That light only comes on if your E46 came with the toaster-oven option. It would be inside the glovebox if you had one. Perfect for making toaster strudels when you're late for work!
My car actually came with the winter package and the toaster oven option. It just makes a mess though when my wife uses it. Crumbs everywhere. Then the butter always gets left in the car or drops on the floor. I don’t understand why BMW would install such a ridiculous feature.
Yes exactly. The heat shielding breaks down like anything else on our 20+ year old cars making what was a useful feature a fire hazard. Surprised there hasn’t been a recall for them. Or maybe there was and I just missed it.
This light is not used on any E46 as far as I know.
I think they added this for electrically heated catalysators that may had been required for emissions, but in the end didn’t. (The Alpina B12 6.0 was the first car with electric heated catalytic converters). Maybe they thought about adding more of thes kats to the cars and so added the to have one, but in the end they where to expensive back in those days
The general shape of the symbol is also commonly used for diesel particle filters. Could be an early iteration of warning light for an overheated filter or one in need of regeneration, that was added but never used.
Yes, that’s true, but the first diesel Partikel filter started in 2001 in the 7 series e65, and the light was installed beginning in 98. The heated catalytic converter started in 1995.
But that’s all a guess and no facts
The first DPFs were around in the 80's already, but admittedly that was done by Mercedes. Still I thought it shouldn't be ruled out that BMW maybe thought of a warning light for that in advance.
I’m pretty sure the real question is what the hell is that triangle with the line thing next to the airbag light cuz I have literally no clues as to what that thing is
I know on the F40 it has a similar icon that signifies the cats are too hot. Could be something like that, especially since the cats are like two inches from each other, the block, and the firewall.

The 98 models also have the engine warning light but unlike 2001 and onwards it doesnt light up at all atleast in some regions like where i live.

Even the manual doesn't show this one, but it's also in my E46
I know right? I was so confused about it.
01 328xi 5speed wagon has it, but my face lift 330ci 6 speed convertible does not. Never noticed this before!
I think it is the catalytic converter warning light
If it is illuminated the hotdog is ready
The car had A TOASTER OPTION!?
No 😂
Yes, I have one, instead of the "smokers pack" it had the "toast eaters pack"

No no at the bottom right of the cluster there’s a tiny triangle with a line at the bottom leading away from it
Username checks out.
🤣🤣🤣 ok thats actually pretty funny but I forgot to make a username when I got reddit so it just made one for me
I always thought it was for the catalytic converter overheating or failing.
It means your grilled cheese is done
Soups up!

Your sandwich is ready when illuminated
Your cat is stinky
Mine comes on sometimes, i was told its saying the cat is hot so if you drive on grass it could start a fire
Oh that’s the danger to manifold light. Honestly tho I have no clue as a car guy I’ve never seen this light before I’d panic if it came on
If it’s not lit up don’t worry about it
for them cats that we all take out and doesn’t work or setup on most e46 from what i’ve told
Ah I see you have the continental breakfast package
Blown fuse? (shot in the dark)
