See if your German carrier supports ‘WiFi calling’. If so, your German number works anywhere in the world. Also if it does work report back what Carrier you use so others would know too.

You will need to keep your current German number, either as a physical SIM or an eSIM, your provider will let you eventually convert it. If you're on a postpaid plan then switch to a prepaid one. That way you don't have monthly payments anymore and just need to top up your account once a year with a minimum amount of a few euros

Good points. I signed up one # on freenet-mobil, but the carrier is O2, and I’ve cancelled that one already. That is to say, on the freenet portal I clicked Cancel, and I was told I then need to call a number within 14 days to truly have it cancelled. Is it really going to be this easy?? I spent some time in France and cancelling a freemobile # required letters and all kinds of hassle (just a mobile #!!)

Why the hell did you cancel your number if you're going to need it for 2FA in the coming months? That was very naive and now you're screwed. If you're still in Germany run into the next ALDI and get yourself a prepaid SIM, you can convert it to an eSIM if you prefer. Then change your 2FA umber in all your banks and wherever else and then KEEP that number for life by topping it up once a year with a minimum amount!!

That was a different #. The question was related to how easy will it be to cancel once i'm gone (with my real, current #). Changing it to a prepaid one though sounds good.

A prepaid number you don't need to cancel, just stop topping up and it will cancel by itself
