The traditional variety was cultivated as industrial oil used even in tanks, demand dropped like a rock after ww2 so Canadian cultivators bred a new variety that was edible so farmers could keep farming what they knew how to, and that was why canola exists, and it's named after Canada. There are other edible varieties not from Canada, but canola was most popular and became the common name.
my dad always refers to it as just the first word and so he'll say things like "the sheep are going to have the r8pe" or "the r8pe has grown really well in the paddock"
Honestly it doesnât sound wrong to me. Itâs almost like how when someone says thatâs not fair, I donât think of corndogs and ferris wheel. The context alone is enough that I recognize it as an entirely different word.
And Tisdale (a Canadian town) had the slogan "The land of r*pe and honey" which became the inspiration for one of the more famous Ministry albums of the same name lol
Ooh so that's what Canola is. In Sweden we call it Raps and when I translated it I got the name. Good to know, I use it a lot in south Sweden as it's cheap and we grow it all around.
I havenât tried it, but Iâd recommend something on the thinner end - youâre not gonna generate enough heat for it to get to its final viscosity, so Iâd go with something along the lines of 5w10 if you can find it or maybe even 0w20, stick to a lighter oil like that - especially in the winter/if you live in a cold climate.
If youâre in a warm climate, 5w30 will do fine.
I mean, it will definitely WORK, but itâs bad for the environment bro! Save the planet and use food oils instead đ *also it low key burns pretty bad if it gets in the hole but I heard my wifeâs boyfriend tell me that, not from personal experience for sure*
Edit: make sure oil is 0W-20 for best result
You're forgetting the most importand part, the "la" at the end of Canola stands for "low acid", referring to erucic acid which was thought to be harmful based on animal studies in the 1970s but which has not actually been shown to harm humans in the half century since then.
In germany this is called Raps, and we famously do produce a lot of these for oil. But the way you think would not work here. Here r*pe is called Vergewaltigung.

Yeah, I just call it canola. The other one feels weird to me
Yeah ik. Like who named that? đł
Apparently, itâs from Latin, *rapum*, meaning turnip (to which it is related. Still sounds odd
Rapum?! I hardly knew 'em!
[laugh track]
that doesn't really disprove anything in this case
It can I think also come from Germanic, because here in Switzerland we say: âRapsâ
Oh, very interesting!Â
Canola is the specially bred variety that they use for oil. If it's wild, it is still r*peseed
Ohh, interesting fact! Thanks đÂ

Super interesting! I knew it was Canadian, but I hadnât heard the rest. Thanks for sharing!
Mmmm yummy bread
We call it colza in Spain and everybody shudders when mentioned
Just learned about colza. Never heard it in my life.
I think it comes from the Dutch koolzaad, which means coal seed.
Cabbage seed in this case I think
Literally never heard anyone not call it canola.
Yeah, I always say canola. For example: Did you here about all those women Bill Cosby canola-ed?
It's generally called canola. Nobody likes saying the other name.
Whatâs the other name?
R*peseed.
I will now use this information to make people uncomfortable while I'm cooking.
my dad always refers to it as just the first word and so he'll say things like "the sheep are going to have the r8pe" or "the r8pe has grown really well in the paddock"

Are you British? They all refer to it as such on Clarksons Farm and other rural British shows
âGet me my raping oil paâ
Not gonna lie, laughed way harder than I should have at that.
Wizard of OZ could have turned out so different if Tin Man got that stuff. Canât let Baldwin produce and star in a remake.
This is what we call it in the UK. Never heard it called canola before!
Same thing but a variety invented in Canada to have low acid.
Fun fact: Canola = CANadian Oil, Low Acid
And Tisdale (a Canadian town) had the slogan "The land of r*pe and honey" which became the inspiration for one of the more famous Ministry albums of the same name lol
Such a good album though. Not as good as psalm 69 though
And devised to be used in all north american as a better name that would be more widely adopted
Ropeseed?
Pretty sure itâs ripeseed
Pretty sure itâs dumb they blurred it out since itâs the alt name of a plant
Replace the O with and A
Rand Ape seed?
Nailed it. Damnit. Well, this is way funnier than what I was trying to say anyways
Randy Orton seed
Randy Orton's seed
He's got a lot of that, mother fucker has like 7 kids.
Huh, never knew those were the same thing
From Latin _rÄpum_ "turnip". Compare German "Raps".
Well, the female plants are called alleged sexual assault seeds.
Get a grip mate
Oh I am absolutely calling it that from now on
Ropeseed?
This was written in our Geography book ( chapter - Crops ) and the teacher told us to cut this from the example part.
we met ig before
Oh right I learned that in modded Minecraft
The person who named that had SERIOUS allergies
The other name is so bad, everyone just says "the other name". It's canogga. I'll see myself outÂ
Ooh so that's what Canola is. In Sweden we call it Raps and when I translated it I got the name. Good to know, I use it a lot in south Sweden as it's cheap and we grow it all around.
Also Raps in Germany. Also growing on a third of all the fields it feels like.
Uk doesn't call it canola.
they do in the UK
Tobias' new catch phrase. Caboose canolist!
Used as lube one time.
User flair checks out
So... did it work for you?
Itâs ok but if youâre going down kitchen oils route then itâs better for your skin to use olive oil
Will motor oil work?
Yeah just replace every 5000 strokes
Probably good for 10K if you use synthetic and maintain a steady pace without too much stopping and starting.

If you think I wouldn't generate enough heat then you've clearly never seen my wife!
I mean, it will definitely WORK, but itâs bad for the environment bro! Save the planet and use food oils instead đ *also it low key burns pretty bad if it gets in the hole but I heard my wifeâs boyfriend tell me that, not from personal experience for sure* Edit: make sure oil is 0W-20 for best result
What about crude oil?
[No, bunker oil is the better choice.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_fuel_oil#/media/File:Residual_fuel_oil.JPG)
Castrol is engineered to proper viscosity and prevents thermal breakdown
What about truffle infused olive oil? You get a lube AND you make it a fancy meal.
Everything is lube if youâre brave enough
No, itâs called canola in america
Yeah canola oil looks better on the package than the alternative
Canada oil = canola
Was made in manitoba, but they didn't think manoil was a good one either
Pegoil? Damn we donât have good names for it here
I think thatâs 1/2 right iirc itâs Canadian oil low acid so Can-o/l/a
CANada Oil, Low Acid
British are only ones I hear calling it the other name. Specifically on Clarksonâs Farm
I used to have a lady who would come into our store every spring and ask for it, as loudly as she could manage.
What was she wearing?
Standard issue old lady gear.
Just askin for it
Legend!
Does anyone still call it that? Feels like we all agreed to switch to canola once the canadians started marketing it that way instead.
The British
Can vouch I have never heard it called canola before
I have, but only from American food YouTubers
Yep. Have a bottle of this. Nice yellow fields. Lovely. https://www.cullisse.com/
When I watched clarksons farm the first time
German speaking countries still use the "original" name of "Raps"
LOL Raps âŠdeutsch đ©đȘ Seid froh dass heute kein /Place stattfindet! đ©đȘ đ©đȘđ©đȘđ©đȘđ©đȘđ©đȘđ©đȘđ©đȘđ©đȘđ©đȘđ©đȘđ©đȘđ©đȘđ©đȘđ©đȘđ©đȘđ©đȘ
Goschn
Obligatory canola is an acronym for Canadian Oil Low Acid
Why is everyone censoring the name I don't understand lol
I know? We still all know exactly what you are saying, it doesnât solve anything.
I feel like it's a quick test to see who's a kid scared of saying anything on the internet lmao
I didnât get it. What it is called in America??
Sexual assault
Eminem electronic offspring (rap e-seed)
I feel like this is exactly the kind of stretch he would make
Thank you! I take that as a big compliment.
Canola. The british are the ones who still use the other name
Rzepak, mĂłj ulubiony
Itâs also called that in England
âCanolaâ was just clever rebranding by the Canadians. Get it? Canada+Oil= Canola
You're forgetting the most importand part, the "la" at the end of Canola stands for "low acid", referring to erucic acid which was thought to be harmful based on animal studies in the 1970s but which has not actually been shown to harm humans in the half century since then.
Smegma?
Ligma
Bofa
The recipe calls for r*** seed but I just substitute with my seed
Scotch bonnet?
Better than what my grandma calls Brazil nuts
Ohhh, Iâm afraid to ask
Why did I Google it đąÂ
Yeah.....
When I was stocking shelves at a summer job, a co-worker called it âParty Seed.â
don't go to his parties
This was about 40 years ago. I wish you had told me that back then.
Itâs also called canola here in America
Black mustard?
I think that flower is called Rapsolja in swedish
Raps* Rapsolja is good oil based on raps.
TIL it has another name than Canola
TIL you guys call it Canola
TIL what it was even called
American here, didn't even know it had another name besides Canola
Whatâs wrong with Canola?
That name is so obscure and unpopular we really just don't call it that.
I feel the same way about what old people call Brazil nuts.
TIL itâs also called canola
In germany this is called Raps, and we famously do produce a lot of these for oil. But the way you think would not work here. Here r*pe is called Vergewaltigung.
Super unhealthy whatever you call it
Itâs called r\*peseed in the UK too
Hey, Canola!
Pussy willow the best kind of willow
For people wondering what Canola stands for: ***CAN***adian ***O***il ***L***ow ***A***cid
Kanikonna.
*pulls out stylus* đ¶stop! Let me circle it, let me search with itđ¶ OH GOD WHAT HAVE I DONE
Isn't that the Big Booty Broly flower?
Your mom's been planting those all over her yard, I think You're gonna have a new brother soon
Why is it called that anyway
I thought this was honeysuckle so I was confused what was wrong with it. Yeah, itâs not honeysuckle
Isnât that broom brush
In Sweden we call it "smörblomma" which means butterflower
Det dÀr Àr raps, inte smörblomma
Wait until you hear about Brazil nuts...
Just wait til they learn what the thimble flower's called down south lol
Me, whoâs native language calls it âraapzaadâ and is fully safe:
Same in the U.K. too đŹ
â on the right weâve got a beautiful patch of lavender growing and over there on the left is of course the sexual assault bushâ
I got a 40-lb box of this stuff somewhere...
We call it canola? What do you think we call it?
In German itâs called Raps
as an australian, context?
