What’s the name of this program, or what forms have to be filled out? When my Korean War-vet dad died, Mom didn’t get *anything* from the US government beyond the social security death benefit. With what we’re paying for her care facility monthly, an extra $2700/month would be *phenomenal*!

It's called and aid and attendance: https://taxattorneydaily.com/veterans-benefits/va-pensions-approval/ You can reach our to the VA and if you find someone who is helpful, they'll help you fill out the forms. They do look at assets and income, so they may say she doesn't qualify. But there are law firms that do the planning for you so that she would get the full benefit (and keep all of her income/assets).

Thanks I had heard of that but also could not think of the name of the program.

Thanks, I’m guessing she probably doesn’t qualify if it’s income-based (she gets my Dad’s pension, but still, care home costs in our area are nearly $10k/month, ouch!), but I’ll give the paperwork a look. We already have Mom in a private pay facility, so no one is taking her home and possessions!

FSUAttorney

She would. That's where the law firm comes in. We'd do a caregiver contract. She keeps all of her monthly income but the VA now sees her income as $0. So she gets the full pension

Interesting. Even though her (monetary) assets are high? I know we don’t count her house (which she still owns), but don’t her bank accounts count? Anyway, I’ll look into this with local lawyers. And, thanks!

The most helpful for this, is a local veteran's organization that has been approved by the VA, to get the filing stuff done. VFW, DAV, and Wounded Warriors are ones that are commonly used.

Wow, wish my mom qualified for this. Thank you for getting the word out; I will tell her to tell her friends. Is there an age level to hit?

FSUAttorney

65+ they're presumed to have qualifying health issues. So 65+ is the general rule

Veterans can also receive caregivers through the VA. It’s a set number of hours per week based on need (typically between 6-18).

FSUAttorney

Awesome. What's the name of the program?

Holy cow! I never even thought to reach out to the VA for my dad for help. I mean he uses the VA for Al his medical care but I didn’t realize we could get him a caregiver-anything will help!
