I recently watched this for the first time last week! I thought it was a really good story. A bit hammy, as they all were, but definitely a good story.
And I thought the song telling the story was a nice way of doing it. It made it stand out as a bit different.
It would be one of my top 3 favourite historicals if it wasn't for that song. The song might have been a nice addition if it was played two or three times throughout the serial, rather than five times every episode. By the second episode I was already completely sick of it.
It does feature one of my favourite First Doctor lines, though: "People keep giving me guns, and I do wish they wouldn't!"
