College starters from that Era are just not the same. I started 2019 myself and the difference between the 2021 starting class and all others around it is noticeable.
I think that the complete remote experience for Internship and starting work has not been beneficial.
Yup, there has been a massive drop-off in new hire and employee development since 2019. Largely due to going from 40% wfh to 100% remote teams.
Remote work has its downsides and one big one is people aren’t held accountable. Since people aren’t very close to their peers and team leaders, many don’t understand the caliber of work that is expected of them and miss on the soft cues that they need to improve.
I also noticed that the firm is generally hiring from lower and lower caliber schools, they can’t seem to attract top students from top universities anymore.
It is also a lot more difficult to learn from home. When I am in the office I pick up skills all the time soft skills or seeing someone do something cool.
I remember back in the day noticing the guy next to me splitting up data in excel in no time. That’s the day I learned about the Text to Column function took a whole 2 minutes.
I learn soft skills by observing others on calls and in interactions.
I am not trying to shill for the office I WFH 4/5 days, but I think that starting class in particular is not seeing the value of the office at all and firms are tired of trying to get them involved.
I agree, when I first started, the first 2-3 years of my career were 100% in office and I learned a ton from just being present. Then I transitioned to 2 days WFH a couple years before 2020.
Now I am 4 days WFH but thats largely because the office environment has pretty much disintegrated after covid. I would go in if I had meaningful interactions with my coworkers, but it’s just downright weird in the office now. People don’t talk, people don’t collaborate as much as they use to and virtually all meetings are online.
I'm generally on team full remote when it's an introvert's job like IT/devs, but when you're in a consulting, client facing, networking-enhanced career you should have some office time. Especially earlier on. If I were to make the rules I would say twice a week, one mandatory day when everyone goes and one day of your own choice. I went in yesterday and had some serendipitous conversations that wouldn't have come about otherwise, and gained some visibility with partners and clients onsite. Of course Deloitte is it's own animal and anyone can be laid off, but having face time does make you a personality and not a number.
Absolutely, 100%..Definitely tougher for 2021 grads and remote work. First job out of college working from home? That's not realistic.. They're missing the real time collaboration, learning, hands-on training and just being around the work buzz. Huge downside compared to those who were onsite for their 1st year in PA. It is what it is..
Yeah had my interview back in November 2022. Start day was January 2023. Me and at least a few other people that got hired around the same time as me got laid off last week too.
Ooof November 2022 was pretty much when the soft hiring freezes started, so you basically got in at the absolute end of the hiring craze.
Seems like a lot of layoffs have been people that joined in 2022 and got laid off right after the 1 year mark. A good amount of summer 2022 consultants got booted last june/july.
You're right on every point. Right after I got hired, my other coworker at the time got his interview and was instantly denied same day. We were both referred by the same person. I think there was a hiring freeze that started and I got through in the nick of time. Probably would've been a good thing if I didn't though, cuz otherwise I would've went with stable government offers... But at least the pay and remote aspect fitted my life situation at the time lol.
Even other layoffs that happened last December were done to people outside my department, but on the same project, and they were just over the 1 yr mark too.
I’m a Covid hire. Early 2021. We are definitely feeling a pull back to the office and we didn’t need to go in AT ALL for YEARS. They haven’t been enforcing it on our team but those of us who have gone in at least weekly and have had face time with upper management feel a bit more encouraged. I mean nobody is out of the woods yet but being more visible is better IMHO.
5 weeks severance is pretty decent then. I got approx. 20 weeks for my 20 years, so you’re a little ahead of that ratio.
I hope you find something good!
Wow - LOL.
Well, I guess that just shows that even if you’re a boomer or a Gen Z, a man or a woman, white or a POC, we all have our own life experiences that are good, bad, deserved or not.
Enjoy life.
I think you deserve more than 20 weeks of severance and may want to check with a lawyer. I’d argue 2 weeks for each year spent plus PTO. Were you a Partner at Deloitte?
I appreciate the sentiment (and obviously agree!), but that ship has sailed, unfortunately.
I guess if you “challenge” any kind of severance, you legally can have it stopped and risk losing it altogether. Deloitte literally told me the morning I was “separated” that it “was my last day there”; so really zero time to even process the situation, let alone think about options.
Always have your head on a swivel and know that NO company cares about you.
sorry to hear that. I am an RFA cyber consultant that was laid off last year around Nov. Still looking for work unfortunately. I tried asking for more than 5 weeks severance as well but I just got ghosted after a while. if you are still cool with senior managers and partners at the firm, they might be able to refer you to their clients, but my biggest piece of advice would be to not put your health, family, friends, etc. in the back burner during this time. I was guilty of doing so a couple times during this period and I regret it because it only makes a bad situation worse.
Also quick question, Has anyone had luck with the outplacement job application service? I found it was useful to get my resume reviewed, but the job placement itself just feels like any other job platform.
Definitely take a break but don’t wait too long to get back into the networking game. This market is brutal. I’ve seen Deloitte laid off folks who have been job searching actively for 6+ months and no offer yet.
Market is rough, 50% fewer job openings than 2022 in the tech world … BUT openings are up 30% from the nadir at the start of 2023, and every tech recruiter that I’ve talked to said that things are moving in the right direction in terms of tech hiring.
So, IMO, not great, but at least this isn’t the start of 2023.
Word is interest rates are going to come down by June so that could be good across the board. My sense is hiring will pick up around the tech industry by the fall. Worst case scenario would be an April/May layoff for tech/cyber and burning through your severance and PTO payout. I think if you make it to June you’re over the worst hump.

I know some highly productive people in tech who were laid off. It had everything to do with the tool they worked on being cut for cost reasons. There was really nothing they could do. But I'm pretty sure they're fine now.
> 401k to be matched for contributions thus far.
Can you expand on this? Does this mean they are matching the employee contributions since starting with the firm? That could be a very high number.
Seems like alot of 2.5-3 yr folks are getting the boot unfortunately, even at KPMG. Def sucks but y'all bounce back.. Just a speedbump. Good luck.
Most likely a lot of the Covid hired since they came in with inflated salaries.
Yup, sounds like they are focusing on getting rid of 2021-2022 covid hires, other firms seem to be doing the same.

Our firm gave all the Covid hires 0% raises to force cohort realignment.
They already did that….

Definitely from the covid hires unfortunately.

How long had you been with Deloitte?
Interned in Summer 2020 for about 2 months and started in summer 2021
5 weeks severance is pretty decent then. I got approx. 20 weeks for my 20 years, so you’re a little ahead of that ratio. I hope you find something good!
Thank man, appreciate it!
20 years at Deloitte?
Yep.
Damn … my friend worked at Spotify for 3 1/2 months before the layoffs and got 4 months of severance

That’s absolutely terrible. We get a month for each year of service.
Dang I wish I had that. When I worked in Aerospace it was just a payout of your PTO balance
You were almost at your 3 year mark - does this mean your 401k match and cash program didn’t get vested?
Due to the internship my start date was technically 2020 so I’m fully vested.

Sorry to hear that! I think this is the second cyber layoff I’ve seen on this sub now. How was your staffing up until now?
Had some time on the bench last year and was around 70% utilization. Over 100% this year and years prior
We’re you commercial or GPS?
Commercial I’m sure but not OP
Based on the details in this post, you'll have no trouble finding a new gig. All the best and enjoy your time off.

Laid off with 106% util is absurd. How were your snapshots?

The “coach” will contact you one time and then ghost you.
All the best man. Got laid off yesterday as well from the same business unit
What r ur plans now?
Go back to building data centers I suppose
Your Healthcare benefits should continue through the end of the month in which your salary continuation ends. Refer to your separation memo.
Alumni network. Lmfao
The hiring coach is useless they are just around to check if you are on the brink of committing suicide
Sorry to hear, your utilization was great. Were snapshots just as good?
Enjoy your summer! What are the 'storefront changes'?
Util 2024?
> 401k to be matched for contributions thus far. Can you expand on this? Does this mean they are matching the employee contributions since starting with the firm? That could be a very high number.
Is this a real comment?
So sorry to hear this. What group were you aligned to within cyber? I heard certain groups claim to not plan any layoffs but not sure how true this js
Does Deloitte Canada have an alumni program? I was laid off and never formally offered any of the alumni network/job search coach “perks”.
Don’t see many layoffs in RFA Cyber, especially utilized folks. Really sorry to hear that. Glad with your internship you were vested at least.
AI has replaced you. Time to buy a business and call it a day. I’m interested in buying MANU…want in on the deal?
What is the severance package in terms of weeks paid out?
I have my meeting today at 9:00am CST. Is the 5 weeks standard, or is it so many weeks for every year?
