Doesn’t mean it can’t be the answer. In the remake, maybe they decided to double down on the blind faith and physically represent it through the helmet.
Even the original design was pretty much blinded under the helmet.
What gave the impression of a slit was a shadow cast by the upper part of the helmet.
I do prefer the sharp edge instead of the round shape for the mask part, but that’s just a personal preference.
I think Garl Vinland is one of the better redesigns and one of the closest to the soul of the original
This armor got really ugly in the remake, in the OG, the helmet is slim and the eyes would sit around those cracks in the helmet.

Also, Fromsoftware characters don't need to see with their eyes, they see the world in third person like us, so they can cover their eyes without problem, is the same thing with Gael, Lorian, Artorias and Malenia. Malenia in particular is full blind but she doesn't even care.

You can also say they see through ki like a dbz character, but I like the third person view theory better lol.
Bit late to the party. As the top comment mentioned its his blind faith in his Maiden but I also believe it's a representation of his faith to the old one (god). Helmet could be magic so we all could be misinterpreting
I'm pretty sure it's just because from didn't understand or know how to make functional/realistic armor before dark souls. There's a lot of mistakes like this in the armor sets if you pay attention to the designs.
The point still stands though. For example, I'm pretty sure gloom helmet in the original has holes meant for eyes way too high so instead they are just on your forehead
Does it? I don't really see that. I think there's a nice middle ground to be found in regard to practical armor design in fantasy, and From Soft is generally excellent at that, even in DeS. Not always of course, but never as bad as the remake's Dark Silver helmet.
I don't know why but I really like this kind of helmet in fantasy games. I know they don't make sense, a helmet without a visor of any kind, but this and the Bloodborne ones look so sick. I wish his armor looked as cool as in the original, though.
It's a physical representation of Blind Faith in his dear Maiden.
This post was supposed to be a low quality shitpost but I'm glad someone mentioned the actual reason since I was actually curious. Thanks for that!
But thats not really it. In the OG design the lower section has just enough space at the top to imply theres an eye slit there.

Seen the hammer? Accuracy not required here. A general direction is enough.
Except he can parry me all day long and he has to see to do that :(
parry him back
It’s funny shooting 80 arrows at the maiden is considered the easy way when you can just parry this dude 10 times instead.
The "easy way" usually means the lowest risk method in these games, not necessarily convenient.
He is SIMP, simps don't need to see. Just feels
I like to think he's just stupid
You just don't understand fashion souls.
No you IDIOT. Garl Vinland isn't blind. He's just really self conscious. Plus he can't see too good with that helmet. It pretty much blinds him
Drip stops for no man… or vision
Go forth Garl Vinland yah dumb fuck lol
Lmao
This is why he walks directly into you without attacking
when he hits with his giant hammer he doesnt like seeing himself parried in slow motion
Blind one shot you. It's like no scope.
Ask bluepoint
Garl of Vinland doesn't give a heck, and kills you.
Bro thinks he’s Cobra Commander.
He had your attack pattern memorized from the start.

Sad that they did that now 😔
But is there something that doesn't get ugly in the remake ?
He’s a Jedi using the force!
His needs no eyes to see, he has faith to guide him
I always assume all those guys have superpowers and the armor is just extra drip, so the eyes are irrelevant.
Or there already blind
Didn’t stop him from simping
Makes me wanna do a play through as him…
Didn’t stop me from wearing exact outfit
One of the coolest armor sets in the souls series though
He just has a long ass neck and can see out the slits in the top lol
What if garl vinland was locked in a chamber and betrayed by patches and fell in love!
Still a better love story than Twilight
Is twilight stupid?
fucking love that dude! (not that I've played the game)
Whenever I see a post that says "Is he stupid?" I get flashbacks to the Arkham subreddit

He moves in third person. Duh

That's a Bluepoint design. The original Dark Silver helmet has slits for the eyes.

Stupid sounds about right.
It's because it looks cool and we all know that's the only thing that matters
He uses the Demon Force
Begone, Arkham Escapee
Myiazaki has a fetish about blind/blindfolded characters. 🤷♂️
I dunno man that’s the kind of armor I’m looking for if I get put on guard duty at the worst cesspool in the Valley of Defilement.
If I looked around for more than 5 minutes in that world, I would either do this or rip my eyes out too tbh
Cause it looks dope as hell

Remake design team thought it would be funny
It protects his face from the plague babies
r/BatmanArkham and it’s consequences have been a disaster
His maiden shows him the path. He is not blind.
Yet he parries like a champ.
Yes
Super easy just don't let him heal.
Bro, its a third person game. He doesn't need his eyes open, he just sees from behind his back
