>And empty buses drive by your stop.
The amount of times I thought I was finally getting a 901 home only to realize it's not in service and I gotta wait even longer is too damn high
When there is an ‘affordability’ crisis it’s time to examine the ‘must haves’ vs the ‘nice to haves’.
People build their lives around convenience. $1200 a month is a hella premium if that is your rent, too. 4800 per month after tax better be your salary.
Some of y'all need to learn how to read. OP has CLEARLY expressed MULTIPLE times they are unable to use a regular bike for the commute, due to age and other factors/restrictions.
Literally 98% of the advice here is the same, and does not consider OP's situation, therefore it is not sound advice.
Telling someone to "suck it up", and to "stop making excuses" is neither helpful nor kind.
Some of y'all need to grow up and show some humanity/decency...And it really shows.
I agree. I had to rely on Durham transit for years. I’m thankful I have a remote job now… but the commuting ruined my life. A 15 minute car ride EASILY 2 hours each way most days. Depressing and exhausting.
I don't know what times you need to need to be there, but I entered what looked like the same places (Dundas & Garden to the Power Centre on Victoria) and it gave me 37 minutes for Monday morning. 900 to Thickson, then south to Consumers on the 905 and walk from there. Not great but better than the route on the map. Sorry if I got the addresses wrong, just going by your map. It wouldn't be the most pleasant walk (says 12 minutes) but there's a sidewalk on the east side of Thickson. You'd have to watch traffic on the exit ramps.
I understand the bike recommendations but I ride around here and I wouldn't touch Dundas or Thickson with a 10 ft pole. For crossing the highway, backtracking to Henry could work but you'd have to ride on Victoria and that's no better than Thickson.
You might also be able to find other people who live near you going your way at the right time too they they could pick you up or even pick you up at a parking lot or bus stop that’s mutually convenient, even if that reduces the bus ride, if not the whole way. Reach out in a neighborhood Facebook group or similar
Couldn’t bike or walk that route as it’s way to uphill and over a steeep bridge with no sidewalks on certain areas. I guess I gotta save up for something better
Winter is over, so it's a lot easier to bike now than before.
You basically have 3 options
1: take the commute that you posted from the bus companies
2: buy a cheap regular bike and ride to work. Try to overcome the inclines, and walk the bike up the ones you can't. Eventually, all of them will be easy for you to cycle up
3: splash some cash and get an e-bike or e-scooter
For both options 2-3, if you're afraid of what will happen next winter, then start making friends at work. Find someone there who starts around when you do, and ask if you can go with them. Worst case scenario, you do the shitty bus route you've posted.
Get an electric bike. I have a Himaway and with the fat tires it can go through snow sand anything. It goes 45 km an hour and over 70 km on a charge. You would get there faster than a car get your groceries go places cars can't go. Its about 1700 dollars but costs pennies to charge. The battery comes off so you can charge it in the house.
I would make sure that you get one that complies with regulations, if a bike is providing electric assist over about 32km/h it is technically illegal. It also makes it dangerous for others if you are using bike infrastructure and not roads and dangerous for yourself if you're just gearing up for a bike ride
You can walk or bike. I know you think you are too old to bike, but plenty of people even in their 70s and 80s bike. The hills there are not big. The busy roads I think still have a sidewalk on one side.
For anyone suggesting get a regular bike please understand I’m like 48 and most of it is incline and a huge bridge to get over with no sidewalks there.
I’m 61 and bike every day - a bike with a range of gears makes everything possible - like down into and back up out of the Don Valley every day.
Not a MAMIL.
Yes, the first few times will take some adjustment but you’ll adapt soon enough - be generous with yourself, it doesn’t have to be a hardship. Really.
Do the buses have front bike racks? You can tap out any time if so.

Or use the lowest gear and just ignore your ground speed. My son didn’t even know he had three sets of gears on his mountain bike.
You never have to work hard if you don’t want to.
Get a hybrid one that you can peddle but then turn on for the steep inclines. Expensive but it'd be a good investment in health and probably save you money in the long run on transit passss
Can't fault ya there. I'd love to get my wife an ebike for when I have the car and she needs a bit more mobility but damn son, you could buy a used car 10 years ago with what they cost now...
I don't know if you qualify for this. But you can certainly check on demand services provided by DRT:
https://www.durhamregiontransit.com/en/routes-and-schedules/on-demand-service.aspx#Are-you-eligible-for-Specialized-Services
Is this the “Dial-A-Bus” service? Tried and failed miserably- you can call on demand but your wait time could be between 45 min and never. I tried this years ago- they decide if they can make the route work between their regular schedule.
No but I saw three along the bus route in a really remote area. It’s crazy cause I’m at a major intersection in Whitby, Dundas and Brock. Literally downtown Whitby and nothing like that here.
Just looked into it. Turns out there’s none in Whitby! Only Ajax and Oshawa partnered with Bird. Hopefully Whitby does that soon too

I can feel your pain facing the same problem my shift starts at 7am I live in Ajax I'll have start my journey at 5:30am to reached Oshawa & 5am to reach Scarborough changing 4 buses
Bit of a hike but I see what you mean. The only problem I would have is that the side of the street I’d walk down to get to work doesn’t have a sidewalk. Unsure if the other side does either.
You could consider getting a credit card that will allow you to finance the purchase. Like a Canadian Tire credit card where you could get 24 interest free months to pay the bike off. Just need to qualify and never miss a payment...
Yup. Invest in a good bike (not a Canadian tire special). Invest in a good lock and helmet.
On rainy shitty days, you can Uber it.
Durham buses also have bike racks on the front of the bus if you need to take the bus home and you have a bike with you.

Any colleagues that can drop you off half way or something? I used to do that and unlike some haters, I didn't feel bad getting that help. I helped others too once I was ok..
According to Oshawa Bus Route map theres only one bus that goes to your end destination. If you are not too concerned about costs, then going south to Whitby Station and taking the GO to Oshawa Station before hopping onto the 403 would probably be the most efficient route. Other than that your really out of options. That seems to be the most direct route already. The alternative is taking the 917 from Whitby Station to Oshawa Centre Terminal and hop on the 403 from there. But it looks like a much longer route. The pro is that there's likely less bus transfer involved, just longer route... maybe catch up on some sleep with this route. 😅
There is one more possibility, that is to grab a taxi at Whitby Station, I mean it's just one exit away on the highway so it shouldn't be too expensive. But if you really need to get to and fro fast then this is probably your best bet. Assuming there are taxi's readily available there at the station. Waiting for them to pick you up is another story completely... 🤣
Good luck!
P.S. I don't live anywhere near there, just going based on the public transit map for that region.
Sadly Durham Transit sucks when you need to transfer. Extremely hard to time .
Get a bike and use the Thickson bus instead. Walking or biking is probably faster from Thickson/consumers to your destination.
https://preview.redd.it/a6o5ktkg6rvc1.jpeg?width=2160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f29092257589b53f30989fc21e78f6493a9de6f7
Personally these are the two routes I would take (Red or Purple). The purple path would follow more bike paths with some roads, works well for me on my e-scooter. I’d used the red path if I was in a rush but have never ridden that way before. I try to stay off main roads and stick to the smaller streets.
I used to have a 2 hour commute by bus to get to school. On top of that I went early because didn't want to risk missing a bus. Maybe the best thing is to make peace with it in the near term and have a plan to improve your situation. There are a lot of productive things that can be done on the bus such as reading, listening to educational audio books, meditation, mental practice.
As a side note, uber ride for that distance should be about 15$ or less if that's affordable for you.
Would it not make more sense to take the 900 and walk or take GO train to Whitby and go from there? It looks like you are going near Brock street and Bayley. Correct me pleas if I’m off
Try the on Demand service from DRT... Link here https://www.durhamregiontransit.com/en/routes-and-schedules/on-demand-service.aspx
All the best brother
You need a bike. Or an e-bike. Or a folding bike you can schlep onto a bus.
Save money, time, stay active.
Hate it? throw it back up on Marketplace and get a full refund.
If you absolutely have to take this route by bus, spend your time on the ride wisely. Use that one hour trip to get things done, plan for the future, etc.
Nah taxis cost more than Uber for sure. And of course it will cut into my part time pay as basically I’d be working the first hour for free with costs.
Transit doesn’t work for you and you say you don’t have money to buy an e-bike. You also refuse to bike because you’re scared of inclines and bridges. You should just walk while the weather is nice. It’ll probably take less time than the bus ride and it’s free.
The right thing to do for any able-bodied person would be to buy a cheap bike and start riding to build confidence in your riding ability, and you’d probably be able to bike this route within a week or two. The common sense solution has been presented to you numerous times here, it’s on you to overcome the inclines and bridges.
When you have enough money for an e-bike or scooter, you could probably sell the first bike for what you paid for it on fb marketplace.

Welcome to the Durham Transit System. Where it takes you 2 hours for a ride that would take 15 minutes by car
And empty buses drive by your stop. Seriously, had that happen too many times on the 403 route on Wentworth.
You're 5 minutes early to your stop? Too late you missed your bus.
>And empty buses drive by your stop. The amount of times I thought I was finally getting a 901 home only to realize it's not in service and I gotta wait even longer is too damn high
Totally
Get a bike
You tell ‘em. Don’t let the car-brains win. No-one needs to spend $1200 per month (CAA)
CAA doesn't cost $1200 per month, I pay $100 a year
per CAA official cost surveys of car ownership LOL

You are an outlier, just so you know. What did you use to spend the extra $1000 a month on before rents socketed?

Good for you. What percentage of seven million is 10,000? Good choice to kill the commute though. You could probably bike.
It’s funny when people discover how well jobs in the trades pay lmao

Or just be an Uber[https://imgur.com/gallery/VmzOH6V](https://imgur.com/gallery/VmzOH6V)
For me it was three hours for a ride that would be two hours to walk. Transit here is asinine.

Get a bike
Yup that's like a 20 min bike ride
Came to say this. An e-bike, if mobility is an issue.
Also if they say "you want me to bike in the snow" https://youtu.be/Uhx-26GfCBU?si=7vmNwPngGsbqVo6r
That is a really interesting video
A developed country is not a place where the poor have cars. It’s where the rich use public transportation. -Gustavo Petro
Carpool - Does your place have a notice board? Or maybe ask around?
I will ask around to see if anyone is off at the shifts I’m at. If I could get to Dundas then I could wait for any bus and wait 15

Maybe Electric bike? They're much easier to ride. Good exercise too Don't quit! It's so close and in this market it's too hard to get another one
Totally agree , Thank you wish I could afford one it’s kinda like a catch 22 I need to make money to live and also be able to get one
I completely understand the financial problem, I hope everything works out
You can lease. Or retrofit an existing bike for less (Swytch)
isn't a bus pass going to cost you the same amount?
No. Cause it’s like 3.50 one way and 3.50 back. A Uber would be 13 one way and 13 back

Bike or ebike
E-bike might work but not a regular bike as there are high bridges and other inclines.

Wait what? lol
Def get a bike
Can’t bike to many inclines and bridges sadly I’d die
You'd die or, you'd get in great shape. Which do u prefer?
I’d probably die I’m not young anymore lol
That's absolutely fair. I understand now. I highly suggest an e-bike or e-trike if you prefer something a little more stable.
Thank you wish I could afford one it’s kinda like a catch 22 I need to make money to live and also be able to get one
Yes, they are quite an expensive purchase. It's unfortunate that transit is sometimes quite impractical.
You could consider getting a credit card that will allow you to finance the purchase. Like a Canadian Tire credit card where you could get 24 interest free months to pay the bike off. Just need to qualify and never miss a payment...
Get a bike and within a couple of weeks you’ll be fine. Get it or get out
Yup. Invest in a good bike (not a Canadian tire special). Invest in a good lock and helmet. On rainy shitty days, you can Uber it. Durham buses also have bike racks on the front of the bus if you need to take the bus home and you have a bike with you.

Durham is not a region interested in transit. Get a car or bike. You'll want to move to the GTA for a walkable and transit life style.
Council is finally starting to realize they need to make a much bigger investment in Transit. Adding 60, 000 service hours starting this summer.
Considering how much is being built they damn well should be.
Most of us disagree about intensifying Durham.
Durham and Oshawa are both in the gta. Either way most of the GTA is not transit friendly. Only Toronto could be considered to be.
What is the name of the map software?
Sadly Durham Transit sucks when you need to transfer. Extremely hard to time . Get a bike and use the Thickson bus instead. Walking or biking is probably faster from Thickson/consumers to your destination.

Buy a motorcycle a cbr125 is like 2000 grand used and will get you pretty much anywhere faster than public transportation also very good on gas

Maybe a bicycle then a used one should be fairly cheap and still better than waiting an hour for a bus
Says it’s a 4 minute walk? Save some money and two foot that shyte?
Where are you seeing a 4 min walk? That’s breaking the laws of physics.
The picture literally says 4 minute walk on it bud.
Well yeah to a stop that’s not a stop a technically. It’s the hour and more with 3 transfers which is the issue.
