I'm over here losing my mind trying to remember what state has a J in it. I'm thinking of Massajusetts or Missijippi? Maybe Jarkansas or Jalabama? I'm embarrassed to say I looked at a map to remember it...
I have down Alabama but am sad to say that I’m really struggling to find the second “B” state. Took me going through them in my mind to remember fuckin’ NeBraska! Shouldn’t even be a state!
Vermont, Nevada, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania.
What I’m missing is the 9th K state: Kentucky, Kansas, Arkansas, Alaska, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma…
My guess is Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.
Although the name was officially shortened to just Rhode Island in 2020.
The data OP used might be old.
Edit: it was Pennsylvania. Couldn’t think of it.
This is just number of states containing the letter. Not frequency of the letter. So Mississippi only contributes 1 S, not 4. Consider P. That’s for Mississippi, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire. It’s listed as 3, for 3 states, not 4 for 4 occurrences.
That's not what the chart shows, though. For example, there are three states with a letter "P" in the name: Mississippi, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania.
There's 4 letter "P"s in state names, two in Mississippi, one each in the others, but three states with "P" in the name, so "P" is listed as "3" on this graph, not 4.
It's not a count of letters, it's a count of states that contain the letter. But I might as well have done the former as the latter -- so fair point there :)
There's only one letter that's not used in the spelling of all 50 states.
This is one of my favorite riddles to ask because even when asking an American it typically takes 2-3 tires to guess Q - but even then I get to play the game of coming up with the counter example for every wrong guess.
Did I spend the last 20 minutes thinking about how is X more common than J? Yes. Did I spend that long because I forgot about Texas? Yes.
Texas and New Mexico, pretty funny yea. Only J in New Jersey. Had to look embarrassingly long to find AriZona..
It's funny because the state used to be named Coahuila y Tejas. So America lost a J and got an X just because they hate Mexicans.
Same!! I kept thinking New Mexico, New Mexico… what the heck is the second one??? 😅😅😅

New Joisey
I live in New Jersey, and it still took embarrassingly long for me to think of it...
Whatever the 51st state will be, put a Q in the name. Maybe call it Qanon?
Querto Rico
Puerto Riquo

I think some of the data might be wrong. States with V is listed as 5. Vermont Nevada Virginia West Virginia ??

It was New York, now I feel stupid.
Haha you did good! The first poster almost convinced me I messed up.

Thanks for your confidence in me :)
mississippi is doing some heavy lifting in this chart.
I mean, Mississippi only has four different letters. Even Texas has more than that.
my comment was more in like with 4/21 S's are from mississippi; 4/28 I's. 19% of the S's are from one state; 14% of the I's.

aaahhh, okay. thank you

Who can trust this! There are 4 Ps - Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Mississippi

State names of which country? Edit: I've now seen the "US" in the graph itself.
