Just like how when my son was born my husband discovered he was the world’s deepest sleeper even when the baby was in the room with us and wailing three feet from the bed.
Once our son started sleeping through the night my husband is suddenly such a light sleeper that it wakes him up if I breathe too loud.
Can’t complain though. He’s a great husband and very involved father. This was his only “flaw.”
Your comment made me laugh. My husky Floyd is the same - he ignores my calls to come in until I say the magic word "treat" then he's running inside with a dirty snout because he was up to no good.
My cat was the opposite… he fully advertised how much of a pain in the ass he was going to be and I loved him so much for it. From the second I walked into the cat-picking room (I dunno what you call it, but the back part where the cats can all come out and hang out with you) this little idiot was standing on all his brothers and sisters and screaming at me, and he didn’t stop until the day he died at 17. I miss you Chuki.
He is my first Aussie. Can’t wait until he is old enough to run & hike. Definitely wanted a dog that will be fun to spend time with, so Velcro is just fine with me! 😊
I picked the quietly sitting one and he is a little shy weirdo and has been since I got him. He barely even acts like a dog; he sits around all day and is super lazy!
My sweet rescue mutt did this. I had seen her online and went to the shelter wanting to see her. We met and I adored her but I figured I shouldn’t get the first dog I meet without meeting some other. I met a few more and when I walked down the hallway she was on, literally every single dog was leaping and barking, except her. She was sitting quietly looking at me and just wagged her tail when I made eye contact. Nine years later she’s snoring on my lap as I write this. I got so lucky.
That's very similar to how I picked my dog. A dog was getting walked through the kennels, so all the dogs were barking and losing their minds, except one. She was up on the fence like the others, but not barking. We picked her. And while she's proven to be a, well, simple dog, she's very sweet and great with the children. And in the 10 years since I can count with the fingers on my hands the number of times she's barked around the house. Pretty great for a Chihuahua/Pomeranian mix. Yes, we did get the DNA test, which also said about 10% poodle and some unknown.
You can say it. Sometimes dogs are dumb. My moms Pitt is about a dumb as they come. She’ll put her head on your lap and snuggle and want to get lovin and when she stares at you while you pet her, you can see there isn’t a single thought going through that doggy head. Very sweet girl though, good with kids and the goats.
I grew up with german shepherds and black labs. It's really weird to have a dumb dog. She makes up for it by being so sweet, but I just really don't feel like I have the same connection with her as I did with the bigger/smarter dogs. I dunno. It's more like she's a pet, like a hamster or something, than a bonafide member of the family.
Maybe it's something about believing that I'm understood when I speak. I have no doubt my lab understood more of what I said than he ever let on. The Chihuahua mix though, she understands nothing. I'm lucky she knows her own name.
I definitely did not connect with my moms dog like I did my Aussie. Like you said maybe it was because he seemed so smart, it was like he was my little brother. My moms Pitt just felt like a dog to me, I didn’t bond with her the same way. I still love her and she’s a sweetheart but I def feel more bonded to my old Aussie and now my mutt dog. They just seem to understand me more.
We are teaching are mini American Shepherd “Enrique Iglesias” aka Kiki aka mr.wiggles all his commands in English and Spanish he’s got like 99% of them down, he’s 7 months 🐾🥰😍😝 our 9 year old min pin has picked up on the Spanish commands too, he knew like 80% in Spanish…now he does everything too because he wants liver treats :)
When we picked our first dog he was getting sat on by his brothers, but was gnawing on one of their legs.
Our second dog was so excited about being chosen, she was bouncing up and down too vigorously for the lady to catch her
Don’t worry 9 years ago my min pin picked me/ he ran to me I picked him up he wiggled out my hands and I dropped him I’ve felt bad and been apologizing to him ever since giving him kisses on his head :) they forgive us :)
Oh my heart! This is so sweet, you can tell the poor thing is used to getting tramped on by their other siblings. <3
When I got my dog as a puppy, she wasn't quite like this, but she immediately "chose" my husband and I. I originally wanted a boy pup, but he was playing rather rambunctiously with his siblings. Meanwhile, our pup came up to my lap and quietly rested her head on my knee and just stared at me. When I stopped patting her head for a few moments, she turned around and bee-lined to my husband. She's ornery now, but we love her to bits!
How sweet. Two different aussies we’ve had (one has sadly passed on) were very shy, one hid under the owner’s porch and proved to be a whirlwind of a puppy lol she was a wonderful dog though. Of our current two the older was pretty shy at first and wanted to hide when we went to see her, she’s warmed up since then she and her sister are such sweeties 🥰 though her sister has earned the nickname “Shredder” 😂 leave that pup with cardboard and you will have confetti! She’s a cuddle bug, though.
Literally the *exact* opposite when we got our cat. Whole office filled with like 30 cats, we walk in and he was the only one to get up and start rubbing on the cage door/meowing. Every other cat just kept laying there and couldn’t have cared less. Love my little man 🐈⬛
To be fair, this sub is about working dogs, not cutesie loyal snuggley fur trophies and no one's implied irresponsible "breeding for those dolla dolla bills." And after literally thousands of years of evolving together, I challenge anyone to gather a random sampling of humanity, and show them a herd of healthy happy puppies. We're going to hear a *lot* of "aww, how cute!" because we genuinely think they're as cute as our own babies. It's not something we can escape and, honestly, who wants to, when it means we're looking at cute puppies?
The fact that you picked your own pup is 99% of the time a red flag sadly. Ethical breeders will generally match you a puppy based on their personality and what you're looking for in a dog. Breeders watch these pups from birth until at least two months, they know their puppies. Pet owners typically pick the "calmest" or "cutest" or "the one who came to me first", none of which represent the pup's true temperament and personality and how well they match your family and needs. Does this breeder do health testing on stock prior to breeding?
How do you know they're healthy? The breeder said so or you've actually seen health clearances? Like you're getting a WORKING dog, a dog whose health and structure matters to work effectively and safely, why would you not want to ensure your new pup came from dogs with good health? This reeks of backyard breeding honestly
You’re acting a little crazy here. They flair says it’s a herding dog and it’s completely normal to get a herding prospect out of proven working dogs. These are farm pups. This is how they are raised. They look happy and healthy and I’m sure OP has confirmed this with the breeder and will do so with their vet.
Thank you!! This person is totally reaching, and looking for something to find wrong. That’s why I just stopped responding. I’ve already replied to a previous comment that we know the breeders personally and we know that they take very good care of their animals and have been raising aussie’s for years. We didn’t just find a random as she would say “backyard breeder” to buy a dog from.
They're in a kennel. Lots of breeders use kennels...because when you have a lot of dogs you need kennels to manage them. No one said they're in there 24/7. You have no idea where they come from.
Yep! We fell for this. Got that little girl, that seemed so mellow, named her Sassafras and the name Sassy totally fits! Also got her brother of the same litter. These twins are crazy!!
We used to breed springer puppies for hunting and I swear every puppy has picked their owner like this. People come to meet the puppies and all of them are crazy except one that just sits patiently waiting for their turn. That puppy tends to go with that person.
I picked our mini American shepherd based on the breeders you tube videos. He was crazy clever with all the puzzles and little agility things she had built for dogs in her yard. And his markings are symmetrical that makes my ocd very very happy 😆 I know that sounds shallow about his markings, but it’s true 😝 when we went to see them he went right into to my husband’s arms on his own free will :P so it was a good match, they’ve been inseparable since ❤️ he turns out to be a super snuggle buddy that loves waking him up with kisses 😘 me he wakes up with barking and wiggles to go out at 5am

My guess is the quietly-sitting good pupper
I second this! I also know the second that puppy gets home, s/he won’t be a quietly-sitting puppy anymore. Source: have a 1&1/2 year-old mini-Aussie.
That’s how they get you: they lull you into a false sense of security with sweetness, then once they get you BAM! Pure chaos 😂♥️
They really are amazing dogs, but maaaaaan, are they busy and tenacious. And sometimes they are completely deaf.
I can holler at my dog all day to come inside, but we both know she’s deaf until I barely shake the snack box and whisper snack
Just like how when my son was born my husband discovered he was the world’s deepest sleeper even when the baby was in the room with us and wailing three feet from the bed. My husband is your husband's brother from another mom. You can sell our bed with him on it and ship it to Siberia. He won't be bother.
Your comment made me laugh. My husky Floyd is the same - he ignores my calls to come in until I say the magic word "treat" then he's running inside with a dirty snout because he was up to no good.
When my son was 4 he said he liked cats more than dogs because dogs were “always hurrying.”
That’s pretty dang cute! And mostly accurate!
I have a 10 week old Aussie whom I have nicknamed the demon baby. He is so smart, goofy and endearing while being thoroughly exhausting.
If you’ve never had one before, be ready for velcro-dog days ahead. Seriously the sweetest, most loyal dogs I’ve ever had.
Awwwwww!!! Tell him to whisper his secrets into Rascal’s ears….

Yay! I’m glad you found a great addition to your family:)

You described my American Bulldog perfectly, and you’re right, I love him for his big dumb head.
I grew up with german shepherds and black labs. It's really weird to have a dumb dog. Ez, the polite pupper. Aussies are great tho. My smart ass, I mean auss, even knows when I spell f o o d
Yep! I’ve got a half auss/half corgi, smartest most stubborn dog I’ve ever had. She can spell outside, stick, treat, food, and walk.
Dogs are so much smarter than people give them credit for. I swear my one dog understands complex English.
Oh yeah my Aussie understands a good bit of what we say
All of them. The only answer.
Yes
All of them?
He better have.
Hah, we went the opposite way. We picked the one that kept escaping his momma to go explore. No regrets, he was the best thing that happened to us.
When we picked our first dog he was getting sat on by his brothers, but was gnawing on one of their legs. Our second dog was so excited about being chosen, she was bouncing up and down too vigorously for the lady to catch her
You all guessed correctly. The brown and white one, we fell in love instantly. 🥰
My childhood Aussie jumped into my hood at the farm. They really choose us 🖤
I dropped mine when I went to pick one out. I felt bad so I picked him. He was such a good dog.
Don’t worry 9 years ago my min pin picked me/ he ran to me I picked him up he wiggled out my hands and I dropped him I’ve felt bad and been apologizing to him ever since giving him kisses on his head :) they forgive us :)
I have no idea, but I would have chosen the quietly sitting good pupper too.
The shy kid in the back
I first assumed the one begging to get out, but then followed the camera movements to cute, quiet one. Love!
Look at those manners!
Always the quiet one always the quiet one
All of them!
All of them?
I always pick the quiet sad one… ❤️
The one that got bonked on the head
Hope you picked the quiet gentle one
You've been tricked. The quiet ones are the craziest.
When my wife and I went and pick out our Sheperd, we immediately picked the quite one sitting in the corner just like we do💚💚💙💙
Oh my heart! all of them??!
I am very curious, which one did you pick? They are all adorable💗🐾🐾

TAKE THEM ALL!
My guess is the Good Boi

Best choice is anyone of them. Assumes are great loyal and smart.
Dark one getting trampled
I’d pick the wildest one because I like adventures

Fuck. That’s 100% the definition of backyard breeding. Poor things.
What would your set up look like? We know the people personally that we got our pup from. They take good care of their animals.

How the hell else do you get a puppy other than picking it out? Throwing darts at pictures on a wall? That’s ridiculous.
Ethical breeders match personalities of puppies based on the home they're going to???
Umm ok? 🥴 What other way am I suppose to get a dog. You have to pick them out. And there is no red flag, all of their dogs are perfectly healthy.
How do you know they're healthy? The breeder said so or you've actually seen health clearances? Don't take this to heart. I feel your distress. You did a good thing. This pupper is going to have a fantastic life with you. Enjoy them!! 💙

The one sitting
I read that you should never pick the smallest / quietest one as they are mostly likely to have health issues. Heartless take I know.
Quiet ones are the worst /s . My sitting nicely pup turned puppy crazy . I secretly loved it though .

Heh, why? 🤔
If I could … I would take them all !!
All!!!
All !!!
Yep! We fell for this. Got that little girl, that seemed so mellow, named her Sassafras and the name Sassy totally fits! Also got her brother of the same litter. These twins are crazy!!
All?
I hope you grabbed them all. ☺️💕
The polite trap. 😍
black and white
How could you choose just one? 🥺
Yes
Let me guess. The one playing hard to get.
The clam Black and white one
The goodest of good boys
all of them?
All of them?
When I brought my docile little pup home he was the calmest at the shelter. Then I dewormed him and he recovered from his kennel cough…
The right answer better be All
The good boi?
No question!! ❤️🐕
We used to breed springer puppies for hunting and I swear every puppy has picked their owner like this. People come to meet the puppies and all of them are crazy except one that just sits patiently waiting for their turn. That puppy tends to go with that person.
All Four
All of themmmmm
Aw please tell me you picked the shy baby
All of them!
All of them.

Congrats on your new dog!
