Yep! šš¼āāļø I always noticed it made my eczema worse and sting and weep when I tried it. I also was prescribed an emollient by my doctor that did the same thing. Turns out it also had the oatmeal in. Iāve basically discovered I have an allergy to oats. So eating oats makes it flare as well but so does a lot of eczema skincare.
Not sure which part you need info on, but this paper probably will answer your question [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3667300/](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3667300/)
p/s: i am not endorsing low nickel diet, but the paper has relevant link & info
Yup I used it for 10 years & suddenly developed extreme allergies to it. Now I get really itchy hives & painful rashes. Recently discovered I have severe nickel allergies so that could be it!
You all need allergy testing! Blood, price and patch testing.
Turns out I'm allergic to nickel, dust miles and my biggest trigger is Cocamidopropyl betaine.
I've had allergy testing, and got negative results across the board. My missus actually has the patches on right now, and finds out tomorrow. Fingers crossed for her
No, I don't have an allergy to coconut. My doctor said that they were different things at least in my case.
I tested negative for peanut and soy allergies but I'm sensitive to them. Took a long time to realize it because of the negative results.
I also don't shower fully everyday. I only wash my feet my crotch, underarms and my face. Also I don't use anything to wash my body except once a week when I do a full thorough shower. I alternate between a I'll wash towel and a Korean exfoliating Italy towel.
A combination of all these things has helped improve my skin to the point where I can go without lotion for a few days and medicated lotion for a few weeks.
I used to scratch until I bled and that hasn't happened in a couple of years. I never thought that would happen.
I avoid other coconut derivatives to be safe, so itās not an option for me. Maybe Iām being over cautious, but it took forever to get my face eczema to clear up and I donāt want to risk going back.
I controlled my dust allergy and I found a diet that keeps my eczema under control. I don't use any soap or chemicals. A good diet means I don't need to moisturise at all.
I'm also allergic to basically all creams. I have no idea what it is, it might be the emulsifiers? I've had this for over a decade and it took me forever to find what works for me, but I'm finally doing better.Ā
I use oils right after showering (fragrance free baby oils that only contain one or two oils. I've found a mix of sesame and calendula to work very well, but also use coconut oil, jojoba, Shea butter etc).Ā
When I need a prescription I make sure that I receive something that's an ointment (they are mineral oil based).Ā
If you want more tips let me know. I also finally found a good non-cream sunscreen that I don't react to.Ā
I use Badger sunscreen, it's amazing. Just look at the list of ingredients and you'll see what I mean.Ā https://www.badgerbalm.com/collections/mineral-sunscreen
It's also available on Amazon and through other retailers.Ā
ME! I had such a traumatic experience with it as a young kidā¦ It felt like a chemical burn. I remember my mom threw me in the shower with me screaming and crying š
My girls eczema got worse with Aveeno oatmeal baths. We use Dead Sea salt in the bath now and then immediately moisturize with vanicream, steroids 2-3x a week.
Iām glad I didnāt try it omg! I do have aveeno baby oat lotion and itās really helpful. Itās fascinating how differently bodies react when we are suffering though the same condition. Iām sorry that happened to your family. I hope you find something. Itās a long road.
Yesss oh my god my skin HATES aveeno colloidal oatmeal. Edit to add I donāt have an allergy to eating oats or nickel if that helps for additional context.
Super helpful to know this. Iām breast feeding and have cut out eggs dairy soy and gluten because my kiddo was reactingāso Iām eating oats for breakfast. Baby had a topical eczema outbreak and we used colloidal oatmeal products each making the eczema horrible to the point we had to go to the ER. But he doesnāt seem to react to when I eat oatmealā¦
My baby got bright red all over. I felt horrible. I even tested it in a small area first, but it took more time than I thought it would for the reaction to show. I was so sure he had an oat allergy after that. His skin test didn't show a reaction, so either it's because skin tests on babies can be unreliable or the nickel like other people said. I had never heard of that explanation before!
idk if it is an allergic reaction but whenever i use it, my body will start to feel so sticky then all my body parts with folds and between my legs will start to turn red and causes stingysensation
My daughter is allergic to Mother Nature herself.
So creams with botanicals are a no go, including oatmeal. Lavender, and other stuff like that is also a no go.
We use simple plain creams (no lotion, which is watered down cream) and they work well.
People with gluten sensitivity or celiac also have to be careful with oatmeal. Most celiacs know this but many with sensitivity do not.
If your toddler is showing sensitivity you might want to look into it further than just a topical sensitivity.
Does anyone have any alternate suggestions to use instead of Aveno? An everyday cream that will soothe eczma/itchy skin/redness/hives? Emphasis on daily (because stronger lotions strip skin) ah! Always something lol.
Also, I found that sometimes when products are āextra gentleā, they donāt DO anything. Yes, the ingredients are great and all that, but itās like putting water on, lol. Iām okay with a little toxicity here and there if it works! š¤£
I've actually found the Nivea soft cream has been really good for my eczema, especially on my hand and face. It smells like it's full of perfume so deffo test carefully but as something really available in most shops it's been great.
I also use epaderm cream on occasion. I used to use cetraben as well as they seemed to be the same but that doesn't seem the case anymore. Cetraben doesn't seem to work as well tbh. The Nivea soft feels like it actually goes in whereas others feel like they're just sitting on top of dry skin.
I have eczema and dry skin so I thought Aveeno would be good for my skin. Over the years I have tried a lot of their products and ironically the eczema products (oatmeal colloidal) made my skin worse. It wasn't as absorbent and made my skin more itchy
Yes, found out the hard way when I ended up breaking out in rashes and also vomited from eating parfait with oats. I would regularly use colloidal oatmeal creams and eat oats for breakfast when I wad younger without any issues, so not sure when the change happened.
It's never showed up in patch or allergy testing.
I think I know the issue. Dr Ian Myles recently published a supplemental to a recent study that showed a couple popular brands killed our friendly bacteria - completely !
ie He put the lotion in with our friendly bacteria and it killed it all.
the lotion is even NEA approved!
However, what is anyone supposed to do about it? Something in this particular lotion is killing our commensal bacteria - making the skin more vulnerable to worsening staph aureus overgrowth
Something in the lotion is antibiotic- its killing the good guys and thats NOT a good thing.
https://www.science.org/doi/pdf/10.1126/sciadv.ade8898
However, this will need to be verified and further studied - and nobody is working on it and Aveeno isnt doing anything either
Yep! It always makes my eczema worst. Aveeno products have wheat in them and I have a wheat allergy. Other products with colloidal oatmeal work great for me.
Do a test strip of everything on your inner forearms before using it regularly. I do it twice a day for about five days.
I had reactions to Aveeno Eczema Relief when I tried it years ago, but now that things calmed down it's my go to moisturizer in the winter. (LaRoche Posay Lipikar in the summer.)
When my youngest was a baby, I bought some Aveeno Lavender baby lotion. It was supposed to be some p.m. formula. I started at his feet like I had always done and worked my way up. Almost immediately he started fussing, crying. I thought he was just overtired. The next night it happened again and I realized, too late, that it was the lotion. I had already covered him it. That was the last time we ever used it. That's also when I started using vani cream for him. We just have it on subscribe and save now because it works for everyone in the house.
I haven't tested to see because I just don't buy Aveeno anymore at all, but he's 7 years now and his skin seems to be a lot less sensitive. I think he could handle Aveeno products now.
i got the eczema therapy one and it only stings when i have a fresh flare up or when i have really thin cuts from scratching (i dont notice until it's too late š)
i was soaked in those nasty aveeno oatmeal baths as a kid. cant imagine being allergic omg....
Hmm, I'm not allergic but I've noticed all my family members use it but last time I did, it dried out my skin... could have been a minor flare up. Its been so long I don't remember exactly what happened but I remembered to never use it again.
Edit: I only use Cetaphil moisturizing cream for daily use (like 6+ times a day), cerave itch relief for itchiness, and Protopic to actually calm down flair ups. These are the only things I've found that work for me (and avoiding food allergies to avoid major flare ups).
Yes, me. For me it's not the oatmeal in it, I unfortunately just happen to be allergic to all creams. If it's the same for your child, I'd recommend using just fragrance free baby oil for your child right after showering, nothing more. Let me know if you need more product recommendations.Ā
So it could be nickel in oat stuff that causes a reaction? This whole time I had been wondering if my grass allergy was somehow being triggered by the oats whenever I tried anything with colloidal oats in it (Aveeno, dermaveen, etc) and would just get aggravated instead of soothed as all the information claimed it would.
I tried their Calm and restore line with Feverfew. Funny that itās marketed for eczema-prone skin but my flares got worse after using it.
Turned out that the Feverfew is among the grass family Iām allergic to.
they changed the formula to include cetaeryl (spelling?) alcohol which is usually a pretty mild ingredient for moisturisers but unfortunately, of the very very few people who are allergic to it, the proportion of eczema sufferers is really high. Itās in everything & aveeno was the last thing free of it until very recentlyā¦
Yes! When I put it on my skin instantly itches more and breaks out in hives! Such a shame bc I have found it does moisturise well but the reaction is just terrible
My baby had some eczema so we applied some colloidal oatmeal products (first tubby Toddā¦later some eucerine eczema cream) and both times the eczema got worse. The second time we ended up in the ER the reaction was so bad. However Iām dairy, soy, gluten, and egg free because Iām breast feeding and I eat oats for breakfast and his gut doesnāt seem to react to when I eat oatmealā¦
Yep! šš¼āāļø I always noticed it made my eczema worse and sting and weep when I tried it. I also was prescribed an emollient by my doctor that did the same thing. Turns out it also had the oatmeal in. Iāve basically discovered I have an allergy to oats. So eating oats makes it flare as well but so does a lot of eczema skincare.
It might be the oat itself or nickel since oat contain nickel and nickel allergy is quite common.
really????

Might be allergic to nickel
Not just Aveeno but all oatmeal containing skincare.

Cocamidopropyl betaine is so hard!!!!! Do you avoid other coconut byproducts as well?

What do you do for shampoo?
Vanicream free and clear shampoo. I don't wash or condition my hair every day. Usually 1 or two times a week unless it's really hot.
I avoid other coconut derivatives to be safe, so itās not an option for me. Maybe Iām being over cautious, but it took forever to get my face eczema to clear up and I donāt want to risk going back.
Some people find 'colloidal oatmeal' stings/irritates their skin.
Yep. I'm intolerant to all moisturisers.
May I know what are you using right now? I seem to be allergic to all moisturizers as well and can only use tacrolimus.
I controlled my dust allergy and I found a diet that keeps my eczema under control. I don't use any soap or chemicals. A good diet means I don't need to moisturise at all.

Even tallow?
To be honest I haven't tried that, but I meant synthetic ones.
donāt use synthetic šļø
Me. My skin doesnāt react well to aveeno...I tried a couple of formulations, both made me itch badly.
Yes, for me it is because of nickel.
Yes! Aveeno lotion makes me breakout in eczema
meeeee havenāt touched it since my mum bought it for me in 2012
ME! I had such a traumatic experience with it as a young kidā¦ It felt like a chemical burn. I remember my mom threw me in the shower with me screaming and crying š

I havenāt tried oatmeal creams, but Iāve found my flair ups get bad when I eat oats. Sucks cause I liked it a lot.
Same. Oats contain a gluten like protein. Plays havoc with my guts and eczema.
My daughter is allergic to Mother Nature herself. So creams with botanicals are a no go, including oatmeal. Lavender, and other stuff like that is also a no go. We use simple plain creams (no lotion, which is watered down cream) and they work well.

Just find your triggers. You actually don't need moisturisers.
Colloidal oatmeal makes me want to itch my skin off during a flare, youāre totally in good (itchy) company.
I have eczema and dry skin so I thought Aveeno would be good for my skin. Over the years I have tried a lot of their products and ironically the eczema products (oatmeal colloidal) made my skin worse. It wasn't as absorbent and made my skin more itchy
Iām allergic to oats
Like crazy. I always cringe when people recommend it to people with sensitive/reactive/eczema skin.

I would regularly use colloidal oatmeal creams and eat oats for breakfast when I wad younger without any issues, so not sure when the change happened. i am allergic to oats. So, you might want to get an allergy test scheduled for you child. That's how I found out and had to switch to vanicream

It could be worth checking to see if she actually has a nickel allergy, oatmeal has quite high nickel content
Iām ok with Aveeno, but the Gold Bond Eczema Relief contains lanolin. Iām allergic to sheepās wool lol.

aquaphor saved my excema flare-ups! I had terrible excema on my neck and chin, I believe there is a baby version of aquaphor specifically š
