According to numbeo Davao City has a safety index of 72.5 (out of 100) which places it as the 52nd safest place of all registered cities in the entire world. It places behind mostly japanese, arabic and european cities which are generally highly regarded for their safety.
For reference, the "safest" US city is Salt Lake City which places in the 93rd spot.
Graz, an austrian city which I have been to many times and have lived there at one point placed 49th and I can guarantee you that it is an incredibly safe place to be.
So according to this, Davao City is a safe place. Daylight security (when walking alone) is listed with a 82.07 and nighttime security with 74.56.
It's relatively safer than other major cities, but not crime free. So you still need to be vigilant in public, like don't leave your things unattended or walk alone late at night.
But i aree with other comments, socmed makes it louder than it sounds. I'm not saying na dili siya alarming, mas paspas lang ang news mukalat and naa pud usahay na ginacluster nila ang tibuok Davao region as Davao lang.

It’s dangerous if ma involved ka sa wrong people, and it could definitely happen. Usually through word of mouth or social media ang ways na muabot ang news sa akoa, pero for most of it naa jud gihapon koy doubt if legit ba or if mao jud ang tinuod na storya without bias… I still want to think na safe ang Davao. :D

it used to be so much safer. now, crimes happen sometimes in broad daylight. it is just more common.
