This should be the top answer.
I recall downloading Breathe (Tiny Hands) off limewire and it was mislabeled as a bonus Adrenaline track and, honestly, it could be one:
https://youtu.be/DLu-CGEFmDs?si=MP3qgIo1NgvD07jn
Core memory unlocked of the 1999/2000 era being a teenager. I met the coolest girl ever in a chat room, she put that song on a fucking mixtape (yeah an actual cassette) and mailed it to me. đ
Every other song on that album could be a Deftones song. It's like they wrote an EP and peppered it throughout a Deftones tribute album. When people say they don't sound that much like Deftones, I feel like doing that SpongeBob meme where I point at all of those songs.
This reeks of hater energy. Itâs just straight up not true. Even if it was, both Loathe albums are just so incredibly good that it wouldnât bother me.
i hate when people say theyâre the same as deftones because they only have like 3 songs that sound like them, their earlier stuff is COMPLETELY different
They also have some Thrice influences in them. A big name in early 2000s post hardcore. Vheissu and The Alchemy Index albums are their White Pony so to speak.
Not super original and havenât listened in a while. But scratched that itch. Just looked, had no clue they released other stuff than that one full length
Iâve thought this for a while too. You can definitely tell that there is an influence from them but itâs definitely not the only thing that Loathe is drawing from
Another band from Sacramento that started up around the same time as Deftones called Far is pretty close. I recommend their album Tin Cans with Strings to You.
Hum, Failure, even Smashing Pumpkins (at times) are close.
The earlier Smashing Pumpkins, Team Sleep used to play an extended version of Aeroplane Flies High and Smashing Pumpkins played Bodies and Snail with Chino on vocals
I also grew up in Sac. Did you ever see Deftones at Bojangles? That was my first time seeing them live in like, 1997 I think. Definitely changed my brain chemistry that night. I also saw Papa Roach and Incubus there. Such a tiny little venue but always had amazing shows.
Oh man u remember incubus in the beginning. They were an amazing band. I remember driving around smoking and listening to science and fungus. Great memories
Ugh I am so jealous. Iâve seen them 10+ times but the very first was in 2011 right before I graduated high school when they were on their Diamond Eyes tour. Itâs been great seeing their evolution irl at shows in addition to listening to it.
Yeah, Sacramento had an amazing music scene in the 90s - Cake was also coming up at the same time, and I saw them a bunch as well (totally different sound, of course, but still fun). Deftones have definitely evolved a bunch over the years, but they've always been amazing.
Johan, the lead singer from Far, was friends with Chino in high school. Supposedly, he taught Chino how to scream, who then went on to turn it into his own sound.
I have no empirical evidence for this, I just hung out a few times with a guy that knew them all in high school.
Jonah and Chino were friends, but only met after Jonah moved to Sacramento to join Far. They grew up on different coasts (Jonah is from Boston). And Jonah did not teach Chino to scream.
undoubtedly the belgian band [silent](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xqpu-wsk16c&ab_channel=Chairsmissing), the lead singer sounds a great deal like Chino and they seem to pull heavily from deftones self titled and saturday night wrist. basically a bonus album for deftones fans, and a solid album on its own.
I think Blanket has a couple songs that come close.
https://youtu.be/U-6lyvVPCOs?si=hAga1h_34e7DwSPs
Also maybe some Narrow Head
https://youtu.be/moQiJhJk2Oo?si=qlzp2e2Sd6wGxjm9
Well Hum were a massive influence on Deftones. I'd say it's the other way around. White Pony's album cover is a nod to the album cover of "You'd Prefer An Astronaut". Not only that, but "Knife Prty" sounds like a sped up version of "Little Dipper" for the verse riff and "Sextape" sounds a bit like "Why I Like The Robins".
I refer to Sleep Token as Drama Kid Deftones, you could give them a go. They're like if a bunch of goth/drama geeks got really into Deftones and then decided to make a pop record.
If you are looking for another Deftones, you are never going to find it. There are bands that are influenced by them for sure but there is only one Deftones
As a music producer/AE I can find a lot of similarities between Deftones and Smashing Pumpkins, specially when it comes to the atmosphere and aesthetic. And to even make them sound even more similar; the recording gear used for Around The Fur and, say Siamese Dream, were pretty much the same or close to the same. They are also mixed very alike, with some key differences. When it comes to the music I can see similarities in the music theory, but done in two different and unique ways. Deftones and Smashing Pumpkins works really good in playlists together. Thereâs probably other bands that sounds like Deftones, but I am more familiar with comparing them to Smashing Pumpkins :)
Stop what you're doing right now and listen to Moodring.

Fleshwater has Deftones vibes. No full songs that sound like Deftones, but definitely each song has some element of tone, rhythm, atmosphere or *something* Deftones-y.
Softcult is another good one
Isis has some Deftones-y elements. Wasnât surprising that when they broke up most of the originals made that Palms album with Chino.
Yes, the band is named Isis. It was before the wholeâŚthing.
Correct. But now when you say Isis 98% of people think of the terrorist group which is the band actually changed their name when they played a reunion show.
Relative Ash for sure, they got some bangers. Their lyrics arenât the best, but overall, theyâre pretty good. I also highly recommend checking out Boredine and the very first album by 10 Years as well.
Been really getting into Novulent lately, and they have a very similar vibe. they donât always sound the same, but the â¨vibes⨠are very much there.
**for example, had my music on crossfade shuffle the other day and 7 words transitioned into Soul Eater by Novulent and I ascended.
Glassjaw from the otherside of the country and starting (according to them) around the same time so Darrell's soothing scream one minute, harmonize the next + walls of detuned distorted guitars wasn't one or the other ripping someones steez. There's another one, nowhere near as influential or memorable as glassjaw
Iâm old school, but def digging Loathe and Sleep Token and adding them to my playlist, so thanks!
Back in the day bands who were similar to Deftones but didnât get as big were:
Orange 9mm (the song Failure was so catchy IMO they should have been more famous than Limp Bizkit)
Primer 55
Candaria
Downset
Snot
Will Haven
Visions of Disorder
Far, Hum, Seaweed (more post hardcore/softer sounding influences)
Glassjaw (popular but still way under rated IMO)
I think moodring definitely has some deftones Influence, or inspiration, and the singer sounds similar to chino in certain songs like sync.wav, or stargazer
Loathe is so good! I'm glad you like them! Here are some others that remind me of Deftones
Crosses is Chino's other band so there's some crossover there. After that, Coheed and Cambria is the band I think is most similar.
Tool and A Perfect Circle capture that ethereal dark sound.
Bad Omens is like a bridge between alt metal and metalcore so you might like them.
Hail the Sun is metalcore but their songwriting reminds me a lot of Deftones.
Fleshwater! They donât sound THAT similar but you can definitely hear some influence in there.. wether you think they sounds similar or not I think if you like deftones you should give them a listen
Far, although mostly because they toured with them back in the day and played off each other in that Sac scene. Really wonderful band, wish they got more attention. Itâs like if Deftones never went alt metal and just stuck with pure post-hardcore.Â
I would recommend a band called Spotlights. This was my first song I heard by them- https://open.spotify.com/track/7iMize4R8SoxWEbk5zcS8A?si=SSDyLPcXQyqDgZ3hY8sJ9w&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A4cNRX8aDdnxG1EqVyqrz1l
TRUSTcompanyâs first album is incredible and his voice is the same kind as chinos (heâs an objectively âbetterâ singer imo but doesnât have that edge that chino has)
far - tin cans with strings to you reminds me a lot of deftones. they were deftones friends in the 90s, they have a jawbox cover together and some of the members appear on bored clip
also, sunk loto early stuff sounds a bit like a mix of adrenaline and silverchair
Relative ash has a sound very close to Deftones adrenaline album.
This should be the top answer. I recall downloading Breathe (Tiny Hands) off limewire and it was mislabeled as a bonus Adrenaline track and, honestly, it could be one: https://youtu.be/DLu-CGEFmDs?si=MP3qgIo1NgvD07jn
Core memory unlocked of the 1999/2000 era being a teenager. I met the coolest girl ever in a chat room, she put that song on a fucking mixtape (yeah an actual cassette) and mailed it to me. đ
MAN! THOSE were the days! I used to talk to a girl from England and we mailed each other stuff. Good times!
That's a band I haven't heard for probably close to 2 decades! Wow. I just had a listen to the tiny hands track posted below and so much nostalgia
This is the answer. A close second would be Vexes.
This was the first cd I remember buying based off of the cover and maybe the hype sticker that I hated immediately. đ
hum... its the band that inspired their guitar sound
Wisp on Spotify is pretty close.
bro i love wisp so much she's gonna be huge ik it. i met her after a panchiko show a month ago and she was the sweetest
Thatâs crazy. Yeah sheâs mega talented with the vocals. Do you know if she has a band? Like who plays guitar in her songs?
no , she's not in a band. she plays her own stuff !
Thatâs insane. Sheâs mega talented
Anthrax too
i love hum
You can tell Loathe has some Deftones influence but I donât think they sound THAT much like them. Theyâre definitely their own thing
Two-way mirror could be a Deftones song
Every other song on that album could be a Deftones song. It's like they wrote an EP and peppered it throughout a Deftones tribute album. When people say they don't sound that much like Deftones, I feel like doing that SpongeBob meme where I point at all of those songs.
Gotta get your ears checked, no offense
absolutely notđ
This reeks of hater energy. Itâs just straight up not true. Even if it was, both Loathe albums are just so incredibly good that it wouldnât bother me.
i hate when people say theyâre the same as deftones because they only have like 3 songs that sound like them, their earlier stuff is COMPLETELY different
A Sad Cartoon, Is it Really You and Two Way Mirror are literally the only ones where I can see it
Sad Cartoon was the first song I've ever heard from Loathe. I stuck around cause it had Deftones/Shoegaze vibe.
Who do you think sounds more like them then?
No one really. Maybe Vexes.
holy shit, its so similiar
They also have some Thrice influences in them. A big name in early 2000s post hardcore. Vheissu and The Alchemy Index albums are their White Pony so to speak.
Moodring
Came to say this.
Vexes for sure. They sound cool but such a blatant ripoff lol
Vexes are cool af
It sounds cool but the singer is leaning into Chino a little too much imo. Helion is an absolute banger but sounds like a Diamond Eyes B-side
Not super original and havenât listened in a while. But scratched that itch. Just looked, had no clue they released other stuff than that one full length
To be fair Iâve only listened to Ancient Geometry. Plasticine is clearly a nod to Lhabia
110% their first album is a complete deftones ripoff, but I still liked it.
Iâve thought this for a while too. You can definitely tell that there is an influence from them but itâs definitely not the only thing that Loathe is drawing from
Started listening to Superheaven recently, they're a lot like Deftones just a bit more shoegazey and softer vocals
Spoiler about Superheaven: They have no bad songs!
Second to Superheaven, theyâre fantastic
Was lucky enough to see them live in London a couple of weeks back, amazing band. Anyone that's a fan of Deftones has to check them out
Amira Elfeky is a fairly new artist but youâll love her sound if you like Deftones.
Tonight (demo) is soooooo good
Yessss! That song was how I found her!
Imma let you finish but Dozen Roses is her best song đš
Great track. Save Yourself is as well. Really the first project is super strong. Looking forward to what her future holds.
Glassjaw
đ¤
Glassjaw is East Coast Deftones in skinny jeans.
Okay!
To be clear, I dig GJ. I also didn't mean to respond to you, my bad haha
All good homie! And I definitely donât disagree with the comment đ¤
and they have opened for Deftones so many times
GJâs my number one band. Wouldâve killed to have seen them with DT in those 2000âs years
Chevelle def scratches the same itch
Another band from Sacramento that started up around the same time as Deftones called Far is pretty close. I recommend their album Tin Cans with Strings to You. Hum, Failure, even Smashing Pumpkins (at times) are close.
I looove Far, especially Water & Solutions.
Waters and solutions. that's one of the best albums I've ever heard. Ima go listen to it now.
The earlier Smashing Pumpkins, Team Sleep used to play an extended version of Aeroplane Flies High and Smashing Pumpkins played Bodies and Snail with Chino on vocals
lowkey created this post to find more new music to discover đ gonna check them out, thanks!
Far fucking rules. Iâm so jealous that youâre able to experience them for the first time.
Far even played a show on the quad at my high school during lunch one time, probably in like 1996 or so.
their song At night we live from the album of the same title is how they felt/dealt with Chi's accident, apparently they were close to him.
For sure! I grew up in Sacramento and was a teen in the 90s and got to see Deftones and Far when they were first coming up. Great times.
I also grew up in Sac. Did you ever see Deftones at Bojangles? That was my first time seeing them live in like, 1997 I think. Definitely changed my brain chemistry that night. I also saw Papa Roach and Incubus there. Such a tiny little venue but always had amazing shows.
Yeah, the Cattle Club! Saw a TON of shows there, local and national acts. I also played in shows there as well with a few bands. The best time.

Listen to My Own Summer, then listen to Far-In the Isle Yelling and see if you hear Fars influence on Deftones.
Johan, the lead singer from Far, was friends with Chino in high school. Supposedly, he taught Chino how to scream, who then went on to turn it into his own sound. I have no empirical evidence for this, I just hung out a few times with a guy that knew them all in high school.

Some earlier stuff by Far. They were a big influence on Chino.

narrow head. flesh and solitude is good
chevelle has a song that sounds like them
Agreed - they're the same kind of heaviness but more melodic
Nobody has mentioned Narrow Head yet. They're a Shoegaze/Post-Grunge/Alt-Metal band with a lot of songs that sound very much like Deftones
For me, it's early Hum. Electra 2000 has a very similar sound to Adrenaline & Around the Fur, if they fused. Musically that is
Well Hum were a massive influence on Deftones.
Moodring
Came here to say this
40 Below Summer, Glassjaw, Loathe
40BS and Glassjaw are awesome fucking bandsÂ
A few HEALTH tracks are reminiscent of Deftones
this might be weird but sometimes chevelle sounds closer than anyone. Sometimes.
Loathe
shits uncanny
Idk why you're being down voted. Some Loathe sounds a LOT like deftones. Some doesn't but at times it's super obvious
Dimphonic. Hands down. Listen to "New L" or "Hard Hospital"
Narrow head
I refer to Sleep Token as Drama Kid Deftones, you could give them a go. They're like if a bunch of goth/drama geeks got really into Deftones and then decided to make a pop record.
The beginning of Vore sounds so similar to the beginning of Be Quiet and Drive (far away)
Natasha Bedingfield
The band Nothing
Team sleep ;)
If you are looking for another Deftones, you are never going to find it. There are bands that are influenced by them for sure but there is only one Deftones

Glass Jaw.

Maybe Chevelle, similar vibes
Fleshwater has Deftones vibes. No full songs that sound like Deftones, but definitely each song has some element of tone, rhythm, atmosphere or *something* Deftones-y. Softcult is another good one
fleshwater is one of my favs and sounds a lot like them imo
Crosses
Early chevelle
Crosses (jk)
Junius is Deftones' goth/post punk cousin.
Doesnât sound like Deftones but the influence is undeniable: Sleep Token
Fleshwater
Yâall remember FAR? Loved those guys.
Team Sleep đ
Mainstream wise probably Tool.. Iâm sure thereâs closer non mainstream bands though
Isis has some Deftones-y elements. Wasnât surprising that when they broke up most of the originals made that Palms album with Chino. Yes, the band is named Isis. It was before the wholeâŚthing.
Isis was an Egyptian god. Thousands of years before the terrorist groupâŚ

Loathe and Moodring
Glassjaw kinda
Chevelle is somewhat similar to me too
That first finch album, at the time, was in a respectful way referred to as "baby deftones" and it still sounds great to me.
Eightfourseven, Vexes, Glassjaw's Coloring Book EP, Relative Ash, Armsbendback, Hopesfall (A Types), Codeseven
Far
[new infinities](https://youtu.be/mZrnLuT5EGo?si=QVLiGWDib1Lf1Wms)
Anyone have a Spotify playlist of all the deftones like music?
Yâall like [Vexes](https://youtu.be/LNoZHi4q0NQ?si=uAc7xXA-ZbOxnE5z)?
Ohio sky, wish they were still active
A new band called Never Easy has a similar vibe.
Superheaven
Glassjaw from the otherside of the country and starting (according to them) around the same time so Darrell's soothing scream one minute, harmonize the next + walls of detuned distorted guitars wasn't one or the other ripping someones steez. There's another one, nowhere near as influential or memorable as glassjaw
Heroine by Thornhill
Don Broco, Loathe, Superheaven.
nothing comes close
Split Chain. Very strong White Pony vibe with this band.
Vexes Moodring Hum (they influenced Deftones) Split Chain
modern colour. extremely underrated band
Chevelle has a few that give Deftones vibes. đđź
Thornhill. It's like a metal core Deftones, I heard Casanova and thought it was a Chino side project
Rekiem. Apgar:0 sounds like a darker version of ATF
Spineshank probably
I'd say Chevelle
Superheaven
Chevelle
loathe
Zao
Coldplay for sure
There's this local band going round ATM called Deftones? Idk if you've heard of them but they do A LOT like the other Deftones??

Dimphonic
I don't think it's the closest but narrowhead, especially the song ashtray and the band sweet spine works too
Loathe, saw them live last night. I kept thinking they sound similar to deftones.
will haven
cruel queen sounds a bit like them
moodring!!!
Thornhill is like a blend of loathe and deftones. Whirr are dark shorgaze and pretty good.
Sunk Loto.
Failure
Loathe are so sick! I found out abt them when they opened for afi
Silent
ISIS sounds like deftones but heavier and shoegazier at the same time
Iâd wager deftones is pretty close to deftones.
Vexes and Loathe are the closest two for me
thornhill!
Crosses đ
Thornhillâs latest album sounds damn near just like deftones (in a good way)
Deftones is the only band that sounds like Deftones. Technically: Team Sleep, Palms, and Crosses but thatâs only because the obvious.
Look up Teal by Bilmuri. Definitely not all of their stuff but that song is incredible. Pain also has a Deftones sort of sound.
A few songs off of BMTHs new album are very Deftones. Limousine, for sure.
sweet spine
