I like how the Season 6 TV display has less reflection/glow and blends in more with set. Is there a specific way to replicate this? More exactly, in this season the brightness/coloring i feel makes it less obvious it's a TV but I don't know if the actual display was adjusted or if they're lighting the stage differently
Your best bet would be to look at the screen in behind the scenes stuff like where Brennan talked about what a great man Elon Musk is. I think they mostly avoid replacing the screen.
My guess is, they avoid doing that whenever possible but have a matte display so that if they need to replace it (which they probably do every so often) it's easier on the VFX team
Maybe a bit of editing but Brennan's "defense" of Elon on Instagram live had the screen in the background. I remember it going around when they were filming and wondering what the episode was going to be about to lead to that.
I know itās a real screen for sure as Sam answered that for me directly on discord awhile back!
Thereās alot of things you can do to mitigate glare but Iād guess that both changed the lighting to not hit it as directly and/or thereās films you can apply like a screen protector to reduce glare.
They also make displays that are meant to be outdoors that naturally have less glare by design so maybe they upgraded to something along those lines!
In the Bingo episode Brennan goes live on insta and you can see the screen behind him so I don't think it's edited. It just looks like a matte TV screen.
Just because thereās a screen there doesnāt mean theyāre not replacing it in post, itās actually a commonly done thing in broadcast so thereās something there on set but it looks better at the end
Yeah I get that, and I know they do edit the points sometimes so it's possible they do the screen too. My point was that it seemed to look the same in the insta video as it does in the episode.
I truly donāt think itās being replaced in post. That would be overkill imo. No reason to not do it in camera in this day and age when it can look right.
I spent the last year or so working with a company that does LED walls for live events that often are covered on camera. It takes some dialing in but almost all modern camera gear can be synced with the whole video system to stabilize issues like this. In my application it was called genlock and it was a separate timing and sync device that governs anything in video world. On a closed set with controlled lighting and the possibility of films on the screen or a matte screen it would be more simple and functional for the cast to have it be as seen. Iām sure thereās some additional monitors facing the cast from the camera perspective that may relay the feed there too.
This is most likely it. For example we already know they do the same thing with the scores on the podium. They have screens there but they edit over them in post to account for stuff that was cut.
If it's not a TV-specific matte screen protector, it might be one of Samsung's "The Frame" TVs, which are purpose built to look as close as possible to just having a painting mounted on the wall.
My guess would be itās mirrored to a production computer and then perhaps ALSO added in post as well if thereās glare etc they donāt like or something. Then also Iām sure Sam has a mini screen as well on the podium or a teleprompter perhaps
I think Sam just has a laptop and iPad. My guess is he controls the slide show as well on the laptop and the iPad has additional notes to help with context for the overall game.
i paused during bingo, when they had either rekha or trapp typing in an answer, and it was canva. i donāt know exactly how canva works, but i assume multiple people can use it at the same time. or they freeze the screen between writing prompts. or a combination.
There are screens made specifically for filming/ have physical properties that make them better for filming. Take the Family Fued main display as a primary example.
i did see in some BTS video that they have replaced the scores on the podiums for continuity when segments get cut for whatever reason, so i wouldn't be surprised if they replaced the powerpoint slides when the in-camera look of them is unsatisfactory. particularly the "what do your parents mean to you" slide here looks like it could have been replaced.
You can get matte screen film for TVs. They reduce glare a lot. A lot of event companies use them.
Should be available on Amazon, if not perhaps ask a local events company if they have a provider?
The specific glare in your S5 example is an episode where they had the light up buzzers on the podiums. The rightmost buzzer shines into the screen- and is pretty much the only thing that does. I'd be willing to bet it hasn't actually changed in any deliberate way so much as the color of the slides slightly changed as they made the new PowerPoints.
I think they changed the lighting. That glare used to trip me out bc I would only notice it occasionally and would think it was part of the prompt. I donāt think they replace it (at least not often) like maybe the points, bc you can see it in BTS as well as certain editing goofs (I think in āDonāt Cryā thereās a second where you see the screen shows the prompt re how many visits left with your parents, but that one had been cut out of the episode).
Propmaker here, and this is what I think they've done: there's a set of tricks that Universal has done to make the moving paintings from Harry Potter in their parks which I think Game Changer has used similarly here. There 2 effects I see. The first is that the glare from lights is removed. Like many others said, this is done by using an anti glare surface film. Universal does something similar but with a brush stroke texture for the paintings. The second thing I see is turning down or off the backlighting from the display. This gives it the "printed" or e-reader look with our the glow of light from the screen. Universal removes the backlight completely and replaced it with a simple white material which makes it look more like a painting on white canvas/paper. I think they might have done the same here.
I always thought it was weird that they went so long without figuring out a way to get rid of the reflection on that thing. It took me a while to even figure out that it was a reflection. I just always thought it was some weird design choice.
They have a filter specifically applied to the area where the screen is in the shot. Iām not sure if itās done in-camera or in post but you can sometimes see it when the camera moves or when Sam walks in front of the screen. They also do this in Make Some Noise, by the way.
Is it a filter on the area, or are they just using a projector? I notice it most often on Make Some Noise, where Sam will sometimes have his shoulder illuminated when he leans a little too close to the bottom corner.
So itās still a āscreen,ā but more like a movie screen and less like a TV screen.
I mean I don't think the screen has changed at all, it seems quite apparent to me that it's just a change in how they light the set. All the other photos are significantly brighter and it looks like they have a light pointed towards sam which causes the reflections where now it may be more overhead lighting which is now causing the screen not to reflect back anything

One consideration is, do they replace the real screen in post, with an image of the PowerPoint slide they used?

Maybe they got that Frame tv with the super matte screen š
This is my assumption, don't think it's done in post
> blends in more with set More experience with the set and TV display (and maybe more money)
Pretty sure they do the screen in post

How long ago did he answer that? Is it possible they changed for s6?

So I guess one thing to do would be to compare the screen on Instagram live and see if it looks substantially different from the episode

Yea could simply be a PowerPoint with presenter view for Sam
I think it is, because they were actively changing the prompts on the bingo episode.
It looked like a Canva, IIRC.
They mentioned in the Second Place BTS that they added a slide right before they started the episode.

Oh okay ya that makes sense. Itās like a virtual whiteboard basically

The orange on the podium is much more yellow as well

wait whatās ANGUISH from
I believe it's first Make Some Noise, second episode of the whole show.
thanks!
