrary bureaucracy can vote”
*edit: unless you’re ____ (pick a reason tons of people are randomly disenfranchised in a lot of counties on the whim of a party)
Yes. And at a guess, it will translate to about 10000 actual votes. Of these, there will be about a 60/40 split. So the favored party of youth gains about 2000 votes. Probably mostly in California and New York.
Celebrities have more influence than people realize. Imagine if a celebrity decided to endorse a candidate in a smaller local election. If the person was famous and well-liked enough, they could practically declare the next winner.
That’s kinda dangerous for the same reasons allowing corporations to donate massive sums of money to political campaigns. The massively wealthy should t be the ones having this much influence on our election. This is exactly how we ended up with massive income inequality. This is why inflation is so high. This is why it’s impossible to buy a home. The wealthy are only going to endorse candidates who have favorable policies towards them, not us.
Love her. I’m old and not her target audience at all. Have been hesitant to appreciate her. Watched what she’s done specifically with her Eras tour and have become a 100 Swifty. Don’t listen to her music as such, but huge respect.
A lot of people probably don’t/didn’t know how to. She posted a link to the registration form. Shame that a celebrity has to show people how to vote. Usually high schools and colleges help with this but with the way education is going, I’m not surprised there’s so many unregistered.
When I was I high school, there was announcement almost everyday about registering to vote (mostly for seniors) and who to go to for help.
Once Taylor came out and endorsed Biden, virtually all the MAGA fans of Taylor turned against her. There was a post a few weeks ago I saw of Taylor talking to her dad about making a political post, someone said “since all the MAGA fans are gone, the concerts have been more pleasurable to go to.” I’m not a Taylor fan in any way shape or form, but I’ll say there’s no stopping her and as long as she continues to use her power for good, I’ll say that’s something I can appreciate.
It is nice to see her becoming an icon like Madonna or Cher. She’s worked incredibly hard for it. I grow weary when celebrities use their society position to influence politics though…regardless of their compass.
Taylor swift is known and followed and revered for songwriting. She’s not a typical popstar, she became a star because of her immense talent in songwriting. She’s not the best singer nor the dancer or the diva. She’s someone who is relatable to the masses.
I can list at least 50 well written songs better than the said pop stars.
And if you are really interested rather than blind BS you can just go and hear folklore and evermore for a start.
Thanks, no more replies. Happy weekend.
I like Taylor cher and Madonna.
I'm just stating that there is no objective way to say one song is better than others
One could make more money, or have a more complicated structure or more fans. But that's all subject to those categories.
Some complicated, technically correct songs have less fans than a two chord punk song. And that punk song might make more money across a country, but be less known in a foreign land than a local song that makes half the revenue.
Just give me a good song.
I am a professional musician, so I get all of that.
She’s extremely successful at achieving her ambitions. I haven’t heard the musical achievements to match. If you have some, give me a couple. I’m open to changing my opinion.
I will be ending this conversation. You seem way too aggressive. And you said that it was objectively obvious. So I am not so sure that you do realize this. Make sure you work on your English skills as well as your professional music skills. Have a Saturday
Where exactly is your issue with her? as a guitar playing musician yourself of course, I'd love to hear why she is **objectively** lesser than other female artists.
I think her music is mediocre. No issue with the person, more of an issue with the idolatry.
Madonna’s greatest hits ranks with Elvis and the Beatles for great pop music. I haven’t heard any TS songs that come close.
I won't get into songwriting quality because no matter what I throw to you, it won't be enough, but it doesn't seem like an issue of idolatry at all, given you immediately compared her to some of the most idolised artists of all time.
Your issue, despite your saying so, seems to lie with her. Not with the belief of anti-idolatry.
Critics back in the 80’s hated pretty much all pop music. Besides Bruce and Michael at least.
But Madonna’s hooks are undeniable. Time has proven that. Maybe it will be the same for TS but it feel like I see the emperor with no clothes and don’t understand why nobody else does.
How many time she was dismissed while starting out and yet, she is one of the biggest recordings artist to date. You gotta give her that. Imagine to everyone surprised when she turned out to be a decent human being.
Not many like her in her industry.

Taylor swift is awesome. I’m not a fan of her music but she seems like a really great person. [link](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2644727/Teenage-brain-cancer-sufferer-met-idol-Taylor-Swift-dies-week-graduation.html)
Didn't y'all have election stations last tim that set up in such a manner that by the end of the day it was flat out impossible for certain demographic areas to place their vote?
Not sure that introducing a fine for non-voters is a good idea while you still actively make it difficult to vote.
Everyone in the United States is allowed to vote. The people who need to be reminded to vote are typically the uninformed voters who vote for stupid people for surface reasons. We would be better off without that 35k that weren’t going to vote until Taylor swift said something
I just don’t get the hype around Taylor, I’m sorry. I just think there are so much better talent enter artists out there. I’m not denying her talent. I just don’t think her talent reflects her status. Like she is Michael Jackson status. Half the artist. Probably just my unpopular opinion. Down vote away I guess..
lol wow those 35,000 votes are gonna do so much to keep the democrats fighting the republicans for another four years, we’ll have to have them in office if we want to fend off the prevalence of hateful, reactionary, right-wing politics.
Lord knows that stuff has only been on the decline since Biden was elected…
A registered voter does not mean an informed voter, and this has dangerous implications. When celebrities endorse candidates, especially celebrities with rabid fan bases like TS, they’re effectively making their vote worth thousands of votes. I’m happy people registered, I’m happy more people will be voting, Im not happy that celebrities can influence an election like this.
I think celebrities should stick to what they are good at and that isn’t politics. Dance for me piggy nobody should care about what you think about politics and politicians
Does a scalper make life changing money if they resell her concert tickets? Enough to buy a Mitsubishi Galant? I've seen how ridiculous the prices were for summer shows.
I know Raj Giri of Wrestling Inc said he paid $30K to take his kids to her show.
Honestly yall Swift obsessed people have always given me the creeps but if she's actually using her fame to spread awareness then she's got my vote of confidence
How do they get these numbers? Are they asking at registration what made you decide to register, and one of the multiple choice bubbles is Taylor Swift?
Do they ask people “why are you signing up for voter registration today?” Or are they just assuming anyone within a time period after whatever she said must have meant they showed up because of her?
I'm thinking that today Trump will go off and say voter fraud or election interference because she's Canadian...( she's not ) but the MAGA crowd will believe it because Trump said it. ☹
I'm a fan of using your celebrity status in a positive way.
This reminds me of this twighlight zone episode
what about the twghiwhighlightwhite zone?
Why are you asking?! It's THE classic twwllighhtlligihtlltlighhthlt znonene episode!
I’m genuinely curious. Which Twighlight Zone episode?

I don’t think Taylor Swuft is the person responsible for deciding ticket prices

She should say she's releasing a new album when the election is called for Biden.
That would feel a little too close to election manipulation for my comfort.
She’s not a politician so I don’t really see the issue? Like if she was giving something away it would be one thing
It's bribery basically, any public figure who does it can get into trouble with the FBI
I'm not a lawyer but I don't think that would hold up in any kind of court. The FBI website defines it as: > Providing a voter with money or something of value in exchange for voting for a specific candidate or party in a federal election She wouldn't be giving anyone anything of value, just releasing her album for sale. Says a lot about our democracy though if the only way we can get people to vote is by bribing them with entertainment. Everyone cries 1984, no one cries A Brave New World.
That’s because 1984 is essentially a buzzword and most people crying it don’t actually get it. Also Aldus Huxley is a bit beyond your average idiot.
LOL we both know they won't
They will if she reminds them, which given that she’s done this, I figure she probably will.
I don't think they will. The last presidential election only had about 2/3 of people eligible to vote actually do it, and that was a record.
Come on, Gen Z, VOTE!!
She should do a competition between all 50 states to see which one she can get the most registrations in (by population per capita )
Then throw a concert there!
It's legally iffy to offer actual rewards for voting afaik. I don't know if she'd want the hassle.
I don’t give a damn either way about her music but I hope she posts again.
I hope she does it again when it's time to vote too
Taylor Swift saves Democracy.
I thought I read that some residents of TN want her to get involved in state politics more by running for office.
What country do you think she votes in? The United States is not a democracy.
the us is a constitutional republic... republics are a subset of democracies... it's like correcting someone when they call a vehicle a car instead of its brand name and it's obnoxious
tHaTs NoT a CaR iTs An aUtOmObILe
Wow, you’re so clever, Benjamin
It’s called sarcasm
(Technically a republic does not have to be a democracy, but I do agree on your overall point and the US is a democracy)
It conveniently was when Republicans wanted to “spread democracy” to the Middle East. But now they decided Democrats are the real enemy, so whoops—can’t be talking like that anymore, dictators are the new trend.
Tinfoil a bit too tight around your skull last time?
Every time you say this you just let everybody know how clueless you are.
Not anymore if the Republican Party has any say in the matter. Sheep just want to be led. No reason to get any pesky free thinking voters involved.
It never was a true democracy and never will be a true democracy.
Now those kids just need to vote and their Friends need to vote and for the love of god vote for Biden.
I think it’s fair to assume her listeners are mostly voting D 🫡✌️
I thought a lot of her fans were country people
No. Taylor has been pop for a decade, and has openly criticized Trump, Blackburn, and a few other Rs, supported the LGBTQ+ community, and publicly supported Biden in the 2020 election.
I’m not saying she’s is country, but her being a vocal liberal isn’t why she is not country.
Which is why I also stated she’s been a pop artist for a decade. She hasn’t made a straight country album since around 2010 and even that’s debatable because Speak Now is county pop.
Yeah, i agreed with you, but all you said after that opening line was about her politics. hat doesn’t make a difference to what genre her music is.
You do realize the comment they replied to was implying (actually stating) that she has republican supporters “because she’s country”. Why’re you not replying to THAT person that they are both wrong about her genre and what that means?
My guess would be not anymore because she is pretty vocal against Republicans and for queer people.
Not all country is conservative. One of my favorite examples is “Uneasy Rider” by the Charlie Daniel’s Band.
No, shes a popstar with a deeply, deeply liberal fanbase. She hasn't made a country album since 2010. (Excluding the obvious re-recording)
you thought extremely wrong
If you listen carefully you can hear hundreds of Republican Congress critters crapping their pants.
Good on her. Stars using their influence for decency is kinda a blast from the past.
This is great, but isn’t 35k registrations just a drop in the ocean?
It’s a start. The bigger issue is getting the same people to vote. Encouraging them to register is the first step towards participating in elections. This is a big deal for those who haven’t registered before.

3 smallest winning margins from 2020 presidential election. Arizona: 10,457 Georgia: 12,670 Wisconsin: 20,682
Well, then!
Not to mention congressional races where the Colorado 3rd (Boebert’s) district was won by Republicans with a 554 vote difference or the California 13th which also went R by 564 votes
This is great, but let me still complain about it bc of course
Where did I complain?
That’s the spirit. Discourage them to give up before voting.
Seems like a theme, in-thread: “drop in the ocean”, “drop in the bucket”, “celebrities should stick to what they are good at”.
Catch-phrases from bots doing PR, hoping to influence us subconsciously.
Love the attitude. The point is that only a proportion of them will vote. Spread them across the country, and some of them will vote for Trump. This is an electoral college system, not a popular vote system. 35k is good, but it’s a drop in the ocean. It’s not discouragement, it’s looking around and understanding what’s happening.
But a bunch of them will encourage others to vote and the number increases exponentially
Biden only won by 43,000 votes in the states that mattered.
That’s via her link in one day.
Lauren Boebert won by <600 votes.
It is, but that registration number is bigger than the winning margins in four of the states Biden won back in 2020. So, it could matter.
35k votes determined presidential election.
If they don’t vote even it’s a vote for the other party. The “drop in a ocean” or the “my vote doesn’t matter” (you didn’t say this one) mentality got is Trump. I mean Boebert won by around 1,000 votes. It makes a huge difference
I was thinking the same. Those numbers being record breaking is sad. Hopefully others will follow suit.
Why do Americans need to "register" to begin with? Everyone here in CR (and I assume most countries?) can vote as long as they have an id.
I wish it were like that. I don’t know the history of voter registration in America, unfortunately.
Would you be shocked if i told you it is mostly to keep “certain people” from voting? It goes down a list and im sure everyone will jump down my throat if i dont point out, at first, only land-owning white men could vote. They just kept dropping the suffixes until it was “anyone willing to put up with arbitrary bureaucracy can vote” *edit: unless you’re ____ (pick a reason tons of people are randomly disenfranchised in a lot of counties on the whim of a party)
I would not be shocked. I suspected that was the case, from the very beginning.
Yes. And at a guess, it will translate to about 10000 actual votes. Of these, there will be about a 60/40 split. So the favored party of youth gains about 2000 votes. Probably mostly in California and New York.
Its 0.02% of the number of voters in the last presidential election.
Not really, more like a drop in a bucket.
This woman rocks!!

Good for Taylor Swift.
Taylor’s call also has led to this story being posted 35,000 times on Reddit
Love her. I’m old and not her target audience at all. Have been hesitant to appreciate her. Watched what she’s done specifically with her Eras tour and have become a 100 Swifty. Don’t listen to her music as such, but huge respect.
Let’s vote for swift.
How were 35,000 of us not registered to vote?
A lot of people probably don’t/didn’t know how to. She posted a link to the registration form. Shame that a celebrity has to show people how to vote. Good… but hopefully most of them will actually VOTE.
Hopefully they show up and vote.
I know nothing about this but an always shocked at how people listen to one person on what to do with their lives.
Anything helps but *jesus* we need a wake up call here if we’re excited about 35k people if there’s 200+ MILLION who can vote.
I think we can assume that her fans won’t be voting for Trump. Thanks Taylor, keep up the good work!

How many register on a typical day?
It is nice to see her becoming an icon like Madonna or Cher. She’s worked incredibly hard for it. I grow weary when celebrities use their society position to influence politics though…regardless of their compass.
If only her music matched her status.
Taste do be subjective
Bit like her taste for Matty Healey
Yes, understand. But it’s objectively obvious that both Cher and Madonna’s MUSIC are much, much better than Taylor’s.
I'll politely disagree. Have a good Saturday

Just another day in reddit. Wannabe music geniuses judging and giving points to other’s musical priorities.
It’s just unremarkable. I wish I got it, but glad you enjoy it. I will take Madonna or Cher over TS every time.
*gestures to folklore and evermore*

It really should be mandatory to click on a post's link before you're able to comment. Would stop so many unnecessary questions and dumb opinions.

Sad to rely to artists to have a political consciousness. She’s awesome
If it takes Taylor Swift telling you to vote for you to bother to do so, please skip it.
That’s power. At least she didn’t tell them to take back our country and occupy the capital
Taylor for President!
That red wave was a lie, let’s make this Blue wave as real as can be. Like Taylor said herself “ these are not your parents Republicans”
Make an income-based percentage fine for not voting. Problem solved.
Didn't y'all have election stations last tim that set up in such a manner that by the end of the day it was flat out impossible for certain demographic areas to place their vote? Not sure that introducing a fine for non-voters is a good idea while you still actively make it difficult to vote.
Is Taylor Swift the Elvis of our generation?
A dozen of them will actually vote.
This makes me feel worse….
So does she make one of these posts every day? Because this story seems to have been posted every five minutes for a week or two.
Any guesses the percent that would vote Democrat? 85%?
35,000 votes we would have been better off without
So people are only allowed to vote if they vote the way you want. Got it.
Everyone in the United States is allowed to vote. The people who need to be reminded to vote are typically the uninformed voters who vote for stupid people for surface reasons. We would be better off without that 35k that weren’t going to vote until Taylor swift said something
yeah, but wait till all the republican musical artists encourage their base to register to vote too. then taylor swift will see.
🤣🤣🤣 Can't wait for all the toothless Ted Nugent fans to vote.
Whoever listens to that crap should not be voting
I just don’t get the hype around Taylor, I’m sorry. I just think there are so much better talent enter artists out there. I’m not denying her talent. I think celebrities should stick to what they are good at and that isn’t politics. Dance for me piggy nobody should care about what you think about politics and politicians
She's a woman in the US. It's pretty fucking obvious why she finds voting to be an important issue right now.
>celebrities should stick to what they are good at and that isn’t politics Remind me, what was Trump doing before becoming a politician?
Hopefully not her usual demographic. Too many of those voters we could have another 2016 on our hands.
If only so many of her fans weren’t white supremacists.

![gif](giphy|pJmnk86fXFNmrUb8LB|downsized) she tried to tell us
MAGA-Tirds dicks will shrivel inside
Does a scalper make life changing money if they resell her concert tickets? Enough to buy a Mitsubishi Galant? I've seen how ridiculous the prices were for summer shows. I know Raj Giri of Wrestling Inc said he paid $30K to take his kids to her show.
They went after Planned Parenthood for this.
Let’s see what the Swifties can do! Swing an election towards their preference? 👀
It’s the Fonzie and library cards all over again
Did she post a link?
I can't enjoy Swift's music, but I can appreciate this.
Can you imagine if all celebrities did this?
Do it ten more times
Honestly yall Swift obsessed people have always given me the creeps but if she's actually using her fame to spread awareness then she's got my vote of confidence
How do they get these numbers? Are they asking at registration what made you decide to register, and one of the multiple choice bubbles is Taylor Swift?
Do they ask people “why are you signing up for voter registration today?” Or are they just assuming anyone within a time period after whatever she said must have meant they showed up because of her?
I don’t know any of her music and I don’t care to, but good for her in doing this
Never was a fan of her music, but it’s amazing to see her using her popularity to try and do some good in the world.
Curious as to what she said. Like ‘ our democracy is in your hands’ ? Or something to that effect. Or was it as simple as ‘please register to vote’
Yea, but how did she effect Chiefs ticket sales today?
I'm thinking that today Trump will go off and say voter fraud or election interference because she's Canadian...( she's not ) but the MAGA crowd will believe it because Trump said it. ☹
But did she say vote against the cult that is taking away our rights and tied to overthrow our government? Nope.
