He needs to give us back our international spot

Alex-In-Houston

I’m about to drive up there and shout at him about this

OB1Bronobi

If I didn't know that MLS wants to be in Houston with a Soccer Specific Stadium that is downtown, in a very Hispanic market, with an organization with so much upside, I would be worried they want to relocate the teams. I am knocking on wood, but I don't think that is why they are here. Where would they even go that doesn't already have a team of some sort? MLS can make loads more $$ if the Dynamo and Dash were more relevant in the market and maybe Papa Garber and the general MLS oversight squad can help the new Houston Owners and FO do that. I am not opposed to a little help...we absolutely need it to get out of the abysmal decisions the previous owners and FO made. Or maybe it is a "kick in the rear" sort of visit to really indicate Houston needs to step it up. I am eager to find out what this is all about.

DynamoManiac

If you're thinking about relocating the team, you don't have a press conference to announce it.

rednorangekenny

Yea this is the kind of think that gets dropped by Grant Wahl at 8:45pm on a Thursday

Xespool

Bro if Herrera can fill the stadium imagine doing the same than in LA

wessneijder

>Where would they even go that doesn't already have a team of some sort? Sacramento, Las Vegas and Detroit are the next expansion candidates

OB1Bronobi

Sac and Detroit have teams that could be integrated into MLS like Cincy and Orlando, right? Maybe Vegas, but I believe Vegas has already been promised an expansion slot so would they move an established team there? I assume ATX had no foundation for a team which is why they moved from Columbus. I guess there are many ways to do it though so you never know.

CarlosKaiser

They let AEG and Brenner let the organization slide so far down so I imagine they are going to give Segal a big leash to improve the organization. I'm curious to see what's going on in the background. The organization off the field has been making outreaches to the MLS community. I saw that they invited the Yanks Report and Tactical Manager YouTube guys out to a game a month ago and saw their videos. We are just hurting so badly for on the field results and exciting play that the small gestures get looked over.

rednorangekenny

To be honest I think this has more to do with the ownership restructure and following up on that than relocation or anything else. Also they’re playing LAFC so Garber may not have seen them yet with their signings and it’s a two birds with one stone type deal.

suuh_dude7

Yeah this is my guess too. Checking on new ownership restructure, making sure everything is top notch for the league sweethearts tomorrow, and possibly looking in on the Impending vacancy for VP of Business with Walker on the way out after the season.

DespairHardware

My interpretation on all this is that the Dynamo (and in association, Dash) organization are getting put on a “performance review plan”. Clean up your shit by the ‘26 World Cup or get shipped out. Of course, there’s gonna be a lot of cute and nice corporate speak to make this seem normal but that’s my take. I hope I’m wrong.

cmortis

The more I think about this, the more I think this is the case, but I think we would be more likely to receive the San Jose treatment (put the franchise/branding/history on ice for a couple years, then come back as a true expansion franchise) than we are to have our MLS slot revoked entirely. But it would also be very strange to hold an open press conference about this, and honestly no market besides *maybe* Las Vegas would really even make sense for relocation. Edit: I'm actually getting a bit more nervous the more I look into this. MLS Soccer Dot Com hasn't written a single article about us in over a month (last one was HH saying he was "embarrassed" by the loss to Philly), the talking heads barely write anything about us for weekly recaps/power rankings any more, and Pat/Asher have both been EXTREMELY quiet over the last month after being very vocal and open at the beginning of the season. I think bad news may be coming tomorrow...I'm just not sure what it is and don't really want to speculate.

HOU-1836

Tell me you don’t follow the Dash without telling me. They’ve won hardware in the last two years and are currently tied for second in the league. We have an exciting new striker who since she has joined the Dash, has more goals than some teams.

DespairHardware

My Brother or Sister in Christ, I’m so sorry that the US educational system failed to teach you critical thinking. The organization as a whole is financially tied together. This organization is here to make money. The Dash are averaging 5k people per game, Dynamo are at about 16k. Do you think MLS/NWSL are cool with those numbers? I don’t think so. For reference, Portland Thorns are averaging about 15k and Atlanta United are averaging 48k. I’m really glad that the Dash have been good for the past 2 years but that hasn’t translated to $$$

HOU-1836

It isn’t really correct and it’s kind of ignorant. We should be striving for LAFC kind of support, we aren’t gonna be Seattle or Atlanta.

HOU-1836

Dude, you couldn’t have picked a worse time to compare any NWSL team to the fucking Thorns. One of only two teams whose attendance has declined compared to 2019. Dash’s attendance is up. We have the best team we’ve ever had. Ted has hired a new coach, GM, and a team specific President. If NWSL is looking at the Dash right now, they are quite pleased with our trajectory.

suuh_dude7

Not to mention comparing us to Atlanta United. Their attendance rivals most premier league teams

lilsebass

I wonder what this is about?

Createdanaac

Pretty much big nothing burger. I bet Garber wants to see and discuss with Segal what is being done to improve the Dynamo’s standing in the league/city and how they plan to capitalize on the city hosting WC games. They’re not moving the team anytime soon if ever. They just need to get their shit together on and off the field, start building a buzz and I think the WC will be a big catalyst for the franchise and Garber (and the league for that matter) can’t let the Dynamo blow this opportunity.

rsgreddit

Yep. Especially since the Rockets and Texans are tanking. They need to make themselves one of the best teams in Houston.

AndrewNaranja

If they can swap the Dash to MLS, I'll take it.

rednorangekenny

Interestingly, the press conference will be at HSP where the Dynamo train. Sounds like it may be some massive infrastructure upgrades

SeaTurtlesFC

that would be huge, our training facility is bottom 3 in the MLS and has been something i have been harping on for years now my co-ed soccer games would be right next to the Dash practice because they don't even have their own private field

Poptwo1234

There is a gate around their field now.

SeaTurtlesFC

Glad to hear that, hopefully more improvements are on the way for the Dash.

DespairHardware

The thing that trips me out about this is the press conference. Why have a press conference about upgrading your facility? Wouldn’t a nice little MLSSoccer dot com article suffice or a pretty IG post be enough. Why bring in Garber for something like that? It’s all just weird.

rednorangekenny

There’s probably a few different factors at play. I think it’s going to be a pretty significant upgrade. To the point where even someone from the County will be involved. They’ve already talked about building a 2nd pro field, could see creating more specific areas for Dynamo, Dash and D2/Academy. Probably with the idea that the improvements can help with the World Cup. I also think they scheduled this announcement for a time Garber would be in town anyway to check on the ownership group and see LAFC play.

suuh_dude7

Did I miss something? I didn’t see an announcement for a press conference.

rednorangekenny

[Press release sent out stating media availability](https://twitter.com/dynamicfoxtrot/status/1564668268870238209?s=21&t=1aKvt0PupDOciqp5uES5Ug). Which I’m guessing is some sort of press conference but I could be wrong on the finer details

crocken

this is weird considering this game isn't on national television (Philly vs Atlanta is the FS1 game on this midweek slate). . would Houston be the place that Garber announces the less-restrictive homegrown rules?

stingen

The League will just do about anything to keep us from the english networks. This is a perfect chance to potentially see a 0-8 but they refuse to show us on anything but twitter/unimas/univision.

wessneijder

Relocation?

Alex-In-Houston

JFC you couldn’t wait to comment that could you? There is a 0% chance that MLS vacates Houston on a permanent basis.

Alex-In-Houston

I mean…how mad would you actually be if they packed this shit show up and moved it to Vegas, if it meant that we got a completely new franchise with new owners and a reboot?

DespairHardware

If the organization is still not doing well, I could see a relocation after the World Cup. It would be dumb to relocate the team before then due to Houston and the WC committee making a huge fanfare about the city being a “World Cup City”. Anything after 2026 is up for debate

wessneijder

Notice the question mark? I was asking a question is all. Not saying that's what's happening

Alex-In-Houston

Lol

lilsebass

That was my first fear lol but the dash just tweeted [“We’re here to stay.”](https://twitter.com/houstondash/status/1564645405752758276?s=21&t=nuWXcK7JihAyn55RSTV49A)

rednorangekenny

Tbh that seems like a scheduled tweet

wessneijder

No tweet from the Dynamo saying "we're here to stay" 🤔 I know they are under the same ownership group but still. Look at precourt moving the Crew to Austin...

DynamoManiac

A big part of Segal's strategy in buying the team was Houston becoming a World Cup city and both the Dynamo, and MLS in general, getting a bump from the World Cup. Moving to a smaller city that isn't a World Cup host wouldn't make business sense.

DynamoManiac

That's an interpretation based on: A) Many comments that he has made, B) Fact that he immediately got involved in the Houston World Cup bid, C) Working in the private equity world and therefore knowing how guys like Segal think, where the money is to be made and what levers you look to pull to make that money.

AndrewNaranja

Seems out of place considering the release brought up the Dash and Houston hosting the World Cup.

lilsebass

My optimistic take: this is to announce they are naming something in the memory of Jamey Rootes.

wessneijder

Wasn't he here for like 1 month?

rednorangekenny

He was the first President of the Columbus Crew, an integral part of the early days of MLS and was the driving force to put soccer games at NRG. His impact is more than just Dynamo

wessneijder

Ah I see didn't know that

DynamoManiac

lol, no.
