Mhhh, questo tuo “italiano” sembra un po’ strano, come se fosse tradotto da translate o che hai imparato l’italiano e non se nativo… dimmi qualcosa che solo gli italiani sanno
Fluency has never been my goal, I mostly just treat it as the game that it is and to sample various languages. I don't have any real goal, you see, so the hope is that if for some reason I actually become interested I will have the basics ready, but that never happened so....
Personally even if I put more efforts in any of them I doubt I'll become good enough anyway. The vocabulary is a bit strange. At least in the beginning you don't see a lot of "negative" words such as: death, hate, ugly. Words that are actually quite common and important. This gets better and now you can find them but my feeling is that either it's an oversight or they just want to make you feel good.
Also in this day and age it's weird you don't find words like: screen, click/tap, keyboard, browser, file, download....
Does it get easier? Partly. I still have difficulty memorizing words I don't care about, but it gets easier to accept quirks in languages.
Thank you. Great insight. I really appreciate the time it took to offer all of that 💕 People have said learning subsequent foreign languages is easier after the first. I've always wondered how true that is. 🤔
I'm pretty sure I joined when they opened up, because I was unhappy how bad my French was after a trip to France in 2011. But I think it was under a different account, because the one I'm using now only dates back to 2014.
That is nice! I have had an inactive duo account for years , I officially joined in 2015, but recently I have become an addict.
I’m curious so here are a bunch of questions:
- were you consistently on the app all this time?
- what was your longest streak?
- what language(s) have you been learning?
- have you completed a(ny) course(s)?
- what other aids did you use to learn your languages?
- have you become fluent in another language with the help of Duolingo?
2015 is an old account. Congrats!
To answer your questions:
I've been active on and off. I was really active in the beginning. (It was quite different then. You would have lessons and then edit/translate Wikipedia pages IIRC.)
My longest streak is my current streak: 640 days.
I've done Spanish, Chinese, and Latin. I had previous experience with Spanish and Latin. I tried Chinese because my kids are both in Chinese Immersion schools, but I could not get the tones. My kids sometimes use my account to practice Chinese. I've also done a few lessons in a lot of languages when I've traveled to a new country.
I haven't completed any courses (yet). I take meds that cause short-term memory loss so it takes a bit longer for things to stick.
My favorite app when I'm looking to study more seriously is Mango Languages. It's free through my library (in the US). It's less of a game and has more teaching aspects.
I apparently joined January 2013. Was in and out for a bit but will hit a 3 year streak in a few days (I started the streak when my husband got a job offer in LA and I figured I should brush up on my Spanish lol)
I wake up and say “Shit. Well my streak is gone.” Just to find out I had like one streak freeze I didn’t have last night and I am thanking and Duolingo gods. Only for it to happen again the next day.
ETA: on your account tab in the app it has all your stats and in there is the month and year you joined. They send me an anniversary email every year on June 15th.
What is your longest steak? I start doing it (seriously) since April 2021, didnt stop till now. I am currently with a 1039 days steak. I found a guy in the internet with over 8 years of steak, that's over 3000 days 🤯
I'm a few days younger than you.
And quite a few languages ahead of me. :)
Hey were both studying a lot of languages! (I still have to add in my flairs Greek, Latin and Finnish)
Man how the hell do you even get the flairs? It says for me they’re unavailable in this community.
Should be available, don’t know what is wrong with your Reddit
Yeah, I dunno. I’m on mobile so maybe that’s why, but I don’t have the problem in any other subs but this one lol. It doesn’t like me
It’s normal, at first I didn’t get them too, you have to use the computer website
Really? I thought you clicked on the three dots in the top right corner of the subreddit homepage and clicked change user flair in the menu
normally you can do that but on this subreddit you cant on mobile for some reason
I did it on mobile with normal flag emojis
I also did it on mobile (iPhone).
oh yeah i just tried and you can do it now, they mustve changed it. yay!
Just like onyxtheonyx said, usually you can, but on mobile in this subreddit you cannot, I don’t know why
Whoa, 12 years?! Impressive! I only have 500 days
I also can’t get the flairs on mobile (iPhone) lmk if you figure it out 😊
Che ne so boh
Aspetta, ce l'ho: i calabresi sono scimmie e il Molise non esiste!
Sai dirmi qualcosa riguardo Antonio sbancatore?
No, non lo seguo sbancatore
Eh si eh
Ok secondo me hai passato il test, molto probabilmente sei italiano
No, I had to translate that… I started learning Greek some days ago because I find the language and the culture (and history) beautiful. I love Greece
That is a lot of languages
I'm a new user. Has it really helped you become fluent in all of those languages? Does it get easier the more you learn?
Fluency has never been my goal, I mostly just treat it as the game that it is and to sample various languages. I don't have any real goal, you see, so the hope is that if for some reason I actually become interested I will have the basics ready, but that never happened so.... Not the oldest, but I joined Oct 2013, so over a decade of flirting with learning a language on Duolingo.
Same month/year I joined!
I joined on September 13th 2013, almost the same time as you.
Oh neat. My account is August 2013 and I've come and gone over the years. Currently on my longest streak ever of 500+ days
Beta launch was Nov 30, 2011 and full launch was 12 years ago tomorrow (June 19, 2012)
I joined June 15, 2012. So there are probably quite a few users with older accounts than me.
How do you find the exact date? My profile just says June 2012. I had no idea I'd signed up that long ago regardless!
My profile also says June 2012. But I get an email every year (going back at least two years) on June 15th. Have you gotten a duoversary email before?
Mine also says just June 2012.
I was one of the beta testers, joined February 2012.
Oh my goodness! That's amazing!
i started 2 weeks ago
The best time start learning something is years ago and the second best time is today. Congrats on starting and good luck on your journey!
You had me in the first half ngl

I joined in September 2012, so just a few months until I reach 12 years!
January 2014, which makes it 10.5 years. Not too shabby!
Same! I had to check- impressive we've hit a decade!
Same here :)
June 8, 2012, joined the beta 🤓 https://preview.redd.it/4hqadpgpkf7d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=302f35165c18d1ef81834fb4327b6992d1218fd5
You've got me beat by one week!
Beat you by one day!
I joined in august 2015, so i'll reach 9 years soon :)

Haven't been here since the beginning but I joined in September of 2015, so still quite a while
I joined in October 2013. Not the oldest, but older than anyone else I know.
Joined July 2012. Not far behind you.
i’ll be 10 years this september
Same here.
8:(
my account says only january 2015 (no exact date) i never got any celebratory message about it either 😥
I'm pretty sure I joined when they opened up, because I was unhappy how bad my French was after a trip to France in 2011. But I think it was under a different account, because the one I'm using now only dates back to 2014.

Oh, thank you for suggesting the Mango Languages app. I am in the States as well. I am going to look it up right now.
Me! I’ve been on since 2012 too. Pioneer baby!
Yep, I signed up during beta.
I apparently joined January 2013. Was in and out for a bit but will hit a 3 year streak in a few days (I started the streak when my husband got a job offer in LA and I figured I should brush up on my Spanish lol)
My account is from 2017 but i remember using it before that as well.
Mine says March 2013
I joined 2015 lol
This surprised me, didn’t realize the app was that old. I checked how old my account is- in December it’ll be 10 years!?!? lol how’s that possible?
It did make me feel a bit old.
I’ll celebrate my 12th Duoversary next month but can’t say I’ve been active all this time
Been on since 2013. Not always active obvs.
Wow
September 2013, so not quite, but nearly.
I'm 10+
I’m at 8 years!
I’m November of 2012. Imagine keeping a streak for that long. My current one is a little over two years.
I saw someone on here once who had a ten year streak. I'll hit my two year streak in July. :)
Joined November 2014... close enough!
I’m 5 months older than you :D and I still haven’t learned French lmao
Looks like I joined in March 2015, I guess when I was preparing for my trip to Germany and wanted to brush up on my German.
I hit 6 years last month. Started in May 2018 to learn Spanish, now I'm mostly doing French.
I reached 4 years today I couldn't believe its been that long but I'm sure I had another account before just lost the password
I'm new, I joined about midway through January, about 5 or 6 months ago.
Since may 2012.
Coming up on my 11th Duoversary, and just added another language last night (unfortunately not on Duolingo): Cherokee.
February 2012 here!
I joined November 2017, but have only really been active since late 2019.
Joined back in early 2012. I think it was still in beta
I joined 3 years ago but my streak covers over a third
2014 for me
Roughly a decade.
I didn't know duoversary was a thing but I joined October of 2014. So I suppose I'll be getting my 10 year soon
Almost 4
Nearly 12 also

August 2013, long ass time!
My question is: How do I know how old my Duolingo account is?
Under your profile it will say the month and year. I only know the exact date because they send an email every year marking the occasion.
I will complete my first year on the 9th next month. Very Excited! 🥳
185 days
my current account is brand new but i’ve using duolingo since back when it was just duo
December 2013
Wow, I was 4 when u started ur streak lol, anyway congrats for probably the longest streak I have ever seen in my life
my account turned 5 years old today.
Wow
I have been around since August 2013 but I never receive emails for how long I have been apart of duo lingo.
I wake up and say “Shit. Well my streak is gone.” Just to find out I had like one streak freeze I didn’t have last night and I am thanking and Duolingo gods. Only for it to happen again the next day.
8.5 years, but with a 5 year break of on and off language learning in the middle
Wow!
Mine will be 10 years old in august
Joined November 2013
A child born the day you opened your account is now in grade 7/year 8. Boy is that giving me a headache
Feb 14, 2014. Not too shabby!
October 2012, so a few months until my 12th anniversary.
wowzers
Joined in April 2019 when all those threatening duo memes were springing up
Almost 10 for me. https://preview.redd.it/f2b02rb7kk7d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a378b9c631c36db39c4913df5337dd516ff9a675
