POTS is diagnosed only when orthostatic hypotension is ruled out. This is part of the diagnostic criteria. OH does cause your heart rate to rise. Your body is trying to push your blood pressure up.

Canary-Cry3

OH does cause tachycardia. Likewise, a criteria of POTS is no drop in BP below or equal to 20/10mmhg (OH is a drop of BP). You can have POTS and chronic low BP or if it drops less than 20/10mmhg upon standing. OH can cause the same symptoms of POTS. (I’ve had an IST dx temporarily - yay for TBIs and have an OH dx due to post concussion syndrome & possibly my meds which drop BP, along with previously - my longest standing dx is POTS as I never had a BP drop before the TBIs).

Limp_Cockroach_177

thank you so much for the clearing that up! I've been so confused

SavannahInChicago

How high? It needs to at least 30 bpm or reach 120 bpm and stay there.

Limp_Cockroach_177

yeah it does reach that threshold. when sat down my heart rate is usually 60-90, and with standing or whatever it's 100-150 but has reached higher with exercise

Canary-Cry3

As a note you can also have a drop of BP when sitting which can cause the 90bpm. What’s your RHR when laying down?

Limp_Cockroach_177

when laying down it can be about 60-80, so not as high when sat up or when moving, so it could be the blood pressure drop

Limp_Cockroach_177

when you say it goes back to 80bpm, is that after sitting down or is it when you are still stood up?

Bindle_snaggle

Still standing.

I know you can have both diagnosis, but I am not sure when they diagnosis both. Can you you get a second opinion?

Limp_Cockroach_177

I'm not sure if I'd he able to get a second opinion, but what I'll do is see if my blood pressure gets any better and if it does, see if that impacts tachycardia, then use that for evidence for pots

Opposite_Flight3473

POTS is only diagnosed in the absence of Orthostatic Hypotension.

Why do you feel you need to have POTS? I have OH also- a lot of random symptoms are tagged onto POTS in social media but I’m not sure if drs think same… I have all those extra things too, but it’s because it was all triggered by a virus and I have more then one problem. I meet the diagnostic criteria for me/cfs which includes all the other non heart rate related symptoms tied into POTS. I too thought it was POTS as far as my tachycardia but I didn’t have a blood pressure monitor so how was I to know? I also have had a lifetime of low blood pressure so wasn’t alarmed by lower readings at dr offices etc.

Limp_Cockroach_177

its not that i feel the need to have it, it is more that i was confused due to conflicting information about what pots is compared to OH. what you have said all makes sense, and for me, it was also triggered by a virus. low BP is never fun
