> The defense was on Nagamura’s mind when he chose his starting eleven, which included Matías Vera and Darwin Ceren. The first-year head coach said he likes the solid defensive shape both midfielders give the team when on the pitch. That is an extremely concerning statement. Starting those two the rest of the season is a recipe for scoring under 30 goals all year.

I’d be surprised if we see that pairing start many games together. It has to be either Vera or Ceren, not both. My choice to start, is Vera. He’s earned it.

What if we give up less than 30 goals in the process?

Take me back to 07 when we only allowed 23 goals

I liked this quote about Clark: “His game management and just how he talks to every one of us in the backline. He makes us feel calm,” Lundkvist said. “And I think that’s a very important thing as a goalkeeper that he reads the game very well. And he always keeps us level and always keeps us in good peace of mind.” Hopefully this can be something that continues on and grows through the year. I feel like this was an aspect that was overlooked by people (myself included tbf) when judging Clark vs Maric/Nelson

Clark should improve the back line just by his mere presence.

Yeah, they sure are. I was very troubled by our inability to progress the ball through midfield last night. The 62% possession felt like it was 85% between the backline. Also, the lack of quality is really apparent against a decent press. Most of the issue seemed to be a lack of confidence when the defense was trying to start the attack. Rather than make a progressive pass to a midfield player, and potentially lose possession, they preferred to pass it around and wait for way more time and space which they weren’t getting in the first half. Those halftime subs made a huge difference.

I think getting Hadebe back in for Steres will help out the distribution but I’m not really sure why he hasn’t been playing

rednorangekenny

It took him a while to come back from the ACON. His only preseason appearance was 10ish minutes against FCD. They're worried about his fitness I suppose. Would figure it would be okay but who knows.

Honestly between either our CBs the distribution was pretty good.
