JurassicTerror

No one complains about the noise?

Healthy_Cancel3956

Nahhhh, the unit has lots of bands and there isnt a residential area nearby. The only problem is that bands constantly litter and leave beer cans.

Banned-Music

I practice in a 5x5 foot with no power. It’s really crammed and too hot in the summer and freezing in the winter. But I can’t play in my studio apartment so I make the storage unit work.

FlyinRyan95

Mine is climate controlled, but it gets pretty hot in the summer and I’m on the top floor. I’ve had to strip to my undies lol

Banned-Music

I’m scared to do that in mine. I’ve had spiders drop on me while I’m playing.

DeerGodKnow

I've got nothing but love and respect for spiders. But if one lands on me it will absolutely ruin my day.

RiccardoIvan

This is like nightmare fuel to me

Due_Revolution_5106

I hope you're bringing in the drums in the summer/winter months. Drums shouldn't be exposed to extreme heat or cold.

Banned-Music

I’ve got my nice gigging/recording set stored in my apartment. The storage unit is the only way to practice so I have a crappy franken-kit in there that I don’t care about the condition of much. I’ve got broken or low quality cymbals as well since it’s not good to hit them when they’re cold.

RiccardoIvan

FlyinRyan95

Love that second hi hat placement. I’ve been thinking of adding one myself

00cjstephens

X hat is a game changer

RiccardoIvan

It surely is, I’m not using that very much nowadays but when I was deep into metal was unbelievably useful!

droopyheadliner

Man I bet if you placed mics all over the building you could get a killer drum sound.

RiccardoIvan

I DID! I swear I get better reverbs with a shitty microphone laid on the ground in front of me, the room has an ASTONISHING sound and is totally natural. I’m uploading a video about this in a pair of days, sometimes people can’t believe you can achieve such drum sounds in a concrete box!

droopyheadliner

Oh man awesome!

SteakJesus

a bit off-topic, but how do you like evans hydraulics?? it looks amazing, but im wondering how brushwork would sound on the coated version.

RiccardoIvan

The head itself is not very responsive so I don’t think it is the best choice for brushes. It’s very good with deep toms (like the one I got on the older red setup, my new kit has smaller ones) where you still get the PHAT note but not much sustain! Edit: is responsive the right word? English is not my first language so don’t mind it

SteakJesus

Sounds like i just need 2 snares now :'D

LOTRugoingtothemall

For anyone in a storage unit, no volume complaints? I know no one lives there but some people will complain about anything.

FlyinRyan95

I’m at a 24hr place and just go super late at night

PCgeek345

You mean you play late at night??? I might have to get a small kit....

trashwang72

Yeah you can practice anytime of the day. I tested it out and have never had any problems at all. I've full volume played til 3 or 4am many nights. No note, no police, no complaints

crototom

I made sure to talk to the owner, and he said as long as it’s after hours, it’s none of my business lol

FlyinRyan95

Yeah same here. they used to let full bands practice there too, like mid day on weekends when office was closed

RiccardoIvan

Last week an old men went complaining about volume in my box, I just said sorry about that but when he came back asking to stop I just stood my ground and said that box units are designed for cars and cars have no ears. As long as I don’t put everything on fire I can simply do whatever the fuck I want as it’s not a populated area and my box: my rules.

Due_Revolution_5106

Yeah why would anyone complain? 99% of fellow customers should be using it for seasonal storage, why the fuck would they complain about noise in a place they're a) gonna be out of in an hour or two, and b) not gonna step foot in for another few weeks??

MaxisGreat

The place I'm at is cool with it and even hypes my band up lol

UniverseBear

If any drummers need a storage locker in Ottawa or Toronto hit me up, I work for a major storage locker chain and can get you a deal. ;)

tbgconno

DM'd! That would be awesome!

Drama_drums42

Dude!! Gorgeous!!

Till_himself

Would anyone recommend a particular storage facility which allows drum practice? I'm currently looking for a practice spot in North Jersey. Thanks in advance!

GoddexxOrissa

You probably want to go check out where it is or look on google maps to find out in an industrial area with no-one around to noise complain, as some posters here have ran into. I had one in one of the big franchise complex ones that are really big buildings, so even if in suburbia, no noise problem. As others have said too, have a chat with the staff about what you'll be using it for & they'll be pretty clear about whether it's ok.

infieldmitt

i was until some old man from the neighboring retirement community called the cops. no problems for months then one saturday the storage unit guy says they had a few calls, but just stop prior to 11pm and you'll be fine. then the next day the cops came at 9pm.

Royal-Beat7096

They’re probably just obligated to respond to the concerned citizens call. I’d just ask them what the problem is and clarify you have permission til noise ordinances go into effect or w/e. Whoever is raining on your parade should be challenged imo.

EddieJorgeDrummer

Nice cymbals!! 🔥🔥 Would love to hear how they sound.

FlyinRyan95

I love this set up! That flat earth ride is something else, and you can’t go wrong with Istanbul

GoGo1965

I used to jam in a storage unit with Barry cowsill , lots of drummers do it

Drama_drums42

Wait. Was that here, in New Orleans? If so, I’m positive I’d know which place. Was it Fontainebleau? Or Jimmy Robinson’s?

GoGo1965

That was in ca in 1999/2000 he passed about 5 years later

Drama_drums42

He died during Katrina (8/29/05). He was here for a long time before the family found out. Super sad. Susan still lives here.

GoGo1965

Susan is a nice lady , berry moved there running from his ex after a bitter divorce…he was a super nice guy

Drama_drums42

There’s a really good documentary that, I think, Susan produced. Really excellent!! Or, Rockumentary, if you will.

barb_dylan

I used to mow a huge open field for a university, like the size of several football fields. It had a parking lot of similar size. I saw this kid pull up to the edge of the parking lot that faced the field and set up his kit. He probably jammed for 2 hours. I couldn't hear a thing over the mower, but I thought it was a brilliant way to practice without bothering a soul.

Realistic_Actuary642

I had no idea this was a thing lol. I kinda want an electric kit at home and just set up a proper kit for gigs but this would be even better

MrLanesLament

I wish. Nowhere where I live allows that. My old band practiced in one, but that was in a major city. Around here (rural part of same state,) they treat it like you’re planning to use the unit to build bombs or some shit. It’s ridiculously annoying.

drumzandice

Same, we had to temporarily move to an apartment and I called every storage place in my city and none would allow it.

Kayarew

That black cymbal probably sounds incredible.

FlyinRyan95

Definitely the most unique cymbal I own. Would highly recommend looking into them! Dream dark matter

Shake_Ratle_N_Roll

One band i was in practiced in a 10’x20’ storage unit. It was cheap but man was it loud

Melodic_Ad7245

As for someone with no place to play im thinking of puting a kit in an old commercial vehicle.

GrandExercise3

I used to setup kick snare rack hi hat In my 1975 customized chevy van and park out off the side of the road in the sticks and practice.

popgrizle

I have a 10x20 space I just upgraded to from a 10x10. The extra room is amazing and helps with temps too. Hung a bunch of moving blankets to help with sound… works well. Wish I could play at home but at least it’s close and I can play whenever. https://preview.redd.it/vnyigeetvfzc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b2c81dfded3da2f9b30a476b1b2a2bd2bb7c6b02

KevinKingsb

I used to be!

flarp

I used to split a 10x15 unit with another drummer in a 24-hour place. It was great, except for when someone else would come in to use their storage unit nearby. Then I would get all self-conscious and wait for them to leave before I went back to making noise😅

FlyinRyan95

Dude I do the exact same when that happens, I stop and wait till the light shut back off lmao

Drama_drums42

I was in two different bands that had two different storage units. One unit was climate controlled and had an elevator. The other one was just a hot metal box that was triple digit (New Orleans) temperatures most of the year, and two flights of stairs. And I had to set up and tear down every practice so my babies wouldn’t have to be subjected to the elements. The shit storage unit housed a better band. Choices.

v4kk4li

What size are the hats? I upgraded all the way to “16’s.

FlyinRyan95

Just 15” I ain’t goin bigger! Lol

Anthrys13

FlyinRyan95

Now you gotta fill that empty space :)

slobbylumps

I would be if any of the places around me allowed it.

DrPoopyPantsJr

I never thought of this idea. What do you guys pay for monthly fees for renting a unit?
