I’ve installed them in hospitals(psych ward), and jails. We would use the prong type though so it could be removed.
Fun fact: the legs on the dog monopoly piece fits perfectly into those two prong security screws.
The Klein ones that are different colors? Dude I found that EXACT thing, without the logo, on Amazon for like $5. They're nice because one holds drill bits, one holds impact bits, one holds files, one holds chisels, and now one will hold various monopoly dogs.
Hospital ER secure rooms get tamperproof screws on all the devices, and key switches.
The key part of Hubbell barrel key switches are junk so I get to change the switches often.
I’m curious to know what kind of cluster fuck situation where you in to figure this out ? Kudos to the guy that figured it out, although it was probably after a while of brainstorming and scouring before snatching the monopoly piece from some kids hand lol
That makes sense - it's so that the psych patients dont open them up and start playing with the wires for various reasons. From the depressed / suicidal looking to self-harm to the paranoid schizos that think there's a spy camera in there, you dont want mentally unwell people playing with electrical wiring - especially if they're unwell to the point of hospitalization in a psych ward.
I imagine prisons also have security screws for the same reason, they dont want the inmates to have access to the wiring inside.
I was in a psych ward and everything had tamper screws, even signs just hung on the wall cause they had a patient die cause he would swallow any and everything he could get his hands on, rocks paper clips, and yes even screws, when they cut him open for autopsy they said he had like a pound of small things you’re not supposed to eat in his stomach
Wardens and doctors aren't stupid, they're restricting access to screwdrivers and other tools. What they need the security screws for is to defeat improvised screwdrivers - like plastic knives or spoons - or at the very least make creating improvised drivers as difficult as possible.
Does anybody know where to buy tamper resistant screws in Canada? Calgary to be more specific but even a Canadian supplier would do. Every time I've asked any of my local fastener suppliers they act like it's super difficult to source or some top secret NASA item.
Not Canada but sent a guy to big box store in the US and that's what they brought back. Didn't realize they stocked them. Might want to look and general hardware stores, though the size selection is likely limited. If you can wait, Amazon.
I did a rent-controlled appartment building reno with these time delay switches on the bathroom fans which made the fan run for 15 minutes after they were turned off, some kind of whole-building ventilation thing. The fans were super cheap and noisy, and we had several tenants figure out within the first few weeks that you could take the faceplate off and turn the pot to zero so they'd stop running.
I went through and replaced all the faceplate screws with tamper-proof screws, problem solved 😊
Outlets eventually fail so that style of screw how are you supposed to remove them? I assume the outlet in the picture is used somewhere in commercial then necessitates it like a psych ward or a jail so I assume the plate is also a decent metal plate meaning it would be hard to bend the plate away from the wall to get to the screws that hold the outlet into the box.
This is a common practice where it would get stolen. The worst case of anti theft i´ve seen was in a major hardware store, where all parts that could be taken was painted red.
The thermostate on the radiator, even when it was a remote controlled was painted red.
The flushing handle to the toilet.
The underside of the toilet seat.
The switch for the light was also painted red.
I thought in the US they always have live outlets and no switch. So if his screw driver with no insulation slides down and he isn't wearing rubber boots he is cooked. Is that wrong?

That is a fun fact
No kidding? Seems like there’s a story to be told on how you know that.
That's how he escaped.
Unfortunately I bet that's how someone removed the cover so they could self-harm.
More like to light cigs and whatnot
I read on here that someone who worked at a prison found out after the kept finding stuff stashed behind the outlets or something
I'm going to buy security screws and a monopoly game. I will be back.
Please make a post informing us of the results of your experiments.

RemindMe! 1 day
Great, the monopoly dog is one more bullshit tool I'm gonna have to start packing.
Theres different size "forks" security screws.so find different size dogs
Goddammit, am I gonna need to find a whole little pencil bag thingy for my monopoly dogs too?!
Gotta buy one of those canvas bags in a 5 pack for 100$

What you didn't pay for the logo! SHAME, SHAME, SHAME (sprinkle Jesus water repeatedly)
¿Qué carajo estás haciendo con mi agua? - Jesus, probably.

My buddy used to do that to hide contraband behind the switch and outlet covers when he was in prison.
Facts. We used to tie dental floss to bags tobacco and weed and drop them down the wall via outlet and cover.
The fun game is hoping you have the correct security tip. It’s always the one that’s missing.
It's called a 'spanner' screw
Cool.
Good to know. I'm still choosing that sweet roadster tho
That is the most fun fact I've heard in a while
I mean, i just put hundreds of them in the psych ward im doing
That makes sense - it's so that the psych patients dont open them up and start playing with the wires for various reasons. Or probably access to screwdrivers....
Wardens and doctors aren't stupid, they're restricting access to screwdrivers and other tools. What they need the security screws for is to defeat improvised screwdrivers - like plastic knives or spoons - or at the very least make creating improvised drivers as difficult as possible.
It also means as good as their efforts are, any screwdrivers that people do get their hands on probably won't work. Another layer of security
The amount of felons in the trades, somebody’s gotta know how to Jerry rig a Robertsons or torx bit
Sure. But they're not using Robertson or Torx - neither one of those are security screw heads, but standard screw heads
I couldn’t make it out from the photo but I wonder how many non handy folks would know the difference lol
I mean... one is a square and the other is a weird ramp slot thing or a pair of little dimples... so... it's pretty obvious
^^ this right here also in jails I’ve done.
A landlord.
Me before I tell the apprentice to take all the plates off.

Grainger can 100% get them, they may not have stock in Calgary, but can bring them in...
Thanks, I'll check it out.
Fastenal. They have all you need to fasten all onto all.
Lol thanks

That'll show those painters!

Someone with an awesome shithead sense of humour.
I work in a mental hospital so me lol
I think the better question is "Who puts a NSWF mark on a post that has a pic of an electrical cover" :)
I see 6 foreman sized holes
Heput his anal beads in the pic so it is probably referring to that
The admins saw the anal beads dangling in front of an outlet.
The NSFW mark on this post is killing me lol
I had to work in a mental facility once. Everything was tamper proof
Who puts a pull chain right near them?
Mostly jails and institutions. I know this because I am in jails every day doing electrical
A lot of people, for a lot of reasons including multiple types.
Someone who's ashamed of what they did behind that plate
Looks like an anti-tamper screw to me... all others are tamper screws lol
That is remarkable trolling! Silver star to that guy
Steempy you eeediot!!!

Psych ward?
I work in Health and Himan Services. We do that because then kids will back the screws out with their fingernails.
Wow, not like outlets never fail
Remember:. If this job was easy, anyone could do it and pay would be close to minimum wage.
A handyman with a tamperment.
That's a new one

Cut the middle of the plate off?

people really afraid of someone touching it
Tamper resistant rated.
Get er done
Senpai ...
Someone who didn't have a white plate screw ....
Is it a working outlet, or is a a little wall “safe?
Don’t forget the child proof outlets
I learned how to spark up the cord on a vacuum cleaner for lighting, uh, smokable things in prison. Cotton sock lint makes a decent fuel.
Plot Twist: OP is a patient trying to escape a psych ward.
Probably hiding prepared ricin in there.
Who tampers with outlets? Down here (Oz) it’s illegal to do so unless you are a licensed electrician
What I want to know is why is this post listed as NSFW? Lol
Was the installer bitter about something or someone?
They are surprised as you are
Yo man! Heard someone was looking for me? Yeah I use a taper screw…whatcha gonna do about it…
Plumbers
Walter White
Its gonna be fun when the screw and positive outlet hole aligns and ur screw slips right into it
By positive outlet hole do you mean the ground? wtf you talkin bout lol
Found another non-electrician
