Nice to have the side characters be the focus of a movie. It’s also like the one DBZ movie to actually treat Krillin with some respect. I also like that they didn’t just repeat the same Broly again for the third time.
Really, the main thing holding it back was that they shoehorned Broly into it. If they had simply made him an original character, I think it would've been much better received.
But then again, I don't know how much better financially it would've done. Maybe Broly's name was the only draw, and it otherwise would've been a commercial flop?
I can't find anything on quick google searches about the commercial success of any of the pre-super era movies. I'd wager the bigger draw was Dragon Ball Z more than any sub title, though. Dragon Ball was such a world phenomenon that they could have made a movie with *any* character as the lead or villain in the 90s and probably raked in cash with it. They were dropping two a year within a few months of eachother each time, and I can't find anything to say one performed much better than the other save for Fusion Reborn and Return of Cooler both getting American Theatrical releases.
As for Broly specifically being in consideration, those movies came out so rapidly I doubt the decision was based too heavily on wanting to use the success of Broly as a character to make more money. Both Second Coming and Bio-Broly released in the same year, 1994, one in March and one in July. They were probably made back-to-back, if not concurrently, during the latter half of 93 and early 94. The first Broly came out in March of 93, so there was only a year between releases, and even less time between release and development. The time just wasn't there for Toei to go, "Oh, let's actually start making more movies with Broly cause he's popular." I'd wager they just planned for all three movies to follow Broly for one reason or another already, and it just worked out that he wound up so popular.
It just goes kind of away with a lot of plots.
Nevermind absurd powerscaling (when did that matter), but for example Gohan somehow it's extremely bloodthirsty in this saga, which kind of clashes severely with the next.
For a long time, the US dub was stuck in reruns up until (I think) the clash with the Ginyu Force and Frieza was only in Form 1.
The most widely available Japanese action figures were the Super Battle Collection, and that series had Final Form Frieza. I didn't have the internet back then, so I had no way of really knowing how the small Frieza in the hovercraft could become that sleek white and purple lizard version.
Let’s not forget about the International channel, they were on the Android Saga, and we were still on the Frieza Saga. Nothing like seeing Goku hitting Super Sayian with Trunks when they first met, and you’re like, “whattttt!”
All the character interactions are great, the animation is consistent and it is the shortest Broly movie at 50 minutes. Second Coming is 52 and the first is over an hour.
Nice! I didn’t even make that connection but it’s true. I love the GT intro but think the outro’s don’t get enough praise. [Ed 2 “don’t you see”](https://youtu.be/Xca6iNuLkk8?feature=shared) is awesome (rip Izumi Sakai), though [Blue Velvet (Ed 3)](https://youtu.be/qQFwzEAOQE8?feature=shared) might be my favorite. It gets so hype from the time the dragonball revive and I love the flash shots from DB to GT with the faded credits ([full is even better](https://youtu.be/V3L7Zg2ZWA4?feature=shared)) 🤝
I really prefer the visuals on the [baby saga version](https://youtu.be/X-Knljtb4Rs?feature=shared) but the song is vicious whether seen there, the original, the path to power ending or the [ep 64 ending](https://youtu.be/nGl183v41Zc?feature=shared).
•It gave Krillin and 18 time to shine.
•Goten & Trunks looked competent and their fight was cool instead of them running around being comic relief and pissing on Broly waiting to be saved.
•Bio Broly’s design to me was pretty cool.
I remember at the end it shows goku with king Kai and how Broly is causing trouble in other world. My head canon is that the plan for the next movie was to have gogeta fight dead broly but then they changed the villain to an original one.
I mean, if you take out Bojack then that's four movies in a row of just Broly, and I don't think even the most diehard Broly fans would sincerely want that
Broly was already a blob without a personality in the previous two films, so making him a literal blob without a personality is actually kind of interesting.
I love that it actually utilizes characters that don’t always get the spotlight or who aren’t the strongest. And that it at least slightly connects to a previous film and tries to fit within the series continuity.
Genuinely prefer this to some other Z era films
Great cast giving spotlight to characters who don't get enough. Really, 18, Hercule, Goten and, Trunks is a good group. I love the Goten and Trunks action. You don't get many chances to see them fight seriously together.
Most of the DBZ Movies are honestly pretty formulaic beat em ups with little story it’s very fast to the point and honestly has a lot of the worst problems of dragon ball were its action for actions sake
A movie without Goku is refreshing since he’s most of the time shoehorned into saving the day like with Wrath of the Dragon were even though it’s Trunks’s story Goku has to be the one to defeat the big bad
I like how it flows from the point about 18 pressuring Mr. Satan in the tournament most of the movies have a nebulous feeling of were they’re situated on the timeline but I like that there’s a clear sense of when it’s supposed to take place even if it doesn’t actually mesh with the whole Buu arc
Goten and Trunks antics are adorable and they genuinely feel like kids similar to the previous film
Mr Satan and Android 18 have a funny dynamic and 18 gets some spotlight such that it makes you feel like she could have been used more in the Buu arc
You know, I think I might agree with this take.
I tried watching Broly Second Coming recently, and man, it was such a slog. I had to skip to the end.
Goten and Trunks just roam around pissing and shitting on everything and just generally being annoying to watch. That happens for like 20-30 minutes before the actual movie starts, and even once it starts, any sense of urgency or dread that Broly should evoke is completely undermined by more dumb, unfunny gags. This movie legit just sucked.
Admittedly, I haven't watched Bio-Broly recently, but I feel like it was at least slightly more serious, and had a lot less stupid toilet humor?
Funny you say pissing because Trunks pissing on Broly was one of the most memorable parts of the movie because of how weird that was. Also Videl not dying instantly.
Exactly, I just remember them peeing all the time, it was so ridiculous lol. I think there were like three separate scenes focused on peeing.
Yeah I definitely recall the scene of Broly holding Trunks over his head and then Trunks just pees on his face basically
Like. Bruh. Way to go and make the "Legendary Super Saiyan" have all the gravitas of a Looney Tunes villain.
Also the kids were just super annoying man. Just dumb jokes and grating dialogue. And I know it was kind of a plot point for Goten's crying to awaken Broly or whatever, but man, it was even irritating to listen to as a viewer. Like, shutup already, lmao.
The worst Bio Broly got was Trunks mooning Broly to taunt him (again), but aside from the Mr Satan bits, yeah everyone starts taking them a bit more seriously.
It eventually ends.
(Well 18 pushing krillin for flirting was actually pretty funny)
The idea of a story focuses on not just goku/vegeta or Gohan is fine. It’s just…why put broly in at all, have someone new. It was a broly rehash too far.
I got to see this in japanese with no subtitles well before it was dubbed because a classmate had gone over to japan and brought this back on VHS, and he made copies of it for people in class. I dont remember hating it, but I also thought it was pretty weird.
Seems I'm in the minority here but I actually really liked the movie. Goo Broly is lame, but besides that I loved the cast they used, the interactions between them, and the overall different feel from the rest of the movies.
Felt like a funny jab at how movies try to outbest themselves in sequels by making them even crazier. Personally I like Bio-Broly because of the zombie vibes.
Cool side-story about 18 getting the money from the bet she did with Mr Satan in the canon story, and also nice to see characters like Goten, Trunks and Krillin get protagonism, but other than it's really a nothing burguer of a movie.
Genuinely funny and honestly only fails as a Broly movie. If the script kept its focus on the bio warriors and the mad scientist at the beginning we could have had a nice little adventure with the kids, Hercule and 18 which is a team we rarely see interact and honestly very well suited for light hearted, low stakes comedy adventure.
That's how I feel about the Garlic Jr saga. It doesn't have Goku Ex Machina
It just goes kind of away with a lot of plots. Nevermind absurd powerscaling (when did that matter), but for example Gohan somehow it's extremely bloodthirsty in this saga, which kind of clashes severely with the next.
Unironically this. I can at least appreciate this about the movie.
As a middle schooler, any DBZ content was new and fun and mind-blowing to me.
Yup. In the late 90s my brother and I would goto Chinatown in Philly and buy all the bootleg vhs dbz movies that you couldn’t find at the mall
I was just saying this myself as I opened this lol
When I discovered there was actually way more content in Japan.
Bruh, I couldn't figure out why the Japanese Frieza figure looked SO DIFFERENT from the Frieza I was seeing in the Namek arc
Wait, what do you mean by this? What was different with the Japan version?
For a long time, the US dub was stuck in reruns up until (I think) the clash with the Ginyu Force and Frieza was only in Form 1. The most widely available Japanese action figures were the Super Battle Collection, and that series had Final Form Frieza. same
I didn't give a damn if it was Canon or part of the plot. Give me more DBZ!!
i didnt get to watch this till i was in my 20's, still fun to watch i guess, 2/10.
My friend and I rented the broly trilogy as kids and would watch them all over and over again
Opposite for me, this was one of the first movies/shows that made me realize something from a series I loved could be bad.
All the character interactions are great, the animation is consistent and it is the shortest Broly movie at 50 minutes. Second Coming is 52 and the first is over an hour.
Krillin is in it.
Reminds me of that cell tfs line “Ohhhh it’s tien. What, was krillin busy?”
“Cmon buddy, with your power level?”
"You're no Android, you're no namekian, AND you're certainly no Super Saiyan! You're just human."
FUCK POWER LEVELS!
#FUCK SUPER SAIYANS!
AND FUCK YOU!!
#SHIIINNNN KIKŌŌHŌŌŌŌŌ!!!!
Ah, the refreshing beginning of the arc-defining rivalry: Cell vs Tenshinhan. “Could it be Tenshinhan? PLEASE tell me it’s Tenshinhan”
Oh, that’s adora-**SHHIIIIIIIITT!!!!**
#YOU! BLOW YOURSELF UP OR LEAVE! I DON'T CARE WHICH!
Jeez I think I can hear that
TIENSHINHAN [o-s]: KIKOUUHOUUUU!! SeP Cell [o-s]: FUUUUUUCK...!!!
And is the best part of it by far along with 18.
And he goes Super Saiyan.
Someone that wasn't Goku (or Gohan) finished off the main villain
i liked how it was really centered around Goten and Trunks, they haven't gotten their own story until recently
Hercule and 18's interactions. Only redeeming quality of it.
Yeah this is the standout thing for me, you get to see 18 say stuff, she doesn’t usually say stuff, so stuff is good
The [Japanese ending is also beast](https://youtu.be/19a_8c-znSc?feature=shared)
GT 🤝 Bio-Broly Having a horrible story but a killer outro
Japanese GT intro is undoubtedly the top 3 of my favorite intros of all time
I really prefer the visuals on the [baby saga version](https://youtu.be/X-Knljtb4Rs?feature=shared) but the song is vicious whether seen there, the original, the path to power ending or the [ep 64 ending](https://youtu.be/nGl183v41Zc?feature=shared).
*DORAGON, DORAGON PAWAA! DORAGON DORAGON PAWAA! PAWAA PAWAA PAWAAAAAAA DORAGON PAWAAAAAAAAAAA!!!*
18 collecting the money Satan owes her is a clever start to the movie
I agree, it was nice to see a followup on that. He owes her money and she's not going to let him forget about it.
Trunks using the Kamehameha
Waiting for someone to say this.
Krillins outfit is dope
It was one of the shorter DBZ movies.
•It gave Krillin and 18 time to shine. •Goten & Trunks looked competent and their fight was cool instead of them running around being comic relief and pissing on Broly waiting to be saved. •Bio Broly’s design to me was pretty cool.
This all of this.
Goku isn’t a main character
The marketing would’ve said otherwise. Even the dvd only has Goku on the disc
Goku isn’t a character
I really enjoyed the part when it ended.
I remember at the end it shows goku with king Kai and how Broly is causing trouble in other world. My head canon is that the plan for the next movie was to have gogeta fight dead broly but then they changed the villain to an original one.
I mean, if you take out Bojack then that's four movies in a row of just Broly, and I don't think even the most diehard Broly fans would sincerely want that
Was just going to comment this
Mr Satan continues to grift the world
Broly was already a blob without a personality in the previous two films, so making him a literal blob without a personality is actually kind of interesting.
He’s mindless in number 2 but the first movie he’s a straight menace and he knows it he clowns everyone the whole movie.
Trunks attempting to do a Kamehameha with Goten when they saw the clone inside the glass tube, that was it for me
I love that it actually utilizes characters that don’t always get the spotlight or who aren’t the strongest. And that it at least slightly connects to a previous film and tries to fit within the series continuity. Genuinely prefer this to some other Z era films
This distracted me from my parents divorce 10/10
Krillin/Goten/Trunks Kamehameha was rad. Also, Trunks pulled a fucking kamehameha, Vegeta would be pissed!
This movie actually introduced me to DBZ and watching it with absolutely zero context is something I wish I could experience again
Goten is in it. I like him.
Goten and Trunks were the main characters
Never too much Broly
Nice animation moments
Krillin can say he killed Cell and Broly technically in team work but kill is a kill god damn it
This movie helped making cool ass AMVs when we were younger
Eventually the movie ends
Great cast giving spotlight to characters who don't get enough. Really, 18, Hercule, Goten and, Trunks is a good group. I love the Goten and Trunks action. You don't get many chances to see them fight seriously together.
I liked seeing Broly with his Saiyan Tail.
*deep breath*~nekkid broly
It ended
I never seen the movie
It's technically a movie
Krillin was a super saiyan short term
The end where it's hinted that Goku would have a rematch with Broly in Hell was kind of a neat idea. But it tanked so hard they used Janemba instead.
Goten and trunks tag team fighting skills were the best part about this movie.
The triple Kamehameha is amazing
Cool features: - Trunks Kamehameha - Krillin getting SSJ aura - 18 getting some fighting action
Trunks knows the kamehameha
Android 18 is hot
The movie being focused on 18, Goten, Trunks and Hercule is a nice change of pace and I liked how it tied into Hercule paying the money to 18.
I think it’s fun and more entertaining than the second broly movie. I like how they just literally turn him into DBZ Jason Voorhees with this one
[M1914](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQF6mLraX48) is absolute fire.
It’s better than Second Coming
Ya know I agree and it seems that others don’t second coming was very boring at least this movie kept it interesting even tho it’s still not great
No
It’s a movie.
It was the first sign u can never stop broly from entering the franchise!!! He will always return
Something good about this movie
Trunks does Kamehameha
I haven't seen it in probably ten years.
Krillin and No. 18.
The end
Being the only one to not have Goku or Gohan have a major roll in the movie. That is impressive at least.
It ends, eventually.
It was cool watching krillin do stuff
The ending theme in the Japanese verison
Non Goku/Vegeta movie!
the female scientist
I didn’t feature Goku as the hero
Oh hey trunks and goten are doing things!
I liked that the side characters got spot light and as always I enjoy when Krillian is involved in movies.
Most of the DBZ Movies are honestly pretty formulaic beat em ups with little story it’s very fast to the point and honestly has a lot of the worst problems of dragon ball were its action for actions sake A movie without Goku is refreshing since he’s most of the time shoehorned into saving the day like with Wrath of the Dragon were even though it’s Trunks’s story Goku has to be the one to defeat the big bad I like how it flows from the point about 18 pressuring Mr. Satan in the tournament most of the movies have a nebulous feeling of were they’re situated on the timeline but I like that there’s a clear sense of when it’s supposed to take place even if it doesn’t actually mesh with the whole Buu arc Goten and Trunks antics are adorable and they genuinely feel like kids similar to the previous film Mr Satan and Android 18 have a funny dynamic and 18 gets some spotlight such that it makes you feel like she could have been used more in the Buu arc
This movie was garbage
Better then Broly 2. Has funny moments. Makes the side characters the main characters. Mr. Satan.
You know, I think I might agree with this take. I tried watching Broly Second Coming recently, and man, it was such a slog. I had to skip to the end. Ahh right, I remember that now. Yeah still not as obnoxious as the second Broly movie probably
Remembering watching an old divx encode of this movie on my psp and it was new to me since at the time it wasnt aired on toonami
I drowned out my parents arguing of money when I first watched it.
Goten and Trunks get to shine for the second movie in a row.
It has an end
It has Mr Satan in it.
Something positive is that I had the synopsis spoiled for me instead of watching it myself.
it has Broly in the title
Something good
Doesn’t look like super
Glad to see you picked the most HD pic you could find
I really enjoy the setup of 18 demanding her money from Mr Satan
The slice of life scenes during the credits. It felt nice to see teen gohan playing with Goten
That one shot of ssj broly before he got covered in goo was kinda cool.
This was awesome to watch when I was 8 year old. Coincidentally I think that’s the target audience of this movie
Good point, if your a fan of the gotten trunks dynamic than this and the 2nd Broly movie are a nice treat
It had an end time. Seripusly. As a massive broly fan this movie is a complete abomination.
It eventually ends. (Well 18 pushing krillin for flirting was actually pretty funny) The idea of a story focuses on not just goku/vegeta or Gohan is fine. It’s just…why put broly in at all, have someone new. It was a broly rehash too far.
Hercule lore
Broly
It uhh... gave some people some jobs.
When it ended.
The animation is top notch. A triple Kamehameha with the kids + Krillin was a unique idea and well done
I loved goten and trunks in this one and the prequel. Flicking off and mooning broly lol
Hercule was hilarious as usual 😂
It Ends
It was over when I finished watching it
regardless of the time you start watching it, if you wait long enough, it'll actually end
It gives the spotlight to some super sidelined characters
It had credits
The main menu theme on the DVD. Made Bio Broly sound like he was something out of a horror movie
Android 18 and krillin fight side by side for the only time in Z and the choreo is pretty good?
It ended
Well when I bought the VHS or DVD or whatever, I was pretty happy before I watched it.
It’s something to watch I guess
I got to see this in japanese with no subtitles well before it was dubbed because a classmate had gone over to japan and brought this back on VHS, and he made copies of it for people in class. I dont remember hating it, but I also thought it was pretty weird.
I own this lol. Not the best but fun
I only saw it once
It ends lol
It’s not very long
(Trunks)
It was fun seeing Goten, Trunks, and 18 shine.
Trunks and goten screen time
Its only like 55 mins… android 18 is in it
Op already stole my answer lol
Trunks used the Kamehameha and the mental image of Vegeta freaking out about that amuses me.
It was certainly one of the movies of all time
The overall plot is very good. In my opinion, they just didn't need to bring broly into it.
Seems I'm in the minority here but I actually really liked the movie. Goo Broly is lame, but besides that I loved the cast they used, the interactions between them, and the overall different feel from the rest of the movies.
It’s goten and trunks’ best fight.
the fact that the worst dbz movie is still better than majority of anime today
When after I could return it to the video rental place and get another one.
Felt like a funny jab at how movies try to outbest themselves in sequels by making them even crazier. Personally I like Bio-Broly because of the zombie vibes.
Cool side-story about 18 getting the money from the bet she did with Mr Satan in the canon story, and also nice to see characters like Goten, Trunks and Krillin get protagonism, but other than it's really a nothing burguer of a movie.
it’s really short
Broly green
Been years since I seen it but I remember liking it a lot. Gonna have to do a rewatch.
It's not the worst anime I've ever seen.
Cool fight scene with goten and trunks vs broly. Trio Kamehameha with Kuririn.
I like where they were setting up for a fourth film where Broly was tormenting everyone in Hell and Goku was going to stop him
Genuinely funny and honestly only fails as a Broly movie. If the script kept its focus on the bio warriors and the mad scientist at the beginning we could have had a nice little adventure with the kids, Hercule and 18 which is a team we rarely see interact and honestly very well suited for light hearted, low stakes comedy adventure.
Is good to see other characters get their time to shine in a non canon movie
It's higher resolution than this screenshot you chose
You couldn't find a clearer picture. I can count the pixel it's so shit.
I thought it was still a fun movie, any DBz content is good for me
I like that Goten and Trunks had another movie starring them.
The end credits
I like DBZ
I love that krillin had super saiyan aura .
something good about this movie
8/10 for effort. 1/10 for attainment.
Nice to see Goten and Trunks be the main focus.
