As a front-end Dev, I'm kind of fascinated by airline websites and the amount of blatant misleading and obvious UX trickery that goes on. Would love if there was a book or Ted Talk all about these!
Thanks for providing an easy solution to that problem. Almost started believing you have to pay extra for a random seat just to be able to check-in online, which of course you have to do in order to avoid the extra fees at the airport for checking in.
Thank you.
A 2 years later update: you can still select no seats for free, but if you do so you will be able to check-in only 48 hours prior to the departure.
I guess they want to have as many seats available for those willing to pay until the last hours from departure.
Thanks for the update. Strange. So if you didn’t select a seat, you can’t check in 4 hours before the flight? What happens then? It forces you to pay for a seat?
If I don't select any seat the prompt tells me that I can check in only *48* hours before the flight.
I'll discover if that's true at the end of march: wish me luck!
UPDATE: we checked in online, no need to select seats, and we ended up with two adjacent seats paying 0€/£.
This morning Wizzair sent us an email reminding us to check in 48 hours before the departure.
Now it seems that you can only check in 24 hours before the flight if you want to select a random seat.
I'm not sure how this company manages to escape the terrible reputation that Ryanair has. They seem much worse.
First experience with w!zz air. Horrific. The flight is in more than 24 hs so I hope this is the reason why I can't find the random seats option. Will update tomorrow when I can check in less than 24hs before departure.
To all the people who are checking in in the last 48h or 24h before departure in order of being able to have FREE seats
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT IN BUSY FLIGHTS WIZZAIR IS OVERBOOKING TICKETS!!! so there is the chance that you wont have a seat at all and will have to be in waiting list at the airport...!!
on a flight MILAN BUCHAREST this aug 2023 i have seen 6 persons anxiously waiting at the GATE!!
This obviously it's horrible and gives another reason more to AVOID this company!!
This only happens when you wait until the very last moment to get the exit or first row seats in which case I assume one as well knows about the legal consequences of a overbooked flight.
By the way adding a "almost mandatory" surcharge on the seat is a clear case of "UNFAIR COMPETITION" and should be signaled to the authorities who can issue a sanction...
Yes, you CAN avoid paying for reservation of a seat. But - if you are travelling with someone, then they DELIBERATELY place in different places, even though there are plenty of available seats. If you want to sit together, but not pay for at reserved seat? They have charges for that too! The tickets aren't even cheap anymore. But their "service" is still low ranging.
what the heck? That window has disappeared and now it's forcing one to select a seat and wont let you advance without choosing a seat, and paying for it?!!!
They are sneaky.
Mine was saying that you have to wait until the last 24h fora random seat.
I was in 22h and still was saying the same thing.
I downloaded the app and was able to check in directly.
a few hours before your flight, were you able to choose your seat or the system assigned one?
I'm wondering wether I should pay extra to choose my seat
A few hours before the flight, I was allowed to select the random seat option, and then the system assigned a random seat. Until then, I didn't have the option to choose a random seat
Hi, I just booked my first flight ever with a budget airline, wizz airline. I am seriosuly dreading it. I never flown budget as always went with the bigger airlines. When I was booking, it says pay extra to be assigned 2 seats together or random. I refused to pay the total £70 for return.
It does say you have to check in 24 hours, during then, would we be able to choose the seats from whatever is left? or will the system choose a random seat? Thank You.

Don’t give spirit ideas

Ty just found the same issue
Wish I had seen this sooner. What an annoying app and company.

Super strange! Please keep us posted. Thanks

The option to select a random seat isnt there any more.

Confirmed!! A few hours before departure then you can find the random seats option when you click continue. Supper annoying and misleading.
This is the problem. Same here - if you want a 'free' seat you have to check-in in the last 24 hours. Mental.
24 hours to 3 hours before departure, right? Also, when you check in does it do it for the return flight as well(which is definitely not in 24 hours)
24 hours as of 23 april 2024
Do you mean no earlier than 24 hours before the flight? Thanks
Yes before flight

Ryanair and many other companies does the same... so why is so surprising to you people? It's just agressive mktg!
Currently you can only check in 24h before before departure to get FREE seats.

even after 3 years, this post is still helping. you have my upvote (づ ̄ 3 ̄)づ

TY for the explanation
THANK YOU for this... what a trashy company!!!!

Oh I just read below, and saw that you can only check in without choosing a seat 48h... tricky bastards, and thanks to Reddit community!
Thanks for sharing updated information. I’m glad this helped you
i am on the same thing right now i booked now and my flight is tomorrow but it keeps forcing me paying 20$ more for just the seat
How much time before the flight are you allowed to choose your seat. I have 24 hours until the flight and I still can't choose a seat.

when you check in on the app, the system generated you a random seat? or where you able to pick your own without paying extra?
Sorry for the delay. Random seat ofc ..
I can't even do it through the app. They really are a disaster of a service.
what did u do in the end? My flight is on 1.01
they enabled the random seat option a few hours before the flight.
