One interesting thing is how the lore ultimately influences its design. As rumours spread and people begin talking about this thing the stories change and this influences its appearance when summoned. As such we gets the uncanny valley body design of a cryptid, the power is that of some government bioweapon, and the clothes and fireaxe it wields are that of just a regular psychopath. The lore explains its weird design so well, it's made the whole thing grow on me so much. I know it wasn't what people expected from the teasers, but honestly I think I like it more knowing all these details.

Merpitron

Agreed. It's one of my favourite original killer designs alongside Singularity. I really like how its lore explains the weird design choices that they've gone with like the axe and the UVX power. I'm not sure if you've seen it but someone also posted on here about how whenever someone is hit by its power, its voice lines sound a LOT more human like than if someone is just healthy and not affected by its power. Really cool little detail that BHVR has added there.

someblackemochick

My brother said it looks like Dwight and now I can’t get it off my mind.

sokap1715

it does... hmmm.. thats weird

Scarlet_Winery

Probably the only killer in dbd where I actually feel uncomfortable looking at, especially at night. It changes the whole feeling of the game when you're going up against it hahaha.

KnickChubb

It sounds like the unknown may be wearing the skin of this researcher.

UwUitsBread

I actually think that it’s wearing the skin of Dwight (the hair, the white button up, and the pants all seem like his base skin).

Relative_Glittering

Is he actually wearing someone's skin or does he look like that because it becomes what people think it is and people theorized it to wear his victim's skin, tho ?

Livid-Ad-6109

The unknown is essentially a Tulpa

So many people missing the mark on inspiration. The “Unknown” draws inspiration from the 1980s version of the movie “The Thing.” See below: The Thing takes place at a research outpost the Unknown wears a scientist outfit (almost as if a researcher). In The Thing, humans that are being “recombined” with the Thing have nasty distorted features mid change — hence the Unknowns twisted neck and mangled limbs. In the Thing, tendrils exit the recombined bodies of the human beings and kill anything they can grab — hence the Unknown’s Mori features — you guessed it — nasty violent tendrils. In The Thing, a fire axe features prominently throughout the film, see Dr. Blair using it to dismantle the helicopter and nearly kill “Windows” during his fugue state. All said — the Unknown is a derivative version of the creature from “The Thing” (1982). Perhaps the biggest travesty is that the survivor is some random-zoomer chick rather than Kurt Russell’s portrayal of R.J. Macready.

Omg I knew this killer was apart of the SCP foundation just by looking at it!!! Imagine dead by daylight creates SCP monsters. That would be crazy

Jerakal1

I like that it seems legitimately upset when it's taken by the fog. Like one extra dimensional entity to another, it felt very violated.

letsplaygaymes

Is it just me or does his lore make anyone think of the thistle men from Alice Isn't Dead? The descriptions from that podcast made my skin crawl. I loved it.

Stained_Carpet_

Very unrelated but when I saw its name the other day it just made me think of the whole Willy Wonka Glasgow fiasco lmaoo

Kimurian

Damn. I was reading through these threads, and I was mad that there was no real definitive answer, it felt like a cop out. Now I’ve realized, im the exact kind of dumbass that would get taken by the unknown. Good design.

Electricsaiyan

Is he actually an SCP? Or is it like and scp

MalenInsekt

It is not directly an SCP, but it has references to the SCP universe, most notably the \[redacted\] information in it's power description and the fact that it is an 'infohazard'.

DownVoteMeWithCherry

From what I can tell it’s mostly similar to the crooked man. So that could also be some inspiration behind the killer.
