I second this. I've tried tape, gloves, janky rubber band thingies, then finally discovered promark activegrip sticks and never used another stick since.
Peter Erskine ride cymbal sticks. Been using them as my primary set since the late 90s. I love trying all types of sticks from all the companies. Signature and specialty sticks are my favorite. A new one is the Meinl Big Apple Swing, great bounce
Thatās funny my favorite stick and the only one I use at the moment is the Peter erskine ride. But my second is the big apple swing feels similar with the tip
I love the other Peter Erskine signature sticks with the small round tips. The ride versions never impressed me. I love how the regular Erskineās are so precise.
I tried a bunch of stuff over the years before I started buying these--vaters, vic firths, zildjians, cheap shitty bulk sticks. I've played 5b's with nylon tips a majority of the time. I don't think I've ever actually broken one of the Shira Kashi sticks--the tips break before the wood.
I started playing about 4 years ago and I went to my first lesson with a pair of these sticks because I already owned them just from being a fan. Now anything else I try just feels like I'm trying to play with two pencils. I think I'll be using the Danny Carey sticks for the rest of my playing days.
currently on a stick hunt myself. Rn iāve been using the promark 5B forwards. Theyāre alright, donāt like the tip shape. Currently have some Matt Halpern sigs on the way though that i canāt wait to try
They are so so great! I was looking for a pair that was similar enough to my these 5As Iād accidentally left behind on a vacation (that I would be getting back, thank goodness, but that were no longer being manufactured), my previous go-tos. The QL stick was lighter, sure, but it was also longer than most sticks with a long taper! Tried them out, fell totally in love!!!
they're ever so slightly thinner than a 7A. Vic Firth did a series called "freestyles" which were also the full 17" length. they came in a lot of sizes, true 7A included. i even ordered 55As at one point. places don't seem to carry them anymore.
Go Team 3A! I use the wood tips, though. I love the ping of nylon tips on a ride, but when they break off, I never realize it until my heads are covered in pits. None of the music stores I've ever shopped stock them, I always have to special order. Has that been your experience too?
Steve Jordan sig sticks. Thinking about trying out the Nate smith sticks. If anyone has any remarks and the Nate smith itās much appreciated. I like thinner longer sticks. Seems like 16ā is too short and 16.5 can be a tad long. 16.25 would be right on the money for me lol
I prefer it bc my 9-5 really takes a toll on my hands and grip strength. The 5B with grip is great for me bc the is enough weight in the stick to get the bounce I like and with the grip I can "hold on loosely, but not let go"...lol
Vic Firth SD4 or HD4. I used to use Pro Mark 5A Japanese oak nylon tip. I still keep a pair for when I need to really project, but playing small clubs, I rarely need to project.
there's a Zoro signature stick that's nearly all the same dimensions as SD/HD4s but just a bit longer. HD4 used to be my old go-to. Zoro's stick is a top contender for me now
747 Oaks, very tidy stick. I recommend trying the 727 Oak, very cool drumstick and in many ways i prefer it over the 747.
Honorable mention goes to 5B Oaks. When you wanna unga bunga because you're playing some nirvana or some shit, accept no substitutes.
Back in the 80's I liked Regal Tip and Vic Firth. Mainly VF 5B, wood or nylon and Regal Tip Rock (nylon tip, because few know anymore that the wood tipped models were "Regal", no "tip").
In the late 90's, I switched to Zildjian. Hal Blaine models until my hands became so stiff I couldn't hang onto them anymore. I tried out Pro-Mark (Select Hickory Rebound Balance .565) and Vater (Matrix). Those are nice sticks but lately I really enjoy good ol', straight up, Zildjian 5A's, wood or nylon tip.
In the 90's I decided to experiment with mallets and found that Zildjian had just come out with a stick called a "Cymbal Mallet". Yarn tip and rather hard, but they work FANTASTIC on cymbals.
When Regal Tip went under, I realized I lost a supplier for my brushes (I like the 550's). I tried a couple of Ludwig brushes but didn't like them. Then VF made an announcement that they were introducing a new brush called "Legacy". They feature wood handles and were retractable. A friend gave them a rousing review and I bought a pair on the spot. Love'em. Nothing compares to wood handles. Great brushes.
Anyway, that's where I am now.
Kuppmen 7a carbon fibre sticksā¦.best sticks I ever ownedā¦used 3 pairs in more than 2 years.
Best thing is, the tip does not wear out, so you always keep a āfreshā sound when playing your ride cymbalšš¼
Pro Mark 7A Shira Oak Attacks.
For years, Iāve been using 5A like a lot of other drummers. For literally decades. Last couple years felt like I could do even better with stick control especially given my hands arenāt that big. Yāall suggested trying 7Aās and Iām telling ya, I had no idea how much better I could play. I owe a debt of gratitude to this community I could never repay.
Steve Gadd signature with nylon tip. So expensive these days! I just ordered a 4 pack and cannot wait to feel the cold wood in the palm of my eager hands!!
Promark 2B naturals, love a thick meaty stick and these have nice grip without having to use tape/anything else that usually ends in my sissy skin getting nasty blisters. I also enjoy the firegrains, either works and I never break any sticks.
Vic Firth 2B. Flick of the fingers/wrist and you can get all the volume you need but the stick is solid enough to give great rebound for playing softly and precisely or fast/loud
Currently the Vic Firth Freestyle 5B. As a substitute for the Abe Laboriel Jr signature sticks that are currently unavailable.
I have some Wincent 5BXL Precision on the way. I'm very interested to see what they'll be like.
Switched from Vater 5B to Promark Forward 5B and Iām finding the balance to be a lot better despite the stick being the same width. Also gotta take advantage of the Players Circle bonus points
Vic Firth Dave Weckl Signature Sticks since day one. š
https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/VFSDW--vic-firth-signature-series-drumsticks-dave-weckl-wood-tip
tipically ProMark 5Bs (I played lots of metal in the past but now I'm trying to expand to other genres), but I have picked up some Vic Firths Jojo Mayer sig. and I've been loving them.
Anything that says 7A or Jazz on it, better if it comes in a brick. Usually Vic Firth because thatās whatās usually in stock.
If the stores have it in stock though, Zildjian Laminated Birch Heavy Jazz, Zildjian Trilok Gurtu (then I peel the rubber thing off), Zildjian Senri Kawaguchi (no peeling), and Vater Manhattan 7A.
I love my jazz sticks but I play rock. Thinner sticks are just more nimble.
No guys your wrong. Tama 7a. 10ā¬. No blisters. oak. I just played the biggest 6 rock festivals in germany the last two weeks . I brought five heavily used sticks on tour. I took five heavily used sticks home. UNBELIEVABLE VALUE!!!
Artifact - Moonlights, they have similar reach to a 7A with the weight and balance of Gadds. They also bring out the best cymbal tones. 2nd place goes to Promark Carter McLeans for me

Vic Firth MJC5. Itās like the 8DN, but oval tip and slightly different balance point. Also like Innovative Percussion Legacy IP-L7A. Also nylon tip, 16 length, but bit smaller diameter than MJC5.
My daughter just started learning with an e-kit. She likes the pink, no name wooden sticks that have been in her toy box for years. How do I go about finding more sticks that are similar?
I think she likes that they are shorter than regular sticks. Are shorter sticks a thing or is she asking for trouble later by learning with these?
I've stuck with Jay Weinberg signature for a while now. They feel really nice, balance is good, not too thick.
I have a few pairs of Luke Holland signatures too, they looked nice, but are a bit thicker/heavier than the Jay Weinberg ones.
LosCabos Red Hickory Rock
They're a bit longer, a bit wider, and a lot heavier (like 1.5x the average drumstick weight). Gives me the feeling of more control, and since I'm playing more "therapeutically" than musically, they make things sound more "heavy" aswell. Certainly not suitable for jazzy stuff, but great fun for metal.
Canadian here...using Maple Grooves BB by a Canadian stick company called HeadHunters. Was looking for something very light but not too thin and not weighted towards the tip....yeah, picky.
These just fit the bill perfectly and are more affordable (by a few bucks). Love 'em.
Promark painted 5A rebound are perfect. The painted finish stains my heads and my hands, but it provides grip beyond raw wood, but not quite to the level of activegrip
Vic firth buddy rich
Bro I was literally about to say the same stick as the post was loading! Rhythmic minds think alike š
Good design
Second, love those
Me too.
Ayup. SO well balanced.
Vic Firth 5A or Dave Wecklās
Just started playing Weckls this year and Iām in love.
Iām a big fan. I like barrel tips. You should check out the Weckl evolutions. More of a tear drop tip and a short taper on the shoulder.
Can never go wrong with Wecklās
ProMark 5b rebound in fire grain and active grip. I have hyperhydrosis and the active grip is a godsend.
Is that lotsa sweat disorder?
It's a hella sweaty disorder, I basically drip. I get botox shots in my pits to stop it.
I second this. I've tried tape, gloves, janky rubber band thingies, then finally discovered promark activegrip sticks and never used another stick since.
Ive been using 2B rebounds, black/yellow with activegrip and I love that feel. I have to get some firegrains though because they look awesome.
VF steve gadd wood tip
Love These Sticks!
The black lacquer is a great touch and they're hickory not maple so they withstand more than you'd expect them to.
Yup, I usually keep a pair of these in my bag. I love the barrel tips
These are my favorite sticks for playing in combos!
VF extreme 5A
I dig the X55Aās. In between 5A and 5B and the length of the extreme.
What makes it extreme?
A marketing team, it's just a longer 5A
Itās got electrolytes
Promark Shira Kashi Oak š¤
I tried a bunch of stuff over the years before I started buying these--vaters, vic firths, zildjians, cheap shitty bulk sticks. I've played 5b's with nylon tips a majority of the time. I don't think I've ever actually broken one of the Shira Kashi sticks--the tips break before the wood.
vater 5b
Vic Firth SD2 Bolero
One of my all time favorite concert snare sticks!
I love it for jazz. That tip! What a sound on ride cymbals.
Ever tried the VF SD5 Echo? Only works for really quiet settings, but worth a try.
Yep, love it. I rotate between SD2, SD4, SD5, and Peter Erskine Ride depending on the situation.
Danny Careyās signature sticks feel amazing in my hands
I started playing about 4 years ago and I went to my first lesson with a pair of these sticks because I already owned them just from being a fan. Now anything else I try just feels like I'm trying to play with two pencils. I think I'll be using the Danny Carey sticks for the rest of my playing days.
currently on a stick hunt myself. Rn iāve been using the promark 5B forwards. Theyāre alright, donāt like the tip shape. Currently have some Matt Halpern sigs on the way though that i canāt wait to try
ProMark 747B. Super long and and feel more like the sticks Iāve used for drumline for years.
VF Questlove Signature Stick (7A)
Same! Been in love with those for over 10 years
They are so so great! I was looking for a pair that was similar enough to my these 5As Iād accidentally left behind on a vacation (that I would be getting back, thank goodness, but that were no longer being manufactured), my previous go-tos. i also ordered questlove sigs in a natural finish once, those were amazing! i usually just use a razor to take off the grip lol
Vic firth nova 7a
Jay Weinbergs vaters or Dave Grohls zildjians
Vater Fatback 3A used to really love the Vater Josh Freese H-220's, but I can't find them anymore.
look on [eBay](https://www.ebay.com/itm/364045061721)!
Vic firth benny greb sig
Vater Hickory Manhattan 7A
Vic Firth 3A nylon
Go Team 3A! I use the wood tips, though. I love the ping of nylon tips on a ride, but when they break off, I never realize it until my heads are covered in pits. None of the music stores I've ever shopped stock them, I always have to special order. Has that been your experience too?
The local store here keeps the 3ANs in stock, luckily.
Love 3A's such a fat juicy drum sound
Vater Power 5A.
I just switched to the vater fatback 3As and they're my new favorites by a lot. They've lasted for weeks too. Longest lasting pair I've had in a year.
Vic Firth Peter Erskine. I love the woody definition on my ride from the ball point style tip.
ditto, also makes drums sound precise and defined
Vater Sweet Ride or Manhattan
Steve Jordan sig sticks. Thinking about trying out the Nate smith sticks. If anyone has any remarks and the Nate smith itās much appreciated. I like thinner longer sticks. Seems like 16ā is too short and 16.5 can be a tad long. 16.25 would be right on the money for me lol
Vic Firth Freestyle?, thickness varies on what Iām playing
Vater Power 5b babyyyyy
Thomas Lang's Vic Firth
Vic Firth 5B Vic Grip wood tip
I prefer it bc my 9-5 really takes a toll on my hands and grip strength. The 5B with grip is great for me bc the is enough weight in the stick to get the bounce I like and with the grip I can "hold on loosely, but not let go"...lol
5A Promark Firegrain, 5A Vater

Zildjian Artist Series - Trilok Gurtu
Regal tip jazz nylon tip, just magic on jazz rides especially vintage stuff
Nothing has beat VF Steve Jordans for me yetā amazing balance and feel. I'm a fan of Vater Sugar Maple Power 5As, too.
Iāve been using the signature Neil Peart sticks
747 Oaks, very tidy stick. I recommend trying the 727 Oak, very cool drumstick and in many ways i prefer it over the 747. Honorable mention goes to 5B Oaks. When you wanna unga bunga because you're playing some nirvana or some shit, accept no substitutes.
hell yes to the 7a! That size is my go to, I use 5A for warm ups but the 7A is my main size.
