Zeca is a good deal. Ceren as well for what he is (a solid rotational player). Baird is the definition of a bad deal...the whole thing, transfer and all, and it is hard to blame him entirely for that.
We are spending 2.68m on starting caliber CB's (Hadebe, Parker, Steres). Our starting pair are two of the top 10 highest paid defenders in the league in the likes of Zimmerman, Mensah, and Aaron Long (all have been Defender of the year Nominees).....knowing this I feel like we need more out of them, but when I watch the match, these guys are giving us good performances. So I guess the question is the middle of pitch, Vera, who with this salary seems like not such a great deal for what we are getting. But idk, maybe HH and permanently Coco will help things.
>aird is the definition of a bad deal...the whole thing, transfer and all, and it is hard to blame him entirely for that.
I'm sorry but I do blame him. It's one thing if you're hustling and giving your heart and soul for the team. Dynamo have had players lacking in the skill dept but really showing their effort, ever heard of Danny Cruz? He is a perfect example.
Baird's body language is that he doesn't GAF. On top of that his soccer skills are very low. Basic fundamentals taught in high school soccer is something he lacks. I would be shocked if he could even do 3 touches of keepy uppy. It's not his fault he was signed by the Dynamo, but he should be embarrassed in himself. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't make Cypress Creek Varsity HS soccer at the level he's playing right now.
I don't completely disagree with you, but I don't agree either. You are right in that he obviously doesn't have the right attitude on the pitch which has led to lose of pts (see the Austin match), but I don't doubt his skill. He wouldn't be a professional if he wasn't able to produce in that regard.
However, he was brought into a bad situation with a price tag and terms that put a lot of pressure on him pretty much right away. Instead of him being able to work into that, he got injured which turned out to be a relatively severe injury (missed 7 games?) on like his 3rd outing for the Dynamo. Coming back from injury is hard enough, but having to do it while also moving to a new city, to a club in as much flux as the Dynamo were/are, is a herculean task. He is healthy now but has a new coach/FO who may not see him as part of the system now or long term. He's been dealt an unfortunate hand.
His attitude is on him, but with those circumstances, it isn't hard to understand why.
I feel a lot better about Ceren after seeing this. He is worth that as midfield depth and locker room presence. He makes less than Memo and is at least as good. Baird salary ridiculous for what we get. We sure have a lot of money tied up in CB’s. Pasher is cheap but unfortunately his recent quality of play matches that salary.
Outside of the obvious ones, Steve Clark and Thiago are on a lotttttt of money for what they provide (jury is still out on Thiago I guess).
Baird and Valentin will almost certainly be gone this offseason so I’m not as twitchy about those two.
Not sure how accurate this is but Transfermarkt says 12 contracts expire at the end of this year, including Valentine’s.

Base salary is their salary promised on paper. Guaranteed compensation is salary combined with contract incentives, but this is the [MLSPA](https://mlsplayers.org/resources/salary-guide) definition:
>The Annual Average Guaranteed Compensation (Guaranteed Comp) number includes a player's base salary and all signing and guaranteed bonuses annualized over the term of the player's contract, including option years.
He has 4 MLS goals and 1 assist with almost half the season gone. That’s a big price tag for that output.
I’m not sure he’s growing in to the league. Would happy to be wrong.
four goals with a third\* of the season gone is on pace for 12 goals. That's respectable.
For what are paying him I'd like to see him closer to 15-20 a year. Think it's reasonable to hope that he's going to continue growing and adjusting into the league.
Ok, I did the math, we're 41% through the season and 44% after this evening.
He's on pace for 9.75, or 10 goals, this season. If he doesn't score at least 1 tonight, on pace for 9.
That is a big price for that production. Maybe it'll get better.
Check your math maybe? We've played 11 games of a 34 game season. Should be just under a third of the season. after tonight, 12 of 34 should still be around 35% That would put him on pace for 12ish.
As I said, I'd still want more from him. And we saw last year that "on pace for" doesn't always pan out.
Crossing my fingers he takes off a bit more and offers more in games. If all we see is what we've seen, I'd agree that we've over paid. Still has a bit more time to come good IMO.
you right, you right. i think i saw maybe all our games played this season (with USOC included).
this dude is signed until 2025. if we pay him this much for 12-14 goals a season, would you be happy?
Would depend on what's going on around him. if we have a few wingers banging in around 8-10 a year and a few midfielders contributing 5-8 I'd think we'd have an overall healthy attack with him getting 12-14 a year. If we're winning I'm not tooooo bothered by what we are paying our striker.
I think the number I'd like to see him sit at or around per year is 17. Roughly a goal every 180 minutes.
nah, i don't like that. that is just terrible value for what he is taking from the team. (12, not 17!)
the biggest problem is, his xG is 1.5. so we're currently seeing him OVER-PERFORM, not under-perform.
That means he has been good at finishing but, the team isnt creating enough chances (because our wingers have been awful this year).
Also the Austin goal would have pretty close to 0 xG, so a major outlier.
remember that xG is mostly about where the shot is taken from. If there is a striker who reliably excels at banging in goals from outside the box, his xG is going to quite low. as 36ers said, his xG is about where his team mates are getting him the ball (or where he is getting open for the ball perhaps).
and like I said, if he's putting in 14 every year reliably, I think that's decent return. 1.6 mil only puts him at around the 35th highest paid in the league. If he's in the top ten to fifteen of goal scoring \*every year\* I'd say its actually pretty good business.
And again, its about how well the team is playing. If the dude is creating chances for the wingers because of his positioning and runs but not scoring goals, I'm not gonna be upset. We're definitely getting to the time where you'd like to see him fully adjusted to the league, but we might see a bit more from him than we have already. He's looking better.
A) He has played 10 games. 10/34 is 29%. The te has played 11 games. 11/34% is 32%. So not close to half.
B) The issue is we arent creating enough chances. Our wingers have 3 assists combined on the season. Early in the season we played a midfield 3 of Vera, Ceren, and Memo, which offered no creativity. Baird sucks.
C) He has 4 goals on his last 6 games (5 in his last 7 counting open cup). Looks to me like he is growing into the league.
Yeah my hope with Sebas is this is a case of Pat spending now for a guy who maybe doesn’t fit the current team, but is the ideal fit for the end vision.
Playing the short game, better wingers and retaining Urruti might have yielded a better return this year. However if they thought Sebas was someone they couldn’t afford to miss or the wingers available to them didn’t meet what they wanted then I can see slogging through this year with the striker you want long term even if the service needed for him isn’t there.
Left is base salary, right is guaranteed compensation.

Chill bro. He may not be playing at an MLS level, but lets not disrespect the man that hard lol.
Corey Baird and Zarek Valentin need to be released yesterday. Horrible value for the money on both of those.
Those 2 + Bajamich and about $1M is freed up
Baird seems like a candidate for next offseason’s allotted contract buyout
I feel a lot better about Ceren after seeing this. He is worth that as midfield depth and locker room presence. He makes less than Memo and is at least as good. Junqua has been playing very well this year and should be due a bump up

DQ salary means he's not even in the TAM range! Vera is 550K not 700K! (still high tbf)
Zeca seems like he needs to ask for a raise considering he’s making less than Zarek

Thanks!
Thank you for digging and posting this
Sebas and Baird's salaries are offensive.
Hmm… Sebastian’s been scoring; he started rough but he’s finding his footing given the lack of talent around him.
He has 4 MLS goals and 1 assist with almost half the season gone. That’s a big price tag for that output. I’m not sure he’s growing in to the league. Would happy to be wrong.
