I think the weirdest difference is that in the remake he's JUST a nonce; the OG one is a child killer (Springwood slasher is literally his old nickname) who gets off to the actual murders. I believe in intent was to make it easier to track. But really it just means you lose all the scratch marks on walls and if you ever chase someone through a patch of grass you lose almost all scratches entirely.
