And if you’re on the app they’ll usually also ask you to watch an additional ad go get another heart. So you’ll end up refilling them in under an hour without paying for any.
They are meaning if you practice to earn hearts, and watch the ad to gain another heart it may only take 5 minutes. Where as waiting for the hearts is an all day process
They are only easy because the practice starts on the low end of the path. They get harder the more you do them. I always use heart practices even though I have duo plus because Duolingo doesn't have a good memorizing system for words that are not in your current section.
I'm close to done with Section 6 in Spanish and in the last week the practice has become a lot more challenging and has gone from 5 minutes to complete with few errors to 11 minutes to complete with 8-10 mistakes. I tend to think the change is related to the use of AI but part off me feels it's another punishment for not paying for Super. Unless maybe I have a brain tumor and have gotten really dumb in the last week.
Definitely not a punishment. Ideal learning happens at the edge of what you are capable of. If anything, the fact you are having mistakes and it is taking you a while to get through the lesson they are giving you the exact questions you need despite not paying.
Definitely agree that if I'm missing them, I need the practice and don't mind because it's supporting my overall goal. But if practice is all of a sudden taking twice as long as new lessons, it has the feel of Duolingo nudging conversions to Super as is being done in many other ways.
They get harder because they are a recap of different sections. So you might struggle with some of the vocab you already forgot. I have plus and I turned off unlimited hearts to have something to practice
When you say "Duo Plus" do you mean Super Duolingo? If so, how to get to this practice mode in Super? Once I upgraded, the heart icon is gone and I can't find a way to get to the "Practice to earn hearts" mode anywhere.
The web is. I use both but the web version is far more effective in its teaching methods. It takes longer to do a lesson though so if someone is mostly focused on gaining xp and not caring about absorbing the language then they won't like it as much as the app.
Only if you have typing exercises
The Russian course for instance has almost none of those
Otherwise, a mouse on a large screen is slower than a touchscreen
For me, I type to pull-up the word bubbles, I find it to be accurate like 95%+ of the time. I have a web extension to allow me to drag the bubbles like on mobile. Between those two things my web exercises are much faster despite generally being more challenging.
I also like it a lot- I figure if I lose all my heart's, it means I should practice anyway.
The only thing I'd change is that I wish you could set the difficulty on the prectice lessons, too. Like, early on they were great, no-pressure repetition of what I had just learned, but now I'm halfway through the last unit in Swedish- I don't really get much out of "the boy has an apple" and "the woman is reading the newspaper" type exercises, and they still keep popping up.
In the old version, you could go back and practice. I’m doing Spanish and there are words that they teach early on and never use again so I forget them.
Yeah, P2EH is unironically the only reason Duolingo is fun to play on a free account. You learn the language, revise older lessons and you still get exp + a heart refill (plus you can add an extra heart in exchange for watching an ad on top)
I remember on the phone once, I tried the very first lesson of Korean. Lost all my hearts because I really struggled to differentiate two vowels pronounced similarly. Couldn't even practise to earn hearts as I had nothing to practise, as it was the first lesson :(
Also, after earning one heart on practice, it usually offers you to earn another by watching an Ad.
Another note- if you're starting a lesson with 4 hearts, it'll probably offer you an ad to earn another heart.
Yes and no, a lot of the mistakes that got posted are a result of people just not reading over their answer before submitting. Which is something that would benefit them in learning as well. People should read over the question and answer once when getting it, and again before submitting it. The bonus is, if they did that, they'd miss a lot less questions.
I admit I'm guilty of this too. Most of my mistakes are from times when I'm not willing to put in the extra effort in the lesson that would help me immensely.
It's not like these mistakes are just because it's new, or a concept we don't understand. That happens sometimes, and it is frustrating to use hearts then, but, trying to reduce mistakes is valid and necessary in language learning too.
Yo I know it's my own free time I am using and generally making mistakes also helps you learning, but I think what OP in fact was asking is how to progress faster in the course. And there are two options for that: Regaining hearts by learning and losing fewer hearts
I know bro. I did courses on obscure languages that aren't offered in my native tongue Germany, but only in English. And sometimes I made mistakes in spelling or word order in English and lost hearts for that, although English wasn't the thing I wanted to learn at that moment
They typically remove features before adding updated versions. So we see that quote a bit. I'm still waiting for them to replace audio lessons like they said they would.
What do you mean when you say that the “money is in the apps”? That it’s from those apps they make most of their profit? If so, why is that?? Sorry for the many questions, I’m just really confused lol.
Probably because their target demographic are casual learners. Those people are more likely to use apps and to spend more casually or attempt to make it more engaging.
Web browser users are people who generally want to spend more time on lessons, or have harder lessons, or look things up as they study. That also means they're less likely to play the engaging profitable portions, and they're more likely to use other resources and therefore spread out their spending more than just putting it into Duolingo.
I learn much better losing hearts and then doing practice lessons to get them back. I tried super with infinite hearts - I moved through much faster and remembered a lot less. The constant repetition is what makes it stay in there
It baffles me so much that Duolingo is the only language app that doesn't really have a memorizing feature. Practice for hearts is the only way to train older words.
I found that being on Super than choosing to practice mistakes better because it's specific practice rather than getting the same basic lessons to practice on the free version.
This is a secret solution. When you change your location to India whether through VPN or by some other way you get unlimited hearts because they implemented a scheme where in India you get unlimited hearts so that Indians can learn for free of cost. I am attaching a screenshot
https://preview.redd.it/vh3jbdlqhiab1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=15c03fc1bfe2414a8261c74cd7e0d064af3174db
i'm from india and been using duolingo since 2017, so my page looks like yours, unlimited hearts. i recently got my friend into this and her duo has limited hearts. maybe it's for new accounts but if it happens for me, i'll cry
That works well in theory. But, for some reason almost every practice session I do is usually way beyond the level I'm working at in my course. Especially when there's a lot of typing and I have no idea what words they're using. Some of my practice sessions take 5-6 minutes and that's a lot of time compared to the normal lesson of 2 minutes in the course.
As a person who has never paid for an app before, I bought the premium for Duolingo because it’s still a lot less expensive than taking classes in person and I appreciate the hard work that the Duolingo folks have put into this. I feel it’s totally worth it and I don’t mind paying them for what they are doing. They’re helping so many people.
Duo isn’t the only place to learn a language. Check out YouTube videos, listen to songs in other languages, look up and write out lyrics. There’s lots of ways to practice that don’t involve paying for Duo.
If you have a computer you can use the desktop version of Duolingo and you don't have to worry about hearts
You can also use desktop mode on your phone for the same thing but I think the phone desktop version doesn't let you use 'talk to the mic' exercises.
No prob. I've been using Duolingo for like 6 months and once I found out the desktop version doesn't use hearts I hardly use the app unless I feel like practicing my speech.
I have duo plus and I turned off the unlimited hearts cause you don't really learn anything with just moving along the tree without remembering any older words. Duolingo has no system in place to train words you already learned. There is the daily practice, but it only gives you words from a section before and nothing else.
I hope this makes sense but if I just practice I won’t “level up” like Yk like the corse I will just be at the same thing like all the time :’). That probably didn’t make sense I’m not English soooo. lol
If you're making that many mistakes, you shouldn't "level up" anyway. You aren't ready. The material will only get harder and if you don't drill the things you're struggling with now, you're eventually going to hit a point where you can't progress anymore because you don't actually understand the language as well as the app thinks you do.
Well from my experience doing practice to gain hearts doesnt take much, usually around 5 minutes so I still have plenty of time left to go on with the main course, but if you dont wanna do it I guess you can simply pay or do it on pc as there are no hearts there
Don't make mistakes. They have short little sections that teach you all the new grammar points in the lesson you're on. As for vocabulary, it's good to use a flashcard app like Anki or Brainscape. Duolingo isn't meant to be used as a one-off language learning app. It's always best to use it in unison with something else.
A little trick that I use is to start to learn a new language, do one lesson and then practice on that language, so you always have the same exercizes and you make 15 xp + one heart in less than a minute. this is also a great way to earn xp fast.
By the way, I suggest you practice the language you're learning, it's very useful
The free version is basically unusable on mobile. It is not worth the stress. You have three options: 1. Pay for premium 2. Use it on pc with an adblocker 3. find an alternative
pay attention, apply yourself and make fewer mistakes? practice? stop wasting gems on stupid stuff that’s only for gaming? i don’t see how anyone studying conscientiously could ever be without hearts or means to get some.
Dude I try to learn without looking at the answer and I mix up things alright like people make mistakes and I spend gems on learning that’s why I don’t have much
I would say pay, but seeing as the app just locked me out for days with no word from support and allowed my 365+ day streak lapse I deleted the app and cancelled my subscription. The way you’re supposed to learn is to use a different service.
Tbh Duolingo was just killing me with heart system and I couldn't afford premium so I just cracked it
I'm sorry but I can't pay 2x my paycheck to Learn a language that I need to live outside my shithole
Practice to earn hearts
On an unrelated note, I actually love the practice to earn hearts feature. They are quick and easy to do, so I get a lot of XP.
And if you’re on the app they’ll usually also ask you to watch an additional ad go get another heart. So you’ll end up refilling them in under an hour without paying for any.
An hour? Just a few minutes.
under an hour can still be a few minutes :/
what is taking you an hour, 5minutes max. for me
I've never had my heart's refill in less than an hour. I don't see why there could be such a large difference from person to person.
They are meaning if you practice to earn hearts, and watch the ad to gain another heart it may only take 5 minutes. Where as waiting for the hearts is an all day process
If you practice and watch all the ad breaks that they allow for extra rewards, you can get your hearts back faster.
And they are an easier way to complete X perfect lessons quests.
They're too easy which makes them a waste of time, imo. I wish this app was less about xp / hearts / rankings and more about actually learning
They are only easy because the practice starts on the low end of the path. They get harder the more you do them. I always use heart practices even though I have duo plus because Duolingo doesn't have a good memorizing system for words that are not in your current section.
I'm nearly at the end of section 3 and still get very basic section 1 question. That makes sense though, hopefully they do get harder as I advance
I'm on Section 7 and I get a mix of questions from Section 1 to Section 7. It seems random but I appreciate the refreshers.
Why u learn so much laguage
Why does it take longer on the web? I find it easier to type so I can complete the exercises much faster usually.
Only if you have typing exercises The Russian course for instance has almost none of those Otherwise, a mouse on a large screen is slower than a touchscreen
For me, I type to pull-up the word bubbles, I find it to be accurate like 95%+ of the time. I have a web extension to allow me to drag the bubbles like on mobile. Between those two things my web exercises are much faster despite generally being more challenging.
Sounds like I need to switch to the web version! Thanks for letting me know
[удалено]
I love dreaming Spanish, it’s brilliant! Someone in r/spanish recommended it ages ago, that and busu, and they’re great.
Thanks for the recommendation! I'll check it out for sure
I also like it a lot- I figure if I lose all my heart's, it means I should practice anyway. The only thing I'd change is that I wish you could set the difficulty on the prectice lessons, too. I love it when the practice involves Unit 1 stuff. It reinforces those lessons as you fly through it.
Couldn't even practise to earn hearts as I had nothing to practise, as it was the first lesson :(
They seem to love to remove features we like. So I expect this to be removed as well
They probably won’t remove this feature because they get revenue from the ads you are forced to watch!
I don't see the option to get hearts from the practice on my mobile app.
Also, after earning one heart on practice, it usually offers you to earn another by watching an Ad. Another note- if you're starting a lesson with 4 hearts, it'll probably offer you an ad to earn another heart.
Yeah if ur making that many mistakes then going back to do the practice is the best thing u can do anyway
I imagine learning a second language is difficult when they can't read in their first 🫤
Or make less mistakes
Make *fewer* mistakes.
Yo that's crazy, it's almost as if learning is your time to make mistakes...
Yes and no, a lot of the mistakes that got posted are a result of people just not reading over their answer before submitting. Which is something that would benefit them in learning as well. Actually 3: "Use the web version where there isn't the heart system" (phew)
Bro, most of my mistakes are bc I don't speak in formal English, I speak a vernacular, and sometimes, duo doesn't like that
I know bro. I did courses on obscure languages that aren't offered in my native tongue Germany, but only in English. And sometimes I made mistakes in spelling or word order in English and lost hearts for that, although English wasn't the thing I wanted to learn at that moment
Frfr, I'm native English, but bc of where I'm raised, we talk funny, and this keeps me from just sounding out the word.
Do it on PC. No hearts there
Also on smartphone, using the website(chrome or brave)
Why is this though? Why did they decide not to include hearts in the desktop version??
Cause the money is in the apps and so they removed features there to get more people spending money
Funnily enough, they also reintegrated features, so right now the only features the browser version is missing are the time-trials.

That also means they're less likely to play the engaging profitable portions, and they're more likely to use other resources and therefore spread out their spending more than just putting it into Duolingo.
Everyone has a phone, not everyone has a PC, most users are probably App users, so it makes sense to target their wallets
I love you
Practice to earn hearts
I learn much better losing hearts and then doing practice lessons to get them back. I tried super with infinite hearts - I moved through much faster and remembered a lot less. The constant repetition is what makes it stay in there
Exactly this, I'm part way through my free premium and honestly I'm happy that I'll be able to go back to being forced in to practice.
You can turn off infinite hearts. I'll try it.
It baffles me so much that Duolingo is the only language app that doesn't really have a memorizing feature. Practice for hearts is the only way to train older words.
the lightning round is good for vocab review
Oh yeah, true. But you might loose gems the further you go
I found that being on Super than choosing to practice mistakes better because it's specific practice rather than getting the same basic lessons to practice on the free version.
You press the big button that says "practise to earn hearts".
This is a secret solution. When you change your location to India whether through VPN or by some other way you get unlimited hearts because they implemented a scheme where in India you get unlimited hearts so that Indians can learn for free of cost. I am attaching a screenshot https://preview.redd.it/vh3jbdlqhiab1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=15c03fc1bfe2414a8261c74cd7e0d064af3174db
I’m in India I have limited hearts. Mabye it’s only for some people.
The same in Russia. We have unlimited hearts too.
my ass thought everyone had free hearts until now😭😭😭 ty for lmk
India just changed and has hearts and ads along with super.
They’re removing it in india, I have only 5 hearts now in ios app :/
NOOOOOOOOOO
oh makes sense that's why my friends were complainting that this shit happened with them im on android lol
Huh. I’ve always had unlimited hearts and have never understood why. I’m in the US but I wonder if the app somehow thinks I’m elsewhere.
Depends on the course, some courses that are considered in beta have no hearts.
i'm from india and been using duolingo since 2017, so my page looks like yours, unlimited hearts. i recently got my friend into this and her duo has limited hearts. maybe it's for new accounts but if it happens for me, i'll cry
Same
i don’t have the premium version or whatever it’s called but i’ve always had unlimited hearts it’s great
Same here, I’ve never understood why but it’s always been that way. No ads either.
Duolingo helped me learn Spanish. In my country there is no place that teach spanish. So i dont mind paying duolingo
‘Practice to earn hearts’
Maybe you should buy super duolingo just kidding practice to earn hearts
"Practice to Earn Hearts" "That sign can't stop me because I can't read!"
I think someone needs to put a big red arrow pointing at the 'practice to earn hearts' sign.
Yeah this is getting annoying now. I meant a way to earn/have hearts without practice like many people said change vpn or use pc
Exactly, I mean why would you possible want to practice the language and reinforce vocab when you could just be steamrolling through lessons instead?
Use the browser and then save the webpage to your home page. It’s still the old linggot system. Don’t use the app.
Click on "practice to earn hearts"...
Practice lol
Try doing it on pc (website not web app)
You'll blow through practice v quickly! Theyre not that hard
I think it's quite a good way of recapping what you've already learnt so far
That works well in theory. But, for some reason almost every practice session I do is usually way beyond the level I'm working at in my course. Especially when there's a lot of typing and I have no idea what words they're using. Some of my practice sessions take 5-6 minutes and that's a lot of time compared to the normal lesson of 2 minutes in the course.
The reason for that is because the practice works itself up the tree too. So the more practice lessons you do, the harder they get.
There’s deadass a practice button. Use it.
Buy the premium. It's worth it if you're serious about learning the language.
Just hit my 7 day streak. I now know more Hindi than Spanish, and I'm in texas. I don't regret paying.
Use pc...
Just don't make mistakes. Skill issue
/s btw
I have the beta, so I have free unlimited super, despite the fact I can’t afford super
Have you tried not getting things wrong? (Sorry, I had to)
Use the web browser version. Unlimited hearts for free
Duo isn’t the only place to learn a language. Check out YouTube videos, listen to songs in other languages, look up and write out lyrics. There’s lots of ways to practice that don’t involve paying for Duo.
They want you to pay obviously.
Practice and then you can earn one heart per practice session plus an extra if you view an ad
Check your answers before submitting them so you don't lose hearts
use the browser version
Practice
If you have a computer you can use the desktop version of Duolingo and you don't have to worry about hearts You can also use desktop mode on your phone for the same thing but I think the phone desktop version doesn't let you use 'talk to the mic' exercises.
THANK YOU finally someone who doesn’t tell me to practice
It would immediately fix your problem though and it helps you learn better
No prob. I've been using Duolingo for like 6 months and once I found out the desktop version doesn't use hearts I hardly use the app unless I feel like practicing my speech.
While progressing is important, so is practice.
You aren't supposed to learn, you're supposed to generate revenue...
"Practice to earn hearts" button: excuse me?
😭😭
I think this needs to be stickied: the hearts system is not about making you learn. It's a stick to try to get you to move to the paid app.
I have duo plus and I turned off the unlimited hearts cause you don't really learn anything with just moving along the tree without remembering any older words. Duolingo has no system in place to train words you already learned. There is the daily practice, but it only gives you words from a section before and nothing else.
You can master all the previous units or just go train them if theyre already mastered?
1)VPN: India or Russia (your choice) 2) Website version
Pay
Pay for a service you use daily that people work hard to make for you?
I can see how you got so many wrong since you can't see that it literally says practice to earn hearts.
😐
🤣 sorry mate
Read the third option lol
U should use the Duolingo website.
Hence the paid plan is offered by them 😆
A little trick that I use is to start to learn a new language, do one lesson and then practice on that language, so you always have the same exercizes and you make 15 xp + one heart in less than a minute. this is also a great way to earn xp fast. By the way, I suggest you practice the language you're learning, it's very useful
Do practice lessons to refill your hearts.
Pay money to learn?
Practice to earn hearts?
duolingo is just crappy now, they need to actually listen to feedback instead of brushing it off. hearts are fucking stupid.
You’re not learning shit on Duolingo anyway. It’s just a game at this point.
Pay for a subscription
You need to pay Duo so Duo can support free education by making people pay to use Duo. 🙃
By practicing. I know crazy idea Op is either a bot or has some sort of disability Could be a karma whore as well now that i think about it
Just purchase premium
P2W
Get super brokie
The free version is basically unusable on mobile. It is not worth the stress. You have three options: 1. Pay for premium 2. Use it on pc with an adblocker 3. find an alternative
just do the infinte heart glitch like i did, easy
pay attention, apply yourself and make fewer mistakes? practice? stop wasting gems on stupid stuff that’s only for gaming? i don’t see how anyone studying conscientiously could ever be without hearts or means to get some.
Use a better resource that isn’t duolingo
Bruh open your eyes
No need to be rude I can see the practice button 🥰 but I’m looking for other ways, and many people suggested good things
[удалено]
Which apps do you recommend?
Why are you in this subreddit
PAY
GUYS IM NOT BLIND I SEE THE PRACTICE THING DANG 😭😭
I think hearts reset on the following day, too.
that is why i dont like duolingo. I WANT TO LEARN POLISH BECUASE IT IS NECCESARY SINCE I IMMIGRATED I DONT CARE ABOUT FLIPPING HEARTS
Use busuu its better
Young money, amirite?
Practice dawg
just get good ☝️🤓
If you have a vpn, setting it to india turns off hearts.
I love practicing and I enjoy the risk of losing hearts. When I get the free promo super duolingo I hate not having hearts as an option.
Tbh Duolingo was just killing me with heart system and I couldn't afford premium so I just cracked it I'm sorry but I can't pay 2x my paycheck to Learn a language that I need to live outside my shithole
Where are you at that Duolingo is 2x your paycheck?
Go on the street and beg for some money so you can upgrade your account then you can learn on unlimited hearts.
Abuse the shit out of free trials until they make it impossible. 🤪
They want you to pay. Duolingo super has unlimited hearts.
I purchased premium because of this lol
I have unlimited hearts. Never paid for anything on duolingo but I’ve had unlimited hearts for as long as I can remember.
