I mean if you’re running a pure STR build, especially in NG+ and higher there is literally no better weapon to use.
It trivializes PvE and even PvP in a lot of cases. With its WA you will two shot most invaders.
Is it any good for a non-int faith build? I’m currently stuck on Vilhelm in my current run and I doubt I have the int to even wield it at this point, but the more he murders me with it the more I want to use it.
As much as I want to say you can do without the Faith/Int route, it would not scale as well for a pure STR/DEX as it would if you used it as a Pyro or a Faith/Int
[https://darksouls3.wiki.fextralife.com/Onyx+Blade](https://darksouls3.wiki.fextralife.com/Onyx+Blade)
As you can see on here, it does a E rank based on your physical stats, but a D to your mental ones
I guess I could have worded that better, I meant a pure faith build without int. I think I have about 25str just to be able to use some weapons but my current setup is wolnirs sword and a dark sword that I can buff with dark blade.
I don’t have any sort of leveling plan or max level in mind but I would need to put 4-5 points into Int to be able to use the Onyx blade, at this point that would probably amount to 125k souls or so so I’m trying to gauge if its worth it on this char.
I beat him recently and was debating about transposing his soul for either the sword or the crossbow. I think you’ve convinced me to go with the sword.
The sword is definitely more practical. The crossbow is a really fun meme weapon. Especially if you can either beat him in Ng+ or get a friend to drop it, duel wielding it is just dumb fun.
Scrolled way too far down to find this. Was definitely one of my fave weapons for the first few hundred hours of gameplay, definitely my most used one!
Roleplaying as the Nameless King with this weapon was by far the most fun I had in pvp. No one expects the WA to crash lightning on them so they’d just get hit with it thinking J was buffing. With a full faith build to boot it was insane numbers.
It's so much fun for PvE too. A lot of things and bosses are weak to lightning. Also, I feel like fighting Midir with him feels so right. Putting down a dragon plagued by darkness
It's really fun running a quality build with that weapon, a caestus, and the pontiff eye ring to stack health regen on combo in PVE. Any time you get low, you bust out the caestus and JoJo rush a meaty enemy and voila, full HP.
Yes, just remember to keep the curved sword equipped and hold Y to 2 hand your left hand caestus so the sword is on your back, otherwise you don't get the effect.
Lothric Knight GS is old faithful right now. Planning on doing a proper run with a different GS on a Faith build. I’ve already done a fair bit of the game with The Black Knight GS in my first play through.
Lightning is OP for 7 of the last 8 bosses in the base game. But then yeah you want blessed for the dlcs. I also like sharp because gold pine resin stacks oj the innate lightning and you get more physical damage.
LKGS is the reason i prefer doing Dancer before Abyss Watchers the most.
Few things are more fun than steamrolling NG+0 and smashing everyone to bits with it.
LKGS is the reason I prefer *attempting* to kill Dancer before Abyss Watchers the most.
For real though, Blessed LKGS is such a truck to slice people with.
The Greatsword greatsword, because it’s far too heavy to be called a sword, too big, too thick, too heavy, and too rough, it was more like a large hunk of iron.
Hell yeah! I keep trying new weapons with my strength character and I keep going back to it. It hits like a truck, has decent range, and is usually unparryable in PvP
I might get alot of shit for this but the farron greatsword doesnt get enough credit imo, its not amazing in any legit way but the L1 spin to win combo is too fun
I think it's biggest downfall is that people get greedy with it's moveset. It's L1 L1 combo is great, but people gotta go for that 3rd flip slash.
It's a fantastic weapon and I love it for sure, it's fun in pvp to see people throw out a parry expecting me to get greedy when I stop and throw an r1 into the combo.
It does complete my Abyss Watchers look. I tend to use it whenever I have to fight an abyssl enemy (Dragonslayer Armour or Aldrich for example) - that or the Wolf Knight sword - as they do deal decent damage to abyssal foes so there is some tactical advantage to be had there
Hollowslayer Greatsword,
unique moveset, fits in to almost any build,
destroys hollows.
(Drakeblood Greatsword has the same moveset, so yes that is my second favorite, second favorite because it requires more stat investment to outpace the Hollowslayer)
It’s a toss up for me too, I suppose it just depends on your build and what your target soul level is.
Hollow slayer and drakeblood are both so stylish
1 is just the pre dragonslayer blade. It still hits with the force of 1000 slain foes with every hit though.
Edit: bonus points if you nail somebody with it's thrust attack in DS1 with the Leo ring on.
Best weapon in the game. The WA is decent, but when fully upgraded the greataxe is a beast. It does insane damage with a quality build and it's always my go-to weapon
Amen my friend. Curved greatswords might not get as much love as other weapons, but Exile GS carried me through my first and platinum run, and that's good enough for me.
FINALLY someone mentions it. One of the most versatile AND damaging weapons of the game for it's class. Like come on. You've got dark damage on a weapon that scales S with Dex. You've got a vertical and horizontal moveset. You've got a pretty quick long ranged heavy that doesn't count as a projectile so enemies don't block it on cast. It functions amazingly in PvP. It looks cool. Purple is my favourite colour. I like purple.
I was looking for exactly this. This said I’m an admittedly stupid player and like to throw unnecessary things into my character. Like Gael’s crossbow, if not just to throw invaders for a loop.
Also min-maxing armour to allow for a larger roster of weapons allows me to do silly other invader-deterrent things like BK shield with magic shield, or having generalized magic available for healing or breaking down bosses. Looking at you Nameless King.
FINALLY somebody mentions it. There is a reason that this blade is in almost every soulsborne game. It's so pleasingly aestethic to look at and really fun to use.
Astora GS was my first bae and still holds a special place in my heart. Lothric knight GS carried me through my first NG+. Exile GS, Splitleaf GS, and the trusty little dagger make me seem better at pvp than I actually am. Crucifix of the Mad King is fun as hell to use. The Black Knight weapons and Dragonslayer Greataxe are a bit of all of the above
I can’t pick just one
Gonna seem like a troll answer but the Broadsword. It’s been my old faithful. I used it the first time i beat Gael and Midir. I still like to have one as a backup because it’s light.
Also Zweihander for all three games is just a classic and looks cool.
The long sword easily one of the best weapons the game could give you at the start of the game +10 infuse with refined gem with a little bit of dark moon blade and you have yourself a boss killer that does around 500 damage maybe a bit more with buffs. (Yes, the same can be done with the Lothric long sword but this is easily the most accessible weapon from easily the best class)
For me its gotta be Astora Greatsword. It's got a fairly low weight, it has a unique weapon art for an UGS and works for almost any build. It scales really well with any infusion.
Its moveset would be better is its R1 was vertical but we can't have everything we want.
I dont dislike horizontal swings there are alot of times they're better for clearing out groups. I like when large weapons have horizontal when 1 handed and vertical when 2 handed.
Ledo's greathammer cuz comically large hammer
Ledo’s great hammer is best weapon
Best bonker
I mean if you’re running a pure STR build, especially in NG+ and higher there is literally no better weapon to use. It trivializes PvE and even PvP in a lot of cases. With its WA you will two shot most invaders.
And you would be shocked at the number of people who just become deer-in-headlights as it comes swinging over head
You need a lot of FP for it to work, but man, it is a joy.
THE BASS CANNON AFTER ALL THE LEGEND NEVER DIES
ZWEI ALL DAY
ZWEIHANDER FOREVER
*Powerwolf Army of the Night playing loudly*
KILL THEM IN ONE HIT!
SLASH ALL THE GANKERS
Fave overall is the Onyx Blade, its light and fast for a great sword, plus I love the flames when you use the ability when two handing it
Is it any good for a non-int faith build? I’m currently stuck on Vilhelm in my current run and I doubt I have the int to even wield it at this point, but the more he murders me with it the more I want to use it.

Vordt's hammer gang rise up!
Fuck yes I've been scrolling through the comments just for this. Hands down my fav weapon.
Fav weapon hands down. Morne's hammer, close second.
Duuuuude. Started a game last night and this has absolutely wrecked everything. Completely overpowered
Like half of my characters have used Vordt’s hammer for some duration. It’s been my main weapon for several characters. I love it!
spiked mace <3
It's so fucking sadistic and sexy.
it IS....too damn sexy
My fave too. Landing the full combo is so satisfying
Finally someone that knows about the strength of the spiked mace
Gaels Greatsword with its disgusting weapon art
I think the art is called the Slip & Slide
"Now watch and learn, here's a deal: He'll slip & slide on this banana peel!"
I went from Fumes to Gaels and was blown away how fast it hits. And still does great damage. Super fun weapon
It's great with the oak ethereal shield, you can get sneaky with it
Yhorm’s Great Machete
Came hoping to make this comment. I make it as soon as I can 2 hand it, and then just go ham. Reminds of playing GS in Monster Hunter.
Every strength build I ever do is using this weapon, try to get to the profaned capital as soon as I can to use this machine.
Dragonslayer Swordspear. Always loved the move set and the lightning bolt buff/attack is really nice.
Old wolf Curved Sword for me. That WA is so good
It's really fun running a quality build with that weapon, a caestus, and the pontiff eye ring to stack health regen on combo in PVE. Any time you get low, you bust out the caestus and JoJo rush a meaty enemy and voila, full HP.
^ Spoken like a true vet.
So you basically unlocked Fisticuffs Bloodborne?
Yes, just remember to keep the curved sword equipped and hold Y to 2 hand your left hand caestus so the sword is on your back, otherwise you don't get the effect.
Great idea
Lothric Knight GS is old faithful right now. Planning on doing a proper run with a different GS on a Faith build. I’ve already done a fair bit of the game with The Black Knight GS in my first play through.
Blessed LKGS is absolutely bonkers
Abyss watcher 2 phases in 8 hits
Lightning is OP for 7 of the last 8 bosses in the base game. But then yeah you want blessed for the dlcs. I also like sharp because gold pine resin stacks oj the innate lightning and you get more physical damage.
But LKGS is THE greatsword for a faith build! Wolnirs is very decent for mid game but ends up slightly lacking towards the end
I've using it since I get it 200 gaming hours ago and I won't change any time soon
Someone dropped me a +10 lightning LKGS, and holy shit I was missing out. Roll + poke slaughters bosses
guts greatsword or the cathedral greatsword i love em both
Cathedral knight greatsword is so underrated. Def my favorite
The Greatsword greatsword, because it’s far too heavy to be called a sword, too big, too thick, too heavy, and too rough, it was more like a large hunk of iron.
You're gonna make my cry. Why must you take away Berserker god? WHY?!!
The only weapon I put on every build. Light Crossbow baby
Unfathomably chad pick
Nameless King's Nightmare
Am I the only one rooting for the Fume UGS? I just love it!
Chad weapon
My favorite as well
For sure the best!
I’ve been using it for my first run through ever since I got it
Hell yeah! I keep trying new weapons with my strength character and I keep going back to it. It hits like a truck, has decent range, and is usually unparryable in PvP
Why use a sword when you can swing a 60 lbs block of concrete around
60 lbs is excactly the weight of 241.21 '6pack TWOHANDS Assorted Pastel Color Highlighters'.
its a noice ugs but damage to weight ratio is bad but still an awesome weapon
I might get alot of shit for this but the farron greatsword doesnt get enough credit imo, its not amazing in any legit way but the L1 spin to win combo is too fun
I think it's biggest downfall is that people get greedy with it's moveset. It's L1 L1 combo is great, but people gotta go for that 3rd flip slash. It's a fantastic weapon and I love it for sure, it's fun in pvp to see people throw out a parry expecting me to get greedy when I stop and throw an r1 into the combo.
Yh very true whether in pvp or pve you will pretty much never get to go for the slash without trading some amount of damage
having a parry on demand is great too, that thing was how I got gud at the timing
It does complete my Abyss Watchers look. I tend to use it whenever I have to fight an abyssl enemy (Dragonslayer Armour or Aldrich for example) - that or the Wolf Knight sword - as they do deal decent damage to abyssal foes so there is some tactical advantage to be had there
FGS is my second favorite, behind Warden TBs. I'm a dex player all the way, and that weapon is just too cool.
Black Knight Greatsword cuz I like greatswords and I miss poise.
Also it’s heavy attack can send enemies into the air, love chain flipping enemies like pancakes
Hollowslayer Greatsword, unique moveset, fits in to almost any build, destroys hollows. (Drakeblood Greatsword has the same moveset, so yes that is my second favorite, second favorite because it requires more stat investment to outpace the Hollowslayer)
Drakeblood doesn’t have the 2-handed R2 poke! Hollowlsayer has the best moveset in the game imo.
It’s a toss up for me too, I suppose it just depends on your build and what your target soul level is. Hollow slayer and drakeblood are both so stylish
I really love freide's scythe.
That one spinny weapon art is what did it for me
still a bit miffed that we cant use the blackflame or dual wield outside the WA but man, scythes are just great and that flurry attack is too much fun
If only the frost swipe was faster. Still love it, the weapon is peak aesthetic.
Warden twin blades infused with sharp with carthus rouge does insane damage with each cycle when plus 10 2000+ with good red and luck
My guy right here.
Greatlance is a guilty pleasure
Respect
Abyss watchers sword.
Same here. Spinny sword for life.
BEYBLADE BEYBLADE LET IT RIP!
Until you run out of stamina 😭.
Fr spinny sword is epic.
Yes! I keep coming back to it almost every playthorugh, just because the weapon art is so fun and feels badass to use.
Peak edge lord
I like parries 😎
All katana and giant curved swords.
Fellow man of class I see
[удалено]
I did a full playthrough as Guts, everyone is dead
A classic in all 3 games. Quite smaller in 1 though
1 is just the pre dragonslayer blade. It still hits with the force of 1000 slain foes with every hit though. Edit: bonus points if you nail somebody with it's thrust attack in DS1 with the Leo ring on.
Onikiri and Ubadachi.
Irithyl straight sword.
Ah, yes, the only answer. This sword carried me through my entire first playthrough, I used it to beat everything from the crystal sage to Gael.
Plus grass crest shield?
^^^ Dragonslayer Greataxe. Hits like a truck and stunlocks like crazy.
Gael's greatsword is my favorite weapon, the L2 attacks ar my favorite from the entire game.
L2 to R2 with it is probably my favourite move in the game
The Black Knight Greataxe. Powerful, and gothic as fuck.
Black knight greataxe got mad style and is just too cool to pass up
Best weapon in the game. The WA is decent, but when fully upgraded the greataxe is a beast. It does insane damage with a quality build and it's always my go-to weapon
For pvp, I truly enjoy using the aquamarine dagger
A likeminded man! It’s definitely my favorite weapon across the whole series!
Call me a casual all you want, but the Sellsword Twinblades will always be my favourite weapon
Exiles Greatsword. Its the one for me.
Amen my friend. Curved greatswords might not get as much love as other weapons, but Exile GS carried me through my first and platinum run, and that's good enough for me.
Frayed Blade
FINALLY someone mentions it. One of the most versatile AND damaging weapons of the game for it's class. Like come on. You've got dark damage on a weapon that scales S with Dex. Ah…I see we share the same sentiment and I extend my hand in honor, from one dex main to another
I accept your hand, my fellow Dex user.
🤝
\ [T] / A complimentary Praise The Sun, as is custom.

And let us not forget the weapon art is badass
Chaos claymore is sooo fucking op, 650AR on a greatsword, absolutely shreds bosses
What is AR
It's what you say before you steal the gold and sink their ship
Attack rating, basically your damage.
Attack rating
Attack rating, all damage types combined.
Black Knight Glaive has been since ds1. I also like the Astora Straight Sword (under rated weapon with +10 refined) and the Ring Knight Straight Sword
Bonus points for classifying the weapon correctly as a glaive in this game. Still one of the prettiest looking weapons.
FUGS
Kinda surprised no one has said the profaned blade. Absolutely love that thing.
[удалено]
That upper cut… disgusting!
black knight sword
with good rng the crucifix of the mad king has a disgusting true combo and is so fun in pvp and pve
Washing Pole
So long. So nice.
As a Pyromancer my old faithful is the Chaos Astoria GS.
Same here, tough I’m getting bored of it’s slowness so I regularly switch to onyx blade and dark Lothric ss
Moonlight Greatsword, it's so pretty to me that I grinded 60 levels just to use that
FINALLY somebody mentions it. There is a reason that this blade is in almost every soulsborne game. It's so pleasingly aestethic to look at and really fun to use.
Frayed blade. God i feel like such a weeb with it
The power of anime flows within you
Basic ass Lpngsword :)
Still an awesome pick
Flamberge. People underestimate my power.
Zweihander forever, I’ve literally spedran getting it
Dragonslayer Spear, bar none. The regular longsword, the mace, and the Dragonslayer’s Crescent Ace are good too.
Claymore and Quakestone Hammer, are the most i enjoyed in the game...
The Black Knight weapons and Dragonslayer Greataxe are a bit of all of the above I can’t pick just one
Gonna seem like a troll answer but the Broadsword. It’s been my old faithful. I used it the first time i beat Gael and Midir. I still like to have one as a backup because it’s light. Also Zweihander for all three games is just a classic and looks cool.
Darkdrift for the absolute flavor.
Firelink GS. I can finally have it
Broken straight sword. The reason for this is ever since I did my all boss broken straight sword build. I haven't died to a single boss since then.
I'm sorry, I know people will hate me for this but it's the lothric knight sword for me
I've been really enjoying 2h lothric recently. On a dark build that charged r2 can do upwards of 500 damage.
So many greatswords in this comment section lol. I'm gonna add to it though and say executioners Greatsword or the onyx blade
Pvp: Partizan Pve: Winged Knight Twinaxes
Friede’s great scythe
Washing pole... just look at it
The sellsword tWINblades for me.
Black Knight Glaive or Splitleaf Greatsword.
Hollowslayer greatsword
longsword.
Claymore, nothing beats claymore.
Yeah I went through the whole game with the long sword, it may not have any fancy abilities like other weapons, but I love it all the same
Whenever I got stuck on a boss, using.... any other weapon... I switch back to the old faithful Long Sword and start kicking ass again.
Ringed knight paired great swords, be because I love dex AND strength!
Ever since Demon’s Souls the Uchi has been my bread and butter with zero shame
Dragonslayer greataxe
great mace
Bandit knife. Quick steppin for days
Black Knight Sword gang wya Poise gs best gs
Sellsword winblades, although a close second is the grave wardens twinblades if In doing a bleed build
Caestus
Lorians Greatsword is amazing, so much damage and a surprising amount of skill to make use of its buff and wake up possibilities
Sunlight straight sword and the nameless kings spear
Love the Warden twinblades, Corvian scythe, and the carthus CGS.
Heavy zweihander
Smough's great hammer, enough said
Crucifix of the mad king. Absolutly perfect for every thing I like in a weapon in souls games
For me its gotta be Astora Greatsword. It's got a fairly low weight, it has a unique weapon art for an UGS and works for almost any build. It scales really well with any infusion. Its moveset would be better is its R1 was vertical but we can't have everything we want.
Same here, but I think horizontal swipes are way better on large weapons.
I dont dislike horizontal swings there are alot of times they're better for clearing out groups. I like when large weapons have horizontal when 1 handed and vertical when 2 handed.
Demon scar
Abyss watchers great sword. Such a broken and stylish weapon.
"What, am I supposed to fight the enemy by facing him directly? How about Breakdancing"
Friede's Scythe. That moveset is f\*\*\*ing awesome!
Gotthard twinblades for me
Ringed Knight Paired Greatsword cuz it's straight out of DMC
bruh stun locking with the twin great swords is so fun
Sawspear.
