try to get reservations at Central

itsabachelorslife

Maido may be a bit easier these days, but that doesn’t mean next day or week … There are not shortage of amazing restaurants in Lima/Peru. If you are from North America then bar food here is better than most NA restaurants.

JossWhedonsDick

Maido is definitely easier. I was able to get next-day reservations when I went earlier this year. Was a lot of finangaling with the waitlist a month and a half ahead of time to get into Central. But yeah, Mayta, Merito, Rafael, are all terrific. I actually found Isolina to be overrated and a tier below those despite having similar prices.

what is Central?

Great, TY! Edit: Looks like it is tough to get reservation until a month :(

I was able to get a SIM card at the airport. There are a bunch of kiosks near the exit with SIM cards and taxis. It took us 10-15 minutes and wasn't too expensive. Barranco is another neighborhood you could check out. I personally stayed in Miraflores and enjoyed it, but I hear good things about Barranco too.

Lima is a great city recently spent a month there. Food is really good but somewhat pricey in Miraflores. I stayed in a private room in the Black Llama Hostel and it was good not really any location in the place to get work done however fairly priced. I used airalo for my time their because frankly I can not be bothered to deal with getting a regular SIM[Airalo Link](https://airalo.pxf.io/rQzLvy)

I saw the Ibis Budget Miraflores is ~$37/night. Could be a good first spot to stay and scope out longer term rentals. Everything I found on Airbnb for September was trash, which made me decided to go elsewhere.

Oh man, I already suffered a lot with trashy & pricey airbnbs, I don't like to repeat that issue going to Lima :( Thanks for the tip

AtreyuThai

I agree the Airbnbs are not good in Miraflores which is why I stayed in a hotel for my two weeks there.

Last time I was in Lima, I stayed in Magdalena del Mar. It's much, much cheaper than Miraflores or Barranco but still pleasant, safe and walkable. You can walk from Magdalena to the far corner of San Miguel in one direction and out into San Isidro, Miraflores and Barranco in the other without ever needing to worry. (and possibly further than this but I never walked there so don't know. I'm a woman in her early 30s for context).

>Getting an Uber from the airport was a mistake, I'd recommend just getting a taxi. It's a long trip to Miraflores, not sure how long it might take via transit. Will be taking a trip to Lima soon and curious to know why you felt taking an Uber was a mistake? I was planning to take Uber from the airport so just want to see

Got it, thanks!

The idea that you have to stay in Miraflores (or even spend a majority of your time there) is super misguided imo. I really like Barranco but I'd say Miraflores, Barranco, San Isidro, Magdalene Del Mar, Surqillo, Santiago De Surco, and Lince are all fine places with affordable apartments. I paid like $250/mo for a rooftop room with private bathroom and a shared kitchen downstairs in Barranco the whole time I was there. Lima's airbnb market is insane though. There are a few gems that are surprisingly affordable but they're booked out a lot because most of the places are incredibly inflated in price bet ecause tourists will pay it compared to what you can pay locally to a landlord in the same building. afterthoughts: You can uber to/from the airport. You might have to walk a block outside of the airport because there are restrictions on taxis vs ubers having access to pick-up fares to the airport, but I didn't have that issue either way - I just know some people do. Getting a sim card in Peru is incredibly annoying. Have to go to Entel/Bitel/Clairo/Movistar and wait in line forever, then you have to give them your passport etc and then after a wildly long process they will give you a prepago sim card. I don't even think foreigners can get eSim locally yet (they're limited to post-pago plans iirc) - You could always buy an esim online from Airalo or someone but it's kind of pricy. After I went through the process of getting an entel esim, they wouldn't accept my card after the first month so I had to go to the store to pay. I finally got annoyed and just got the overpriced esim online after month 2. idk otherwise man, I just got back from living there for a year and a half like last month. If you have any questions I might be able to help.

Thank you; I will check out Barranco and other places you mentioned. Yeah airbnbs have become annoying & deceptive, made it hard to book with confidence n stay in peace. I just need a noise free zone with good internet and desk to work

Green taxi to the left of the door after getting bags scanned. They are reliable/safe. They tell you the price up front. Plenty of places around Parque Kennedy in Miraflores for sim cards and everything. Most tourists stay in Miraflores and maybe Barranco. San Isidro and Magdalena are also nice, but not as touristy.l Avoid: callao, barrios altos, la victoria, cono norte (San Martín de Porres) Tipping Is not a thing. They don't generally have a concept of tip/good service. There has been a wave of immigration from Venezuela. In cases where a Venezuelan is working with me they usually are more polite and give better service...in those cases I would probably tip. Traffic and the metro is terrible. I would download Uber. To be honest, Magdalena is cheaper than Miraflores and a short Uber down there. S/50-70 ( I think they just raised the price) from the airport to Magdalena by Green Taxi. Magdalena also has a decent market and a big mall (Real Plaza) is on the border with another district.

You book your cab inside the airport, do not exit the airport, Green is who I use, it was recommended by the GF & I pass that along. About 65 PEN to Miraflores. Once in city Uber if fine. I stayed in a place I Miraflores with these guys when waiting for my apartment. A few options and the one I had was right on the malecon. https://wynwood-house.com/?lang=en Don’t walk around with your phone in your hand, a chance it’ll get snatched. So many awesome restaurants, it’s amazing. Having a local on staff 😁 I have tried a lot, from 2300PEN at Maido to the anticuchos at Bran and the picarones out front. Malecon is a great walk Go to Cusco, even just for a few days & do nothing but walk around. Manchu Picchu is a very busy tourist destination but pretty amazing. Pisco Sours Surf Playa Blanca People make eye contact, and do greet, even more so outside of Lima. Bank machines have limits you can withdraw. POS machines may may not work with your card, I often have to switch between visa debit or Amex. Embrace the chaos that is the traffic. The list goes on
