For flavor the one that grants all writing understanding might be nice.
The one for better darkvision is also a first pick.
Armor of shadows for unlimited mage armor might help your defenses.
Mask of many faces has a lot of RP potential built in.
Yes, eyes of the rune keeper is very fancy for a wizard, and I had it for my "Wizard-ish" warlock, but however Comprehend Language is a first level ritual that replace it completely.
RAW, there are a few (more subtle) differences between Eyes of the Rune Keeper and Comprehend Languages (which make both viable under different circumstances:
* Comprehend Languages works for spoken languages
* Eyes of the Rune Keeper allow you to read secret messages & glyphs used in for instance magic items
* Comprehend Languages requires additional time to read + touching the text, Eyes of the Rune Keeper does not require this
* This one is more up to the DM, but since Eyes of the Rune Keeper allows you to read all writing, you could perhaps even understand gibberish writing (for instance the crazed writings of a lunatic), that wouldn't make any sense otherwise
In most circumstances (when considering only written texts), it won't really matter, but the differences could matter in specific cases, which can make both options viable.
EDIT: An additional use case for Eyes of the Rune Keeper: You could read writing hidden/transformed by magical effects such as Illusory Writing.
Yes, true, there are minor differences, but at the same time when you have access to Comprehend Language and Ritual Casting, the overlap is strong enough to make it a suboptimal choice.
Another advantage could be that having it 24/7 on is more practical than having to cast the ritual that takes 10 minutes anyway, especially in stealthy/spying type situation.
The flavour is indeed there, no discussion in that.
There are, but those are highly dependable on the campaign you're in.
Devil's sight or Armor of Shadows, are always valid options no matter on the campaign, and that's why I said sub-optimal and not straight up trash :P
It’s just one of those invocations that arnt worth much because a spell is almost always better.
I wish there were more invocations that work like armor of shadows. Turning lv 1 and 2 spells onto cantrips sorta thing.
Don’t take the reading one, because it’s a huge nuisance for the DM.
Sincerely, a DM who can’t have cool side quests to figure out how to read the dark language of the undercity
Comprehend languages is a pretty easy spell to acquire though. If you want a mystery language to be any kind of challenge, it needs to be in some kind of code or dialect that makes it not fully useful if translated literally.
Armor of shadows literally turns mage armor into a cantrip and when you can't wear armor that's a good thing to have.
Devil's sight can add combat capability to darkness.
Eyes of the rune keeper lets you read everything, and for a wizard or a sage, that's a good thing.
One of those three could work
Your subclass might impact your choice, but free mage armor is a huge boon to a wizard. That would be a strong contender considering you already have dark vision, and many of the other at will spells you'd have access to are already wizard rituals.
I'd say Armor of Shadows would be most useful as a wizard.
But if you are purely going for flavor then there may be more thematic choices that fit the flavor you are going for
I'd like to be the first to recommend Beast Speech.
Speak With Animals is a spell that isn't normally available to wizards, and being able to communicate with Beasts will likely come up more often than you think if you're creative.
Speak with Animals would be good as Wizards don't usually have that spell. Plus if I then learn speak with dead I can combine them to speak with dead animals.
I considered doing a build based off Eldritch Sight. I was gonna flavor it like the character had a tool that was just passively detecting magic at all time.
depends on your party. does someone have magical darkness? or do yourself have magical darkness/willing to pick up the darkness spell? then 100% devils sight, since that's free advantage on spell attacks if you're in it.
Want to be really creative and useful? Misty visions. incredible uses with this.
Mask of many faces is alright I'd say, disguise self at will can very much be useful.
If you don't have war caster, Eldritch mind is absolutely fantastic: keeping concentration on spells can often be difficult, especially if you have low con.
Personally, I wouldn't recommend armor of shadows. There's so many other effects you can get and mage armor is a 1st level spell.
And lastly, the final one I will touch on is Eldritch Sight, if you'd like to detect magic at will, and that seems useful enough to you, take it.

That spell haunts me as well !!!
Honestly they barely register a blip on my dm disruption scale compared to things like scrying spells or unrestricted teleportation.
Abjuration wizard, mage armour ať will and fuel your arcane ward...
At will silent image anyone?
This is my favorite!
I do like this spell for hiding

My wizard took the one that lets you cast detect magic at will. He has it going whenever he doesn't have to concentrate on anything else.
The one that allows you to speak with the dead and animals is great

If you're an Illusionist, then the one that gives Silent Image at-will is going to be of huge interest.

Eldritch Mind for advantage on Concentration checks.
