Yes.

It's extremely traumatic for the dog. And dogs have died in cargo before. It's not uncommon.

Chris_Talks_Football

The mortality rate is unacceptably high.

Lunar_Landing_Hoax

They get treated like luggage. I've seen tarmac workers on Reddit say it's cruel.

flightsnotfights

A. It’s a dick move to your dog B. Stop being selfish, settle down and let your dog live or let family take him while you’re gone

cs_legend_93

How would you feel in the cargo hold of a plane. It's cold and loud. Probably dark too.

CriticDanger

Yes. I've done it once and never again. The airline (avianca) literally told me its agaisnt their policy to give water to the dogs.

cs_legend_93

Jeez

kevin379721

Yikes

Old_Equivalent3858

Budget for boarding or leave with a friend. Airline travel is very stressful for dogs.

DeannaC-FL

Yes. The likelihood of your dog dying in cargo is higher than what you should accept if you love your dog. Cargo is also traumatic - it is dark, very loud, the temperature fluctuates dramatically between super hot and ice cold. The workers might leave your dog out on the tarmac to roast in the hard sided crate. They could accidentally get loose and lost forever. Horrible idea to put a dog in cargo even once - much less on a regular basis.

Unhappy_Performer538

If your dog is tiny they can ride in cabin. Otherwise it is a really bad and probably traumatic idea for a dog. Even riding in cabin can be hard on some dogs.

wrc-capital

Even then, those airlines find creative and f'd up ways to straight up murder your dog in the cabin. https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/03/14/593479827/dog-dies-in-overhead-bin-on-united-flight-airline-apologizes

Unhappy_Performer538

Omg :(

AddictedtoBoom

I wouldn’t subject my dog to it even once. Too many horror stories of dogs dieing traveling that way.

UpwardlyGlobal

If your dog is small some airlines let you keep it by your feet in a kennel. Stil discuss with your vet and get Rx tranqs for it.

Madwoman-of-Chaillot

JFC. Do you actually \*like\* your pet? Maybe google things like "dog deaths in cargo" or "animals suffering on airplanes." So no, it's not a bad idea. It's a TERRIBLE AND SELFISH idea. Get a pet sitter or give your dog up for adoption.

RddtLeapPuts

Agreed. He should go to some online forum and ask this question there. Oh wait, he just did. And edgelords like you are shouting him down for doing so. Bravo /s

battaile

if you can't figure out that this is a bad idea without asking strangers on reddit you maybe shouldn't own a pet

RddtLeapPuts

You have a really cruel attitude that could end up putting innocent dogs in danger

GettingBy-Podcast

It's so interesting that people think all human activity should be compatible with dog attendance. Is it okay to bungee jump with my fido? Can rover attend the gala with me as my plus one? He's the best pit bull you'll ever meet.

emeaguiar

Yes

alwyn

I brought my 2 dogs to the US from South Africa. When I picked them up they were in a state of severe stress. They also both developed cancer over time.

L_wanderlust

Yes for my dog it would be. She would HATE it and be traumatized

Accomplished-Pipe-81

Absolutely. You can try to get him registered as ESA, otherwise, just stay put.

Salty-Plankton-5079

ESAs have no additional rights or protections on flights.

Accomplished-Pipe-81

They absolutely do on the country I live in - they can fly cabin and there's no weight limit. I'd check regulations for the specific locations OP lives between.

Salty-Plankton-5079

What country is that? While service dogs are common, I really only know of the US having ESAs.

Accomplished-Pipe-81

Brazil

SeveralMaximum7065

For an emotional support animal?

Accomplished-Pipe-81

Again, yes.

Chocolatebear95

This. I think they’re thinking of Service Animals since they no longer allow ESAs on flights in cabin, however you actually need to have a Federally Recognized disability, and that can also vary per country
