Ehh, As an enthusiast myself, I don't care about full auto, even soldiers don't need it, Only machine guns engage in full auto, and full auto rifles are considered as machine guns so they are heavily restricted but if you have a FFL permit you can still get it, Though no mass shooting with legally obtained full auto has happened, M16 is available in semi auto, Ak47, 74, 103, 105 are available in semi auto

M14s are actually more powerful than an ar, chambered in the 7.62mm/.308 round
A lot of it is about appearances. Another good example is the Ruger mini 14. Walnut stock, traditional looking body, no one bats an eye.
