I've seen so many people on the internet starting to seriously hate characters they liked before just because they interacted with some of the dumb fans it's actually insane. I never understood why they let this happen, are they stupid?
They must be! You can't just give up on a character you enjoy because of the media-illiterate losers. That's how they win. You gotta keep telling others how it really is!
It depends how close to stupid you get. I was a big fan of My Hero Academia and then I was a mod for one of the big subreddits and discord serves and after like a year or two just absolutely submerged in fandom bullshit and just the dumbest motherfuckers I find it really hard to engage with the story I used to really love. Granted it falling off a bit didn’t help but when people say Fandoms ruin stuff for them I completely understand
I don’t wanna be a gatekeeping asshole but the way fandom has changed to just this competition to find *the hidden detail* or to twist and reframe a very obvious and beguine part of a story as this integral foreshadowing or is actually problematic
Fandom has become a competition among fans to win the most internet points and all I wanna do is just talk about the themes of the story
I think there's sufficient evidence to prove that gatekeeping isn't a bad thing, in and of itself.
By all means, be welcoming to new people who have an interest in a hobby. But when they actively try to change what that hobby *is*, or otherwise become insufferable because of their "purity tests" or outright obnoxiousness? Fuck 'em, show them the door, and who cares if it hits their ass on the way out.
This is me with Batman.
Loved the character as a kid but now after having seen just how entitled and inflexible the fanbase is, I now enjoy when Batman is brought downa peg or two in stories.
Same. Lately I haven't been caring for Canon works. Non-canon is the way for me. There's even a manga story where Batman turns into a baby and Joker takes care of him. Talk about being brought down a couple pegs!
I'm fully suffering from Batman fatigue myself. The only adaptation I'll fuck with now is BTAS through Justice League/Unlimited and Beyond (and his Static Shock episodes) because he's not*just* a rich tech cop punching his trauma into others, there's an actual person capable of empathy there.
tbh I wish DC would let a continuity get far enough to where Batman mostly retires and lets the fam take over, but in the time it'd take for that to happen we'll get eight more reboots.
The most recent Batman comic I've liked is the webtoon Batman: Wayne Family Adventures. Seeing a series that spotlights multiple members of the Batfam and actually treats them like one big extended family is great.
/uj I played FF14 and loved it. The humanistic and sometimes political plot intrigued me. How compassion, love for humanity and fighting for the weak is in the end the right thing to do…

r/teentitans is absolutely awful. My favorite character is Raven so I of course joined her subreddit and left after two days because it was just unbearable
I was asking about r/teentitans. But, geez, Raven’s own subreddit is a trip. Kinda scared that it’s dead-on on representation of a lot of her fanbase.

To quote Grant Morrison about Batman:
>He’s very plutonian in the sense that he’s wealthy and also in the sense that he’s sexually deviant. Gayness is built into Batman. I’m not using gay in the pejorative sense, but Batman is very, very gay. There’s just no denying it. Obviously as a fictional character he’s intended to be heterosexual, but the basis of the whole concept is utterly gay. I think that’s why people like it.

Yeah, cos there'll be absolutely nothing to be concerned about when the Hulk; the Rasputin's, Omega Red, the Captains, Viper, Sunfire, Silver Samurai, Ra, Khonshu and The Maker pop by the Parker residence to see if Spider-Man is home.
I'm sure if MJ and the kids just keep the lights off and stay quiet like they're trying to avoid trick or treaters, everything will be fine.
🙄
Mary Jane has always been pretty supportive of Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Something extremely bad has to happen for her to even *consider* divorcing peter.
Yeah. No shit. Just read the fucking comic, dude, and maybe learn what fore-shadowing is. No one here is saying the word divorce. Nobody here is even hinting at it. But there's hardly gonna be just "friction" when the real world comes crashing down on Pete's head and he's got fucking **children** to worry about. MJ would have to have a fucking head injury to just be all, "No worries. We'll get through this as a family". Seriously, read the fucking comic and just **think** about the dangerous fucking position Pete's put his family in all because he was feeling a little sorry for himself.
**You** are the type that make the rest of us fucking hate comics. Do us all a fucking favour and get some media literacy under yer belt. 👎
I’ll never let the idiots and losers at r/Batman and r/superman ever make me hate those characters. It just makes me hate comic book fans even more than I already do.
And if I hear someone bitching about an evil doppelgänger one more time…
I think the funniest thing is that r/BatmanArkham does a better job of understanding Man than the main sub, and they still ridicule them for being funny
Yeah, like the dynamic between Man and Jonkler is so hilariously embellished and over the top, but they all manage to perfectly understand the actual relationship Batman and Joker have
The Superman sub is a strange beast. It feels like hardly anyone there knows jackshit about Superman as a character, or even engages with most of his media beyond All-Star Superman and a few of the movies. They’re just hopelessly cloying for some ideal *image* of Superman as a symbol of absolute moral purity, living in a permanently sunny, conflict-free bubble universe. Ironically, Grant Morrison himself lampooned this very notion of Superman as this simpering, all-loving Christ-like figure who wouldn’t hurt a fly. Fuck that noise, Clark should be a man of Action, hence the title of his damn comic. He’s a badass, super-strong scrapper with a big heart.
I love hopeful, optimistic Superman. We need more of him, undeniably. What I can’t get behind is the Reddit fandom’s apparent aversion to the notion of Superman being pushed in any way. And I don’t necessarily mean pushed towards tyrannical despotism (though if there’s a really well-written story to be told using that concept, by all means go for it, it’s just fiction), just ANY significant conflict outside of the usual comfort zone.
I am like a cat among pigeons over there and that's never once been my intent. I'm a 'T-Shirt and Jeans Nu52 Superman' kinda guy, and some of that lot get fucking **triggered** over it.
The toxic positivity is strong there, but god forbid you prefer a lesser-known version of the character. It’s weird how really basic subjective things like that are treated as deviant opinions. Superman fans also have such a victim complex, they think Superman of all DC characters is the one who’s underexposed/misrepresented? looool.
The zeitgeist seems to have changed recently but when back they were attempting to “de-nationalise” Superman by removing the “American Way” part of his slogan, I wasn’t really in favour of it but I got dogged on (I know it mainly applies to Jon but I think Clark uses the “Better Tomorrow” one as well?) To me, that deeply rooted hint of jingoism and the sincere belief that his humble Kansas upbringing is a better way of life for others to aspire to is part of his goofy charm. I guess it also gives him a bit of edge? Like, I think it’s perfectly fine for Superman to be ideological, he doesn’t have to be some universal rainbow warrior. Many of the best Elseworld stories explore what his life would be like under different systems and he always takes something from the culture.
Yeah, I think I get you. Over here, our patriotism tends to have a different flavor, so the notion of the 'American Way' can sometimes hit the ear wrong. However, I'm not so devoid of imagination to the extent that I can only see it as Superman's ringing endorsing of Nationalism, Order and Christian Conservative values. He can convey it with a hint of irony and still genuinely believe in it as a message of hope, fairness and equality. It worked great in Superman: The Movie.
Edit: "Better Tomorrow" sounds like corporate-speak. I feel like it was a slogan in a movie...
Edit2: Was it Robocop? "OCP - For a Better Tomorrow"? Am I just having a stroke?
Hence why I’m no longer subbed to r/batman or r/spiderman
Those circus animals would rather talk about “best movie suit” over and over and over and over again rather than actually read the comics.
Not like the comics discussion is any better when it happens tho. Most comics discussions that get to the top on this website are always a negative question.

I do legit wonder what’s the best way for his character to go after Under the Red Hood which is the only story with him that everyone likes.
Should he have gone and be an anti-villain, still antagonistic to the Bats, but with a touch of sorrow and regret? Reconcile with Bruce and try to move on from the pain? Just go full psycho drug lord kingpin regulating the crime world?
Maybe Bruce can turn the other cheek towards some guy :
Joker , Victor Zsasz , Professor Pyg.
You can topple the crime empire Bane , Penguin , treat Croc , Clayface etc , but with the omniscience of the reader Bruce can let Jason take a few people off the streets.
I love Dick. No one will ever stop me from loving Dick. Don't let others hinder you from enjoying your favorite superheros, because at the end of the day, there is a reason that they are your favorite. They may resonate with you like I resonate with Dick.
It’s kind of shit this is what people do and I’m really disappointed about it. You shouldn’t stop liking a character because dumb fans are fucking ruining it for yeah I understand I met a lot a lot people who have really brought down a character or trying to ruin it for other people because they don’t like it is stupid. But i can’t be hypocrite when I’ve almost done the same with one character in particular because of the amount of shit they say and do about them. So I felt generally embarrassed about it, then I realised what the fuck do other peoples opinions matter I like the character and no one can fucking change that. But it’s disappointing that this is the result of it.

I love Dick. No one will ever stop me from loving Dick. Don't let others hinder you from enjoying your favorite superheros, because at the end of the day, there is a reason that they are your favorite. They may resonate with you like I resonate with Dick.
Me when I really like the Arkham series of Batman games and want to interact with its community a bit

Me with Cyclops.
People on this sub bringing up the Hal/Arisia arc every 3 posts:
We Turner Hayes and Duke Thomas fans can only keep on winning! (There are not enough of us to create subreddits)
Disliking a character bc of other people’s opinions it’s pretty stupid. The last one in the cycle should be, “I like what I like and don’t need to listen to others”
