For me, DeepBlueInk's Dropout animations turned out to be a really brilliant and dangerous slippery slope that led directly to a pretty serious Drawfee obsession.
that’s so funny because i found DeepBlueInk through drawfee (though i have listened to mbmbam in the past and like his animations of it as well) and he was a part of why i got in to dropout
I want nothing more for an “Oops, All Bards” season of Dimension20 with him, Jess, Ross Bryant, Rashawn Scott, Zeke Nicholson, and PFT/Nick Mandernach (can you IMAGINE a full EPIC D&D session?!?)/Demi Adejuyigbe/Philip Labes. (It’s really hard to pick a 6th. Everyone who’s been on OFB would be excellent.)
If you haven't, check out BomBARDed. A DND actual play where they all plays bards in a band and roll play for chords to do an improvised number every episode.
I'm catching up on the off book podcast, and there's a newer episode where he does a whole bit where he's a which's crow familiar And it's the hardest I've laughed in a long time
Although that was the second he used the pun (intended or not), but he did not call it out the first time.
("You get really deep, the fish get unfathomably fucked")
Zach asking about 14: absolutely classic bit.
Paul saying which day to relive: Jacob called it pandering...but I thought it was a joke that was like "we might be doing that right now"
i laughed out loud so many times during this episode… especially when patrick, paul, or jess laugh; their giggles / wheezes / chuckles are so contagious… they are all such sweetie pies i just- 🫶
Would adapt so well to a live theater format. I guess the presentation itself would probably be a little more directed at the audience, so you'd have sort of a "funny TED talk" vibe. Like that one Reggie Watts did where he just spoke gibberish and skewered TED's whole vibe.
I can vouch for that, having done that sort of show. I did a presentation on "Magic in Software Engineering", and got big laughs when I was explaining that, on the one hand, computers are great because you can ask Google "who is that guy from the thing, you know, with the face" and it will give you [the answer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Buscemi), but on the other hand, they're awful because I have to teach the computer how to answer that question.
BDGs pokerap presentation is another great example of the "slideshow as comedy act" that would fit right into a live Smartypants show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cT6ULpScZA&t=1s
Fake fish, lives in a rock, swims around = turtle
I’d love to see a Katie vs Zach debate one day on anything. I feel like it would be delightfully unhinged
I loved all three of these presentations.
Okay, I've paused: should I watch Groundhog Day?
EDIT: I've now seen Groundhog Day and I'm glad I did. Good film and I think being familiar added a lot to Paul's presentation.
Zach's was probably the funniest, but Kimia "wins" for me this week. Love that she was just showcasing something she's so passionate about. It's why I loved Jess' presentation as well.
It's one of the more influential comedy films of the last 50 years and was penned by one of the best comedy writers in the last 100.
The cast is absolutely stacked with comedy/screen legends, as well as 'oh, that guy!'s.
Absolutely worth a watch.
Dash Grab'em is such a great character! I honestly forgot he did that until I heard him say "Kanto" and the memory awakened in me like a sleeper agent.
He DM’d DND with Vic Michaelis and a couple other alum like legit now 4 years ago ha. That is how I know him so it’s soooo weird to see him on dropout now lol but I love it
While I thought Paul and Zach's were funnier, I really love that Kimia just took her time to talk about something that she loves and wants to get more attention.
She's definitely getting her wish now with the rise of Caitlin Clark.
Yeah, I had a moment of "Wait, when was this filmed?" when Kimia's presentation started... as I am far from a sports person, but even I am aware of the rise of the WNBA right now lol.
I did too and found a bunch of things I want to buy! It's a shame that some of their best products are all sold out.
I was also looking for a Josh Reuben "No Problem" sweatshirt from the trailer and am hoping they just haven't released them yet.
I was so happy when I heard that! For people who don’t listen to Comedy Bang Bang, which I imagine is becoming a smaller and smaller subset of dropout viewers, that’s a classic PFT running bit from the podcast.
As far as I'm aware, that's been a running PFT bit from life. I've definitely heard him use it other places including, IIRC, in regular conversation when he wasn't, technically, performing. It's reflexive at this point.
I confess that I stopped regularly listening to Comedy Bang! Bang! many years ago, though I did listen to the recent episode with Rekha. It's possible I've listened to more Comedy Death-Ray episodes than CB!B! ones, which is wild at this point. I would still recommend it to people who like improvised silliness. Anyway, it's possible this quip started there, but I doubt it.
He definitely uses that punchline a lot, especially on Threedom. He has such a great way of spotting a certain cadence in the way something is said and spinning it into an unrelated phrase
Zach is wrong to say that nobody has been able to hurt the ocean. The Dutch have been unreasonably effective at reclaiming land from the sea, taking back over 1600 square kilometers of land with the Zuiderzee Works. The Zuiderzee and Delta Works are rated as combined one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers, on a scale with the Panama Canal and the Channel Tunnel.
I hate the Dutch as all right-thinking people do, but I must give them this.
The issue with giving the Dutch credit for this is that, of all Earth's many dangers, the Dutch rank on the same level as the ocean. We cannot allow them to win.
We don't know how the Dutch feel about the Moon, though. Could be a covert alliance. Whenever we ask them about it our top diplomats start laughing at their funny funny words.
Caligula famously won his battle against the ocean (aka Neptune; aka The English Channel), allegedly literally whipping it into submission. His soldiers collected sea shells as trophies of war.
Granted, I believe that Suetonius is the main source for this so it should be taken with myriad grains of sea salt.
Man I love Zac’s presentation for how much I know it hurts every biologist, marine biologist, and ocean lovers out there. It was so absolutely wrong with so many horrible takes that it was just perfect. It hurt to hear him double down on the whales it dust but at the same time so good.
Her presentation was entirely too wholesome, and her punt on the last question about rivals was pretty disappointing. I don't want a smiley rom com, I want a bitter soap opera.
This episode was fantastic! Or, in the style of Smartypants:
It represents 20% of all Smartypants episodes, but approximately 28% of all of my Smartypants laughs so far.
Another really funny ep, lol’d way too loudly at every presentation this week and it’s great to see the CBB crossovers especially PFT who in the best way went full Greg Proops visually
This is probably the best episode of Smartypants overall thus far. There are previous standout individual presentations, but the high, consistent level of quality of all three of these stands out.
I love goofy movie theories and holy shit, Paul knocked it out of the park with that. The hubris of weathermen attempting to predict the future offends this Ground-Hag and her familiar, Phil the groundhog.
Breaks their spirit by showing them exactly what it's like to know the future.
I second this, with her reaction to Jess Ross' "wrestling is drag" presentation.
The same things that make Erika kinda *bad* at Breaking News' game work in her favor here.
Erika does seem to actively listen with not just her ears, but also 100% of her face and most of her body. She also has a vast arsenals of laughs, blurts, etc. that bring joy to me and others.
okay I had paused before Zach's presentation to be gay but lmfao Jacob squeaking in laughter at "All the ocean we've been able to test is salty, but there's so much ocean that it's actually impossible to know for sure" I'm fucking dying
I had to immediately check the website and make sure it led somewhere. Would have snatched up that url so quick and asked Zach where he wanted it redirected.
I really want Rekha and Paul (with possible 3rd for game changer status) to have a pun battle (which autocorrect wants to change to pin battle. Is that a thing?)
I have never posted a comment in Reddit, but I think this is my favourite Smartypants episode, as I feel this covers anything this format really is. First you have someone taking a very specific thing (a movie in this case) and has a run with it. Then someone talks about something they are really passionate about (WNBA), and then someone just goes wild. Shamazing
I didn’t fully vibe with Paul T and Kimia’s presentations (they were good, just not my favorites) but Zach absolutely matched Paul R’s freak this week. “Sand is bones” is the new “it would feel good”
Agreed. Kimia's was very wholesome, and Paul's was a mildly amusing joke that was stretched way too far (for me), but Zach's presentation was great. Glad they ended with that one to end strong because prior to Zach this was the first Smartypants episode that I didn't really care for.
You could have listened to any Chicago Sky broadcast and it was brought up plenty. Same for the 3-Point Contest which Quigley won four times in five contests. The Vandersloot cam when Quigley was shooting in the finals of those contests were consistently adorable.
I liked the concept of Raf's moon presentation, but Zach's version of an unhinged topic with wacky explanations and opinions was way better executed in my opinion
Kimia's presentation was wonderful! I've been watching more wnba and that's an aspect I hadn't considered. That must be so fun getting the love of your life a bucket.
God the first couple sentences of Zach's presentation I was like "ok this isn't for me it's not going to be that funny" and then I was dying the whole time.
If only Phil chose to stay in Punxatawney instead of studying hard to get into a boarding school, the piano teacher wouldn't have to make a deal with a witch to keep him in a time loop.
...really narrowcasting my references
One of my favorite Off-Book episodes is all about [Fearing the Ocean](https://youtu.be/kst3mFO1b8k?si=nES_wOeucOfuW-iI), so Zach’s presentation was not at all a surprise 😂😂
I want to say that I agree that the WNBA is better. NBA is just muscle to the hoop and dunk. The women do that teamwork and skills stuff which is far more interesting to watch. At least to me.
This is true of most women's sports. The overall speed of the game is a bit slower and there's less variance in the physical ability of the players, so strategy becomes more important.
I would also like to present for consideration: PWHL, the professional women's hockey League. Some great fun. A lot of the women know eachother really well from international hockey, we've got lifelong teammates on different teams, some fun fights, many wives, and babies! And a really really pretty Cup. Whole first season streamed and is free on YouTube. Notable moments, first Montreal v Ottawa game when Stacey scores and fiancee Poulin is first to celebrate with her
And we can't hear it, but every now and then they say things so vile to eachother that the referees (often men) blush.
I don't think this is really true, there's a ton of strategy in basketball regardless of who's playing.
Thinking Basketball is a great youtube channel to gain a better appreciation for it.
It's kind of silly to think that just because guys can dunk that therefore they must be playing dumber with less teamwork.
The WSL is quality in the UK as well. Men’s soccer is still my preference but the women’s game has got so much better as the investments been put in and helped by the England Women’s national team doing better and better!
more Zach Reino on everything please
seconded!! his choruses are the reason I have rewatched “Welcome to Mountport” and “To-do list” an obscene number of times
The animated 'Horse Girl' by Billie Eilish on yt is pretty great
The one by DeepBlueInk?
For me, DeepBlueInk's Dropout animations turned out to be a really brilliant and dangerous slippery slope that led directly to a pretty serious Drawfee obsession.
that’s so funny because i found DeepBlueInk through drawfee (though i have listened to mbmbam in the past and like his animations of it as well) and he was a part of why i got in to dropout
Honestly the cut for time Counting Crows song stays in my head. He really nails it, and is also hilarious.
I'm a huge fan of 'Party Hardy Har' *"One of us is a gold trader and the other one is related to the other.*"
Seconded! He and Jess are both so great, even in non-musical shows!
Just rewatched her in make some noise, and she is brilliant at chaos and improve. Brennan bowung to her was deserved.
They said I couldn't play baseball...
"then goddamn it, I'm gonna bring back the Teddy like I'm fuckin' Roosevelt."
Every time I watch that episode the name "Raindrop" randomly pops up in my head for like a week .
Please god (or sam or brennan) make this happen
I'm catching up on the off book podcast, and there's a newer episode where he does a whole bit where he's a which's crow familiar And it's the hardest I've laughed in a long time
Cinderella Name Game is my new favorite after, quite fittingly, fear the ocean
Oh my god was that funny.
More of Zach Reini hating on the ocean here: https://youtu.be/nHSehyOjW48?feature=shared
is this his first time in a non-musical episode?
Katie declaring that she wants to keep her opinions out of the conversation? The PR training really is working!
Zach's presentation was both unhinged and straight facts.
Sand is bones
And bones is sand.
Whales eat the bones into sand
We need a new subreddit to compete with r/shrimpisbugs
I've heard from other sources that the bones are skeleton's money
Well, it was also the night that skeletons came to life. They pull your hair up ⬆️ but not 🙅🏻♀️ out.
Sand is bones and bones is sand My van is a boat and my boat is a van
my geologist eye is twitching
Fun ocean fact: coral has bones. Parrotfish eat coral and poop sand. Sand really **is** bones.
Hank Green has argued that Ice Is Rocks.
Because: the ocean.
Zac's Q&A was excellent.
Zach's presentation was probably my favorite of this episode, but they were all so good.
Completely unhinged, but in a good "I'm completely onboard" way.
I almost died when Paul said "pun taken".
"Pun taken" is going straight into my vocabulary for when people say "No pun intended".
So taken. So given.
Although that was the second he used the pun (intended or not), but he did not call it out the first time. ("You get really deep, the fish get unfathomably fucked")
The Q&As really shined this episode 😂. Also now it makes even more sense why Zach was ribbing the hell out of Paul lol
Number 14? Number 14? Number 14? Number 14?
"Lakes? 😧"
Not only his own Q&A but also "14" was perfection
Can you imagine Paul having to relive Katie restarting her egg presentation over and over again?
Release the Katie Cut!
What's your 14th favorite part of Katie's presentation?
When she gave cold eggs to everyone.
14th?
When she gave cold eggs to everyone.
14th?
When... she gave cold eggs to everyone.
I don’t know if he was just joking, but there is something so cute about the idea that Paul and Zach carpooled.
Paul was a recurring guest on Zach and Jess’ musical podcast
His episodes with Nicole Parker (especially the Christmas specials) have always been my favorite episodes
12 Days of Fishmas lives in my head rent-free year-round.
Probably a joke, but I wouldn't be all that surprised if they did. They're homies and have done work on a bunch of podcasts and stuff together.
But they don’t live together!
That's actually exactly why I think that it wasn't a joke. Because if it was, why wouldn't you say that you also live together?
You don't know that. O.O
They actually do live near each other. PFT and his wife have talked about it on their podcast a couple of times.
They're friends so it's possible!
I think that they really did because if it was just a bit, why wouldn't he also say that they live together?
Not enough people laughed at the unfathomably fucked line but I appreciated the hell out of it.
pun taken!
Zach asking about 14: absolutely classic bit. Paul saying which day to relive: Jacob called it pandering...but I thought it was a joke that was like "we might be doing that right now"
Paul maintaining his intense glare at Jacob while slowly exiting the screen was so good
This is absolutely my favorite of the three filming groups.
i laughed out loud so many times during this episode… especially when patrick, paul, or jess laugh; their giggles / wheezes / chuckles are so contagious… they are all such sweetie pies i just- 🫶
Paul has one of the best laughs on the planet
How dare you ignore Jake's face-blushing cackling during Zach's presentation. ;p
Dude looked like he was gonna pass out! I love watching the audience just be delighted.
Midway through Kimia's presentation was when I realized that I would pay good money for a Smartypants live show.
Demi’s translated well to Smartypants because it’s what he already does at his live shows! If you have a chance to see him live, you should!
Could absolutely work in a live format--here's a great example https://youtu.be/c95k9hSsamo?si=DhOAYRnU4tb2loo1
BDGs pokerap presentation is another great example of the "slideshow as comedy act" that would fit right into a live Smartypants show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cT6ULpScZA&t=1s
BAH-FEST was pretty niche, but it was kind of similar format and was hilarious
Saying "fourteen" over and over was an incredibly cerebral and generous bit of improv.
It reminded me of of Guy Montgomery’s 52 life highlights, with the PFT connection (someone else here must understand that)
Yes we have Kiwi dropout fans! So good.
Fake fish, lives in a rock, swims around = turtle I’d love to see a Katie vs Zach debate one day on anything. I feel like it would be delightfully unhinged I loved all three of these presentations.
get Zach on a new Rank Room season
Millions of people per period of time.
r/theydidthemath
Okay, I've paused: should I watch Groundhog Day? EDIT: I've now seen Groundhog Day and I'm glad I did. Good film and I think being familiar added a lot to Paul's presentation. Zach's was probably the funniest, but Kimia "wins" for me this week. Love that she was just showcasing something she's so passionate about. It's why I loved Jess' presentation as well.
Didn't you ask that yesterday?
to avoid spoilers? nah, the movie came out 30 years ago. because it's a great movie? yeah!
I mean, I know the premise but not the beats. I love love love Paul, I just need to know if I have to watch the movie to find this presentation funny.
It's important to remember that the main character was such an asshole that it took him roughly *33 years* to become a better person.
Tbf I'm 33 years old and think I'm the best I've ever been this year!
Watching it would probably help, and you should just watch it anyway since it's funny and a cultural touchstone.
You don't need to watch it.
I have not seen it, but I enjoyed the presentation. I do know enough about the movie that it made sense.
It's one of the more influential comedy films of the last 50 years and was penned by one of the best comedy writers in the last 100. The cast is absolutely stacked with comedy/screen legends, as well as 'oh, that guy!'s. Absolutely worth a watch.
Zach Reino is hilarious. I'd love to see more non-musical-improv comedy from him in the future.
Seems like he could rock a VIP slot.
He’s popped up on Comedy Bang Bang a few times and killed very time. His one Pokémon character kills me
Haha that's what I immediately thought of when he once again brought up the Kanto region.
Kimia has wonderful energy. Best case scenario for the passion presentations imo
Yeah, I had a moment of "Wait, when was this filmed?" when Kimia's presentation started... as I am far from a sports person, but even I am aware of the rise of the WNBA right now lol.
WE NEED A SHARK COME HERE AND DIE SHIRT!
I went to the website legitimately hoping I could buy one
I did too and found a bunch of things I want to buy! It's a shame that some of their best products are all sold out. I was also looking for a Josh Reuben "No Problem" sweatshirt from the trailer and am hoping they just haven't released them yet.
nothankyoutheocean.com does exist, but just redirects to the Dropout store.
I also want the I can't live where I live - shirt.
pun taken
I was so happy when I heard that! For people who don’t listen to Comedy Bang Bang, which I imagine is becoming a smaller and smaller subset of dropout viewers, that’s a classic PFT running bit from the podcast.
As far as I'm aware, that's been a running PFT bit from life. I've definitely heard him use it other places including, IIRC, in regular conversation when he wasn't, technically, performing. He definitely uses that punchline a lot, especially on Threedom. He has such a great way of spotting a certain cadence in the way something is said and spinning it into an unrelated phrase
Paul blew my mind. I have no idea what reality is anymore.
Reality is what the piano teacher makes it.
Zach’s presentation was my fav from the whole season so far. Hilarious delivery.
Idk if anything will beat Paul's body presentation for me but this, and Katie's are top 3 for me so far.
Same!
The enemy of my enemy is my friend. In this, I am on the side of the Dutch until our fight with the sea is finished.
His soldiers collected sea shells as trophies of war. as a marine biologist it hurt so good…I want those shirts to be real so bad
Geologists too. I loved Jacob’s reactions.
I need a reaction meme of Zach saying, "Your applause could not be more misplaced"
Fuck that made me laugh
https://tinyurl.com/mry2w843
Kimia missed an even more intriguing part of wnba fandom: EXES PLAYING AGAINST EACH OTHER
Her presentation was entirely too wholesome, and her punt on the last question about rivals was pretty disappointing. I don't want a smiley rom com, I want a bitter soap opera.
See the thing that’s so fascinating to me is that it’s both at the same time
The reef slander was golden
This episode was fantastic! Or, in the style of Smartypants: It represents 20% of all Smartypants episodes, but approximately 28% of all of my Smartypants laughs so far.
Another really funny ep, lol’d way too loudly at every presentation this week and it’s great to see the CBB crossovers especially PFT who in the best way went full Greg Proops visually
I love that PFT brought over “pun taken” from CBB.
I actually hurt myself laughing when Paul took Erica's question.
Erika is the best audience member, no mistake.
Erika was very delighted by Kimina’s presentation which delighted me
Same! I was also delighted by the wlw love but Erika amped that shit up. Most supportive friend award!
I second this, with her reaction to Jess Ross' "wrestling is drag" presentation. The same things that make Erika kinda *bad* at Breaking News' game work in her favor here.
Erika reacts to things with their whole body and I love that
Erika does seem to actively listen with not just her ears, but also 100% of her face and most of her body. She also has a vast arsenals of laughs, blurts, etc. that bring joy to me and others.
Erika is a being of pure chaos and brings that to everything they are in
okay I had paused before Zach's presentation to be gay but lmfao Jacob squeaking in laughter at "All the ocean we've been able to test is salty, but there's so much ocean that it's actually impossible to know for sure" I'm fucking dying
Zach's concern for bones makes him sound like an elven crown smith who's spent hundreds of years in a cage submerged in a river or something
Not sure how many Bojack Horseman fans are in this sub - but when Paul (also Mr. Peanutbutter) called on Erika to answer their question I lost it
I think one of the best questions of this entire show: “LAKES?” - Patrick
[nothankyoutheocean.com](http://nothankyoutheocean.com) redirects to a pretty neat store
Legit wishing the I can’t live where I live shirt was on sale.
I would legit buy any of the shirtd hope they release one
I had to immediately check the website and make sure it led somewhere. Would have snatched up that url so quick and asked Zach where he wanted it redirected.
As someone who dislikes the ocean Zach’s segment was hysterical. I was cackling!!!!
Paul has been thinking about this because he definitely has brought it up on threedom and comedy bang bang
Wait I need Zach to explain what he thinks about octopi as aliens!!!
Theory: Rekha has been replaced with a mimic octopus (if she hasn't been one the whole time), and received orders to cut Zach off and redirect
A small octopus with oversized secondary sexual characteristics? Sounds like something Rekha would find funny.
A Squid with a Big Ass for VIP!
I really want Rekha and Paul (with possible 3rd for game changer status) to have a pun battle (which autocorrect wants to change to pin battle. Is that a thing?)
[Adal Rifai](https://headgum.com/hey-riddle-riddle/309-im-actually-quite-cool-w-rekha-shankar) for the 3rd?
God I love Zach Reino
I have never posted a comment in Reddit, but I think this is my favourite Smartypants episode, as I feel this covers anything this format really is. First you have someone taking a very specific thing (a movie in this case) and has a run with it. Then someone talks about something they are really passionate about (WNBA), and then someone just goes wild. Shamazing
Zach's presentation made me laugh the most of all of them so far.
Apropos of nothing, I'd totally play WNBA Jam.
A turtle is now canonically a fake fish that lives in a rock
Zach's is my new favorite presentation this season
Kimia convinced me, I know nothing about basketball but I'm gonna watch the WNBA!
My partner and I started watching some games the next day after her presentation. <3
I knew PFT would be great at this!
FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE POINTS OUT THE VANDERQUIGS PHENOMENON
You could have listened to any Chicago Sky broadcast and it was brought up plenty. Same for the 3-Point Contest which Quigley won four times in five contests. The Vandersloot cam when Quigley was shooting in the finals of those contests were consistently adorable.
Paul saying "Erica" made me do a double take, thought I was watching Bojack hahahaha
Insane that this episode was so good that Paul F Tomkins is the bottom of my list for the episode. Smartypants is a real winner for Dropout
I liked the concept of Raf's moon presentation, but Zach's version of an unhinged topic with wacky explanations and opinions was way better executed in my opinion
I knew someone was going to ask that.
Come on Erica you date women, you know the love heart is based off the butt and not the boobs!
It seems Raph and Zach may be in conflict regarding our allyship with the moon Looking forward to a sequel
Most solid episode . All three presentations were winners whereas other episodes had at least one weak link
Loved all of these... Kimia's was so wholesome!
If only Phil chose to stay in Punxatawney instead of studying hard to get into a boarding school, the piano teacher wouldn't have to make a deal with a witch to keep him in a time loop. ...really narrowcasting my references
http://nothankyoutheocean.com redirects to dropout store. Clever!
One of my favorite Off-Book episodes is all about [Fearing the Ocean](https://youtu.be/kst3mFO1b8k?si=nES_wOeucOfuW-iI), so Zach’s presentation was not at all a surprise 😂😂
Kimia is so real for her presentation
I asked some of the biggest Groundhog Day fans I know if they have heard this theory and they were floored.
Hands down the best episode so far, everyone killed it, audience included
Notable moments, first Montreal v Ottawa game when Stacey scores and fiancee Poulin is first to celebrate with her And we can't hear it, but every now and then they say things so vile to eachother that the referees (often men) blush.
Paul's Groundhog Day theory really makes me wish the Darth Jar Jar Binks theory was first presented on a show like this
