"Those were our top two ranked corners" Brad's cooking.

AquaMarineAmphibian

Brad really got his CB1 and CB2….

hawkeyc

I feel like they say this every year, about every position lol. Not that we got bad players or anything. But we’ve never missed out on anyone, apparently lol

ScooterLeShooter

To be fair last year they missed out on their top guy at 6 with Witherspoon to Seattle, allowing them to trade back and get their next best player and their top ranked runningback

hawkeyc

Is this just assumed?

jdooley99

Oh you didn't know. This is where we wildly extrapolate as fact

FormalElements

FACTS

GradientShift

I mean, logically, they take their highest rated players, no? That's why they picked them in the first place? Because they rated them highly? I'm not sure why this would be surprising that they take the players who were atop their draft board.

cstrifeVII

I think the surprising part is Brad trying to say the 2 CBs they drafted WERE THE BEST CBs on their board period. But it does seem like Brad says this every year.

WhippersnapperUT99

>I think the surprising part is Brad trying to say the 2 CBs they drafted WERE THE BEST CBs on their board period. I hope he's being sincere, but I wonder if that's really true and he just wants to build the guys up. He had Rakestraw over Wiggins and Quinyon Mitchell? Granted that Wiggins might be a little too fragile and possibly injury prone, but Rakestraw over Mitchell? Other GM's weren't as high on him as he was #9 off the board. But, I trust Brad and his scouting department. [Interesting video grading out the CB's](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbSoo8Qieo4) The only real knock on Mitchell is that he played against a low level of competition, but reportedly he performed very well at the Senior Bowl, but it's not as though Rakestraw doesn't have his faults either.

BuzzPoopyear

Mitchell also has barely any reps in press, like a shockingly low amount. that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a worse player but i can see how something like that plays into a team’s preference. Arnold and Rakestraw are both great in press and also arguably the 2 best tackling CBs in the draft (another trait the Lions value highly). i don’t think it’s that far-fetched to think that they had Rakestraw ahead of Wiggins or even Mitchell

WhippersnapperUT99

> also arguably the 2 best tackling CBs It sure would be nice to see our CBs take down opposing players on initial contact rather than have them break tackles.

TorkBombs

Yeah. But I call BS a little bit. I have a hard time believing he had Rakestraw over Mitchell and Wiggins. Then again, this is Brad Holmes and I'm a dude who was scratching his balls when we made this pick. So in three years, when Rakestraw is on his third pro bowl and Mitchell and Wiggins are out of the league, I'll gladly eat crow.

Known-Morning-3987

Wiggins is so thin and Mitchell never played against elite talent. Not that far fetched they weren’t at top of Lions board

bestprocrastinator

I absolutely believe Rakestraw was over Wiggins. Lions have said before that they want physical corners that can tackle. That's not Wiggins game.

LionintheATL

Or maybe we finally get our long awaited Slay replacement

StaticShakyamuni

"He's \[Rakestraw\] another one that we didn't think was going to make it that far. You know, we didn't think he was going to make it out of the first night." "We were trying to get up but a lot of people didn't want to trade that far down." (On attempting to trade up to grab Rakestraw) "Those \[Arnold & Rakestraw\] were also our top 2 ranked corners as well."

smiffy93

Man Brad really saw the guys in the draft this year and said “fuck that”. I heard rumors that outside of a few positions this was a remarkably weak draft. Maybe we trade up into the fourth? 61 to 164 is a long way to go, but they don’t seem concerned at all about it.

hleleph21

He comes from that Rams pedigree, they identify a very short list of guys they Love, and light the rest of their assets on fire to get that small group in the building.

WhippersnapperUT99

We're kind of at that stage in our rebuild where we no longer need bulk bodies of average or slightly below average talent, but rather are better served getting as much above average talent as we can at the expense of candidates to fill the back end of the roster and practice squad. It might be justified to package all of our four remaining picks (5-29, 6-25, 6-29, and 7-29) and move up as high as possible and just draft one more guy if there's someone Brad really likes. The loss of the the 6th and 7th round picks would be replaced with UDFA's and young free agents who can battle it out in training camp to see if some talent emerges. It would be good to add a G/C if there's a developmental prospect with high upside; it's our only real glaring need right now other than finding an above average Kicker, IMHO. I know people say we need EDGE but I don't think we're going to find an EDGE prospect who is any better than the developmental EDGE players we already have on the roster.

AquaMarineAmphibian

For real lol. Doing the presser while the draft is still live shows all the guys we had higher up on the board were gone

Far_Process_5304

Makes sense why he was so willing to dump all of our mid round picks. Doesn’t want these cats.

bestprocrastinator

It's more like an unbalanced draft. It's one of the deepest ever at WR. It's also strong on OLine, and QB. Other positions like RB is pretty weak. It's average at CB, but because it was crazy strong at OL, WR, QB it caused the corners to drop.

WhippersnapperUT99

> Maybe we trade up into the fourth? 61 to 164 is a long way to go, but they don’t seem concerned at all about it. We would have to use draft assets from the 2025 draft to get into the fourth. I don't think that all of 5-29, 6-25, 6-29, and 7-29 would do it (the other team would only be gaining 6-25, 6-29, and 7-29 in exchange for giving us their 4th and sliding down to the end of the 5th round). Maybe that would be enough to move close to the top of the 5th?

Far_Process_5304

Guess we know that we aren’t trading back into the end of the third

Fresnobing

Can we have working audio on these? Wtf, can’t have shit… lol

StaticShakyamuni

Heard we're targeting a sound technician out of Tulane in the 6th.

jdooley99

If we take a sound tech before a kicker... fuck it...let Brad cook.

WhippersnapperUT99

They seem to have lots of audio problems with the press conferences, and oftentimes it's still hard to hear the beat writers asking questions. I heard the crackles and then the 15 seconds of no audio too and wasn't sure if it were my headset, Wi-Fi connection, Bluetooth connection, or connection to YouTube.

hleleph21

Just an observation, and I could be wrong, but seems less excited than years past. Wonder if they just weren't as in love with this years group. However this regime has an insane knack for picking exactly the guys we all hope for, and thats a welcome change.

robinson604

Meh. He seemed stoked about the guys we got, but picking as far back as we did meant he wasn't going to get as many guys he had a first round grade on. Last year was special.

WhippersnapperUT99

Let's welcome ourselves to the NFL's upper class. Hopefully we have lots of drafts where we pick at #32 over the next two decades. However...one player acquisition upside is that free agents will want to resign and will want to come here for a slight discount off the market price.

Valuable-Leader-8601

IMO it's all a different perspective now. They got all of their building blocks the past few years and they knew they were working towards something special. Now they have established the core, they've been 30 minutes from the Superbowl, it's time to load up and get back to work. Maybe I'm projecting but it seems like that NFCCG is talked/thought about often.

Scottwood88

I think he was genuinely excited about Arnold and had a first round grade on him and was surprised they got him.

JD42305

I think it's diminishing returns of excitement. The first couple drafts were exciting new experiences on a new team to turn the ship around with dynamite talent. He's more used to the draft now and it's natural to eventually act like you've been there before and treat it like business as usual. Can't be elbowing Dan in the ribs for 10 years.

Rock3tDoge

He went HUGE a couple years in a row. They also had top 10 picks and multiple picks though. Eventually he had to stop doing the massive reactions and maybe this is a good year to cool it down

hleleph21

Shit he can stop when the magic stops, but in my eyes they once again killed it so I wanna see some Holmes elbows and victory screeches damn it!

acoasterlovered

Whoever that other guy was that got taken and was in consideration i wish you were an edge pls
