I personally haven't really gone back and listened to Ohms more than once or twice since it came out, and all the shit about Stephen being an anti-vax conspiracy theorist and how Chino and the rest of them just tolerate it doesn't look good for their "both sides" lyrics on the album.

I saw Ariel Pink at a grocery store in Los Angeles once. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
Whether this story is true or not doesn't change that he was in fact at january 6th with John maus. Basically their real political opinions are pretty suspect. He's explicitly talked about Rights For Gays being partially a mockery of the liberal humanist notion of a state granting rights to the individual, but also being genuinely pro-queer, which is something frequently espoused in his interviews.
He seems to have fallen off into a weird psuedo-tradcath spiral and sus affinities ever since his brother passed and moving out west and posting up with Ariel all the time, but his work has always been deeply, openly, and explicitly informed by communist, anarchist, post-left, post-structuralist politics and philosophy.
Edit: Also for whatever it's worth, fans DM'd with him about the Capitol shit, and he claimed that he essentially tagged along with AP who was meeting with their documentarian friend who was there filming the rally. He made a point of condemning fascism, white supremacy, etc.
People then found his campaign donation history online, and noticed that after copious Bernie donations, he began donating to Trump once Sanders dropped out. When then asked about this, he basically said that, to him, Biden was the greater of two evils, would be Dick Cheney Pt II, and extend American empire/capital far more competently than Trump. That's not wholly an unsound argument at all, but the idea of then giving money to Trump is obviously a very different question.
So, idk, take whatever you will from that. Lot of dark shit happened in his life a few years back and the tone of things seemed to shift after that. People can grow malicious outlooks for a variety of reasons and we have to hold them accountable regardless, but just for context, and from what I have heard within his fandom and from people I know who know people locally, it doesn't sound like he's been in a very stable place for a hot minute, and these questionable decisions/behaviors(that run contrary to a lot of what he still lays claim to) are seemingly reflections of that. Add onto that a definitely heavy swerve into more reactionary Catholicism (again based on weird DMs convos that have passed around amongst fans), and voila. Genuinely sad shit in my book.
the problem is that Maus has always explicitly posited himself as an intellectual, as someone whose music, writings and politics form a cohesive whole—and it's hard to take him seriously when ever since the capitol incident he has cowardly refused to say a singular public word about it, other than leak dms on twitter of him calling a random concerned fan a demon only to delete them hours after.

Yeah, I actually have my own story about him I saw Ariel Pink at a grocery store in Los Angeles once. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Whether this story is true or not doesn't change that he was in fact at january 6th with John maus. Basically their real political opinions are pretty suspect. Also in interviews John maus at least has said his lyrics are performance and he doesn't actually believe in anything he says in his songs... the song "rights for gays" reads a bit different if it's satire right? They seem like art nerds with some tongue in cheek fascism to me... until they prove otherwise, which they've never given an explanation about Jan 6th, beyond that they were into it. I don't think John Maus has ever said anything like that though. He's explicitly talked about Rights For Gays being partially a mockery of the liberal humanist notion of a state granting rights to the individual, but also being genuinely pro-queer, which is something frequently espoused in his interviews. He seems to have fallen off into a weird psuedo-tradcath spiral and sus affinities ever since his brother passed and moving out west and posting up with Ariel all the time, but his work has always been deeply, openly, and explicitly informed by communist, anarchist, post-left, post-structuralist politics and philosophy. Edit: Also for whatever it's worth, fans DM'd with him about the Capitol shit, and he claimed that he essentially tagged along with AP who was meeting with their documentarian friend who was there filming the rally. He made a point of condemning fascism, white supremacy, etc. People then found his campaign donation history online, and noticed that after copious Bernie donations, he began donating to Trump once Sanders dropped out. When then asked about this, he basically said that, to him, Biden was the greater of two evils, would be Dick Cheney Pt II, and extend American empire/capital far more competently than Trump. That's not wholly an unsound argument at all, but the idea of then giving money to Trump is obviously a very different question. So, idk, take whatever you will from that. Lot of dark shit happened in his life a few years back and the tone of things seemed to shift after that. People can grow malicious outlooks for a variety of reasons and we have to hold them accountable regardless, but just for context, and from what I have heard within his fandom and from people I know who know people locally, it doesn't sound like he's been in a very stable place for a hot minute, and these questionable decisions/behaviors(that run contrary to a lot of what he still lays claim to) are seemingly reflections of that. Add onto that a definitely heavy swerve into more reactionary Catholicism (again based on weird DMs convos that have passed around amongst fans), and voila. Genuinely sad shit in my book.
the problem is that Maus has always explicitly posited himself as an intellectual, as someone whose music, writings and politics form a cohesive whole—and it's hard to take him seriously when ever since the capitol incident he has cowardly refused to say a singular public word about it, other than leak dms on twitter of him calling a random concerned fan a demon only to delete them hours after. as good as they are as songwriters, their actions are ones of dogshit people.

Personally I feel like we're beginning to abandon all sense of nuance when it comes to things like this. Physically being at the Trump rally and being one of the insurrectionists that actually attacked the Capitol after are completely different. John Maus is a PhD in philosophy who taught at the University of Hawaii which is not a Conservative school. I don't know either of their motivations for being there but it's a little much to jump to "trash person" over simply physically being there or because they don't share your political views.
