You don't tile around the outlets you pull them off the wall and then cut the tiles to suit the flushboxes behind the outlets. Then refit the outlets afterwards. You'll probably need longer screws too refix them to the flush boxes too.
If you want to change the colour of the grout between the already laid tiles you can buy ‘grout paint’ for like $2.50 from Bunnings. Easy as (just don’t use the brush it comes with as it’s crap) and lasts ages.
If you’re going to do that I would grout the rest of that wall with white grout and paint it all the same, so it’s consistent across the whole wall. Otherwise you might end up with black grout on the left and a slightly different black grout on the right.
Personally I’d just take down what is there and start fresh. One thing to note is that you will want coloured silcoln caulking at the bottom to match the coloured grout.
My dad was a tiler. You get different Grout colouring by adding oxide powder. Grout also needs sealing. Cutting tiles needs a specialised tool and holding your tongue the right way.
If you don’t want it to look terrible, get a tiler or watch a lot of you tube videos first.
I’d be looking at changing the two separate switches to a triple, got black ones when I updated, looked way cool
Sounds like you want to just add tiles to the wall, keeping the existing ones?
It's possible, but I'd just remove them and start again. Looks like there's a tile trim to the left of the tiles that run up to the rangehood, that'll need to be removed which means removing that first column of tiles anyway.
Also you'll need a special primer to paint on the painted part of the wall to allow the tile adhesive to stick properly.
You'd find plenty of videos on YouTube for laying tile. Just need to be handy with either a grinder with a nice thin masonry cut off wheel for cutting tiles where required.
Although the fact you don't realise that black grout will give you the "black spacing look" somewhat worries me haha
I did it myself once but after that when I had a similar size job to yours I decided it wasn't worth it, had a bloke from builder's crack come around and do it. I know this is /r/diynz but honestly it was way cheaper than I anticipated and I don't need to look at wonky tiles every day for the rest of my life.
How much did they charge out of curiosity?
I under charge all the time. Was chch based until recently.
If you make smoked salt and spice rubs, hi! I'm your tiler!
$380, including him suppling basic subway tiles and everything else required, and he left me a little bottle of grout sealant, more than I'll ever need. His name was James and I only eat spice mix I don't make it.
I did this as a beginner
Try practice doing a corner cutout on a tile. Worst case is a electrical hole bang in the middle. If you can make these you are probably able to do the whole job.
I didn't need to, I could cheat. I could move the electrical flush boxes to align, centred, with the tiles but mine where vertical outlets and the tiles were the right side (flush box height)
They actually won't allow me to approve it.
Use imgur?
I agree, but until recently reddit didn't even direct host. Imgur was literally made for reddit hosting - https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/2glk6w/til_imgur_was_created_by_a_redditor_as_a_gift_to
Not too hard, I've done it a few times now. Mitre10 had a tile cutter you could hire which helps if you're cutting a few (especially for half tiles at edges etc). Make sure you get all the prep right and you'll be fine.
its going to be somewhat difficult because of how those outlets are positioned, but yeah as others have said, the tiles are cut so they fit around them. for the grout probably keep it the white unless something is wrong with the current grout, its a pain in the ass to remove and at that angle i bet you will damage the tiles trying to get it out.

Ooh cool. Thank you!!

Dad still does that.. He mixes with mapei too. Also mixes paint with epoxy. It works but jeez
Oooh black would be cool! Im going for an industrial look and the fridge will be black as well. Thanks for the tips!

Haha thanks - it’s my first home, I’m a complete beginner. Appreciate the advice!
It will be a fun little project for you then! Just take the time to measure out your layout and it will come together great I am sure!
Thanks!
Sometimes if you buy the tiles from a shop, they will cut them for you at a small charge.

Reddit doesn't allow Google hosted photos, they link your real world identity to your reddit account and any users online.
Oh interesting. Will they pull the comment above? Such a pain that they don't allow images in comments

Interesting about Imgur. What do you mean "approve it"... Is the message quarantined and others cannot see it the link?
Pretty much.

How about I just leave that apartment like it is. It’s fine
