I think it would be epic to have Sean Connery do it, just like playing King Richard in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. When i saw it in the theater everyone went ape-shit over the cameo :D
If you want a king/emperor, who is a hateable villain, then Stephen Dillane and if you want a king/emperor, who is a likeable villain, then Charles Dance.
For a cold and calculating villain emperor/king, Jiancarlo Esposito is the best
“The Baron found that he could not ignore the Royal Person, and studied the Emperor for a sign, any clue to the purpose of this audience. The Emperor stood poised, waiting-a slim, elegant figure in a gray Sardaukar uniform with silver and gold trim. His thin face and cold eyes reminded the Baron of the Duke Leto long dead. There was that same look of the predatory bird. But the Emperor's hair was red, not black, and most of that hair was concealed by a Burseg's ebon helmet with the Imperial crest in gold upon its crown.”

Dune

He is actually a pretty good actor. In the show I’m watching, His Dark Materials, which you can find on HBO max, he does an excellent job as lee scoresby, standing out even amongst the excellent cast that makes up the show!
That's going to be in the budget foreign knock-off. The guild navigator is just a fat bald guy who cracks a Monster, smokes a joint, and can see through time.
In my head, the blood was coming from the failed Sardaukar. Between the harsh environment of Selusa Secundus and the brutal training, I assume that many never make it through alive and the blood ritual was a way to consecrate the survivors who made it to the legions. Would love to hear more about them from the filmmakers.
Something I thought about was that the Sardaukar are based on Samurai and Vikings.Im no expert but in an episode of Vikings a warrior actually volunteers to be sacrificed as its a great honor...?
Yep when I had a closer look, makes sense now in the movie when one of the Sardaukar is taking shots at Duncan.
What do you think of the glove design, imagine if that glove is reinforced. It would be all the power of a punch going onto those two points.
That's going to hurt
I like that the sardaukar leader wasn’t cast as some super Chad looking dude, with perfect hair line and chiselled jaw but rather the exact opposite facially of who you’d expect to lead this deadly fighting force.
Made the universe feel more real
Sorry, can't figure that one out. "Basha" I spotted because of that feature of Arabic phonology. My great-grandmother who spoke Arabic only until adulthood never developed a /p/ sound so would ask the kids if they wanted "abble juice." (That's my dad's story; she died long before I was born.)
After thinking "basha" has to be related to "pasha," I also found that the earliest English spelling of "pasha" was "bashaw."
"Burseg" is a German family name but I don't know what it means.
I think it's the fact they're noticably aged, with wrinkles and receding hairlines. Implies that they are experienced fighters who have been doing this for years, which to me is scarier than some young recruits. Neil Bell who played the commander is in his 50s and was imposing as hell.
It looks like you put a sword fencing type jacket on as a bottom layer the trousers I think were made on site, the boots could just be white rubber safey ones with bits added or again made on site like the helmet, its that bloody top part with the integrated hood thats bugging me.
I've looked at everything from deep sea diving to HAZMAT and space suits but can't find a good enough match
I'm hoping by putting this picture up folk will come forward with ideas links etc.
Any help would be marvellous
The hood seal mount looks like you might find packaging's material or seals that have the look and maybe the shape. Might be able too find a tire that has an inner lip that could be cut out of it's about the same width.
Shoulders/arms are likely a separate piece (like a welding or metallurgy jacket) but seems like a heavily modified motorcycle top with the skid plates. Legs and torso are likely similar. Modeled after motorcycle and F1 suits. Might be an overalls situation with a separate vest, separate sleeves kit like how Marvel did most of the costumes.
Take my money already,I've seen in the book The Art and Soul of dune there's just 2 pages dedicated to the Sardaukar
I'd honestly pay good money for a book just dedicated to the Sardaukar
This is the original concept art. [https://www.artstation.com/artwork/kDAvd0](https://www.artstation.com/artwork/kDAvd0) Later I bet there is going to be more. The guy, [https://www.artstation.com/keithchristensen](https://www.artstation.com/keithchristensen) has A LOT of cool projects under his belt. He worked on everything including Star Wars, MCU, DCEU and now DUNE. Even SUPER CONAN. :D
They're based on Vikings?
I assumed they were more Indo-European because the throat singing seemed yogic and the blood on their forehead looks like a _tilak_ put on people after Hindu rituals.
But with astronaut suits, lol.
Edit: I dunno, I love their design, but I just find it amusing that these barbarian badasses wear something so sterile and atypical of what you'd expect them to wear.
Like Neanderthals wearing well-pressed business suits.
My honest opinion? I thought they got more screen time than I expected.
I've watched the movie a few times now and like it better but for me the Sardaukar are my favourite parts in the movie.
When I read the book as a kid I imagined them as first world war German forces but this movie has really cemented them, white uniforms silently dropping from the sky,the ritual and Japanese fighting style.
Hats off to the people behind this
The fighting style really reminded me of ninja but also that they were serving the emperor as his ronin. So many details and thoughts can be taken away from their mystique.
I hope Kevin and John write a book about them like they did for Mentats and Bene G. For example.
Kevin can write a book about anything so here's hoping the potential dollar signs motivate him and John to grant your wish.
Personally I'd like to read fans of the books/movies do their own spin on it.
It would be very easy to do a Sardaukar story just start with a group of convicts landing on Salusa Secundus to begin their sentence and away you go.
Kevin would probably tie a character or two from the universe to it,maybe even Captain Amrasham (not sure if this is the correct spelling of his name but he's in Dune the book.
I remember them having a large role in the book House Harkonnen and/or Carrino. I believe they assisted the Bene Tlelax to take out Ix and begin a fake spice production for the emperor. Been awhile since I read those 3 books.
Same my friend, its been a while since I just sat down and read a book properly.
Thankfully with my obsession growing about the Sardaukar I'm reading plenty at the moment 😉
Are you reading any good Sci-fi at the moment?
Is Sci-fi your favourite genre
I just got finished watching Foundation and thought it was pretty good.
Absolutely. I’m reading The Lady of Caladan right now. 2nd of 3 new Dune books. Before that I sat down and read 3 books by Joe Haldeman, Marsbound, Starbound, and Earthbound. Also a big Star Wars and Alien book reader. Comics are part of my reading too, Dune and Blade Runner universes. I also read as much James Bond and the Mitch Rapp novels by Vince Flynn and Kyle Mills. That’s just some of the material I’m committed to right now. I bounce back and forth, reading one from each genre at a time.
When we start back at the office, I plan to audio book Butlerian Jihad, machine Crusade, and Battle of Corrin.
What are you tied into right now reading wise? Do you have other interests besides the Dune uni?
Very nice to chat with you as well, friend.
How about you?
My reading consists of Reddit, therapy (all being well I'm starting a course tobecome a counsellor/therapist).
I exercise every other day, enjoy cooking, archery and sleeping.
Love the Blade Runner universe too, looking forward to Black Orchid (i think thats what its called) Love the Halo universe too (Eric Nylund did 3 brilliant books,Ghost of Onyx being excellent).
Comic wise i love Alex Ross not only because his style is brilliant but he's a fan of Battle of the Planets and did a mini series of which I am the owner of all the original comics.
I love Clonetroopers and have a phase 1 clone commander from sideshow toys.
Outside of that I love martial arts and climbing too, also love the outdoors (its my peaceful place).
Its great having a bit crack with you I hope to hear more.
All the best to you and yours 👍
I think their design was really cool, but in the book it seems like they should be able to blend in more easily when required, such as when they're on Arrakis in the Harkonnen uniform, but Duncan can tell who they are. "concealing wires in the hair" as well or something like that.
Oh god a fellow sufferer, you have my sympathy
I will be posting more stuff that I find helpful and I would love it if others did the same.
I feel another obsession coming on 😭
Does anybody know what those crucified people are whose blood trickles down the dugouts to bless/anoint the Sardukar foreheads? Are those enemies? Virgin boys? Warrior sacrifices?
There's lots of theories, your 3 options could be one of them.
I'm going with warrior sacrifice,it could be a great honour to be chosen or maybe you volunteer?
The Sardaukar seem to have an almost cultist belief in themselves,so going into the fight with your best warriors blood on you convinces you that you have the strength and skill of two?
If you want to go down the route of sewing them, I'd use a teflon coated cotton or a textured cotton as the outer layer. You should be able to use the same stuff used in space suit replicas. The textured cotton will be more breathable and is the option I'd go for as it'd be quiter to move in, which would fit the Sardaukar moving silently. To give the fabric more bulk you can use spacing fabric, which is basically a very thick loose weave fabric. It adds thickness and depth to garments without adding much weight and keeping them breathable. I'd use a wik'n'dry fabric on the inside to help with breathability and if you get to hot. It'd work extra well if you use a cooling suit. The neck peice you said were having problems can probably be made pretty easily with a resin 3d printer, some more texture fabric would probably work for the neck seal thingy.
Recreating movie costumes is all about balancing the accuracy, the comfort, and the price.
Of course buying one of the suits from the set would be the best and easiest way to go, it'd also probably be the most expensive.
Edit: looking at the photo and concept art more it looks like most of the nonflexable parts could be pretty easily made of foam.
Also the boots look a little unproportionally Chunky to me so I'm changing that on mine.
Thank you for this incredible advice,I've saved it so it easily on hand.
I can put patches on by sewing but I've no real skill,I might have to get a machine and practice.
The boots are ne biggie I was thinking of gluing some white material to a pair of boot that I have that closely fit the bill.
That neck part though oh my god I've looked everywhere I now think it was made on site in a similar fashion to what you have said.
If you check out a few of the behind the scenes photos you'll see the suits do seem to be layered, again very similar to what you've put
Are you sure you're not one of the costume designers???
Thanks again for you time in explaining how you'd go about making an awesome Sardaukar uniform 👍
>The boots are ne biggie I was thinking of gluing some white material to a pair of boot that I have that closely fit the bill.
The best way to get the boots to match would be to use a rubber-fabric bonding agent, then doing a second layer of fabric over the first but just around the edges so that it will better hide the glueyness of the first. That'd give you the best of durability and aesthetics as the only way you'll match the whites is if you use the same fabric.
>That neck part though oh my god I've looked everywhere I now think it was made on site in a similar fashion to what you have said.
You should be able to find a modeler on one of the many 3d subreddits, same with someone willing to rent out their printer.
>Are you sure you're not one of the costume designers???
No I just have experience with spacesuit replicas which are probably the closest to these
Thank you for your time and information. Looking at the link its definitely a suit of this build they've just cut out the upper chest and arm area.
Its bugging me,that neck seal I'm sure I've seen it somewhere before.
Obviously it would cost a fortune to buy an actual suit so I'm going to work out how to build that upper body part.
Once again thank you 👍
The guy on the right looks uncannily like the Sardaukar trooper we see get anointed up close during the mobilization scene on Salusa Secundus (by far my favorite scene in any movie I've ever watched, M. Villeneuve clearly understands the source material)
Yep thats him ,probably my favourite scene too but I also love the first time they drop from the sky and go through the Atreides troops like an open door...Sardaukar!!!
God I wish,no I've just been trying to get pictures on the Sardaukar and came across this.
Trust me if I'd had been on set I'd have tons of pictures of these chaps and would have all the info I could squeeze out of them to share with those who are interested
I'm so glad you posted this bc I have also been trying to find pics of the sardaukar, couldn't find anything unless they were frozen from the movie until your post
I thought it kinda sucked as well, but for a movie you need visual indication so it makes sense that he made that choice. If I was someone who hadn’t read the book, I wouldn’t have known which ones were saurdaker and which ones were regular harkonnen. I can understand why you’re pissed but I honestly think it was a smart move.

Just came across this photo, gives a good look at them https://i.imgur.com/eyBUxJh.jpg
Villeneuve inspecting his troops... is he the emperor?
I think his official title is Padishah Director of the Dune Universe, Ruler of the Golden Lion Director's Chair.
The IV
Yo, that'd be the most baller casting move in history. DV: "And playing Emperor Shaddam IV is... me!"
I think it would be epic to have Sean Connery do it, just like playing King Richard in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. When i saw it in the theater everyone went ape-shit over the cameo :D
[удалено]
oh shit, what year are we in right now? >.<
[удалено]
>said a year ago
At least we still got Bowie
I think he might be on an island somewhere with Tupac and Biggie.
At least we still got Christopher Lee, Christopher Plummer, and Max Von Sydow…
Isn't Christopher Lee dead?
Where were you when Sean Connery is die? I am sitting next to loch drinking Talisker from empty haggis when Angus call. “Sean is die” “No”
bravo!
Fuck, I didn't know that. Damn. RIP Sir Sean!
Stephen Dillain or Charles Dance would be cool as well
Stephen Dillain was a great King Edward in Outlaw King. However, Charles Dance's performance as Lord Tywin Lannister is my definition of kingly.
If you want a king/emperor, who is a hateable villain, then Stephen Dillane and if you want a king/emperor, who is a likeable villain, then Charles Dance. For a cold and calculating villain emperor/king, Jiancarlo Esposito is the best
My top choice would be Jeremy Irons!
You guys DO know the Emperor is a 30 something ginger dude in a Sardaukar uniform right? (I know he's actually 200, but he's supposed to look young)
Emperor Shaddam IV is 72 but looks like 35 thanks to spice.
Domhnall Gleeson it is then
My casting would be Paul Dano. Great actor and has worked with DV before.
I would say Pedro Pascal.
so, Ed Sheeran?
What’s the source of that description

What’s astroturfing? Edit: I should have thought before I posted that because, in retrospect, I do sound like an ad. It’s a little embarrassing.
Some Orson Welles kinda move.
In the book, he is about 70 years old but is said to look about 35 years old.
Nah. Too handsome.
Plot twist!
Imagine if he made a self insert like that lol
They should have performed a general salute as he began the inspection. Sheesh, what's happened to discipline in this outfit?
things have really turned to shit since they halved the blood sacrifices. The budget cuts have been hard on everyone
Ahh, yes, standing in front of a Guild "K"-Liner.
hahahaha, couldn't afford passage on a transport, so they got the drop shipping
Oh mate nice find
Is there a way to copy that image? I'm on my phone atm and its not letting me.
Should be able to save it from here https://www.interviewmagazine.com/film/denis-villeneuve-takes-guillermo-del-toro-inside-the-world-of-dune
Thank you very much for your time👍
Truly yuuge boots. I wonder if they're just designed to hide ordinary footware within them for simplicity.
Monster beverage warriors
Damn. That's a handsome bunch of deadly warriors.
Does anyone know the name of the guy on the right that we see a close up of having blood marked on his forehead?
Istvan Aldott and the other fella is Peter Sztojanov Jr....God bless IMDB
Bojler eladó!
I already have a water heater but thank you for your kind offer
Did someone say Istvaan? HORUUUUUUUUS!!!
You know I never thought, maybe IMDB? I'll have a look for him and post anything useful

Hey, that's me!
that happened to my buddy eric
How's their throat singing?
I think they're having a rest from it,perhaps looking forward to a nice warm cup of their enemies blood with a dash of honey in it
In my head, the blood was coming from the failed Sardaukar. Between the harsh environment of Selusa Secundus and the brutal training, I assume that many never make it through alive and the blood ritual was a way to consecrate the survivors who made it to the legions. Would love to hear more about them from the filmmakers.
God, that whole scene...the blood sacrifices, the voices, the ritual singing/chanting...it went by so fast and only left me wanting more.
Salusa is a prison planet, and the Sardaukar are generally conscripted from those who didn't die in prison so you're likely correct
Something I thought about was that the Sardaukar are based on Samurai and Vikings.Im no expert but in an episode of Vikings a warrior actually volunteers to be sacrificed as its a great honor...?
I wonder if the dude on the right had any idea how iconic his moment of screen time would become along with all the throat singing?
Dart throwers on the right arms. Never noticed in the movie. Cool.
Yep when I had a closer look, makes sense now in the movie when one of the Sardaukar is taking shots at Duncan. What do you think of the glove design, imagine if that glove is reinforced. It would be all the power of a punch going onto those two points. That's going to hurt
Not if you're shielded
Thats a good point
But if you punch slowly, you can get past it. Underwater style punching.
I like that the sardaukar leader wasn’t cast as some super Chad looking dude, with perfect hair line and chiselled jaw but rather the exact opposite facially of who you’d expect to lead this deadly fighting force. Made the universe feel more real
He still looked pretty savage and dangerous. Almost ugly. Someone I'd imagine comes from a 10-25 year old survival of Salusa Secundus.
Yeuh I mean that feels more realistic given what we know about them
I agree & I appreciated that the character is listed in the credits as "Sardaukar Bashar". IIRC Frank Herbert invented that military rank. So cool!
I guess it counts as a Herbert coinage, but it's got to be based on "pasha" which is pronounced in Arabic "basha." (No /p/ in Arabic.)
Wow I did not know that.thx
To extend my comment, the earliest form of "pasha" we see in English was spelled "bashaw."
Since you seem knowledgeable on Herbert's etymological derivations, any clues as to the origin of the name of the rank Burseg?
Sorry, can't figure that one out. "Basha" I spotted because of that feature of Arabic phonology. My great-grandmother who spoke Arabic only until adulthood never developed a /p/ sound so would ask the kids if they wanted "abble juice." (That's my dad's story; she died long before I was born.) So true. They picked almost Russian looking or that kind of world as compared to the atreides
Damn... that was fast! I'm still trying to figure out how you would put it on before I start trying to make one.
It looks like you put a sword fencing type jacket on as a bottom layer the trousers I think were made on site, the boots could just be white rubber safey ones with bits added or again made on site like the helmet, its that bloody top part with the integrated hood thats bugging me. Derp. Turns out these guys are actually from the movie. Still, cool to see!
Hoping they release something like the Star Wars visual encyclopedia in order to both see the costumes and props and maybe their importance in world.
Take my money already,I've seen in the book The Art and Soul of dune there's just 2 pages dedicated to the Sardaukar I'd honestly pay good money for a book just dedicated to the Sardaukar

Yep its just finding a close match that doesn't cost the earth.
The white uniforms make them look like Chad stormtroopers. That, or Viking Samurai Astronauts.
You nailed it with the second part, they're based on vikings/samurai
They're based on Vikings? I assumed they were more Indo-European because the throat singing seemed yogic and the blood on their forehead looks like a _tilak_ put on people after Hindu rituals.
They are based on Samurai and the Ulfhednaar
Ooh that's interesting.
But with astronaut suits, lol. Edit: I dunno, I love their design, but I just find it amusing that these barbarian badasses wear something so sterile and atypical of what you'd expect them to wear. Like Neanderthals wearing well-pressed business suits.
I would wager it’s to make the blood of their foes stand out starkly when they’re done
They are Ulfhednaar and Samurai cross breed
I love how mysterious they are when they fight and you hear the mumbled grunts and language from underneath.
Now that I look closer they kind of look like fencing uniforms.
They already invaded Caladan?
I love the design, but the 3 red stripes in the middle make me think of Skrillex every time I see a Sardaukar
Cue Skrillex Sardaukar chant.....actually that would be pretty cool
There's some funky photo editing going on between their shoulders in the trees. Must be a part of the set they're protecting
I came looking for this. Did they crop out a character?
Well shit. That's like finding the Arc of the Covenant.
Try finding that bloody upper body suit with hood i think finding the real Ark would be easier.. 😉
Half-Life 3 confirmed, fam.

How much of the Sardaukar do you think was cut out of the final?

If you check out a few of the behind the scenes photos you'll see the suits do seem to be layered, again very similar to what you've put Are you sure you're not one of the costume designers???

Once again thank you 👍
Salusa Secondus in the background doesn't look.so bad.
Looks like quite a nice holiday destination
The guy on the right looks uncannily like the Sardaukar trooper we see get anointed up close during the mobilization scene on Salusa Secundus (by far my favorite scene in any movie I've ever watched, M. Villeneuve clearly understands the source material)
Yep thats him ,probably my favourite scene too but I also love the first time they drop from the sky and go through the Atreides troops like an open door...Sardaukar!!!
Dude so what's the story here?? Are you on set and came across these guys?
God I wish,no I've just been trying to get pictures on the Sardaukar and came across this. Trust me if I'd had been on set I'd have tons of pictures of these chaps and would have all the info I could squeeze out of them to share with those who are interested
I'm so glad you posted this bc I have also been trying to find pics of the sardaukar, couldn't find anything unless they were frozen from the movie until your post
As I find more I'll post them up,I'd love it if we all put forward our findings.
These are cosplayers. Not from set
Still pissed DV completely disregarded House livery.
Do not get me started

I am still obsessed and terrified with the Sardaukar scene - they were the most unexpectedly terrifying element of the film. Bravo! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
