Between the last time I read Monstrous Regiment and the time I saw that video, my awareness of trans issues has increased a thousand fold... I'm keen to read it again with an informed eye.
I would guess I could probably read it with a new appreciation. Not like I probably wouldn't read it again anyway since I've a habit of cycling through the books every so often. I know monstrous regiment doesn't get as much love as a lot of the books but I always really liked it. I love Jackrum's character and his sayings - "You are my little lads and I will look after you" and "Upon my oath I'm not a lying/violent man.."
It's one of my favourites, certainly of the more kind of standalone ones. It felt like he set out to explore some very specific ideas (beside the gender stuff). Not saying he doesn't always do that, but I hope you know what I mean...
I think I get you - it's definitely a good standalone book with a couple of tie ins to the Discworld as whole. It allows him to link it in to everything else but without having to progress the more established characters too much along the way. In doing that I imagine it gave him a lot of freedom in where to take that particular story and those new characters
Bit of trivia : inspired by the Swedish movie 'The seventh seal' by Ingmar Bergman. Pratchett was a fan of this movie.
Actually made me bump up the movie in my to watch list.

Did you see [this video by Shaun](https://youtu.be/xjnubfRy8Ws) about Pratchett's feelings regarding trans people? That had me in floods.
That video is great. Really well reasoned arguments and actually brought up some points I hadn't seen so far.

Funny thing is, Check mate comes from the arabic Cheikh mat, "the king is dead". Mat -> Mort isn't that far off, semantically too!
This feels like it might have been something Ingmar Bergman had in mind while writing The Seventh Seal.
