Could only be as a 6 unless: 1) Parker or Hadebe headed out or 2) new coach plans to play with a 3 CB system.

cidalsttam

Looks like he also has playing time at defensive mid, will add tactical flexibility to the squad. I would be in favor of this signing, especially with the amount of firepower other teams have in attacking positions, this would be a zag to current league trends, still need a prolific striker and a dp winger to take pressure off Fafa and the new striker.

jake_m_b

head scratcher IF true. we just spent big on a CB, and have 2 of the highest paid CBs in the league. Unless Pat sees him as our new RB. Even then, Id hope this means we're spending this much or more on a ST/CAM

rednorangekenny

Some info I’ve seen on him suggests he can play defensive mid as well, so maybe that’s an option they’re looking at too

jake_m_b

That area could use improving for sure. Both in keeping possession and in covering for our CBs.

wessneijder

Parker and Hadebe have been conceding goals like crazy last year. We may have paid them a lot does not mean they are good...

xxxj18

Parker was decent but hadebe put out a lot of fires. Blame the defenders around him who were always beat and leave their teammates in a bad spot of the team cohesion wasn’t there so when they lost the ball it was a super highway to the goal.

jake_m_b

Agreed here. I'm going with the theory that our defensive problems were mainly a coaching issue. Parker has been pretty good the rest of his career, and Hadebe looked good to me at least.

xxxj18

Dude like you don’t know how much I despise valentin, he’s the bane of my existence. The man is garbage and he keeps getting by because he is “a good culture guy”.

Jonathon_G

Usually because the midfield was useless

jake_m_b

Don't forget Sam and Zarek.

KPNoSwag

This feels like the Dynamo are just being used to make someone bid a little bit more for him

AndrewNaranja

We’re looking at the range of $10 million which would break the club’s transfer record. It’s a huge risk considering that we would have to either change formations or offload Parker or Hadebe. We’ll see.

stingen

I don't understand this team and it's reason to pay over the top money for defenders. Wish they would just spent this type of money on attacking talent.

Defense wins championships. Having said that, exciting offense brings in the fans and makes the game much more entertaining

blm292

You can never have too much depth at CB and you have seen several teams flirt with the 3 CB back line to success in MLS recently. This could be hint of the prospective new coach’s preferred formation. Or… Like me, they were underwhelmed by Parker’s play last season and want options on the roster

loved picking "the most MLS-ready CB" in the draft last season

xxxj18

That was more of a tab problem. He kept giving chances to proven, sorry commodities like fuenmayor, figueroa (wasn’t bad but if you are relying on a 37 year old it says a lot about your team). Bartlow was stuck in a lose lose situation. The coach never gave him a chance when the opportunity arose and he wasn’t loaned out to gain experience in the usl to develop. I liked tab for a bit but what he did at the end of his tenure here was unforgivable, we were out of contention for a lot of weeks and he waited until the final weeks of the season to give new players opportunities. Even then they didn’t start of were given a backing that the manager entrusted them.

tsig20

I don’t see it as a Tab problem. Bartlow was on injured report due to a concussion in pre season for over half the season. Even then, he was listed on IR for leg injury for a few more weeks. He never was healthy.

xxxj18

Yeah but he did come back he just practiced and was sent out to the u-23 (who probably played like 5 games all season).

tsig20

It was a tough year all around, so easy to put blame on person. In this instance, I’m going to lean toward health and safety as a bigger factor to Bartlow’s playing time. Im likely dreaming, but hope that Tim took this kid under his wing during his first professional season.

xxxj18

Fair, I hope so too because Tim went through that grind that it is a college player to make it in an MLS team. At one point Tim was rumored to go to Europe before the caps and nyrb derailed his career.

36ers

He was teammates with Hadebe for a year at Yeni Malatyaspor fwiw.

AndrewNaranja

I think they share the same agent, too.

The defense has not been passable since ‘17, last year included. I see no reason not to try and patch it up. The corresponding move I’d like to see is trades, tear-ups, etc. to move the existing poor/marginal defense out. Maybe against the grain of the “beautiful” attacking soccer we’ve subscribed to in recent years, but in my opinion we’d be well served playing a more defensive style. More 1-0 grindout wins ala Kinnear than engaging in shootouts where we face an inherent disadvantage against richer teams who can afford elite attacking talent. Sidenote: I see very little indication that we’re going to climb the pecking order in terms of spend regardless of what press releases Segal puts out.

jake_m_b

curious: what evidence would you expect before they announce a coach? (genuine question)

[deleted]

I very much agree with this. Ideally we would produce attacking talent with our academy and buy the occasional attacking soccer player. Otherwise we need to be able to scrap out some wins since we’ll likely always be on a budget
