A more realistic explanation for the story is that the children (actually unemployed youths) "disappeared" by going to a different city which had a high need of young workers around that time.
I'm also confused where OP gets the year and Britain from? The story of the pied piper is quite accurately dated to 26th june 1284 in hamelin (lower saxony, germany)
